Chapter 17

Surprises

A tornado of sand surrounded Mesprit and Nigel, Nigel stood firm, trying to predict what the lake guardian would do next.

Suddenly sand in the shapes of the Pokémon Serviper began to pop out of the ground, trying to bite him. Instead of sand their fangs were made out of psychic energy.

Nigel dodged every single one of them, slashing them in half with leaf blade only for them to reform instantly. Mesprit was trying to tire him out. Nigel shook his head, refusing to fall for it and ran towards Mesprit, still hovering in a smaller vortex. However just as he was about to hit her, Mesprit teleported to the side, Nigel landed on the soft sand and instantly began to skin.

As the sand came up to his neck, Nigel gasped and said "no, no!" He knew that Mesprit was about to kill him!

"This cave will be your tomb, once you suffocate I'll retrieve the time gears from your corpse!" Mesprit said with a hint of pride in her voice. He had stolen 3 time gears and put Uxie in a coma, as far as she was concerned this was a merciful death.

"I can't, not now, I have to win for….." Nigel was cut off as he was sucked under the sand, leaving nothing but a dreadful silence in the cave.

"That's it.." Mesprit sighed as she allowed the sandstorm and the Servipers to dissipate. She made sure to keep the quicksand going for a bit longer to be sure.

Her triumph was short-lived however as a green light began to glow from within the sand, with an explosion of green energy Nigel emerged from the sand, but he looked very different. Nigel was three feet taller with a long neck and two crests on his head. He had semicircular, yellow eyes with red rims. His lower jaw and a belt-like band across its waist are also red. Along his back, he had two lines running down the middle and two rows of yellow seeds. His tail was shaped similar to that of a palm tree's branch. Both of his long arms had two sharp, elongated leaves and three claws. The blades were twice as long as they were before.

"You evolved!" Mesprit stammered.

"Yea, it's been a long time coming" Nigel admitted before slashing Mesprit with a leaf blade, while she was stunned he grabbed one of the seeds from his back and threw it at the ground, thick vines grew up from the ground and instantly restrained Mesprit in place.

"Stay put" Nigel ordered as Mesprit struggled with all her might, but her physical body was too weak and her psychic powers were drained from creating that sandstorm, Nigel turned his attention to his treasure bag, he had some aqua seeds left, as he was searching for one there was a shattering sound behind him. Before he could even try to toss another ice seed, a small jolt of electricity zapped his arm, doing little damage but managing to knock his bag away, the satchel landed with a heavy metallic clunk from the time gears within.

"I don't want to fight anyone else!" Nigel pleaded.

"You sealed your fate by stealing the time gears!" Tesla scoffed before his hand moved to a bracelet on his arm, Lana pulled her headband forward, both of them revealing a gemstone on their wrist and head respectively.

"We'll show you just how strong we are!" Tesla stayed firmly as both of them activated the gemstones. There was a flash before a ball if energy formed around them, the sphere shattered like glass, revealing Tesla and Lana, who looked slightly different now.

Tesla's toes were now black and white wool had grown on the back of his head and over his tail. His long wooly tail now had many small, red orbs attached to it. His conical ears retained their stripes, but were now segmented with swirled tips.

Lana now had a second set of jaws protruding from the back of her head, and both sets now had a spiky tuft of hair. The ear-like extensions on my head were longer and had tips with two points. The fur on her legs were now magenta, and she had longer fur on its arms with magenta markings around her wrists.

"See how you feel with mega evolutions!" Tesla yelled as he fired a dragon pulse as Nigel, sending him flying through the air, landing hard on his back in the sand. As he got up he saw Lana rushing him, turning around and walking backwards with both sets of jaws snapping at him.

Nigel narrowly dodged the attacks, still unused to his new body's height and weight. Luckily he had fought Mawiles before and learned a rather useful technique.

"Funny thing is that your kind had a pressure point that mega evolution probably makes worse" Nigel said before sidestepping at the perfect moment, he then gave a swift chop to the top of Lana's head to stun her before using his other hand to strike right where the jaws connected to the head.

