Making my way upstairs, I couldn't help but still look behind me every few seconds. The paranoia of someone being behind me in this place just wasn't gonna go away. Especially considering what has been happening to me as of late. Every time I look up, one of them is either in my face or popping up to drag me away somewhere. Its becoming an unfortunate cycle.
Finally back in my room, I dragged my tired feet over to the bed and flopped down on it back first. I tossed my arm over my eyes and sighed loudly. So many things began running through my head as I laid still hoping to somehow rest my exhausted mind. I began thinking about everything that's been happening in the mere hours of me being here. About what Reiji told me and done to me, Subaru showing a side that I never would've thought I'd see and Shu being...Shu I suppose. I know my wounds are gone but I can't help but still feel an invisible pain. I highly doubt that I will ever get use to them biting me but at the same time, I could almost feel myself becoming a little use to it. Like I may be accepting that this is gonna be a part of my life now. Kind of like...Yui.
I wonder how she got to adapt to this lifestyle. Constantly being feasted on for your blood, no privacy, harassment and god knows what other unholy things they've done to her. She did say that she had a hard time when she first got here but I'm starting to want a little bit more detail in what she meant. I know if I ask, she'd tell me but how much would she elaborate. Would she be comfortable talking about it? Thinking about how horrible it definitely was for her, bringing up unwanted memories and so on. I removed my arm from my face and sighed loudly.
"I'm surprised I haven't had a mental breakdown."
An amused giggle cut through the quiet room, causing me to almost die inside. I tried so hard not to groan out in annoyance.
"I'm glad you haven't had one Bitch chan. It wouldn't be as fun if your state of mind wasn't intact~."
Tiredly sitting up, I was met with Laito leaning up against the door with his arms crossed. He looked as if he has been waiting for me to return to my room. I wonder if he's been in here the whole time I've been outside.
We met each others eyes and had a temporary stare down until I broke the silence.
"Laito..."
I couldn't help but sound absolutely annoyed as his name left my mouth. He could tell that I didn't want him here right now but that obviously wasn't going to deter him. He began walking towards me with a mild skip in his step.
"Well don't you look happy to see me."
I rolled my eyes as the sarcastic tone left my lips.
"Yes, I'm absolutely ecstatic."
Without warning, Laito plopped down right next to me and crossed his legs. Our shoulders were touching and I couldn't help but put a little distance between us to make it a little more comfortable for me.
"Still so detached from me?"
Laito's arm wrapped itself around my shoulders pulling me close. His sudden move caused my heart to jump in my throat.
"There, isn't that better?"
I turned to glare at him.
"Not in the slightest. Anyways, what do you want? I was about to go back to sleep."
His eyebrows shot up.
"Did you forget why I invited you here?"
That's right. He claimed to know something about my physical oddity. Which I highly doubt he does, but I couldn't help but get the feeling that he may know something. Anything at all. I mean he and his family are vampires, what if he's seen something similar in his life and may have an explanation. Surely there aren't just vampires roaming around. What if there are other strange things amongst us. No way, I'm thinking way too hard into this. Yui suggested I open up any possibilities, but I was cautious.
Sighing, I shook my head.
"No I didn't, I just don't believe you."
Laito's arm slid from my shoulders and I took that opportunity to move away from him.
"Bitch chan, you wound me. I told you I want to help you."
I stood up from the bed and looked down at him.
"Help me? Why?"
Laito folded his arms and a smirk appeared on his face.
"Because I love you of course. I want to put a smile on your face and have you finally admit your feelings for me."
He then stood and placed his hands on my shoulders. He giggled when he saw me rolling my eyes.
"Okay okay, its because I'm...bored I suppose."
I shook out of his grip and scoffed.
"Bored? Laito this isn't some game to me. If you're planning on toying with me because you think it'd be fun, then you can immediately cross that off your list."
I turned around to walk away from him but he then grabbed my wrist. I faced him and saw that he suddenly had a minor look of seriousness on his face. Before I could tell him to release me, he reached in his pocket and pulled out a folded piece of paper. He waved it in front of my face and smiled.
"Unfortunately I can't cross that from my list. If I'm going to share something with you, I at least deserve to have some fun at the same time."
My eyes followed the paper that danced in front of me.
"What's that?"
"This. Could be a possible answer to a question or an add on to your many questions darling~."
I foolishly reached for it only for Laito to playfully yank it away from me out of my reach.
"Ah ah my sweetness, do you really think I'm going to just give it to you? Like I said, I plan on getting some fun out of this."
I mean obviously it wasn't gonna be so easy but this can all be one big ruse of his just to get me to let my guard down. Pulling my wrist out if his grip, I folded my arms.
"What if there is nothing at all on that paper, and I'll simply be falling into a trap."
