Delilah POV
The barns are on fire.
Everything was a blur. As I ran outside, I could see the orange glow coming from the barns. My heart seized at the sight and I took off towards the barns.
Panicked neighs and whinnies came from the barn. I could see Kyle just reaching the first barn—the broodmare barn.
Uncertainty had me looking between the broodmare barn and the training barn—where Dream was. Did I go in and help Kyle? Or go to save Dream?
Hands touched my shoulder and Kathryn nodded towards the other barns. "You go. I'll help Kyle."
At her urging, I took off for the training barn. It was already engulfed in flames to the point where the heat hit me before I even reached it.
I took a deep breath and then after putting my shirt over my nose, rushed in. Horses reared in their stalls and kicked their doors, trying to escape. I went to the first door and flung it open. Emma, the young mare in there rushed out, almost knocking me over on the way out of the barn. I went from stall to stall, opening the doors, running the horses out if I needed to.
I reached Dream's stall, one of the few horses left, and the air became too much. I tried to take a breath but that caused me to start coughing. He pressed against the door, wanting out. "It's okay, boy." I managed to say as I slammed the bolt back, opening his door.
I shooed him away but he stayed at my side. "Dream, go!" I shouted at him as I moved forward. I felt his warmth against me and I knew he wasn't leaving my side—even though the fire threatened him.
I made it to Wolf's stall and he stood in the corner, kicking the wall. "Wolf, hey boy, come on." I went into his stall and he pinned his ears. "Hey now, there's no need for that."
I jumped as boards came crashing down in the stall next to Wolf's. I didn't have time to soothe him—we had to go. I reached out and grabbed for his halter but before I could grab it, he rushed forward, knocking me to the ground. My head bounced against the wall and for a moment, the world spun.
I watched as a double figure of Wolf rushed out of his stall and ran out the exit. My head throbbed and as I pushed myself up, dizziness hit me. No. Not now.
I noticed a figure outside the stall—Dream. "Dream! C'mere boy."
He pranced and I could see his eyes rolling. He didn't want to. "Dream, please, c'mere boy.."
He reached out with his neck and I put my arm around his neck. He backed up and then shied as another board came crashing down by the exit. Shit. Oh Shit.
I glanced at the other door—all the way by the first stall. Flames covered everything. The fire crackled as it took the barn. I looked at Dream and saw the panic in his eyes. He was scared, but he wasn't leaving me.
"We can do this, boy. We can do this." Unsteadily, I pulled myself into a standing position and gripped his mane. I put my foot up against the stall door and forced myself onto Dream's back.
The world was still spinning and I put my arms around his neck, as if I was hugging him. "Go boy!" I kicked him into action and he moved a step forward, then moved back. He didn't want to go through the fire, he knew it was a bad idea, his instincts telling him to avoid it. "We have to go this way, Dream. We have to!"
I nudged him again with my feet but he didn't move. A crack sounded from above and I glanced up. A board the helped hold the roof up had cracked. I saw it sink down and I gasped. It was going to fall on us.
"Go!" I shouted at him as it started to fall. I kicked his sides again and he took off, just as the boards crashed down. I felt the heat intensify as we ran through the flames and Dream screamed. I closed my eyes until I felt the cool air and heard shouts.
I opened them to see a firetruck pull up, men jumping off as it came to a stop. Behind them was a familiar truck—Cody's.
Dream bucked, having had enough and I slid off him, hitting the ground harder than I wanted to. I laid there, unable to move as the firefighters unrolled their fire hose and Cody rushed towards me.
"Delilah!" He slid to his knees beside me. "Are you okay?"
I tried to answer him but all I could do was cough. It felt as if I couldn't get enough air and the sides of my legs burned. "Kyle. Kathryn." I managed to choke out.
He nodded and looked up. "They're coming. They're right here."
Their faces popped up. "Delilah." Kyle's face was in mine. "Just relax, okay? Just relax."
I turned my head and I saw the training barn—the barn I had just escaped—collapse fully, the flames winning.
