Chapter 19

An Evening to Remember

Elizabeth looked at her watch as they got to town.

"It's after 4:00,so Florence probably isn't at the school anymore today,so I can just call her later if that's ok" He nodded his agreement.

Jack opened the door to the jail and dropped Rip off inside,and then they were on their way to Abigail's restaurant.

"Well hello there strangers!" called Abigail over the waved at her and asked if they could get an order to go for today when she offered to get them a table.

"What would you like Elizabeth? Get anything that you want." Jack told her

"Hmmm so many choices,I would like a club sandwich with no mayo, and a big bowl of broccoli cheese soup please. She loved her soup and would have it anyday of the year if it was a kind that she loved. What are you going to have Jack?"

"Well I think that Im going to have the shepherd's 's my favorite! U have your meat,potatoes and your vegetables,it's all in there ha ha." Elizabeth made a mental note about this being his favorite dish.

"Would you two like anything to drink? Abigail asked them.I have iced tea and some fresh strawberry lemonade."

"Ooooo I'll have the lemonade." Jack agreed,plus putting in an order for a piece of her raspberry white chocolate cheesecake. Abigail said to give her about 10 minutes to get their order ready.

"Jack,I'm going to go over there and call Florence. Would you please let me buy dinner tonight? You and Lee paid for everything in Union City." He agreed with a smile. She handed him some money and said that she would be right back. A couple minutes she came back in the dining room,their order was ready, and Jack had gotten it and was waiting for her.

"Ready?" She nodded and he held the door open for was such a gorgeous fall evening. The leaves were so colorful. Elizabeth loved this time of year.

They got to her house, and she told him that she was going to grab a light jacket and she would be right back.A few minutes later,she came back out of the house with her jacket and a blanket.

"I didn't know if you wanted to sit on the grass or the table and chairs that are on the porch. Elizabeth offered,she didn't really mind either felt the same way,so they decided to sit on the porch

"That way you can do all your work for school while we eat." She smiled and thought how he is always thinking of other people before himself.

"My oh my this soup is out of this world! Maybe I can get Abigail to share the recipe with me."Elizabeth remembered that she still needed to go to Yost's Merchantile to get some more things before she could make anything else. She really felt the need that she had to start cooking for herself.

"This shepherd's pie is amazing too." Jack looked like he was in deep thought about something. Elizabeth was thinking that he was thinking about the conversation between him and in the car on the way home. He didn't know that she had overheard the conversation.

"Jack are you okay?"She knew that he thinking about something important,because she had to say his name a few times before he looked up.

"Oh yeah I'm good.I'm just thinking about something."

"Would it happen to be about the conversation that you and Opal's dad had on the way home? I didn't mean to overhear but I did and I'm sorry."Elizabeth apologized,she was very embarrased that she had heard.

"Actually yes,I'm guessing it ok that you know. Just keep it between the two of us please." She nodded. She wasn't sure that she should ask this next question,but she found herself asking anyway.

"You don't have to tell me if you don't want to,but do you have any idea who it might be. The person or persons that are responsible for taking the things from the store."

"Well,of course you know that ass a law officer, I wouldn't be able to discuss it but as your friend,I can tell you that I don't have any idea as of right now. However I will hopefully know more after I do an investigation." She nodded,she should have know this all before she asked.

She went back to putting her final touches on her lesson plan for tomorrow. As she worked,Jack watched her work. This girl was so dedicated to her students and this town. She was so different from the other girls that he had known and been introduced to.

"So... Jack laughed,are you going to help me eat this cheesecake?It is kind of big for just one laughed right back,agreed and grabbed a fork.

A few minutes later,Jack decided to start cleaning told her that he had to get back to the jail and start the files on the robberies that happened at Yost's. Elizabeth thanked Jack for everything and she asked if he would tell Lee hello for her.

"You're so you for going with us. I'll see you tomorrow? he asked her. Jack hopefully hoped that he would see her but he knew that school started tomorrow and she would be busy.

"I'm sure we'll bump into each other sometime." Elizabeth couldn't help but laugh and Jack smiled and laughed as well as he got further away.