Laito's finger tapped on the corner of his mouth as he contemplated my accusation.
"That could be possible, but..."
He lifted the paper and unfolded it while running his eyes along the paper.
"It could also be a chance that there is something here that may answer a question or bring up questions. To be honest with you darling, this is one thing that has me just as curious as you. Why miss out on something that has even piqued my interest?"
I could feel myself began to give in to temptation. I was curious to see what was on that paper he had. It appeared to be a letter. Feeling my head screaming at me to not ask to read, I could also feel my heart telling me to take the chance.
Laito saw me utterly conflicted on what I should do. He came closer to me and stared down.
"So? Do you want to read it or shall I do it for you?"
I let out a huff of irritated breath and held out my hand while giving Laito the longest glare.
"Fine I'll read it. I swear to God Laito you better not be pulling me by the nose with this. I'll never forgive you."
A victorious smile stretched on his lips.
"Stare at me like that any longer, and my clothes will just melt away."
With a disgusted groan, I snatched the paper from him and walked back to the bed to sit down. Laito stayed right where he stood and looked at me as my eyes ran over the letter. I saw at the top corner of the letter, there were some initials. K.H. They were written quite fancy. Whoever the person was, must be a person of class. Not paying anymore attention to the two letters, I sat there and began taking in every word carefully and processing all that I was reading. It wasn't much written but it was definitely enough for me to stare at the letter in surprise and shock. This letter was addressed to...Reiji. And much to my shock, I was mentioned in it.
Reiji
I know you're surprised that I've sent you a letter but I feel that this should be kept quite low to the ground. I simply wanted to tell you that you should keep a close eye on this Hiyori girl. I know I told you before I left, but I'm sure you have the same suspicions as I do. You'll understand why I want you to do this, so make sure to keep me informed.
K.H.
As I sat there staring blankly at the paper, I felt Laito sit down right next to me and tilt his head over to look at the paper as well. My shock and puzzled expression caused him to snicker a little.
"I have to admit, I was a bit surprised as well. So many secrets already exist under this roof but none of them were as interesting as this."
I blinked snapping myself out of my spaced out trance and turned to him while waving the paper at him.
"Where did you get this?"
He shrugged nonchalantly.
"Reiji's study. It was just lying there face down, so I got curious and took it upon myself to just pick it up."
I shook my head and tossed the letter down on the bed as if it was made of acid.
"Wouldn't he be looking for this? I mean, why does he have this? Why was this sent to him? Who's this K.H. person and why do they want Reiji to keep an eye on me?"
I suddenly stood up and began pacing the floor. My heart began beating so fast, I felt as if I was having a panic attack. I laid my hand on my forehead and took a deep breath. What was going on? And here I thought it was just my imagination. Something deep down was telling me that there was more here and I felt this odd feeling that I was somehow meant to be here. In this manor and in their lives. I couldn't contain the small tingle in my stomach that things were just gonna get more and more out of the ordinary.
Maybe this was a mistake. My gut feeling and that letter. Perhaps the person who sent the letter was talking about another Hiyori. I mean there could always be a possibility that someone shares my first name. Besides, I didn't see a last name but then again...it was sent to Reiji. Maybe I should ask Reiji if he knows another person with my name? I mentally shook my head. That wasn't a bright idea. I mean he'd wonder immediately why I'd ask such a ridiculous question and how would I explain me having a letter that was addressed to him? He already gave me a threat filled warning, I'd just be giving him a reason to carry out his threats and ruin any chance I'd have in him somewhat trusting me to even be here.
As I stood in place trying to calm myself down, I felt a cool hand lay itself on my shoulder. I turned and laid my eyes on Laito who was suddenly by my side with a knowing grin on his face.
"Now now just relax and calm down before you go off in a random direction in that head of yours."
I turned towards him with one thing in mind.
"Laito do you know anything about...that?"
I pointed towards the letter.
He simply shrugged his shoulders and folded his arms.
"Only what I read."
I stared at him knowing he was hiding something, I decided to press a bit further.
"Even though you said you were surprised, it barely showed on your face."
"Well I did tell you that I read it before you."
That's true he did but I knew he was hiding more somewhere between the lines.
"Its clear that you want to keep me guessing and in the dark, but can you at least tell me did anything cross your mind as you were reading it? Anything...odd?"
Laito had a somewhat blank expression on his face and an unsure look in his eye. Then he suddenly smiled widely and I could feel my stomach drop. He obviously wanted something in return. I sighed preparing myself for whatever he was about request from me.
He closed even more space between us and I had to force myself to not step away. The more I fought him, the longer we'd play his little "games". I lifted my head to meet his playful eyes and he looked into my nervous ones. What felt like an eternity, he finally opened his mouth.
