So I was trying to figure out the entire plot structure while writing this chapter so that might be why it took so long. I will be gone for 2 days so this one is extra, extra, long, a lot of stuff happens in this one.
Reviewer note: If you want to post what your theories are then definitely do that. There is a lot of stuff happening so this chapter might be confusing, and I will gladly help anyone figure out whats going on. (as long as it doesn't give away stuff)
Anyways theories as to what is happening in the Clans and with Nightstorm are super appreciated! :3
Nightstorm was astonished by this. Yellowstar really couldn't tell me that? "That's weird, isn't it?"
Nightstorm turned his head to see Mintbreeze still by his side. "In a way… I thought I could figure out who it was, but now it seems so wrong…" he murmured.
Mintbreeze seemed confused. "What do you mean wrong?"
"I wanted to find out why they did it, and…" Nightstorm trailed off.
"What's so wrong with that? Oaktail did... something... to Lonelymist," meowed Mintbreeze, "and every cat here seems alright with it. What if the same thing happens to you?"
Nightstorm wasn't sure about this. "Do you really think my own Clan would do something like that?"
Mintbreeze shrugged. "They clearly hated Lonelymist, so if he's your father, Stonepelt and the rest of the Clan might be even more suspicious of you."
Nightstorm knew this might be true. "So if you think FireClan is going to kill me if I start acting like Lonelymist," he suggested darkly.
"I really don't think you should go that far," said Mintbreeze turning her head to Stonepelt, who was still at the vigil, "but I do think maybe certain cats here might be more wary of you than others…"
Nightstorm met her line of sight, realizing who she was referring too. "I don't think he would ever do something like that…" he responded.
"You never know," stated Mintbreeze, "If his father injured Lonelymist, then he might have similar motives."
Nightstorm caught a glimpse of Stonepelt's eyes. They were clouded with grief as he stood over his dead father. Nightstorm felt a pang of sadness for the young warrior, for he knew what losing a loved one was like. Except… Snowkit was different…
Nightstorm could feel anger rising up within him. He turned back to Mintbreeze. "This isn't right!" he hissed, "We need to do something, I can't be alone again! What if he gets killed next?"
Mintbreeze took a step back, her gaze shocked. "What do you mean alone? I've always been there for you, remember Snowk-" she got cut off by Nightstorm.
"Shut up about Snowkit!" the black tom snapped, "She died, you can't seem to accept that. You hardly act like you're friends with me, you're just trying to get me to stop being friends with Stonepelt!"
"Every cat here, especially Stonepelt, knows you did something they think was horrible Nightstorm," she retorted, fury in her eyes, "This isn't even the first time! Stonepelt clearly thinks you're part of this group and I'm trying to protect you!"
Nightstorm tried to get to his point. "No one else is doing anything else about this weird group of cats that keeps killing every cat, so maybe we should actually do something useful."
"Maybe instead of throwing your life away you should just try to survive this," remarked Mintbreeze.
Nightstorm snorted and walked away. He had a plan, knowing he might be able to do something. He padded into the medicine den, where Addertail was cleaning the blood splattered on the floor. "Addertail, I'm heading out to do something, make sure you tell the warriors I'm not able to leave your den or something," meowed Nightstorm.
"Is this about Lonelymist?" asked Addertail, stopping his cleaning.
Nightstorm wasn't sure why Addertail knew about him and Lonelymist. "I overheard you and your friend discussing it," explained Addertail, "You should stay away from Lonelymist, something with him… is not right…"
Nightstorm now started to like Mintbreeze more for actually supporting him finding out about Lonelymist. "Why doesn't any cat just tell me who he is?" questioned Nightstorm.
"Some things are best left forgotten, Nightstorm." murmured Addertail.
"Fine," hissed Nightstorm.
Addertail and the rest of FireClan clearly know something about Lonelymist. He stalked out of the den and climbed out of camp the same way he and Sandfur had moons ago. This time he easily scaled the camp wall and jumped over the top with ease. He trekked through the forest and uncovered a weird twoleg cat disguise and a pelt filled with catmint that was hidden under a bush.
He managed to fit it on himself by stepping into the holes for his legs and stretching out. It wasn't a good fit but it still worked. He stepped through the woods until he stumbled upon a cave entrance. The hole in the ground wasn't blocked off like it usually was, so he ran into the cold stone tunnel.
It was a small and cramped space but he kept himself from panicking. Nightstorm continued through the tunnels until he came into the open space that he had discovered on his 'stick retrieving' task. The entire cave was dimly lit, but Nightstorm could still see a little bit. He knew some cat had been down here the night he found that rabbit, he just hadn't thought it was important at the time. Maybe the cats are meeting down here…
The clearing was empty, except for a scent of an unknown cat, so he hopped across the stream and continued through a tunnel on the other side. The occasional rat ran across the stone ahead of him. The area seemed to get darker as he went along, and the rock colder. The tunnel got tighter and tighter until he could barely squeeze through and suddenly fell down a few fox-lengths.
He hadn't been prepared for the fall but wasn't hurt at all from it. He found himself in a small space, another tunnel in front of him and another opening a fox-length above the ground. The scent went in the high entrance so he easily jumped up, finding the passageway extremely tight. He was more prepared this time for the drop ahead of him.
He slipped on the stone at the edge and plunged into ice cold water. He swam for the nearest shore which wasn't far away, as he saw another exit near it. But as he scented the air he realized the scent he had been following seemingly disappeared from here. Right now Nightstorm had no idea where he was. He remembered the stories used to frighten kits, of cats who strayed too far down into the caves and slowly died of starvation in the endless darkness, forever alone.
