It was the day of exams as Brooklyn lounged outside by the lake, waiting for his friends to finish and practicing his levitation spell.
But then he heard the water ripple and something emerged from the lake. His eyes widened when he saw that it was the Giant Squid that lived in it.
It didn't look like it wanted to attack, but was watching Brooklyn with curious eyes. Brooklyn gave the Squid a little wave, as it moved one of its tentacles close, but not threatening.
"Hey, just enjoying the day," Brooklyn said in a gentle voice, taking the tentacle and shaking it in greeting. The Squid gave a gentle crooning noise as it waved its tentacle and went back under.
Was I really talking to a Giant Squid? Brooklyn thought, shaking his head to himself as he sat back down. Ever since he lost his Stone Sleep, Brooklyn had become fascinated by the daytime, and sometimes took the liberty during Harry's classes to walk outside and breathe in the afternoon or morning air. Enjoy this while it lasts, he thought to himself one time, for one day he will return to his family and be able to turn to Stone again.
Brooklyn heard the bell ring as students began to file out of their exams. He stood up and began to search for Harry, Ron, and Hermione. He eventually found them not to far from where he was and greeted them.
"How did exams go?" He asked. "Well, hopefully we passed," Harry said nervously. Hermione looked happier than the rest of them, though.
"I found them to be rather enjoyable!" She exclaimed. Ron rolled his eyes. "Speak for yourself." Brooklyn laughed a bit, then saw that Harry yelped in pain and clasped his hand onto his Scar. "You okay?" He asked in concern. Harry shook his head.
"It's been like this all day, it's driving me crazy."
"Perhaps you should see Madam Ponfrey?" Ron suggested. Harry shook his head again.
"I think it might be a warning," he said. Brooklyn folded his arms. "Well, whoever wants to mess with you will have to get through me, first!" He proclaimed in a brave voice. Harry smiled in appreciation.
As they walked along the field near Hagrid's hut, Harry had a sudden thought that stopped everybody in their tracks. "What?" Ron questioned. Harry then turned and went to Hagrid's. "Don't you think it is a bit odd that what Hagrid wanted more than a dragon, and a stranger just turns up and just happens to have one?"
Brooklyn stared. "You're really not suggesting-" but Harry continued on as they reached the Hut.
Hagrid looked up, a bit startled by their arrival.
"Hagrid, who gave you that dragon egg? What did he look like?" Harry demanded. Hagrid seemed confused, but answered.
"Dunno, never saw his face. He kept his hood up."
"But he must have asked you questions," Brooklyn persisted. Hagrid continued.
"He wanted to know what sort of creatures I looked after, and I told him that after Fluffy, a dragon would be no problem! It got hazy after a while, though. Kept buyin' me drinks."
Brooklyn shook his head. In his mind, getting drunk was no idea of fun for him.
"But did he seem interested in Fluffy?" Harry asked. Hagrid nodded. "Well, of course he was interested! How many times have you come across a three headed dog? But I said that the trick with any beast is to know how to calm them. With Fluffy, jus' play a bit o' music and he falls straight to sleep!"
Brooklyn and his friends all looked horrified at this new info. Hagrid then suddenly looked shocked. "I shouldn' have told yeh that!"
The four of them immediately began to ran back up to the castle, ignoring Hagrid's calls to them until they reached McGonagall's classroom.
"Please, we need to see Dumbledore," Brooklyn panted. Her eyes widened in surprise at his words but then narrowed again.
"I'm afraid that he's not here. He received an urgent owl from the Ministry of Magic and left immediately for London."
Brooklyn felt horror grip him. With Dumbledore gone, it was more than likely that Voldemort could get his hands on the Stone tonight!
"He's gone? But this is important!" Harry yelled. "It's about the Sorcerer's Stone!" Now McGonagall looked even more surprised than before. "How did you-"
"We think somebody is going to try and steal the Stone!" Brooklyn exclaimed in desperation. She shook her head.
"I have no idea how you four found out about the Stone, but I assure you it is quite well protected. Now go back out and enjoy this nice day."
They all left crestfallen minus Brooklyn who felt a bit angry at her for not helping them. Snape surely couldn't be behind this, could he?
He was snapped out of his thoughts when Harry spoke.
"There can be no doubt about it now, it was Snape, which means he is going to try and get past Fluffy."
Hermione looked scared. "And with Dumbledore gone-"
Brooklyn held up his hands. "Guys, lets not jump to any conc-"
"Good afternoon."
The gargoyle felt nervousness full him. How much did he hear? Snape was standing behind Ron, who looked scared. Snape gave a weird smile that didn't look normal.
"Now what would three young Gryffindors and their gargoyle friend be doing inside on a day like this?" He asked in an almost amused tone. Brooklyn folded his arms.
"Nothing, sir," he answered in a bold voice. Snape raised his brow at Brooklyn. "You ought to be careful. People would think you were, up to something."
And with that, with a sweep of his cloak, Snape strode away in his typical fashion.
The four friends looked at each other in worry, though Harry looked determined.
"I know what you're thinking, Harry, and it's a bad idea," Brooklyn commented. "You already got in trouble earlier!" But Harry wouldn't hear any of it.
"It's the only way to stop Him, Brooklyn. If he gets the Stone, we're all lost! That's why we're going down the trap door tonight!"
Brooklyn groaned as they made their way back to the common room. "I have a bad feeling about this!" He muttered sarcastically.