I laid my head back against the ground and looked up at the sky, closing my eyes, a grateful prayer playing in my head.
….
"Ow." I winced as Dr. Stone put some cream on my burns. My legs had gotten the worst of it—most likely from riding through the flames. He looked up and smiled apologetically.
"Sorry—I know it hurts but the cream will help. And put that mask back on." He added sternly and I did as told, putting my oxygen mask on.
There was a knock at the door and Carlisle walked in, his face worried. "Delilah, I came as soon as they paged me. What happened?"
I looked at Dr. Stone who sighed and nodded then removed my mask. "The barns caught fire at our place. I have some burns from rescuing the horses."
Carlisle sat by my side and took my hand. "Let Dr. Stone finish you up and then you can tell me everything."
After a lot of "ouch!" and wincing, Dr. Stone finished up with me. "I'll give you a prescription for the cream and some pain meds. You need to come see me for follow up in about a week so I can make sure you're healing properly, okay?"
I nodded and he handed his clipboard to Carlisle. "The nurse will be in with some meds in a bit." Dr. Stone left and I took the mask off again.
Carlisle sighed, it sounding like relief as he looked over the clipboard. "You got lucky with your burns. They're superficial second degree burns. They'll hurt for a while but when they heal, you won't have scarring. Your lungs took a bit of a beating but the oxygen has brought your numbers back up. Mild concussion."
I glanced at the door. "Did you see Kathryn and Kyle?"
Carlisle looked down at me and nodded. "Yes, Kyle had some burns like you—second degree, a little worse than yours. Apparently, one of the horses knocked him into a burning piece of wood."
"There was a lot of that going around tonight." I sighed and closed my eyes. "Is Emmett really mad?"
I opened my eyes to see Carlisle shrug. "He's not exactly happy that you wouldn't let him come."
I rolled my eyes. "I didn't tell him he couldn't come."
Carlisle smiled. "He sees it that way."
I wanted to roll my eyes again but refrained from doing so. I had called Carlisle after the nurse had said they paged him and had asked Carlisle to ask Emmett to go the farm. Cody had stayed behind and was going to try to get the horses into the pastures but he'd need help especially with their panicked state.
Plus, I needed to know Dream was okay. I trusted Emmett to take care of Dream and I knew that's what Carlisle meant when Emmett saw it as I wouldn't let him come. He'd know I'd worry about Dream, that I'd care more about Dream than myself.
"He couldn't help me anyways. You're a doctor, he's not." I pointed out. Carlisle started to say something when the nurse came in. She gave me pain meds to take and walked me through my discharge. Carlisle promised to personally make sure that I would follow instructions and it was funny to watch as the nurse flushed as Carlisle smiled at her.
"You and your good looks. Flustering all the nurses." I teased him as we walked down the hall to Kyle's room.
Carlisle looked like he would blush if he could. "I don't do it intentionally."
We got to Kyle's room and I frowned when he told me that they wanted to keep him overnight—as his burns were more severe. "But you go home. Cody's gonna stay tonight to make sure everything is okay."
"Did he say if the horses were all caught?" I asked, leaning against Kathryn, who had put her arm around me.
Kyle sighed. "There's a few still not in the fields. Wolf, Emma, and Lamb. Cody can't find them."
"We'll go in the morning to look for them." I said determinedly. The thought of throwing my leg into a saddle had me internally wincing but they had to be found.
"You will not be going with them, Mister." Kathryn told Kyle sternly and I held back my laugh as Kyle looked pouty.
"Are you staying?" Carlisle asked Kathryn and she nodded.
"I don't want to leave him here alone." Kathryn looked at me. "You'll be okay right?"
I waved off her concern. "Of course. You said Cody will be there. Emmett's there now helping Cody out."
Kyle's face changed. "Does Emmett intend to stay for what's left of the night?"
I hunched my shoulders as all three looked at me. "I don't know. I figure he'll at least wait until I get back and he'll have to do his overprotective boyfriend check."
Kyle's eyes narrowed. "If he stays the night, I want you both in separate bedrooms. In fact, let me just call Cody…" Kathryn stopped his hand from reaching his phone.