"How about I tell you, if you do something for me?"
I held back from groaning and rolling my eyes.
"Okay fine. What do you want? Blood?"
I pulled my hair to the side a bit, exposing my neck and tilting my head to the side.
A look of mild surprise crossed his face but then it was replaced with a lusty glint.
"Its nice having you willing every once in a while."
His arm wrapped around my back pulling me chest to chest with him. My heart leap in fear but then I remembered that I was the one that offered myself. He didn't force me or anything, at least not right at this moment. His head then came down to the crook of my neck and he inhaled deeply with a pleased moan. The coolness of his breath made my skin tingle on contact and I couldn't stop the shiver that went through my body. Just what in the world was that just now? What was wrong with me?
As soon as those questions went through my head, Laito giggled breaking me out of my temporary trance.
"It peeves me a bit that you fight this feeling so much."
I frowned and scoffed.
"Well then continue to be peeved because I'm not gonna give in."
He then nuzzled his nose against my cheek.
"Uh oh I caught you. So you admit that you've been tempted~?"
Catching on to what he had just said, I went to push away from him but of course to no avail. He brought his head up from my cheek and looked down at me.
"No, I've never been tempted or anything. I simply meant that..."
Laito cut me off midway with a confident smirk.
"Meant what? That you've thought about it? Thought about liking it? Thought about willingly falling into my web of charm? Thought about begging for my painful yet blissful touches? You can deny it all you want, but at the end of it all..."
Laito brought his mouth towards mine hovering just slightly over my quivering lips.
"You'll still be thinking about wanting it."
Next thing you know, his lips slanted over mine and he kissed me. Neither of us closed our eyes, so it was very uncomfortable holding eye contact while he was kissing me. Anger and annoyance glowed in my eyes but in his it was pure...emptiness. He was staring at me with nothing behind his gaze. His usual teasing glint was nowhere to be seen and I shortly found myself somewhat missing it in that very short moment.
The bland kiss was soon over when Laito pulled away from me but still held my eyes. It was strange. He was looking at me as if he was just lost in thought. He still had me held close to him but his hold on me wasn't as tight. I found myself wiggling out of his grasp but still stood a decent distance from him.
Finally snapping back to reality, Laito looked at me with a slight frown dressed on his forehead. It was then cleared up within a second. Laito pulled away from me and looked down at me with a slight look of annoyance on his face.
"Why are you so bothered by something so natural?"
His question caught me by surprise and I found myself not being able to answer him right away.
"What?"
Laito cocked his eyebrow.
"You clearly are attracted to me and I've noticed that you've enjoyed quite a few things I've done to you, so why fight it? Its fine to feel pleasure."
I must've looked repulsed at the moment because I could feel my face twist in disgust.
"Are you serious? You want to know why? Because I'm not thinking about that sort of thing right now, that's why. I'm focusing on school, my friends and my family. I don't have time to even consider those kind of raunchy thoughts or activities. There is nothing wrong with it but not everyone makes that their goal in life to explore those kinds of fulfillments. How can you not understand that? Have you always been like this?"
His face became void of any expression and it seemed as if he was thinking about what I had just said. But I truly wondered, how did he get like this? I mean he's lived quite a long time right? So surely something somewhere down the line made him the way he is today. No one actually spends their whole life the way he is right? Maybe its arrogance? I mean they all are very beautiful boys, so they can't help but take advantage of the situation. Yet I couldn't help but think about his brothers, Reiji, Kanato and Subaru. They are attractive but they don't seem to want anything to do with the opposite sex. So maybe its not cockiness but something else that must've happened.
He must've forgot that I was right in front of him, because his eyes ended up glossing over staring into nothing. A strange feeling of concern and curiosity overcame me and I couldn't help but reach out to him. Suddenly feeling...worried?
"L-laito..."
My touch brought him out of his trance and he looked at me clearly remembering our current closeness, and a smirk appeared.
"You're always so curious about me, I'm truly flattered."
Removing my hand from his arm, I sighed.
"Don't be. Everything about you would make anyone curious but I assure you that it wouldn't be because they'd want to get to know you."
His hand made its way to my cheek lifting my face towards his.
"Oh I'm sure deep down you want to know more about me. Just as I'd love to know more about you."
I shut my eyes as he leaned in again towards my neck and opened his mouth. As soon as his breath touched my neck, I braced myself for the bite. I almost forgot that I offered myself to him not too long ago. As I waited for the bite to come, I realized that it actually may not be coming at all. I hesitantly pried open my eyes and saw that Laito was staring at me in amusement.
"A-aren't you gonna do it...?"
Clicking his tongue, Laito tapped his finger on his chin.
"I just thought of something that could be just as...interesting."
