I woke to an argument.
"You said she'd be fine," came an irritated growl. I knew that voice. Kouga? "This is not fine."
A voice, one I didn't recognize, piped up. "You always hear the parts you like best. He said…" A hesitation, "Uncle Sesshomaru said that there might be complications. You know that this is… well, it's pretty much untested theory. But it's obviously taking root, right?"
Theory?
"Keh," started a voice that could only be InuYasha, but at that moment I was finally able to turn my head and they turned to me immediately. I groaned, and a straw appeared at my lips. Holding the cup was my son. He was older, but I knew it was him, and the shock struck me so much that my thirst was forgotten.
I tried to say his name, but my tongue stuck. When offered the drink again I took a sip without taking my eyes off of him. As soon as I could I cradled Shippo's face in my hands, just studying him, seeing him, holding him. I never dreamed of seeing him as an adult…
"Have you gone to University?" I asked without letting him go. The pads of my thumbs stroked his cheeks. These cheekbones, my goodness. I wondered which one of his parents he took after, because he grew up to be beautiful.
"Several. I keep the degrees pretty varied. Nowadays I could just audit a class, but… I have all of my diplomas in a box for you. If you want them."
Oh, my boy. Beautiful and smart.
Choked up, all I could tell him was, "I'd like nothing more."