"Stop!" She said with a laugh. "Delilah is a trustworthy girl. They'll be fine."
"I'm leaving now." I said, embarrassed. I hugged them both quickly. "Love you guys."
The ride home was quiet and fast. Carlisle got out with me and I saw the remaining clouds of smoke, the firefighters packing up their gear. Cody was talking to an older man, who gestured towards the barns.
I walked over to them and caught the last bit of the conversation. "…there will be another investigator out in the morning, when we have more light. He can confirm if it is in fact arson or electrical."
"Arson?" I stopped in my tracks and they both turned to look at me. Cody's body sagged in relief and he hugged me.
"You okay, Del?" He asked, looking me over.
"I'm fine." I stepped back. "Did you say arson?"
Cody and the other man looked at each other. "Del, this is Captain Rogers of the Midnight Creek Fire Department. Captain, this is Delilah, the ranch owner's daughter."
He nodded at me. "Ma'am, of course we'll need to conduct a thorough and longer investigation before we come to any conclusions, but what are the odds of 2 barns catching on fire at the same time, on the same night?" He shook his head. "While it could be electrical, it's doubtful. It's not confirmed but one of my men found a puddle of gas by one of the pastures."
I was floored. Arson? Who the hell would want to destroy our ranch?
"Del!" Emmett interrupted the conversation and yanked me into his arms. "God, you're okay." Cody and the Captain stepped away with Carlisle and I gripped Emmett back.
"Yeah, I'm okay." I took in his wonderful scent—it was mixed with my other favorite smell, horses. "A little bit of superficial second degree burns, mild concussion. I'll be okay."
Emmett stepped back to look me over before sighing. "I guess you'll want an update on the horses." Emmett held out his hand and together we walked to check on the horses in the pastures. "Dr. Ritter's been here and checked the horses we could catch. She says their lungs sound good and she sees only minor burns on a few of them. She gave me a cream to put on them and said she'd give a call in the morning to set up a time to come back and check them again."
I felt relief flood through me when I saw Dream standing there by the gate. He lifted his head over the gate and I ran—wincing the whole way—towards him. I flung open the gate and threw my arms around him. "Oh Dream. Oh my sweet boy."
He smelled like smoke but I didn't care. I put my cheek against his. "My sweet, brave boy. We made it out together."
Emmett came up beside me and I glanced at him, a bit teary. "He wouldn't leave me—in the barn. He wouldn't leave though his instincts screamed at him too and he got me out when I couldn't walk."
Emmett reached up to run his hand over Dream's neck. "He's a one-in-a-million horse."
"He really is." I wiped the tears away. "He's such a good boy. I love you so much, boy." I kissed his cheek then looked at Emmett. "Dr. Ritter said he's okay?"
Emmett nodded. "They're all okay, even the weanlings. I promise. I went over all of them myself with her."
I nodded and a yawn escaped. "You should come inside and get some sleep." I grabbed his arm as he turned towards the house. "You'll stay?"
Emmett reached out to pull me close to him. "I'm not going anywhere."
It took a while to find Cody, see off the firefighters, Carlisle. Cody bedded down on the couch and even though he threw me a disapproving look, he didn't say anything as Emmett went upstairs with me.
"I should probably shower but I'm too tired." I said, pulling my pants off slowly and putting another pair of pants on, a more loose pair. I crawled into bed with Emmett, cuddling up to his side. "Thanks for being here, Em. You don't know what it means to me to have you here, by my side."
He kissed my head. "I wouldn't be anywhere else, Babe."
"And thanks for seeing to the horses, checking on them when all you wanted to do was come to the hospital." I said quietly, thinking again of how lucky I was.
"Well I knew what would be on your mind. The horses." Emmett gently ran his hand over my hair. "While, yes, I would have loved to be by your side, I can't tell you what it meant to me that you trusted me to help take care of things. I know how much this place and the horses mean to you."
"I love you." I whispered, the emotions of the night taking over. Emmett leaned down and kissed me gently.
