Chapter Fifteen
After the feast Karkaroff started herding his students back to the ship, the entire time dotting on Krum. His favoritism was so overt it made Duo roll his eyes. He watched them cross the room and was surprised when the man froze up after Harry had stepped aside to let them through the doors first. Karkaroff openly stared at the boy and he saw the students also starring and jostling each other.
"Yeah, that's Harry Potter," a voice growled at the crowd. Moody had approached the group while they had been busy staring at Harry.
'Oh, this must be what people normally do when they run into Harry, no wonder the kid was thrown off when he met me,' Duo thought, watching the interaction between Karkaroff and Moody. He tilted his head curiously.
"Wonder what their story is…?" he muttered, watching as Karkaroff stared at Moody with a mix of fear and rage before he turned and swept out of the hall, students in tow. He could just see the way Moody's lip curled in a look of intense dislike.
"Moody and Karkaroff? That's a long story best not shared at the dinner table," Snape replied, throwing a look of disdain at the two men leaving the hall.
Duo was a bit surprised, he hadn't actually expected an answer. "Hmm…" he replied. "You offering to fill me in Sev?"
Snape shrugged, standing as he'd finished his dinner as well. "Dumbledore does want us to assist in your duties and knowing information about our guests would better assist you."
Duo glanced up at the older man. He was getting the impression that Snape really just wanted to talk shit about the two men. He'd noticed Snape wasn't especially fond of Mody but kept very civil about it.
"Sure, let's have a sleepover, we can braid each other's hair," Duo said cheekily, cracking a sly smile.
Snape snorted. "I'm not coming anywhere near your braid Maxwell, " he said as he waited for Duo to get up.
"Later Hee-chan, gotta go gossip. I'll catch you in a bit," Duo waved as he followed Snape out of the hall, making idle conversation as they left.
The next morning saw Duo leaning against a wall in the entrance hall. Dumbledore had moved the Goblet of Fire, placing it in the center of the large hall on a stool. There was a thin gold line draw in a circle around the goblet. It was apparently the Agee Line, Duo had watched the man draw it. Dumbledore had then requested that one of the agents guard the Goblet at all times. It was an odd request but Duo didn't question the man. He was too busy mulling over the information Snape had given him the night before.
Karkaroff was an ex-Death Eater, one of the bad guys. He'd only gotten out of prison by snitching on other Death Eaters. It was a shock that someone with such a history was now a headmaster at a prestigious wizard school but Duo didn't really understand wizard law. He'd been going on the assumption it was similar to muggle law, now he wasn't quite so sure.
He sighed and watched the students idling in the hall. Some had gone in and grabbed breakfast before coming back to oogle the Goblet.
A familiar head of messy black hair caught Duo's attention and he glanced to see the trio heading his way while glancing at the Goblet.
"Anyone put their name in yet?" Ron asked in lieu of a greeting.
"Good morning to you too Ronnie," Duo said, rolling his eyes at the redhead. "The Durmstrang kiddies put their names in this morning and a couple of your peers dropped names in last night."
"'Morning Duo," Harry said, stopign to stand next to Duo and watch the Goblet. "I can see why some did it last night, I wouldn't have wanted everyone watching. What if the goblet just gobbed you right back out again?"
Duo snorted and someone else laughed from behind the group. Duo flicked his eye over to see Fred, George, and Lee Jordan rushing down the stairs excitedly.
"Done it," Fred said in a triumphant whisper to Harry, Ron, and Hermione. He eyed Duo who just raised an eyebrow at him. "Just taken it." At the blank look from Ron they elaborated.
"An Aging Potion, dung brains," Fred said.
"One drop each," George said, rubbing his hands together with glee. "We only need to be a few months older."
"We're going to split the thousand Galleons between the three of us if one of us wins," Lee said, grinning broadly.
"I doubt this is going to work," Hermione said warningly. "Dumbledore will have thought of this."
Hermione glanced at Duo and he just winked at her. "Ummm… guys…" she started, turning back to the older boys. They ignored her.
