Jason studied the building in front of him. It was a two story building that had no balcony to it. The bottom half was a church, but the upper half was an apartment where he assumed that the priest of the church lived. Jason didn't see a car outside, so he assumed, and hoped, that the priest was out of town.
The last half hour had been spent scouting the building. Jason was across the street laying on another roof. At the entrance of the church, a man was sitting a table. He wore a robe, but he had taken off the hood that covered his head. The man had a box underneath the table. Jason watched regularly dressed people walk up to the man, say something to him, and produce a flyer. The man then handed them robes.
It seemed like seven people had entered the building. No one had came by in the last five minutes, and Jason hoped that no other cult members would show up. They had already killed too many, and he didn't know how he could stomach killing seven more. Even if they divided up the seven cultist left and the man outside the building, two of the centurions would kill three cultists, and the other would only kill two.
Well, that wouldn't be a problem if they went with Reyna's plan. Jason did not want to go with that plan though. When Reyna first walked them through it, Jason had instantly shut it down and denied any involvement. Gwen remained silent and finally said that they should scout the building out and get supplies.
Jason volunteered to scout the building, while the other two got supplies. He hoped that Gwen would talk Reyna out of her crazy idea. Jason heard a car park in the alley next to him, and he tensed. He slowly moved towards the edge of the building and looked down.
Gwen stepped out of the car and looked up at Jason. He nodded to her and quickly climbed down the ladder in the alley. He examined Gwen quietly. There was bruises on her face and arms, and Jason was sure that she had plenty of bruises on her back and stomach. Gwen looked exhausted and tired.
Reyna stepped out of the van and glanced at Jason. She handed him a new jacket. Jason quickly took off his tattered and torn one and put on the new one. The snow was falling worse than before, and he was freezing. Reyna handed him a cup.
"How are you two feeling?" Jason asked. He took a sip of the drink and almost moaned in delight. The hot chocolate was the most delicious thing he ever had. Gwen smiled and put a hat on his head.
"I'll be fine after this is all over," Reyna muttered. She opened the trunk of the car. Jason moved towards the trunk and stared. It had about ten different gasoline containers in it. Reyna lifted one and winced in pain. Bandages were peeking out of her jacket sleeves, and one of her hands was wrapped up tightly, since she had punched it through a window.
"There's only eight cultists, including the man outside," Jason began. He looked at Gwen. "Are we really doing this?"
"It is the best way," Gwen answered. She grabbed two of the gasoline containers. "We just have to find Ceres."
"There is a million things wrong with this plan," Jason said. "First, that is someone's house above the church. Second, you want to burn a church! That's terrible. We can't just burn down someone's house and a church!"
"It's just a building," Reyna muttered.
Jason bit his tongue. He wanted to call Reyna a terrible person, but they really could not afford to argue anymore. Gwen grabbed both of their shoulders. She spoke, "Both of you calm down. Please. I don't need you two arguing, or flirting."
"We're not," Jason said. He could feel how badly he was blushing. Reyna was blushing even worse than him. "I just don't agree with what we're doing."
"We either kill the cultists by our own hand, or we lock down the building and set it on fire," Reyna said. She grabbed a pipe from the trunk. "So, what is your choice?"
"This is literally the worst thing I have ever done," Jason said. Reyna glanced at Gwen and seemed to give her a look. "Is there no other way?"
"No," Gwen said softly. She looked at Jason. "We're out of time. This is the easiest way to assure that we destroy the cult without getting hurt any further. We're all running on fumes as this point, and Reyna's lost almost as much blood as I did. You're still dealing with your concussion, and you got shot at. I'm a walking bruise at this point."
"I don't want to be part of this," Jason muttered. He looked down and crossed his arms.
"Neither do I," Gwen admitted. Jason glanced up at her. "I hate that we have to do this Jason, but how many more people are they going to hurt if we don't stop them? Let's just get this over with."