"I love you more."
…
Emmett POV
I listened to Delilah breathing as she slept. How had Edward survived this? How had he lived through the years with Bella as a human? Humans were so fragile.
It didn't help that my girlfriend seemed to be a trouble magnet…kind of like Bella. I snorted at the thought.
My phone buzzed and saw it was a text from Jasper. For Alice. She wanted to make sure Delilah was okay, once again. I sighed. Alice couldn't understand why she didn't see anything—she didn't see the fire, she didn't see Delilah go into the fire. We didn't know about the fire until Carlisle had gotten a page and Delilah had called.
This hadn't happened to her since Nessie, since the wolves. Before I had left, I could hear Jasper and Edward telling her that it was probably because it was split second decisions. Bella backed the theory up with her story about when she had made a last second decision to see Jake one time.
I texted back to say that I was with Delilah, she was fine, she was sleeping peacefully.
What did this fire mean? If it was arson, who was the target? Kyle and Kathryn or Delilah? The ranch in general? And who would want to hurt them?
…..
Elliot POV
I sat in the dark, watching the panic, the chaos in the ranch yard as fire blazed, horses screamed, the three small figures ran to save them.
My lips curved in a smile and I thought with happiness that at least one of them had to die right? The fire had taken pretty quickly with the gas and so the fire was very hot, very dangerous.
I hoped it was Delilah. I wanted her to burn. I wanted her to die. I wanted Emmett to be in pain.
Payback for what he had did the night that I had almost solved his problem for him. What was my reward? Nearly being killed.
As a vampire, I could easily snap her neck one night or strangle her but I didn't want Emmett to find out it was me. If he did, he and that coven of his would hunt me to the ends of the Earth to avenge her death.
No, it had to seem unrelated, a simple accident.
I saw one of the barns collapse and my smile widened. It was the one Delilah had went into. Mission accomplished.
I went to move away when I saw something that made me shriek in disbelief. It was her, alive, on the ground. That stupid horse had helped her out. Saved her.
I took off, for the Cullens would be here soon and I wouldn't want to be anywhere near here, not with that wolf they had.
I'd just have to find another way.
…
Delilah POV
I gasped as I tried to slide my jeans onto my legs. The fabric rubbed against my burns and I bit down on my lip to keep from crying out. Emmett would put up a fuss about me riding out if he heard me.
I sighed, letting the jeans drop to my feet. What would I wear if jeans hurt too much?
I looked up at a knock on my door. Nessie peeked in. "Need some help?" She asked, sliding into the room. She glanced down at the jeans laying at my feet. "Too painful?"
I nodded with a frown. "I don't know what I'm going to wear."
Nessie went to my dresser and grabbed something out of it. She held them out to me. It was my softest pair of leggings. "I don't think anyone is going to comment on your attire today." I smiled gratefully at my best friend and she helped me put them on. I winced even at the soft material, but the slight chill of Nessie's hands felt good.
"Thanks." I said before throwing the socks that were sitting on the bed a scared look. Nessie smiled and grabbed them, assisting me with putting them on. "You're the best, Ness."
We went downstairs together—me slowly—and I was surprised to see everyone there, minus Carlisle and Esme.
"What are you all doing here?" I asked in surprise as Emmett put his arm around me.
"We're here to play cowboy." Jake grinned over at me and I laughed at his fake twang.
Cody smiled over his cup of coffee. "The more, the better. It's only three horses but they're spooked and they've been out all night. We might be looking for a while."
Emmett handed me some pills and a cup of water. "Carlisle's—and Kyle's—orders. Kyle wanted me to tell you that he's coming home today and that if it hurts you too much to ride out, stay home. Don't push through."
Cody snorted and I leaned around Emmett to glare at him. He shrugged, looking innocent.
"Well I say the sooner we get out there looking, the better." I sighed. "They're probably not too far off, staying close to home." I tried not to think of the animals out there that could hurt—or kill—them. We had to find them.
