Nobody Listens Chapter 16: "Brotherly Pains"

So, I know Donald hasn't made a debut in this story yet, but he will. I just haven't figured out how to squeeze him in here haha.

Dewey woke up that morning feeling something pressed against him. He turned around to see that Louie was sleeping nest to him.

He smiled. It made him feel a lot better knowing that he wasn't alone.

It had been one day since Dewey had been grounded, and he was taking it pretty hard. With his inner demons hurting him, he just couldn't keep his thoughts straight.

"L-Louie? A-are you awake?"

His brother stirred, "Yes." Louie opened his eyes.

Both of the boys sat up. A minute of silence passes.

"Hey Dewey?" Louie finally said.

"Yeah?"

"I'm sorry."

"For what?"

"For…you know….everything…..I didn't mean to get you in trouble."

"It's okay." Dewey told him, but his thought contradicted the statement he had just said.

It was not okay.

Somehow, Louie could understand, "No, it's not." He sighed.

"What do you mean?"

"I shouldn't have said that to you. It's not true, Dewey."

"Yes it is."

Dewey forced himself to smile but it turned out wobbly and unnatural.

Louie didn't buy it for one second, "What's really been bothering you?"

"Nothing." He didn't want to make Louie any sadder with his hurt.

He was already hurting enough.

Huey climbed down from the top bunk, "Hey." He said. He had his red button-up pjs on.

Louie grunted in response.

Huey rested his hand on Dewey's shoulder, "You can tell us what's bothering you Dewey. We're all ears."

Dewey looked down, "I don't think I'm ready for that just yet. But thanks. I'll tell you. In time."

Huey looked at the ground, "I didn't win the Junior Woodchuck showoff. It hurt."

Louie stared at his brothers, "We're hurt."

Huey wrapped his arms around both of them, "But we'll always have each other…right, Dewey?"

Dewey forced another smile, this time making sure to make it more realistic.

Huey and Louie might have each other.

But Dewey was slowly slipping away…
