The next morning Sean woke up before Emma and headed to work early. He felt like he missed a lot at the shop and wanted to get a head start.
When Emma woke up, she looked around and realized Sean had already left for work. She walked into the bathroom, and there was a note next to the faucet.
"Wanted to get into work early. Love you."
She smiled and got ready for work.
Around lunchtime, Sean was looking through some files on the computer. The guys got a lot of work done while he was out, and he was excited about the new business coming in.
There was a knock at his door.
"Come in."
Emma walked in, "Hi."
"Hey, babe," Sean stood up, "What are you doing here?"
She held up two bags, "I thought we could eat lunch together. Is that okay?"
"Of course, it is. Did you want to go to the park?"
"Sean, it's snowing and about -2 degrees out."
"Oh," He laughed, "I haven't left this room all morning."
"All the more reason for us to have lunch together." Emma walked over to his desk, set down the food, and leaned forward to kiss him.
He kissed her back, "Thank you."
Emma took her chair and brought it around the desk so she could sit right next to Sean while they ate.
"So, what do we have to eat?"
"A couple of protein bowls." She placed his bowl in front of him, "It has marinated kale, quinoa, black beans, lemon un-chicken, avocado, tahini dressing."
"Un-chicken?"
"Fake chicken that tastes amazingly like chicken. I promise it's excellent."
"Well, if you say so," He opened his container, "It smells pretty good."
Emma smiled.
"Sorry I left so early this morning. I just wanted to get here early and make sure everything was okay."
"It's fine."
Sean took a bite of his food and nodded his head.
"Good?"
He nodded again, "Yep."
"Good." She kissed him on his nose.
"I wish I didn't have to go back to work," Emma wrapped her arms around Sean's neck, "But I have a lot to catch up on."
"I thought you were off the rest of the week?"
"I had this presentation I needed to finish, and I wanted to make sure it was finished correctly."
Sean asked, "Is it okay that you came here?"
Emma answered, "Yeah, I may have to stay late tonight, though."
Sean asked, "On a Friday?" Emma nodded, "Do you want me to make dinner for us?"
"Only if you want to."
"I want to," He kissed her and smiled, "You're the only person I want to cook for."
"That's sweet of you. And I look forward to it."
"Do you want me to drive you back to the office? I can if you want me to."
Emma shook her head, "It's fine," She took out her phone, "I can just order an Uber."
"Are you sure?"
"Yep."
"Okay," He watched her order the Uber and smiled.
Emma raised an eyebrow and asked, "Why are you looking at me like that?"
"Can't I look at my beautiful fiancé?"
"I love it when you call me that."
Later that night, Sean was in the middle of cooking when Emma walked in.
"Hey."
"Hey, babe."
"I am exhausted," She dropped her work bag on the floor, took off her shoes, and flopped onto the couch.
"Wow, too tired for a kiss?"
"I'm sorry."
Sean walked over, sat down, and put Emma's feet on his lap. He started massaging one of them, and Emma moaned.
"God, I love your hands so much." Sean laughed. "Seriously, that feels so good."
"Rough afternoon?"
"Yes, I was setting everything up for a series of meetings that are happening on Monday."
"Oh yeah?"
"So, I was running around all afternoon."
"Did you get everything done?"
"Mostly. Still have some more to do. I may have to go in some time this weekend." She stretched, "Or just wake up early on Monday."
Sean switched feet.
"What's for dinner?"
"Pasta with charred broccoli, feta, and lemon."
Emma smiled, "That sounds so good."
"Thank you." He kissed the top of her foot, "I have to tend to it now. It'll be ready in a few minutes, so get undressed and get comfortable."
"Yes, sir."
While Sean finished making dinner, Emma got undressed and washed her face. When she walked out, Sean was putting dinner on the table.
"You're so good to me."
"It's because I love you." He winked and asked, "Would you like some wine with dinner?"