"It'll be okay." Jasper said, stepping forward to take my hand in his. I felt calm settle in me. Jasper's power, working through me.
"Thank you." I said quietly and took a deep breath. "Let's go."
A while later, we rode back with two of the three horses. I was worried about Wolf. He was still out there, alone. The other two we had found grazing together not far off from the ranch. They came willingly.
Jasper reined his horse in next to me. "You're worried about the missing horse."
I nodded and sighed, knowing he felt it all. "It's just he's out there all alone, no one to watch his back."
"We'll find him." Jasper glanced over where Cody was talking to Emmett as they rode. "We'll even come back with Jake and see if we can track him ourselves, okay?"
I smiled at Jasper gratefully. "Thanks, Jasper."
I untacked Chip, one of the older horses who hadn't been injured in the fire, before putting him out into a pasture. I was giving Dream some rest, as he had been burned in the fire.
Cody and I looked over Emma and Lamb, seeing no injuries, just little nicks and scratches.
"We need supplies." I blurted out, as I thought about feeding time. "Oh my god, why didn't I think of that? We have nothing to feed them with."
Cody put his hand on my shoulder. "I got us covered." He motioned towards one of the horse trailers. Walking over and opening the door I saw feed buckets, bags of feed, new lead ropes, and hay bales. "I woke up early this morning and saw to it."
I hugged Cody tightly, thinking how great he was. I voiced my thoughts to him. He gave me a squeeze and chuckled. "It's my job to think about this, kid."
Feeding time was certainly interesting and I was glad for the extra hands of Emmett and his siblings. We had to tie the horses to the fences, spaced apart, and put their buckets on the ground.
As they ate, I checked the weather. It would be cold—we'd need to put out extra hay to keep the horses warm—but no snow. I nearly gasped when I saw the date. Shit! Tomorrow was Thanksgiving!
"What?" Cody asked as he peeked over my shoulder. "Ah, yeah, Thanksgiving. Jeez, what a time for all of this to happen."
"I'll be right back!" I told Cody before running up to the house. I didn't bother to take my boots off, instead going straight to the fridge. There it was. A turkey. I could see ingredients sitting on shelves, ready for prep tomorrow.
Kyle was hurt. Kathryn could screw up spaghetti. "Hungry?" I jumped at the voice behind me and turned to see Emmett.
I shook my head. "Tomorrow's Thanksgiving, Emmett. Kyle's going to be too injured to cook and Kathryn, well you know her. With everything going on, I feel like we have to have dinner. I mean this…" I trailed off refusing to say the words. That this could be Kathryn's last. I shook my head. "It's settled. I'm cooking Thanksgiving dinner."
Emmett seemed to read my mind and he smiled understandingly. "I'll help."
"Thanks, Em." I threw my arms around him and he kissed my forehead.
"Anything for you."
…..
Thursday, November 22nd (Thanksgiving day)
"You're doing so great." Kyle said with a smile as he watched me make stuffing. "So glad to know Kathryn's not rubbing off on you."
"Ha-ha!" We both smiled at Kathryn's sarcasm from the other room, where she was setting the table. The front door opened and I grinned as Emmett, Jacob, and Nessie walked in.
"Just in time!" Kyle said towards Emmett and Jake. "The game's about to come on." He glanced back at me. "You got this, Betty Crocker?"
I threw him a glare before putting the stuffing into the oven. Jake followed Kyle into the living room but Emmett came to me first. "You look very hot in that apron." Emmett smiled at me as his arms slid around my waist.
I laughed. "Don't get used to it or anything. I'm just doing it because Kyle just got home from the hospital."
"I know." He pushed back a strand of my falling hair. "How'd the calls go?
Emmett was referring to the calls Cody had made yesterday evening to the insurance company about the barns, the damage.
I shrugged. "Everything was covered so it's looking good, they're just waiting on an official ruling from the investigator. They're sending someone out tomorrow to take pictures of the damage and talk to Kyle and Kathryn about their plans."
"How's your legs feeling?" Nessie came into the conversation as she put on an apron—it must be from their house because it looked like it was out of one of those cooking magazines.
