On the Homefront

Chapter 21

Christine had never seen Mike sleep so soundly. He never moved all night, and she even checked a few times to make certain he was breathing. He hadn't talked about anything that happened, other then assuring Kaitlyn and Hannah that it was all over. He tucked Sofia and Connor in, kissed the girls goodnight and was asleep before Christine settled in for the night.

Typically, Mike was an early riser. He frequently made breakfast in bed for Christine, but this time she and the kids returned the favor. Finally waking Mike up at ten, with all his favorite breakfast foods and cuddles in bed. He was quiet but accepting of the attention they lavished on him. Finally, the kids left them while Mike finished his breakfast.

"So, I don't know if you saw any of the name suggestions, or had any thoughts for a baby name?" Christine asked.

"I saw them. I like Darcy Grace. One of Hannah's favorites." Mike said.

"I like that one too. Of course, we won't 'name' her until she's born so if the name doesn't fit, we aren't stuck. I hope you are okay with her being a girl?" Christine asked.

"I am. I really just wanted a healthy baby. I'm shocked you aren't prying for details for what's happened the last couple weeks?" Mike asked.

"Mike; I've been married to you for half my life. While I want details, I also know that you will give them when you are ready. Pushing you into an answer before you're ready to give it never bodes well. I can wait until you're ready. You've assured me that it's over. I can wait. The only thing I am really unhappy about is not hearing from you, but you said you had asked your office to call me, so I just have to accept that." Christine stated.

"Arrests were made. There isn't a whole lot I can say, but it went really deep. We found people that were involved that we didn't think would be. Some of it will trickle into the news but not all of it. Chloe finally broke. As far as my office is concerned, I'll be dealing with that on Monday. I gave the specific directive to call you and to keep check on you. If I had thought they weren't going to, I would have had Kara Greene or someone call you or come by." Mike explained.

"Will we need to testify?" Christine asked.

"No. The sort of jail they are in doesn't exactly require due process. It was legal because of the severity. We also uncovered a few other victims and they have been returned to their families. I wish I could go into more specifics, but I can't. I can only say; you and the kids are one hundred percent safe now." Mike told her.

"Okay, maybe you can't answer this, but did you have to kill anyone?" Christine asked. She wasn't so naïve to not know that Mike had killed before.

"No, I didn't kill anyone. We specifically didn't so that I could get a scope and unearth everyone involved." Mike told her.

"Okay. We are glad to have you at home again." Christine told him before giving him a long kiss. A thought occurred to her, but she wasn't sure how to ask. "The President or Olivia weren't involved in any of this, were they?" Christine asked.

"No, not at all; other then helping us with warrants and such." Mike assured her.

"Okay, good. You said it went deep, but I was hoping not that deep." Christine answered and Mike gave her a smile. He pulled her close and gave her a long and intense kiss. She was only too happy to return the kisses.

"I really missed this. It made me wonder how I managed all those years." Mike remarked as Christine cuddled on his chest.

"Me too. I missed you." Christine agreed. Mike had his hand on her stomach and was smiling at the kicks.

"Little Miss is a kicker. She'll be a soccer player." Mike said.

"Sofia is not a fan of her being a girl. She's scared of losing her baby girl status." Christine told him.

"The thing is; Kate and Hannah have never lost their baby girl status where I'm concerned, and neither will Sofia. Darcy, if that's her name, is just another person for us to love. I'll talk to Sofia soon." Mike told her.

"You know, I always knew that I loved you, but in the past several months, I have fallen even more in love with you. The way you love Connor and Sofia, want to help Kate and Hannah…me. It makes me love you even more." Christine told him.

"Loving you all is easy. It's like breathing for me. We are going to be just fine." Mike answered. Instead of kissing, he held on, Christine's favorite thing in the world.

Not the end. Still have Darcy's birth and the whole surrogacy thing to get through but close to the end.