"Ready?" Fred said to the other two, quivering with excitement. "C'mon then, I'll go first…"
Duo just smiled, Dumbledore had told him to let underaged students try. He was mostly just here to make sure the other schools didn't try anything. He'd already seen a few underaged wizards try so he just smiled and sat back to watch the show.
Fred pulled out a parchment with his name and school and gingerly stepped over the line. When nothing happened George yelled excitedly and jumped over the line as well. Immediately there was a loud sizzling sound and both twins were hurled out of the golden circle landing painfully on the stone floor ten feet away. Then there was a loud pop and both boys were now sporting identical long, white beards.
Everyone in the hall burst into laughter, even the twins joined in after getting up and looking at each other. Duo chuckled and was about to go check on them when he spotted a familiar face.
"I did warn you," a deep, amused voice said. Professor Dumbledore chuckled, stepping out of the Great Hall. He surveyed Fred and George, his eyes twinkling. "I suggest you both go up to Madam Pomfrey. She is already tending to Miss Fawcett, of Ravenclaw, and Mr. Summers, of Hufflepuff, both of whom decided to age themselves up a little too. Though I must say, neither of their beards is anything like as fine as yours."
Fred and George set off with Lee following them, still laughing. Duo tore his eyes away from the sight to see Harry turn to look down at him, raising an amused eyebrow.
"You knew," Harry commented.
"Of course," Duo said with a chuckle. "AB decided the underage kids putting in their own names needed more of a deterrent."
Harry shook his head. "You could have warned them," he said, though he was still smiling amusedly.
"Where's the fun in that? Oh Hee-chan, switch time?," Duo replied, the last aimed at the other agent as he exited the hall.
"Hn, go eat then sleep," Heero replied, settling in. Duo gave him a mock salute and headed into the hall with the trio.
Duo hesitated as they stepped into the hall, it took him a second to realize why the decorations in the Great Hall had been changed. Halloween. Duo distractedly waved to Harry and his friends as he headed to the staff table staring at the cloud of live bats fluttering around the enchanted ceiling. There were hundreds of carved pumpkins scattered about.
"Like me pumpkins Duo?" Hagrid asked with pride as he sat down, still starting around the hall.
"Ah, they're awesome Hagrid," Duo muttered distractedly.
"Never seen Halloween decorations before Maxwell?" Snape commented, raising an eyebrow as he sipped pumpkin juice.
"I mean, yeah. We don't decorate the office and I've never really had time for holidays before. I've seen some in passing," Duo mumbled, pulling his eyes from the decorations to dig into breakfast. Once he was done he was supposed to go to bed but he was planning on taking a walk around the castle. Since they were on constant guard duty for the Goblet the patrols were lacking.
Duo didn't notice the surprised looks he got from the two men sitting with him.
Everyone head cheering from the entrance hall before a tall, black girl came into the hall beaming. Duo heard people congratulating her and realized her name was Angelina. He made a note of that since he sitl didn't know all the students by heart yet.
"You should' come down an' visit me Duo, I got loads more pumpkins uncarved you could' help with,"' Hagrid offered, feeling bad for his young friend.
"Seriously? Awesome!" Duo said happily, quickly finishing his meal so he could go do his rounds before visiting the giant man. Hagrid cuckold as he watched the excited boy rush out the door.
"Hee-chan-" Duo started, wanting to let Heero know what he was planning when he noticed the crowd around the Goblet. Madame Maxime entered behind her students and organized them into a line. One by one the Beauxbatons students stepped across the Age Line and dropped their slips of parchment into the blue-white flames. As each name entered the fire, it turned briefly red and emitted sparks.
"What d'you reckon'll happen to the ones who aren't chosen?" Ron muttered to Harry. "Reckon they'll go back to school, or hang around to watch?" Duo had to smother a chuckle at the dazed looking redhead.
"Dunno," Harry said glancing away and noticing Duo standing near them. "Oh hey Duo."
"S'up Harry, you're losing him," he said, nodding after Ron who was moving toward the front doors muttering to himself.
"Right, gotta' stop him making a fool of himself," Harry sighed and went to follow behind him. Harmione came rushing up to them carrying a rattling box with her.
Duo snorted and turned back to Heero. "So I'ma do a patrol then visit Hagrid for a bit, he said I can carve a pumpkin!" He said excitedly.