I sighed. "Okay. I managed to get my leggings on myself this morning but I had to take a pretty cold shower."
Nessie gave my arm a squeeze in sympathy and glanced back towards Kathryn. "How's Kathryn feeling?"
I looked over at Kathryn as she walked towards the living room to join Kyle and Jake. "I think she's feeling okay. Too worried about Kyle and I. I told her that I'm fine but she hovered pretty hard yesterday when she got home."
I patted Emmett's chest. "Go catch the game, Ness and I can finish what's left."
He gave me a look so lovingly that my heart did a little squeeze. "You're the best girlfriend ever. Did I ever tell you that?"
I pretended to think. "Hmmm, not enough." I grinned at him and he leaned to kiss me before heading in.
I was really lucky.
…
Alice POV
"Oh!" I gasped as the vision stopped. Bella looked up from reading her book on the couch.
"Alice, what is it?" She asked and Esme poked her head in from the dining room.
"The Volturi." I smiled brightly. "They changed their minds! They're not coming to check on Nessie after all."
"That's great!" Esme gasped and smiled.
"It is. What a great thing—and great timing." I said, referring to it being Thanksgiving.
"You should text Emmett and tell him! He'll be so relieved." Bella nodded towards my phone.
Grabbing my phone, I did just that.
…
Emmett POV
I grabbed my phone out of my pocket as it buzzed. It was Alice. Vision changed. Volturi not coming anymore. We're safe. Delilah is safe.
I sighed in relief as read the text over and over again. The Volturi weren't coming here. Delilah would be safe. They wouldn't know about her. She wouldn't be forced into a choice—she'd be able to make it on her own.
Jake raised his eyebrows at me as I glanced over at him. I motioned towards the phone and he grabbed his. I forwarded Alice's text to him. I watched as the same relief I felt rushed over his face.
We had gotten lucky.
…..
Gabe POV
"Can I get you anymore coffee, honey?" The friendly faced waitress brought me out of my thoughts and I looked up at her.
"That would be great, thanks." I smiled at her and she poured the coffee.
"How come a handsome young man like you is in this diner on Thanksgiving? Don't you have family to be with?"
I shook my head. "No, Ma'am. I'm on my own, though I'm headed to see someone. A friend."
"Where are you from?" She asked, leaning against my table. "That accent in your voice. The south?"
"Texas, Ma'am."
"Well you're a long ways from home here in Montana aren't you?" She murmured and I smiled again.
"Yes, I am but my friend lives here. It's been a few years since we've seen each other and we didn't end on good terms. I'm looking to change that."
Her expression changed to a thoughtful look. "By friend, you mean girlfriend don't you?"
I chuckled and nodded. "Yeah, I do. She's the love of my life. I messed up and now I gotta fix it."
She put her hand on my shoulder. "Well don't let her get away if she's the one. Those are the ones we have to fight for, no matter what."
I watched her walk away and looked down at my coffee mug. I didn't know why I was here in Montana. It had been nearly two years since Delilah and I had saw each other. She must think I was dead. Was this the right thing to do? Show up in her life when she was happy?
I paid my tab and left, getting into my truck. I got on the highway and soon enough, I saw the sign for Midnight Creek.
Taking a deep breath, I got off on the exit. There was no turning back now.
…..
Delilah POV
"…and a toast. To Delilah's first time cooking Thanksgiving dinner, with the help of Nessie, of course." Kyle lifted his wine glass. "It was very good girls. Good job to both of you. I may have to retire my apron."
I rolled my eyes while Kathryn laughed. "She's leaving for college soon enough, Kyle, don't retire your apron just yet unless you want to starve."
My throat tightened at the thought of not being here. Emmett reached over and squeezed my hand, noticing my distress.
Kathryn must have noticed as well. "Not to say you're not welcome home as many times as you'd like but depending on where you go to school, it may not be as often as you'd like."
"Have you thought anymore about where you want to go?" Kyle asked, glancing over at me.
I shrugged. "I want to stay local. University of Montana has a decent Vet program."