"Sure." She sat down and looked at the spread, "Wow, Sean, this looks good."
"I hope it tastes good."
"I'm sure it does."
Sean poured the wine and sat down. Emma took a bite and made a face. "Uh oh, not good?"
She shook her head and said with her mouth full of food, "No, it's incredible." She covered her mouth and giggled.
Sean smiled.
After Emma finished her first bite, she said, "My God, I wish you had made more so we could have leftovers for a few days."
"Well, I could always make it again." He took a bite and said, "Wow, this is pretty good."
The weekend before the wedding had finally arrived. Sean and Emma opted to have their bachelor/bachelorette night on the Saturday night before the wedding.
Emma was having a sophisticated dinner at a fancy restaurant with the girls, and Sean was just hanging out with the guys at a bar watching basketball.
Jay leaned in and said, "Dude, I can't believe you don't want a stripper."
Sean laughed, "Did you have a stripper at your bachelor party?"
"Well, no, but I wanted one!"
Sean shook his head and took a sip of his beer.
"Man, down that shit! It's your bachelor party."
"I can't." Sean lowered his voice, "Not with the meds I take."
"Oh right, forgot about that."
Meanwhile, at the fancy restaurant, "So Em, I have to ask…" Manny's voice trailed off.
"Yes?"
"Well, you know, you and Sean were intimate in high school, and then after a long layoff, you got back together. So, how much better is the sex now?"
Emma laughed, "He was pretty good for a high school boy, but he's so much better as a grown man."
Liberty chimed in, "You guys must be fucking like rabbits."
Emma nearly spit out her wine. "Liberty!"
"Well?"
Emma couldn't lie, "Yes, we are."
All the ladies laughed.
Emma smiled and said, "I want to thank you all for coming out tonight. I know this isn't exactly a typical bachelorette gathering."
"What's typical anyway?" Jane asked. "If you ask me, I prefer this type of gathering."
Liberty and Toby's wife, Lauren, nodded in agreement.
Emma said, "I wonder what the boys are doing."
Manny said, "My husband is probably begging Sean to call some strippers."
Emma laughed and said, "You're probably right."
Toby, Spinner, and Jay were doing shots at the bar while Sean and Joe were hanging out at a table watching basketball with Liberty's husband, Jordan.
"Thanks for coming out, man."
Joe said, "Of course."
"Sorry, it's not a raging party."
"Eh, that's fine. I'm glad you asked me to come."
Sean smiled then yelled because the Raptors gave up a game-tying three-pointer with only two seconds left.
"Oh, come on! What the fuck?"
Jordan waved his hands at the TV, "They left him wide open!"
Suddenly they heard Toby, Spinner, and Jay yell and start hugging each other.
Sean said, "Oh, boy. They seem to be bonding."
"And not watching the game."
Sean looked at Joe and Jordan, "Maybe I can skip out of here soon."
Joe looked at the guys and back at Sean, "I mean, if you want to, go right ahead."
Sean smiled, "Okay," He got up, quickly shook their hands, and jogged out.
Emma keyed into the apartment and was surprised to see Sean sitting on the couch, "Babe, why are you home so early?"
"Eh, it wasn't my scene, but Toby, Spinner, and Jay were having a blast."
"Oh yeah?" She walked over and sat on his lap.
"They were downing shots of tequila when I left."
Emma said, "Oh no, poor Toby."
Sean laughed and asked, "So how was your night?"
"It was good. We had a great meal, a great talk, and we all bonded."
"Sounds nice."
"It was."
He asked, "Talk about anything interesting?"
"Just girl stuff."
"Oh?"
"Yeah," She got up and walked over to the bedroom door, "Nothing too exciting."
Sean followed her, "You were talking about my sexual prowess, weren't you."
Emma laughed but couldn't lie, "They asked me!"
"I knew my ears were burning for a reason."
"Very funny." She sat down on the bed and took off her shoes, "Anyway, how about you? Was Jay trying to convince you to get a stripper?"
