"Drew, we need to leave now!" Jay called up the stairs.

"If we're late, it's fine," Hailey said softly.

"I know," Jay sighed and looked at her, "But I think it'll be better if we get there early to avoid the rush."

"It's a minor league game, not the Cubs, it should be fine," Hailey shrugged.

Jay took a deep breath, "Yeah."

Adam and Kim were spending the day with Cara and asked if Hailey and Jay wanted to take Drew to a Windy City Thunderbolts game. It was one of the last of the season and both couples realized the kids had never been to any baseball game, so this was a good start. Hailey wanted to make Drew's last day with them before they went back to work was special since they wouldn't have as much time for big activities like this for a while again.

Jay checked his watch, "I'm just gonna see what's taking him so long," he started up the stairs, "Drew, what are you doing?" He pushed open his bedroom door, "Drew."

Drew quickly spun around so his back was to Jay.

"What are you doing?" Jay repeated.

"Nothing," Drew said, frozen in his spot.

Jay walked over to him, "Turn around."

"No," Drew shook his head.

Jay crossed his arms, "Drew."

Drew groaned. He dropped his hands and the gauze that Will had wrapped around his arms two days before fell to the carpet.

Jay's eyes widened, "We told you not to take that off."

Drew turned to face him, "I couldn't take it anymore, please don't hurt me."

"Drew," Jay breathed and dropped to his knees in front of him and set his hands on shoulders, "I am never going to hurt you. No matter how disappointed in you I might be, I'm not going to lay a hand on you."

Drew chewed his lip, "Sorry," his hands rubbed over his arms.

Jay shook his head and grabbed his hands, "This is one of those times I'm disappointed." He looked over his arms and gently traced some of the scratches to see how they healed.

Hailey walked in, "Everything okay?"

"I did something bad," Drew said.

Hailey spotted the gauze on the ground and sighed, "Okay. We'll just wrap them again."

"Why?" Drew stomped his foot.

Jay look to his face, "Watch your attitude."

Drew sighed loudly and clenched his fists.

"These still look pretty nasty, bud," Jay said, "They'll be easy to reopen and we don't want them to get dirty."

Hailey nodded, "It's for the best."

"I'm not happy right now," Drew said.

Jay bit his lip, trying not to laugh, "I know." He stood and went to the bathroom and returned with more gauze and cream.

Hailey sat on Drew's bed, "Come sit on my lap."

Drew glared at Jay, but still went over to Hailey.

Jay knelt in front of them, "I'm going to ignore your sassy attitude today, so you might as well drop it."

Hailey raised her eyebrows, "Jay."

Jay shrugged and carefully wrapped Drew's arms, "He's frustrated and that's okay, but being rude is not okay."

Drew blushed and lightly kicked his legs.

Hailey sighed and shook her head, softly rubbing Drew's back.

Jay finished and stood up, "Better?"

Drew mumbled something under his breath and rubbed his face.

"Hmm?" Jay raised his eyebrows.

"I'm sorry," Drew whispered and blushed brighter.

"I know," Jay held his hand out, "Let's go."

Drew took his hand and they walked down the stairs. Hailey laughed as she followed them, of course Jay would fight Drew's sass with his own.

Hailey and Jay each held Drew's hands as they walked through the stadium to their seats.

"There's a lot of people here," Drew said and stepped closer to Jay.

Jay smiled down at him, "Stay by us, okay?"

Hailey nodded and looked at their tickets, "We should be almost there."

Drew looked up at her, "How do you know?"

Hailey showed him the tickets, "See this number and the letter? It's what tells us what section we sit in, what row, and what seat."

"Sounds complicated," Drew said.

Jay laughed and led the way down an aisle, "It's easy to get the hang of."

Adam stood at the end of the row and waved, "Hey!"

"Cara's here!" Drew smiled and let go of Jay and Hailey's hands to through the chairs.

"Why does he do this?" Jay breathed and followed him quickly.

Adam caught Drew around the waist, "Whoa, buddy, hey."

Drew blushed and backed up into Hailey as she slowed down by them.

"Hi Drew," Cara waved from her seat, "Kim bought me cotton candy."

Drew smiled and sat next to her, "Can I try?"

Cara nodded, "It's like eating cotton balls that taste like pink."

Kim laughed softly and gently ran her hand over Cara's ponytail, "Hi guys."

Hailey smiled and sat next to Drew, "Hi, thank you for inviting us."

"It'll be fun," Adam nodded and smiled down at Cara. He looked at Jay, "Want to go buy a beer?"

"Sure," Jay nodded, "Hails, you want one?"

"I'm good," Hailey smiled.

Jay and Adam walked away and Hailey leaned behind Drew to talk to Kim, "Sorry we're a little late."

Kim shrugged, "It hasn't started yet, and even if it did, no big deal. Things are crazy."

"I'll say," Hailey laughed softly and watched Drew and Cara feed each other the cotton candy.

"Are you good with going back to work?" Kim asked softly.

"Uh," Hailey blew out a breath slowly, "I guess. Little nervous."