"Decent? Really?" Kyle gave me a look. "I want you to do better than decent."
I sighed. "Colorado State has the best program in the country. The other ones in the top five are on the East coast."
"Well I know she applied to Colorado State." Emmett chimed in. Kyle nodded, pleased.
"I know you can get into the program at Colorado State. I have no doubt." Kyle shoved a forkful of food into his mouth.
"And Colorado is less than ten hours away by car, like two hours by plane." Kathryn added. "We could fly you home all the time."
"I haven't even heard back yet." I hunched my shoulders as everyone was focused on me.
"No doubts." Kyle shrugged. Laughing a little, I rolled my eyes. They had made me feel a little better about the distance, even if it was just a little bit.
…..
Alice POV
I was standing up to see what Esme was doing when I was pulled into a vision.
A boy. Well a man really, driving on a snowy road. Only the road was familiar. The sign for Delilah's ranch. He turned into the driveway, seemingly nervous.
He parked next to Delilah's truck and got out. Taking a deep breath, he walked up to the door, hand raised to knock when the door opened. Delilah answered and her face changed. "Oh my god!" She shouted, her eyes going wide and taking a step back. "What are you doing here? How are you here?"
"Alice?" I gasped as I was pulled out of the vision and Esme stood in front of me, a worried look on her face. "What did you see, Alice?"
"There was a man. He was driving to the ranch…Delilah…"
"What, Alice, what about Delilah?" Jasper demanded as his eyes filled with worry.
"Call Emmett or Nessie. Now." I told him and he pulled out his phone.
…
Emmett POV
My phone buzzed in my pocket and I pulled it out. "Jasper, hey what's up?" I asked, stepping back from the sink where I had been doing the dishes with Jake. The girls had cooked so we were on dish duty.
"Where's Delilah?" Jasper asked, sounding tense. I instinctively tensed up and glanced around.
"She's out visiting the horses with Nessie, why?"
"Alice had a vision and…."
….
Delilah POV
"That's all, I'm sorry babies!" I blew a kiss to the weanlings as I ran out of treats. Nessie giggled.
"I don't think they're too happy about that."
I laughed with her. "Yeah, but they all got one so tough." We both turned as a truck made its way up the driveway. "I wonder who that could be."
I watched as it parked beside my truck and the person got out. They were tall, a man, and blondish colored hair. He walked up towards the house and after sharing a look with Nessie, we started towards the house.
The door opened and Emmett stepped out with Jake. They both froze as they saw the man.
Okay, that was weird.
"Can we help you?" Jake asked as Emmett seemed to be frozen.
"I hope so." Something about the person's voice stirred something deep inside me but I couldn't figure out why. "I'm looking for Delilah Roberts."
Nessie and I glanced at each other uncertainly as we moved closer. "Why are you looking for her?" Emmett asked, finally unfreezing.
"I used to know her. We lost touch a few years ago and I'd like to see her again." As I got closer, I saw the face but my brain couldn't make sense of it until he said "My name is Gabe."
"Oh my God." I gasped, feeling as if my knees were going to buckle. He turned fully to face me and there he was. He had changed a bit of course with age, but there were those blue eyes. His body had changed from the scrawny young boy to a young man.
"This can't be happening." I tried to take a deep breath but I couldn't. I shook my head. "This isn't real."
"Delilah." Nessie whispered grabbing onto me. She knew who Gabe was, what he was to me. "Delilah, it's real."
I looked towards the house as I heard the door open. Kyle stepped out. "What's going on—" Kyle broke off as he noticed there was someone else. "What the hell are you doing here?"
I was taken aback by his tone—even more so that it was directed towards Gabe. That he recognized him. That he didn't seem surprised that he was alive.
"Can someone tell me what the hell is going on?" Jake asked, looking at all of us. Me, a pale white mess, Nessie—holding me up and looking distressed, Kyle—angry as hell, and Emmett, still as a statue.
"That's my dead—not so dead—boyfriend." I told Jake blankly.
Welcome to my crazy life.
