REWRITE: STAR WARS - EPISODE VII - THE DARK RESURGENCE

The present fanfic is a rewrite of the first film in the sequel trilogy. This is essentially the result of a writing exercise to rethink and fix a story that has several inconsistencies and is lacking in character development. Some characters and locations are preserved, others are abandoned. Key scenes in the film tend to be preserved as well.

18. Chapter 17

The scene of the riots is now seen through a hologram in the grand chamber of the Republic senate in Hosnian Prime. It is a lighter space than the Senate chamber in the Coruscant as it has a glass dome as a ceiling and hovering speaker pods with the representatives of the Republic. A great skyline with modern elegant buildings is seen beyond the glass dome.

"It is with great regret that as a speaker for New Alderaan I now come to you to request action against a new, hostile and extremely well armed Imperial Faction. The people of Vekhaar are not alone. Riots and civil unrest have become rampant in the western expansion region in little more than a few standard days," speaks Leia on her floating pod. "I submit to discussion the declaration of a galactic state of emergency… the full mobilisation of the Republic fleet, and the senate's support for the intervention of the Jedi Order."

There is a clamor in the senate. Senators of all species are divided between strong support and opposition. Tarsunt Chancellor Lanever Villecham halts the clamor and speaks.

"The events in the expansion region do indeed merit discussion but the measures proposed by senator Organa are reminiscent of the last steps before the fall of the Old Republic. There will be a discussion, and as with all matters related to defense… there must be an extended majority."

There is an applause in the senate. We see Leia's expression of slight disappointment.