"Fine," Jason muttered. He looked down again. "They all stop by the doorman and talk to him while showing him the flyer. Then they receive a robe and head inside. All the robes have hoods, and it looks like most of them are putting their hoods on. We just have to get past the doorman."
Gwen nodded and glanced out of the alley. She studied the building. Reyna leaned on the car and studied Jason. She placed her hands into her pockets.
"The police are going to have fun with this one," Reyna muttered. Jason slowly looked at her. "Ever been arrested before?"
"No," Jason answered. He sighed and leaned against the alley wall. "I don't really leave Camp Jupiter, so I haven't had the chance to be arrested. Have you?"
"Never arrested," Reyna answered. She shivered and stared down at the ground. Jason was cold as well, but his disgust at his current situation was distracting him. "Stole some things though."
"What things?" Jason asked. Reyna didn't answer for a few moments. She finally closed her eyes.
"Some food. A pocketknife. There was also this kid back in Puerto Rico. His family was pretty abusive and wouldn't give him anything that he needed. I stole some clothes for him," Reyna said. She opened her eyes, but it looked like she was lost in a distant memory.
"That's pretty sweet of you, if not morally terrible," Jason said. Reyna smiled slightly.
"I would have bought them legitimately, but it wasn't possible," Reyna muttered. She looked at Jason. "Despite all of this craziness, I bet you're enjoying the time away from Camp Jupiter."
"I guess I am. I really haven't thought about it," Jason said. He smiled slightly. Then, he looked back at Gwen and lost his smile. "We should focus on the job."
"Yeah," Reyna said after a moment. She scowled and pushed herself off of the car. Gwen turned and gave Jason a look. Jason looked at her in confusion. "Do you have a plan, Gwen?"
"The doorman is about my height, and I can use the robe to cover the weight difference," Gwen said. "I'll go inside and try to find Ceres. Reyna, I want you to douse the building in gasoline. Jason, search the upper floor."
"Break into the priest's house?" Jason asked. His eyes widened. Gwen looked at him confused. "It's a church! A priest lives up there."
"Jason, do you think someone lives there? It use to be a church, Jason It's an abandoned building now," Gwen said. Jason frowned. "We googled it on a computer before we got here. There is nothing in the building, other than what the cult put in there. I'm guessing a cult member lives on the second floor, or that is where they store everything."
"Everything including a goddess," Reyna muttered. She stuck her hands back into her jacket. "How are we going to get to the upper floor?"
"Jason is going to boost the two of you onto the roof," Gwen explained. Reyna stared at Gwen and then slowly looked at Jason. It was impossible for Jason to keep the grin from his face. He didn't like to brag about his powers, but they were pretty cool.
"Boost us onto the roof," Reyna repeated. "How?"
"I'm going to use the wind to propel our jump," Jason answered. "Then, I'll climb into the second story window and see what I can find."
"Sounds great," Reyna muttered. She looked at Jason. "Just don't drop me, okay?"
"I'll do my best," Jason said. Reyna turned towards the trunk and carefully started to gather the supplies. Jason felt a hand on his arm, and Gwen led him away from the car.
"What are you doing?" Gwen asked quietly. Jason looked at her confused. "Reyna was trying to talk to you and have a real conversation with you. It looked like you were going to start to get close to her, but then, you said that the two of you should focus on the mission."
"I just thought we should focus," Jason began. Gwen gave him a look. "I don't like her!"
"You are the worst liar," Gwen stated. Jason tried to stop his blush, and he quickly looked away. Gwen sighed. "We have a ride back to Camp Jupiter after this. Try to talk to her during that, okay?"
"Okay," Jason said. He looked back at Reyna. "We should get ready to move."
"Agreed," Gwen said. She nudged Jason. "After this, I am going to get the two of you together. One way or another. So don't drop your girlfriend when you make your way to the roof."
Jason's blush was enough to heat his face. A wicked laugh escaped Gwen. After a moment, Reyna looked back at them. Jason quickly looked away and tried not to think about his crush. For now, he had to focus on wiping this cult out for good.
