Yay, another chapter, and here comes Nick Fury! Time for the disclaimer - The only characters I own are my OC's. I don't have enough money to own the Avengers, though I'm willing to start a GoFundMe account for Clint. Thanks to Joss Whedon for the dialogue. I was forced to pause the movie several times so I could get the dialogue right, which was much more enjoyable than turning on closed captioning. I, of course, adapted it to this story, so I hope you enjoy it!
Everyone saw Fury and Tony heading toward the house, and they all came inside, except for Thor, who had left earlier on a mission of his own. Mikayla sat down on the couch out of the way and observed. She didn't figure they'd mind. She was Coulson's niece, and it was her house, after all. She looked around the room. Natasha was sitting at the kitchen table and Tony was in the kitchen throwing darts at a dartboard. Bruce and Steve were leaning against walls, Fury was dressing up his sandwich, and Clint was in the living room tidying up. He walked toward the kitchen, but stopped first, leaned down to Mikayla, squeezed her shoulder, and whispered, "Good idea."
Fury started the conversation. "Ultron took you folks out of play to buy himself time. My contacts all say he's building something. The amount of vibranium he made off with, I don't think it's just one thing."
"What about Ultron himself?" Steve asked.
"Oh, he's easy to track. He's everywhere. Guy's multiplying faster than a Catholic rabbit. Still doesn't help us get an angle on any of his plans, though."
Tony threw a dart, hitting the board close to the bullseye. Mikayla smiled, selfishly hoping Clint would show off his skills. "Still going after launch codes?" Tony asked.
"Yes, he is, but he's not making any headway."
Tony replied, "I cracked the Pentagon's firewall in high school on a dare." He removed the dart from the dartboard.
"Junior high for me, also NSA's, smart ass," Mikayla said under her breath, "told you I could run your IT department better than you."
"Well, I contacted our friends at the Nexus about that," Fury said.
"Nexus?" Steve asked.
Bruce cut in. "The world internet hub in Oslo. Every…every bite of data flows through there, the fastest access on earth."
Clint was intently studying several darts he was holding. "So, what'd they say?"
Fury answered, "He's fixated on the missiles, but the codes are constantly being changed."
Tony went to remove a dart and asked, "By who?" Suddenly, three darts flew so close to his face the feathers tickled his nose. He looked and each one had stuck dead center in the target. He turned to where they came from and saw Clint, who just smirked and shrugged his shoulders.
"That's my man," Mikayla said to herself. She really did enjoy seeing Tony get taken down a notch.
"Parties unknown," Fury said.
Natasha piped up. "We have an ally?"
"Ultron's got an enemy, that's not the same thing. Still, I'd pay folding money to know who it is."
Tony began formulating a plan in his head. "I might need to visit Oslo, find our unknown – "
"Well, this is good times, boss," Natasha interrupted, "but I was kind of hoping when I saw you, you'd have a little more than that."
"I do, I have you. Back in the day, I had eyes everywhere, ears everywhere else. You kids had all the tech you could dream of. Here we all are," he continued talking while walking to the kitchen table, "back on earth, nothing but our wits and our wills to save the world." He looked around at the group and saw the concern on each of their faces. "Ultron said the Avengers are the only thing between him and his mission, and whether or not he admits it, his mission is global destruction. All this," he waved his hand around, "laid in a grave." Clint looked over at Mikayla, the rest of the team stared at each other, thinking about what was precious to them. "So, stand, outwit the platinum bastard."
Natasha, trying to lighten the mood, said, "Steve doesn't like that kind of talk."
Steve nodded toward her and replied, "You know what, Romanoff?" Natasha gave a slight smirk.
Fury asked, "So, what does he want?"
"To become better," Steve said. "Better than us." 'That'll never happen,' Mikayla thought to herself, 'they're the freaking Avengers.' "He keeps building bodies.
"Person bodies," Tony said. "The human form isn't efficient. Biologically speaking, we're outmoded, but he keeps coming back to it."
"And you two programmed him to protect the human race and amazingly failed," Natasha murmured.
While the others were talking, Bruce made his way over to the kitchen table and began studying the placemats, which were decorated with butterflies in various stages of growth.
Bruce spoke up. "They don't need to be protected, they need to evolve." Everyone turned their attention to him. "Ultron's going to evolve."
"How?" Fury asked after taking a drink of tea.
"Has anyone been in contact with Helen Cho?" Bruce asked. He looked around and no one could answer him. The group came up with a plan, then went and donned their uniforms. As they did that, Mikayla began cleaning up the kitchen and dining room, trying to ignore the sinking feeling she had in the pit of her stomach. She realized this was the first time she'd seen the team leave on a mission. Before she'd been at the apartment and Clint would leave from the tower. She noticed that everyone had a routine and calmly went about it as she stayed out of their way.
Steve, who at this point had transformed back into Captain America, said, "I'll take Natasha and Clint."
Tony added, "OK, strictly recon. I'll hit the Nexus. I'll join you as soon as I can." The two men began walking toward the door.
"If Ultron's really building a body – "
Tony interrupted Steve. "He'll be more powerful than any of us, maybe all of us. An android designed by a robot."
"You know," Steve quipped, "I really miss the days when the weirdest thing science ever created was me."
Fury walked by while donning his jacket. "I'll drop Banner off at the tower. Mind if I borrow Miss Hill?"
Tony snapped back, "She's all yours, apparently." Fury turned and glared at him. "What are you going to do?"
"I don't know," Fury answered. "Something dramatic, I hope," then walked out the door.
Clint met Mikayla in the hallway. "I'm not going to tell you to be careful, Clint, because I know you're always careful, that's why you're so good at what you do. I'll just tell you I love you and see you when you get back." He wrapped his arms around her waist; she cupped his face in her hands and they kissed. "If you're lost you can look and you will find me," Mikayla whispered.
"If you fall, I will catch you," Clint replied.
"I will be waiting," Mikayla finished the verse and they kissed again. "I love you, RH."
"Love you, too, Sharky. Call Misty and have her come stay with you if you don't go back to the city, that way I know you won't be alone out here."
She nodded. She followed him out and stood on the porch as they took off in the Quinjet and stayed out there until it disappeared from her view. She turned around and headed back into the house, still unable to get rid of the knot in her stomach. She grabbed her phone and called Misty. "Hey, bestie, up for a little vacation at the house?"
"Clint dump you already?"
Mikayla bit the inside of her cheek to keep from verbally lashing back. She remembered Misty still was unaware of exactly what Clint did, what his job entailed. "He's out on assignment, so, you know, the girls will play while the boys are away. Thought we'd have a girls' night in, dress in our PJ's, watch sappy movies."
Misty sighed. "I'd love to, but I've got to meet with a client about redoing their office space."
"No worries. We'll do it another time."
"Are you okay? I can reschedule if you need me to."
"I'll be fine, Misty. You keep your appointment and be sure to let me know how it goes."
"Will do. Later, M."
"Later, M." Mikayla disconnected. She looked out the window, saw the wood still in piles, and decided to pass the time by bringing it into the house. She spent the next hour or so carrying it in and distributing it among the various fireplaces. She looked around the house and tidied up a bit, figuring she could finish in the morning. "I could use a nice, hot bath about now." She went upstairs and soaked in the clawfoot tub for a while, thinking about nothing and about everything. After the bath, she was tired, so she went to bed.