Kim smiled slightly, "I understand. Especially since…"

Hailey nodded, "Yeah," she lightly rubbed Drew's shoulder.

He looked up at her, "Do you want some?" he held up a chunk of cotton candy.

Hailey smiled, "Sure."

Drew held it to her mouth and laughed as she ate it, "Do you like it?"

"I do," Hailey laughed and nodded, "Thank you."

"This is so good," Drew said and ate more.

Hailey shook her head and laughed harder, "Don't get sick on it."

Drew scrunched his nose, "Remember when I threw up?"

"You threw up?" Cara gasped, "Why?"

Drew showed her his arms, "I did bad things and Doctor Will had to fix me."

Hailey's face fell and she kissed the top of his head, "You weren't bad."

"Oh no," Cara whispered and lightly touched the bandages on Drew's arms, "Did you get punished?"

"Detective Hailey and Detective Jay don't punish me like before," Drew shook his head.

"Uh," Kim cleared her throat, "What do you two mean?"

"Drew used to get hurt," Cara said and looked up at Kim, "It was not good."

Kim glanced to Hailey who bit her lip and looked away, keeping a hand on Drew's shoulder.

"But now I don't get hurt," Drew explained, "Don't worry. Cara, I've only gotten in big trouble one time and you know what I had to do?"

Cara shook her head fast and her eyes were wide.

"Just sit at a table!" Drew smiled, "That's it! It wasn't scary like before."

Cara sighed, "Good."

Kim's mouth gaped as she watched the two of them talk.

Adam and Jay walked back up the steps, "We brought snacks!" Adam said.

Hailey swallowed and reached out to grab the hot dogs from Jay, "Thank you."

"You good?" Jay asked while sitting down.

Hailey took a deep breath, "Yeah, we…yeah."

"Can I have one?" Drew sat up.

"Of course," Hailey said softly while passing him a hot dog.

Drew and Cara happily ate while Hailey and Kim still tried to recover from the conversation they'd overheard.

The game started as Adam sat and quietly said, "You look like you saw a ghost," to Kim.

"We'll talk later," Kim breathed.

"Okay," Adam mumbled and sat back to start eating.

As the game went on, Drew couldn't look away. Cara, on the other hand, became restless and was talking Kim's ear off.

"Do you think he's having fun?" Jay whispered to Hailey.

Hailey laughed softly and glanced at Drew, "I really can't tell, but he's clearly interested in it."

Jay smiled and wrapped his arm around her, "This was a good idea."

"I agree," Hailey leaned against him and watched the game.

The seventh inning started and Drew's head whipped around as everyone stood up at once, "What's happening?"

"Seventh inning stretch," Jay said as he stood, "Stand up, it's fun."

Drew stood with them, "But why now?"

"Because the game's getting close to finishing," Hailey explained, "Are you having fun?"

"This is a good sport," Drew nodded, "It doesn't seem too dangerous."

"Maybe we can sign you up next year," Jay said.

"No, I don't think that's a good idea," Drew shook his head.

Hailey laughed softly, "We'll see when it comes around. Maybe you'll change your mind."

Drew shrugged.

Jay chuckled and reached around Hailey to squeeze Drew's arm, "Got it."

Cara stood and tugged on Drew's shirt, "Adam and Kim are going to bring me to a mascot, want to come?"

"Definitely not," Drew shook his head, "That's not a good idea to talk to strangers."

Cara shrugged and walked toward Adam.

"You sure?" Adam asked, "I don't mind taking you."

"I cannot talk to any strangers," Drew shook his head.

"Okay," Kim said before they left.

Drew sat back down as the game started again, "Cara was getting on my nerves."

Hailey laughed and sat as well, "Why?"

"She talks so much," Drew sighed, "I just want to focus."

"Okay then," Jay chuckled and drank his beer as he sat.

The game ended and Cara clapped, "Fireworks!"

Drew looked at her, "What are you talking about?"

"There's supposed to be fireworks tonight," Kim smiled, "Isn't that cool?"

"Oh no," Drew covered his ears.

Hailey's eyes widened, "What?"

"Oh no, oh no," Drew repeated and pulled his legs up on the chair.

"It didn't start yet," Cara rolled her eyes.

"Cara," Kim breathed.

Drew put his head in his knees.

"Maybe we should go," Jay said and stood up, "Drew, come on, we'll drive home."

Hailey nodded and looked at Kim and Adam, "We're sorry."

"Don't be," Adam shook his head, "It's okay, we'll see you all soon."

Jay gently picked up Drew and started walking down the stairs. Hailey quickly followed them to the parking lot. With the truck in sight, there was a loud boom overhead and the fireworks started.

Drew groaned and gripped Jay's shirt.

Jay winced, "I've got you."

Hailey opened the truck door for him and helped pry Drew off of Jay, "You're safe," she said softly and climbed in next to him.

Drew shook his head and covered his ears again.

Jay hopped in the front seat and fought the traffic to get out of the parking lot. The fireworks continued in the sky and he gripped the steering wheel, "You don't like loud noises, Drew?"

"No, no," Drew mumbled.