"Hn, dont' be out too long, you have night shift," Heero responded, rufling Duo's bangs before the braided boy excitedly rushed out the front doors.
"Hurry up," Ron called as he jumped down the stone steps. Duo blinked up at him before realizing what he was up too and had to stifle his laughter. The redhead's eyes were glued to the Beauxbaton students as they headed across the lawn. Duo shook his head and turned to do his quick round of the grounds.
As he neared Hagrid's cabin he glanced over at the Beauxbatons' carriage. The gigantic powder-blue carriage had been parked two hundred yards from Hagrid's front door. The huge flying horses that had pulled the carriage were now grazing in a makeshift paddock alongside it.
Duo stepped up and knocked on Hagrid's door. He could hear Fang barking from inside. A moment later Hagrid threw the door open and Duo blinked up at him. Hagrid was wearing a hairy brown suit with a checked yellow-and-orange tie. He'd also done something with his har, it was now slicked down into two bunches. The look didn't really suit himl.
"Well aren't you spiffy," Duo commented and heard a snort from inside the cabin. He raised an eyebrow at Hagrid.
"Harry, Ron, and Hermione also came fer a visit, come on in," Hagrid replied, stepping back to let Duo squeeze in.
"Hagrid was filing us in on the skrewts," Hermione said, waving to Duo from the table they were sitting around.
Hagrid's cabin was a single room. In one corner was a gigantic bed covered in a patchwork quilt. A similarly enormous wooden table and chairs stood in front of the fire beneath the quantity of cured hams and dead birds hanging from the ceiling. Duo joined the group already at the table while Hagrid started to make tea.
"Yea', their out by the pumpkin patch," Hagrid said. "They're gettin' massive, mus' be nearly three foot long now. On'y trouble is, they've started killin' each other. S' okay, though, I've got 'em in separate boxes now. Still got abou' twenty."
"Well, that's lucky," Ron said. Hagrid missed the sarcasm but Hermione gave him a look.
"That sucks," Duo commented, lookin out at the pumpkins. He turned back to ask Hagrid about carving one when the other three started up a conversation about the tournament.
"Uh… Actually Hagrid…" Duo tried to get in.
"You wait," Hagrid said, grinning. "You jus' wait. Yer going ter see some stuff yeh've never seen before. Firs' task… ah, but I'm not supposed ter say." Duo bristled, he knew what the task was but they were not supposed to tell anyone, period.
"Hagrid…" Duo said, warning in his voice. He was drowned out however by the excited trio.
"Go on, Hagrid!" Harry, Ron, and Hermione urged him, but he just shook his head, grinning.
"I don' want ter spoil it fer yeh," Hagrid said. "But it's gonna be spectacular, I'll tell yeh that. Them champions're going ter have their work cut out. Never thought I'd live ter see the Triwizard Tournament played again!"
Duo sighed and shook his head. "Hey Hagrid, about the pumpkins…?"
After that Hagrid happily let Duo pick out a pumpkin and then have at it with some carving tools. They were basically knives to Duo since they were sized for Hagrid but he didn't mind and ended up spending a few hours meticulously carving his pumpkin while the trio sat inside and chatted with Hagrid.
Duo wandered back into the hutt about when Hagrid was serving lunch. He offered some to Duo but he politely refused.
"That was fun but I gotta' go get cleaned up and get some sleep. I'm on night shift," he told Hagrid as he wiped some pumpkin gunk off his cheek.
"You look like you climbed inside the pumpkin Duo," Hermione said with a giggle at the braided boy's state.
"I practically did, have you seen how huge the pumpkins are?" Duo said, pointed out the window to where he'd just been. While the trio looked out to see what he'd done he bid them goodbye and headed out to the castle.
"Is that… the grim reaper?" Hermione asked, eyeing the large cut out in the pumpkin. It depicted a cloaked figure with a large scythe.
"Nice, I'll have ter put tha' one up front so people can see it," Hagrid commented.
Hermione eyed the pumpkin a little longer before returning back to the conversation the others were having. She was starting to get the research itch again, something about Duo just seemed so familiar to her…