Nightstorm had an idea. He jumped back into the water, which still chilled him to his pelt. He dived as far down as he could, but couldn't hit a surface to stop him. He swam more and more down but felt his need for air grow too strong and swam back up, breathing heavily when he reached the surface. The cave must go deeper…
The black warrior didn't hesitate to not go down into the underwater cave and climbed back onto the shore, but he saw something standing in the tunnel. It was a cat, barely visible in the darkness. The cat's pelt was plastered in mud, so Nightstorm had no idea what color they were. Even the cat's eyes were impossible to see with how much mud was on him. Nightstorm unsheathed his claws, ready to fight whoever this was. But instead the odd cat opened his jaw to speak. "Don't go down there, nothing ever comes back up."
Nightstorm took a step back. He hadn't expected the cat to speak. "How do I know you're real?" questioned Nightstorm.
"I'm not exactly, well, real," stated the mud furred cat, "I'm from StarClan, I have been giving you visions. The ones with your sister Snowkit, that was me."
Nightstorm heavily suspected this wasn't a StarClan cat. "What does she being in my visions have to do with anything? It has nothing to do with the other visions. And how do you know who I am?"
"Your eyes. Orange is a rare color, but do not worry about that. Every cat here already knows what you did, but back to the visions. Snowkit might have more to do with it then you think," explained the mysterious cat, "You need to open up your mind. Now, come with me, we have something important you can't miss."
Nightstorm instantly jumped back into the water and began swimming down. Something wasn't right with the mud cat, and from the stories the elders told, that wasn't a StarClan cat. He swam deeper and deeper, his breath holding up steadily. The rock curved at a point and he found himself swimming more curved, and then upwards. He saw a beam of light at the surface of the tunnel, and he swam up frantically. I can survive this.
But when he reached the surface he was blocked by something solid and frozen. It was ice, a thin layer that covered the pool he was under. He began clawing and swatting it with his paws. It seemed like there was no hope, and he constantly tried to break the ice. At the last minute the ice broke open and he got pulled out of the water.
Nightstorm gasped and collapsed onto the ice, shaking from the cold. His vision was blurry and when he turned his head up a white she-cat was visible. She had green eyes and a few black spots on her, and clearly looked to be young. "What in the name of StarClan were you doing down there?" she scolded, "Going deep into the caves is forbidden! And what is that thing you're wearing?"
"Some cats are down there…" gasped Nightstorm, his voice shaky from the intense cold, "I think they may be the same ones that are causing all the murders."
The white cat had confusion in her eyes. "What murders?"
Nightstorm was bewildered. "Everything that's been going on around the Clans! Laketail went missing, Newtflank killed herself," he got cut off by the cat.
"Newtflank didn't kill herself, she went to be a kittypet."
Nightstorm knew what Clan she was from now. IceClan… The leaders must be keeping their failure to catch the mysterious murderers a secret from as many of their Clanmates as possible. That might be why they never mentioned the murders at the gathering…
"I honestly don't care what happened to Newtflank," Nightstorm started, regretting a little what he said, "I just know that there are some suspicious cats clearly disguising themselves in the tunnel. I found some mangled rabbits in the caves, I think they might be bloodthirsty rogues," he thought back to how the mud cat recognized him, "and ones that know about the Clans. They're dangerous."
The white she-cat didn't seem convinced. "You might be a spy for all I know, why else would you wear that thing?"
She bristled her fur and stepped towards him. He unsheathed his claws and instantly ran towards the exit tunnel. I can't convince an IceClan cat. The IceClan cat yowled and ran after him, not quite as fast as Nightstorm. He continued running until he saw the light shining from the exit.
Out of nowhere more Clan cats gathered at the entrance ready for him to jump out so they could catch him. He turned around and saw the other IceClan cat in fast pursuit. He sighed regretfully and jumped when she was coming up the slope, knocking her over and going back down the tunnel.
Arriving at the pool with ice covering its surface, he saw another entrance out of the cave but was tackled by the IceClan cat. Being pinned to the ground he hissed at her. "Your as mousebrained as they say FireClan cats are," she sneered, "You could run, but you keep on fighting."
Nightstorm was exhausted from so much swimming and running, but used all his strength to lunge himself upwards. The she-cat was taken by surprise and knocked back to the ground, both cats now waiting for the other to make the first move. "I didn't know I was in IceClan territory," Nightstorm hissed, "I need to get back to FireClan!"
"I will take you to my camp dead if I have to!" she said, fury in her voice.
Nightstorm realized he might be able to talk himself out of a fight with a good reason. "I can't have gotten any information off of you, I've been in the caves this entire time!"
The IceClan warrior stopped. "That almost sounded reasonable," she spoke, "but spies shouldn't be let free."
She seemed to freeze for a moment. "Wait, your Nightstorm, aren't you?"
Nightstorm slowly nodded. I really hate having orange eyes. "You're a freak, Nightstorm. I know what happened," she snapped at him, "I know you don't care about loyalty, so leave. You're at the bottom of the mountains, just head into the forest."
Nightstorm hesitated. There were cats at the entrance of the tunnel. He slowly headed into the tunnel with the white cat following him. "Also, I'm Whiteheart..." she murmured.
Nightstorm nodded back to her. This time the cats at the entrance were gone, so he jumped out into the clearing. In front of him was a huge mountain and when he turned around he saw the forest. He nodded again in thanks to Whiteheart letting him go. "Don't tell any cat about this," she hissed, "I can't let enemies of our territory so easily."
Nightstorm left and trotted back into the thick woods. Before he completely disappeared into them, he turned his head back to see Whiteheart vanishing into the mountains.
I realized I never said her name so ye I just put it in there randomly. Will she come back? IDK
