To say Foaly was shocked when Artemis, Holly and Cecily appeared in front of him would have been a large understatement. He was positively gobsmacked.
"What?... How?... What? That's not possible."
"Apparently you still have a lot to learn" Artemis said, clasping a hand on the Centaur's shoulder.
"You need a relay to be able to teleport somewhere. You shouldn't be able to get in here."
Artemis smirked, then frowned, then smirked again.
"Relay based teleportation is obsolete my friend. I didn't realise you were still living in the dark ages."
"I preferred it when you were on the surface" Foaly mumbled, then more clearly. "It's good to see you again Artemis."
"Likewise" Artemis replied, sitting down. "I wish I could say this is a social visit, but I don't do social visits."
"You don't do social, full stop" Holly said, offhandedly.
"I saw what happened" Foaly said, lowering his voice. "Of course, you know that, I always have eyes on your place. I'm sorry Artemis."
"Whilst I am sad to have lost Fowl Manor... Amongst other things, it only shows I was right to send The Obelisk down here. Wyatt Munroe will not stop until he finds it."
"Wyatt Munroe" Foaly repeated, before shaking himself in an exaggerated fashion. "That name still gives me chills. Are you sure he's the one after the artefact?"
"Logically yes, he's the only candidate."
"I reluctantly agree" Foaly replied, before glancing back to his central monitor, which showed the wreckage of Fowl Manor, still ablaze. It made everyone else look at the monitor too.
"I'm amazed you got out of this one Artemis, I really am" Foaly said, shaking his head.
"There's one very special elf I have to thank for that" Artemis said, pointing at Holly. "She played her part to perfection."
"I was following your instructions" Holly replied, having to look up at Artemis whilst she spoke even though he was sat down. "You never cease to amaze me with your ability to mastermind an escape from the tightest of situations. I've missed that massive brain of yours."
"Sweet" Foaly said sarcastically. Cecily had to stifle a laugh, then shrunk back behind Holly when she realised Foaly had noticed her.
"Anyway, that's enough of the reintroductions" Artemis said, getting back up and walking over to Foaly. "I hear you're closing in on whoever is leading the conspiracy down here, which is good, but whilst we can't crack the code used to close down the LEP's systems, we're vulnerable to another attack at any moment. Maybe not even an attack, maybe they'll just wipe our servers. Regardless, now they know we're onto them, time is running out."
"You have an idea, don't you?"
"I know Wyatt Munroe, I know how he works. I also know how he writes code, so if he wrote this himself, I can unravel it."

Artemis sat down in front of one of Foaly's vast array of computer systems, and began to watch as the stream of code ran past him. He began typing, watching it come up on a second screen, interacting with the original base code. Artemis' expression changed quickly from interest to confusion to determination. He began typing faster, before stopping, erasing it all and starting again. As soon as the code finished streaming past him, he shook his head and smiled. Foaly, Cecily and Holly all looked suitably confused.
"I should have known something like this would have happened. It makes sense now."
"You cracked the code?" Foaly asked excitedly.
"I didn't need to crack the code, I recognised it the moment it came up on the screen. I wrote it."
"You wrote the code that took down the LEP?" Holly asked, trying her best not to jump to conclusions.
"Yes, I wrote it. But I didn't write it for me, I wrote it for a specific client."
"So it was the client that hacked into the LEP?" Holly asked, starting to put together the pieces. "So, whoever this client is, they're a part of this."
"That's the interesting part. The client I wrote this code for was the LEP itself. Technically I wrote it for the Guns & Gangs, and Counter Terrorism units, though it could have been used in other divisions. The theory was that the code could be used before a raid on a suspected terror cell or gang hideout, where it would shut down all forms of communication and lock their servers. That meant they couldn't call for help or delete anything incriminating before or during the raid. I never anticipated the LEP would use it on itself, but that was before we knew just how many rogue elements exist within the force. One of them must have used it."
"Markin Rose" Cecily said, quietly but clearly, once Artemis stopped talking. "There's an 86% chance the member of the LEP that used the code during the siege is Commander Markin Rose. As leader of the Guns & Gangs unit he would have had full access to the code, and is high enough up the chain of command to satisfy Chriton Salt's criteria. In addition, he could potentially fit in with the letters we found inside Ferran Goy's secret room."
"The handwriting recognition software still has another 15 minutes left to run" Foaly said, walking over to check on it. "Once that's finished, it could give us reasonable proof to arrest him."
"Arrest him?" Holly near scoffed. "What good is arresting him going to do? One of his corrupt buddies will likely just get him out of jail before we could even go to a trial."
"Or there's a 42% chance there would be an attempt to assassinate him in order to stop him from talking" Cecily offered.
"One step at a time!" Artemis said loudly, silencing everyone else. "One step at a time."

The next 15 minutes were agony. Time had never passed so slowly.
"Can this thing not hurry up?" Holly asked, pacing up and down the Ops booth.
"No" Foaly said firmly. "Handwriting is not machinery, it varies from letter to letter, but there are specific tells in the way somebody writes that can give them away. Patterns even they might not notice, but it takes time to analyse everything."
"Can we not just go in and talk to Commander Rose anyway?"
"No" Both Foaly and Artemis said simultaneously.
"We are not confronting Markin Rose with anything until we have some form of proof" Artemis said. "All we have at the moment is a theory, and that isn't enough. Rose could hide himself behind a wall of bureaucracy and we wouldn't be able to touch him again. We have to be patient, as much as we can be."
And so they waited. Cecily went out to make everyone – bar Artemis, who stuck to water – coffee using Artemis' hidden coffee machine, which managed to pass some of the time, but the waiting was still painful. They all just wanted it to be over.

DING!

The sound that finally snapped them out of their trace of impatience. It was ready.
"Finally!" Holly exclaimed.
"Foaly" Artemis said. "Would you like to do the honours?"
Foaly walked over to the machine, and read out the result.
"This is it! The letters have a 92% match to the records of Commander Markin Rose, Guns & Gangs. He wrote those letters, he's our man."
"Then we don't have a moment to waste" Artemis said, putting down his mug. "Let's end this conspiracy once and for all! But first, we need to make a call. Oh, and Foaly, I need your computer..."