"Yes."
"Figures."
"Knowing Jay, he got one after I left."
Emma smiled. "It's still pretty early."
Sean nodded, "Yes, it is."
"Is it customary for the bride and groom to make love to each other on their bachelor/bachelorette night?"
"Probably not, but who cares."
"This is not how I envisioned our bachelor/bachelorette night ending at all."
Emma asked, "Oh, how did you envision it?"
"I pictured you coming home really drunk and me having to help you get undressed and into bed while you passed out."
"Well, you did help get me undressed and into bed." She kissed his chest.
"True."
"It was a lot more fun this way."
"Yes, it was." He pondered for a moment then asked, "So what exactly did you tell the ladies about my sexual prowess?"
Emma laughed, "Well, if you really must know..."
"Oh, I must."
"I said that you were a wonderful and caring lover back in high school and that you're even better now."
Sean nodded, "That's it?"
"What do you mean that's it? Did you want me to go into detail?"
"Well, I mean, you could have told them that I made you have the best orgasm of your life."
She looked at him and said, "I did."
"Oh…" He smiled, "Good."
Emma asked, "Do you talk about my sexual prowess?"
"Nope."
"What? Why not?"
Sean shrugged, "I don't kiss and tell."
Emma laughed, "What a ridiculous double standard."
"It's not a double standard. I've just never been that guy." He looked at her, "I usually keep that stuff to myself."
"Okay, that's kind of sweet, and now I feel bad that I was so forthcoming with our sexual escapades."
"No, don't. It helps my ego."
"My telling you how incredible you are in bed, isn't enough?"
"Every bit helps, Em."
She laughed and started tickling him.
"Oh, now you've done it."
They started wrestling on the bed and fell onto the floor, laughing. Sean pinned Emma down and held her arms above her head.
"I win."
"You were always good at wrestling," Emma smiled, "This is a pretty hot position we're in right now."
"It certainly is." Sean leaned down, "Do you want me to hold your hands above your head while—"
"While you fuck me? Yes, please."
Sean groaned, "Emma."
"Yes, Sean?"
"You drive me crazy."
She looked down at him, smiled, and then back up at his face, "I know."
Afterward, Sean and Emma were on the floor, side by side, in the spoon position.
"Wow, Em."
"Yeah, that was something."
"I can't believe the things you were saying."
She asked, "Did I freak you out?"
"God, no, that was hot as hell."
"Oh, good."
"It's just that every time I think you can't shock me, you do."
She turned to face him, "I like that we can be like that but also be sweet and tender when it's warranted."
"Me too."
"I love you so much." She stroked his face.
"I love you too," He pulled her closer to his body and kissed her forehead, "I cannot wait to be married to you."
"Just a few more days."
"The longest few days of our lives."
The next morning, Sean woke up to the sound of Emma throwing up.
"Em?" Sean called out to her, "Are you okay?"
"No," Emma wiped her mouth and flushed the toilet.
"I thought you didn't drink that much last night."
"I didn't. I barely finished my glass of wine."
"Maybe you're getting the flu."
"Oh, God, I hope not. I do not want to be sick for the wedding." She rinsed out her mouth and looked in the mirror. "And I'm going to pick up my dress later."
"Oh yeah?"
She walked out of the bathroom, "Yes. I'll be keeping it at my mom's, so you don't accidentally see it."
Sean smiled, and Emma climbed back into bed. He felt her head, "You don't feel hot. Maybe it's a 24-hour bug."
"I've been puking pretty much every morning this week."
He asked, "Why didn't you tell me?"
"I didn't want to bother you. It's probably nothing."
Sean thought about it for a second and said, "Um, Em..."
"Yeah?"
He asked, "Could you be pregnant?"
Emma looked at him and shook her head, "Oh my God. Why didn't I think of that?"