Lana felt a paralyzing pain throughout her body before passing out almost instantly, her mega evolution dissipating in a flash of pink light.

"NO!" Tesla yelled before firing another dragon pulse, Nigel was ready this time however and dodged, rushing forward and slashing Tesla with multiple leaf blades. Despite his evolution's new power, they had no effect.

"You don't know much about mega evolution! I'm a dragon type now jerk!" Tesla said before blasting him point blank with another dragon pulse. Tesla continued to blast his opponent again and again as Nigel laid in the sand, trying to get up only to be blasted again.

"Yea! Take this!" Tesla yelled as he shot a lighting bolt upwards forming a ball of electricity above Nigel, his mega evolution increasing his aggression.

However Nigel had landed next to his treasure bag and using the last of his strength to reach for something in his treasure bag, his body starting to glow just as the lightning bolt hit.

The thunder attack hit, causing a smokescreen to form around the crater.

"That's that!" Tesla exclaimed. However the dashing wanderer had just made a fatal mistake, one that would cost him the victory. He had celebrated too early, and dropped his guard.

The smoke cleared, revealing Nigel now in his own mega form, electricity crackling over his body but not damaging him. His head crests had become more pointed and red markings were surrounding his eyes. The yellow seeds down his back had grown larger and the last pair of seeds had turned red, while the pair above them had turned orange. Red stripes encircled the base of his tail and ran across his lower belly. The leaves on its wrists become more pointed, and the upper ones have red tips and half-circles cut out of the middles, giving them a more wicked and sharp look.. Covering his chest and shoulders were plates of leaves similar to those that formed his tail. Nigel's tail was much longer and had developed a red stinger at the tip.

Nigel rushed forward at an obscene speed, Tesla shot a thunderbolt but Nigel took the electricity like it was nothing, it fact it made him even faster as his arm blades glowed blue and green. The dual colored blades of energy were almost longer than his arms.

Tesla was hopeless to dodge as Nigel slashed him over and over in the chest and neck. With a feral yell he slashed Tesla in the face before delivering a punch to his gut so powerful it sent him flying back 10 feet and creating a divot in the sand, his mega evolution dissolving soon after.

Nigel allowed his mega form to deactivate, he fell to the ground, panting and exhausted at his mega stone necklace fell in the sand in front of him.

After a few seconds he got back to his feel and put the necklace back on. He had left it in his treasure bag before this but there was no point in hiding it now. He looked to the unconscious Ampharos and said "for someone who claims to have knowledge mega evolutions, you didn't seem to know mega form's ability is lighting rod"

He picked up his treasure bag and retrieved an aqua seed. As the bubble formed around him Mesprit called out to him, still trapped in the vines.

"Please don't do this! What do you have to gain from stopping time and destroying the world!" Mesprit pleaded.

"I'm not destroying the world, I'm saving it. One day you'll all thank me" Nigel replied solemnly. Mesprit could sense his emotions, he wasn't lying.

"How can you believe what your doing is right?!" Mesprit demanded.

Nigel shook his head and dived into the lake, just as Blaze woke up.

A beam of light shot up from the lake, punching through the cavern roof and starting the time stop wave.

"Get these vines off me!" Mesprit yelled.

Blaze set his hand on fire and ripped them apart. The grey energy wave was a mere few feet away as Mesprit teleported away with Blaze, Tesla and Lana.

The three of them appeared a few miles away in the desert, the time wave came to a stop a few hundred yards away.

Blaze noticed it was night time, as Mesprit began to use heal pulse on Lana and Tesla's unconscious bodies, all Blaze could think was, we failed….

Author's note-yup Mega evolution is in this story! I hope I portrayed the Super Mystery Dungeon characters well enough. the two major changes are the battle with Mesprit being differnet and the evolution. Nigel will need it for later..hehe but It made more sense to me for Mesprit to listen to the explorers and more importantly put up a better fight. Uxie made a fake Groudon and memory wipes people, you think the other two would be a little better at their jobs and have defenses planned after Uxie lost. Azlef has a much better plan than his last second failsafe!
