I'll Keep Your Memory Vague
This won't break your heart
But I just think it could
Cause I haven't tried as hard as I should
To separate you from everything I do
But I would never want to come between us two
Draco looked at his mother, who sat across the small dining table from him. She had a sad smile on her face, and he couldn't help but reflect that she'd never looked so peaceful, nor so heartbroken. Lucius was serving a life sentence in Azkaban; Harry Potter refused to testify on his behalf, which was understandable, considering all the wrongs the man had committed. The Savior did, however, testify for both Narcissa and Draco Malfoy, mitigating a lot of the damage the blond had committed in his efforts to keep his family safe.
His own memories of the raven were bittersweet; after the trials, Harry had approached the reigning Malfoy Lord for reconciliation, and a chance to start fresh. The blond eagerly took it, glad for the opportunity to prove to Harry that his faith hadn't been misplaced. It was only a matter of time before they became inseparable, much to the chagrin of Harry's Gryffindor friends.
They had bonded New Year's day 1999, in a ceremony both solemn and celebratory, and everyone who wanted to attend was invited. The Weasleys came en masse, offering their congratulations, or, in Ron's case, threats, to the happy couple. Harry immediately moved into the Manor, filling it with laughter and love as he helped Draco and Narcissa soothe the scars left from Voldemort's near constant presence those few dark years before he was defeated. Those memories were what kept the blond going as he went from his father's businesses to the Ministry, helping the wizarding world recover from the nightmare from which they'd awakened.
At first, they weren't willing to allow a Malfoy into the Ministry, in any capacity. It took the intervention of their most beloved citizen to get the wheels turning. Though Draco was grateful for the help, he resented it as well, hoping to be able to succeed on his own merits. His mother sat him down and spoke to him, letting him know that he would never be able to prove himself, if he couldn't even get through the door. Nodding his acceptance of that wisdom, he more graciously accepted Harry's help, and things only improved from there.
Children had been discussed more than once, but with Draco's busy schedule, there often wasn't time for them to spend together to make it happen. Harry had approached some of his female friends, in the hopes that they would be willing to be surrogates for him, but that idea quickly soured when it was discovered that they would do it for the prestige of carrying the Chosen One's baby.
Draco shook his head, trying to clear it of the painful memories of Harry and how he had filled up all the empty, quiet spaces in his heart, and in his home. If he listened closely, he could hear the raven's laughter, his tears and his joy booming from every corner of the Manor. He'd tried, every day, to put Harry behind him. The loss was too great to bear; the memories so painful that there were days when Draco couldn't even get out of bed.
Now I'm thinking back
To what I said before
I hope your heart won't have to hurt anymore
Cause it's really not that sad from here
Because the moments I can feel you near
They keep you close to me my dear
And if they ever become too clear…
"I hope you're happy, Harry," Draco whispered as he sat on the balcony of his suite of rooms. He stared up at the night sky, wondering which star was Harry as the tears slowly tracked down his face. The loss of his love had crushed him at first; he'd holed up in his rooms and lay in bed, inconsolable. Harry had been out with Luna Lovegood, buying her maternity outfits, and things for their nursery. Of all of Harry's female friends, only Luna was willing to carry their children without expectation. She wouldn't even accept monetary compensation for the use of her uterus, so Harry had decided to spoil her with clothes and personal items.
Unfortunately, on this day, one of the girls who had been turned down as a potential surrogate bumped into them as they were leaving Twilfit and Tattings. At first, things seemed normal; Cho Chang had expressed her congratulations to Harry and Draco. However, things soon took a dark turn when Chang pulled her wand and pointed it at Luna's gently swelling belly. She incanted a curse to cause the blonde to miscarry, but Harry jumped in front of it first. The result was the expelling of his entrails through his backside. He collapsed to the ground as he quickly bled out.
Not satisfied with the murder of Harry Potter, Cho aimed her wand at Luna again and caused her to lose the baby. As the blonde lay on the ground beside Harry, bleeding profusely as the fetus slid from her body, Chang sauntered away as if she just didn't kill three people in cold blood, satisfied with the results. She was set upon by the crowd as they cried out at the loss of their hero.
No one came to the aid of either person who lay dying upon the pavement, and it was many minutes later, as the Aurors apparated in, before anyone realized that Harry was still lying on the cobblestones, bleeding. Battle Healers rushed to the sides of the man and woman, but it was hopeless. They hadn't received any sort of assistance in time, and had died in the dirt.
Draco thought back to the last conversation Harry and he'd had before that fateful shopping trip. "Are you sure you want to go out there?" Draco had asked, frightened. "You've been receiving a lot of owls, threatening you and Luna. It's not safe for either one of you right now."
"I can take care of myself," Harry had insisted with a smile. "If the Dark Lord couldn't kill me, no one can." With that, Harry had flooed to the Leaky Cauldron, leaving an increasingly terrified mate behind. Draco had even sent a patronus message to the young man, begging him to return, but it was not to be.
Draco shook his head again, smiling sadly at the direction of his thoughts. I miss you so much, Harry. Mum misses you, too. I imagine what it would have been like to have you here, with our child in your arms. She would have been beautiful, too, with my blond hair and your emerald eyes. I try not to let it hurt so much, but it's hard sometimes to put all of those memories away. I always feel you looking over my shoulder, and that helps keep the sadness away. I love you, Harry. I'll never stop loving you.
Now you've gone away
Don't worry it's ok
That you're gone away
Further than yesterday
But you'll never leave these scenes
My mind replays
Over time, the memories grew fuzzy with distance. Harry faded further and further back in Draco's mind, and the only time the memories were sharp and clear was in Malfoy's dreams.
I'll keep your memory vague
So you won't feel bad about me
I'll say the things that you said
Sometimes so it reminds me