Sean smiled, "Wow, are we going to have a shotgun wedding as your mom and Snake did?"
She laughed, "Shut up."
"Emma, I would be thrilled if you were pregnant. This is a good thing."
"Are you sure? I mean, we haven't had that much time together as a couple, and a baby will change everything."
"I know, but I kind of like the idea of a little Emma running around here." He continued, "God, remember when we thought you were pregnant back in high school?"
"Yes," She laughed, "And when you wanted to leave me and send me money from the base?"
Sean looked at her.
"I'm sorry, that was a dumb thing to say."
"Well, it's true. I was all for shipping off to the Army to leave you alone. I thought it would be a good thing. I thought I was responsible." He held her hand, "I was an idiot."
"Come here." Sean moved over to her side of the bed, "What's important is that you're here now."
"I know." He looked at her, "Do you need me to go out and get you a test?"
"You'd do that?"
"Sure. I need to get my new prescription, so I'm heading to the pharmacy anyway."
"Thank you. Get a couple of tests just so we're sure."
When Sean got back from the pharmacy, Emma was on the couch.
"Are you feeling any better?"
She shook her head, "I should have known I could be pregnant. I did let you, you know, a few times."
"It's funny how you can't say that now but when you're in the throes of passion, you're like a phone sex operator."
She laughed. "Have you had a lot of experience with phone sex operators?"
"Not really. Just goofing around while we were bored on the base."
"Really?"
"I didn't do it a lot."
"Sean, it's not a big deal." She looked at the box and said, "What is a big deal is the baby growing inside me."
"Well, we don't know if you are yet but if you are," Sean took a deep breath and puffed his chest, "it's good to know my boys are strong swimmers."
Emma laughed, "Sean!" She stood up with the test in her hand, "I'm going to do this now so that we can have some peace of mind."
"Okay."
"I'll be right back."
Sean sat on the couch and waited for Emma to come out.
"Okay, now we wait three minutes, and then we'll go in and look." She sat down next to Sean, and he kissed her cheek.
"Nervous?"
"A little bit. If it's positive, our lives are going to change."
"And if it's not, we'll just keep trying."
She asked, "Really?"
"If you want to."
"I mean, I would love to have your baby, obviously, but…"
"But what?"
"It's just all happening so fast."
Sean nodded and said, "Regardless of when it happens, I hope our child gets your height genes."
Emma laughed, "Oh, stop."
"Has it been three minutes?"
"Not yet." She looked at her phone, "One minute, 40 seconds left."
"Okay."
"The longest one minute 40 seconds of my life."
"Maybe if we stand up and start to walk to the bathroom, it won't feel so long." He stood up and helped her up off the couch. "I love you."
"I love you."
They walked into the bathroom and waited for the alarm to go off. When it did, Emma walked over to the counter, looked at the test, and took a deep breath.
"So, what's the verdict?"
Emma looked at him and said, "It looks like you may be finding out my secret baby names soon."
"Are you serious?"
Emma nodded.
Sean walked over to her and hugged her, "Oh my God, Emma. This is amazing." He kissed her and pulled away, smiling.
"I'm so relieved that you're happy about this."
He placed his hand on her belly, "Our child is in there."
"I'm still going to take the second one later and go to the doctor to make sure, but yes, it looks like we're having a baby."
"How soon can we tell people?"
"Well, we should probably wait until the first trimester is over."
"So three or four months in?"
"About that."
He hugged her again. "I'm so excited!" He pulled away, "Now go sit on the couch and relax. Do you need anything?"
"No, I'm fine."
"Are you sure?"
Emma laughed, "Okay, you need to calm down. A minute ago, you didn't know I was pregnant, and you weren't making a fuss over me."
"Sorry, I'm just thrilled about being the father of your child."
"Our child." She kissed him, "Oh my God."
"Is it hitting you now?"
She nodded. "It's a good thing the wedding is this week. At least I won't outgrow the dress."