Hailey nodded and rubbed his back, "It's all right. You're safe here."

"I'm sorry," Jay said, "I wish I could drive faster."

"What if we could fly out of here?" Hailey asked with a smile.

Drew gasped, "And go next to the fireworks?"

"Oh, no," Hailey shook her head quickly, "No, I'm sorry, I didn't mean that."

Drew curled up as much as he could in the seat, his hands pressed tightly over his ears.

The fireworks came to a close as the finale crackled loudly above them. Jay winced and glanced back at Hailey and Drew through the rearview mirror.

Hailey smiled slightly in understanding and reached forward to squeeze his shoulder, "It's okay," she whispered.

Jay nodded and took a deep breath, "We'll get there soon."

Soon enough, Jay parked the car in their driveway and jumped out to carry Drew into the house. Hailey chewed her lip and followed them, locking the house up as Jay sat on the couch with Drew in his lap. She went to the kitchen to start making hot chocolate.

Drew had calmed down during the car ride, but he still seemed nervous and had started playing with the bandages on his arms again.

"I think now's a good time we talked about something," Jay said softly and faced Drew to him.

"Are you mad?" Drew whispered.

"Not at all," Jay shook his head, "Um," he cleared his throat, "I…I sometimes feel like you do too."

Hailey watched from the kitchen and smiled, leaning against the counter.

"Is your brain different too?" Drew asked softly.

Jay lightly played with the pillow next to him, "I guess you could say that."

Drew waited and rubbed his eyes.

"You know what soldiers are, right?" Jay asked.

Drew nodded.

"Well, I was one," Jay continued, "I was in this group called the Rangers and um…I saw some really scary things and was a part of bad things too."

"Like blood and guns?" Drew interrupted.

Jay slightly nodded, "Like blood and guns. Sometimes, though, when people leave that job, those people get…" he searched for the word and glanced back at Hailey.

She nodded at him and smiled.

Jay smiled back and looked to Drew again, "A lot of people get this thing called PTSD," he said quietly, "And that means that certain things make them remember those bad memories and they have a hard time controlling it and understanding what's going on."

"Like when my brain tries to explode because its overwhelmed?" Drew guessed.

"Just like that," Jay nodded. He took a deep breath, "I get like that."

Drew bit his lip, "Do you get scared too?"

"Sometimes," Jay nodded, "I used to get nightmares a lot. I still get them, but they're not as scary because I have Hailey and we've learned how to figure them out."

Hailey walked over with two mugs, "We learned that hot chocolate helps."

Jay smiled and took the mugs from her, he passed one to Drew, "Do you know why?"

"Because it's yummy?" Drew laughed.

Jay chuckled, "Yes, but also because it tastes like home."

Drew nodded, "True. What else happens to you?"

"Um," Jay rubbed his face, "Loud noises like today sort of scare me and every once in a while, certain cases at work are hard."

Drew bit his lip, "You don't scratch though."

"No, I don't," Jay said, "But I have made bad decisions before because of being scared."

Before Drew could ask what those bad decisions were, Hailey jumped in, "Jay's learned how to react in positive ways, though."

Jay nodded, "Like the hot chocolate or going for a run. Hailey bought me one of those heavy blankets too and that helps."

Drew played with his fingers, "Should I do that stuff instead of scratch?"

"You should do what works for you," Jay said softly.

Drew nodded and looked down at his hot chocolate, "How do you get this PTSD thing?"

"If something really horrible happens to you," Jay tried to explain, "It's not something you can control."

"Do you think I have it?" Drew asked, his eyes watering.

Hailey sat next to him and rubbed his back, "We think that maybe when you lived with those bad people, that caused you to keep those bad memories like Jay."

"Like when you ran away in the grocery store," Jay continued.

Drew rubbed his face and nodded, trying to talk.

Hailey gently hugged him from behind, "We want to help you. You've been through so much, but you still deserve to be happy."

Drew sniffled, "Thank you."

Jay looked at Hailey and smiled at her, knowing that now was the perfect time to say what they've all been thinking the past few days.

"We love you, bud," Jay said softly.

Drew's eyes widened, "You said it."

Hailey laughed quietly and nodded, "He did and it's true. We love you so much."

Drew smiled and quickly put his hot chocolate on the coffee table before hugging Jay tightly, "I love you too." He pulled away and hugged Hailey, "And I love you."

Jay chuckled and rubbed Drew's back, "We're so happy."

Hailey smiled at him over Drew's shoulder and winked, holding Drew close.

A/N: I struggled a bit with this one, but I hope you still liked it! If any of you have any suggestions for any future chapters, please let me know – whether it's fluff or drama or whatever, I'm open. I'm pretty sure next chapter will be based off of a part of a prompt from floopdeedoopdee and I'm excited.

Also! PS: That last one-shot I had said I was writing that was taking me a while is finally up and I'd super appreciate if you checked it out if you haven't already! It's basically set about two years before the start of this story and goes over Jay and Hailey's 13 day engagement that I mentioned in Chapter 2 here. Anyways, thank you for everything as always!