My heart dropped at whatever other idea of collateral that has just crossed his mind. He saw my face contort into a troubled look and giggled.
"You look as if I'm gonna eat you up. Don't you worry, its something that's actually quite...civil."
I cocked my eyebrow.
"Civil?"
Laito backed away from me with a still sly smile on his face. He then raised his hand as if he was swearing on the man above.
"Yes. Of course there will be a little spin on it but it won't tarnish your pride. Unfortunately for me~."
I narrowed my eyes at him obviously not trusting a single thing he is saying. Curious yet nervous, I finally had to ask.
"So what is it you want?"
Tilting his head, Laito responded.
"Join me for lunch at school."
The look of surprise and confusion adorned my face.
"I'm...sorry?"
He reached out and tugged at a strand of my hair.
"You're always with Bitch chan during that time and I can't help but feel a bit jealous. I don't like being lonely you know?"
Ignoring his pestering gesture, I sighed.
"You lonely? Oh please. You have a flock of girls at your beck and call."
His mouth twitched upward with a small knowing smirk.
"That's true that I love to have my fun with them, but its a bit boring when they just submit all the time. Sure its easy for me, but every now and then..."
Laito's hand cupped my cheek.
"A bit of a fight is of course more exciting and fun."
I turned my head away to escape his cold hand and scoffed.
Just what was he really planning? Surely he wasn't serious about simply having lunch with me, of course there's something else he's got planned ahead.
"Just what makes you think lunch with you is gonna be "civil" as you so pleasantly put it? Last time you invited me to something, I ended up in your bed with blood loss, tired and possibly drugged. What are you getting out of it?"
Laito backed away from me and headed towards the door.
"The real question is, what would we both be getting out of it."
Giving me a wink, Laito practically slithered out of the door as soon as he cracked it open. When the door shut, I exhaled not even realized I had been holding my breath.
Everything that boy says and does just sends me in many different directions. I mean what did he even mean just now? I hated when he did that.
Running my hand over my face, I let out an exhausted sigh and looked at the clock. Noticing that it was a few minutes after eight, I thought about heading out and seeing if Yui was awake but as soon as I was about to make my way towards the door, a knock came.
Memories of last night immediately sprung up and I hesitantly responded.
"Y-yeah...?"
Relief washed over me like a fresh bucket of water at the sound of Yui's voice.
"Hiyori? Are you decent?"
Without wanting to wait a second longer, I hurried to the door and pulled it open. Greeting her with a bright smile.
"Yui good morning."
She smiled.
"Good morning to you too. Did you just wake up?"
The obvious tiredness on my face showed.
"Well let's just say that I've been up for a while now."
I noticed Yui inhale softly as if she was smelling the air around me. That's right. She's a vampire too, I'm sure she can smell Laito's scent in here and and all over me.
She caught me staring at her and she turned red.
"I'm sorry Hiyori, sometimes I forget that I'm doing it. I'm assuming Laito was in here just now?"
I nodded.
"You assumed correct. He probably knew you were coming, so he left rather quickly."
I made my way to the bed and noticed that the letter was gone. When did Laito even grab it? Either way, I'm glad he did. It saved me the trouble of making up an excuse for Yui had she asked anything about it. Sitting down on the bed, I stared at Yui as she watched me.
"Hiyori, do you plan on going home today?"
I nodded with a grin.
"Yeah my Dad gets home tonight. It's gonna be great to see him. I'm not gonna overload him when he gets home, I'll wait until tomorrow to talk to him about all that's been going on."
Yui nodded in agreement. As much as I'm eager to get some stuff off my chest and questions answered, I need to be more considerate. He's been gone and working hard, the last thing he's gonna need is me pestering him about some questionable activity.
I went around the room to get my stuff ready so that I could be on my way home. Yui was kind enough to help me get what little things I had and have the limousine ready to get me home.
As all my things got gathered, Yui walked me downstairs to the front door and walked with me to the car. I waved at her as I made my way inside the car. All the way up until the car was out of site, I kept my eyes on Yui as she went back inside the manor. I was relieved and happy to be going home. Just as expected, my time there was stressful and tiresome. I was sore, stiff and exhausted beyond belief. I couldn't wait to get in my bed and take a hot comfortable bath.
The car pulled up in front of my house and I found myself rushing to get out. Barely waiting for me to make it to the door, the car was already pulling off. I unlocked the door and sighed a breath of relief.
I was home.
Dad comes home tonight and I wanna give him a proper welcome. I wanted to cook his favorite dish along with some good dessert.
After taking a bath, I got comfortable and lounged out on the couch for a while enjoying the peace and quiet. I looked around for the clock and saw that it was only 9 a.m. I'm gonna have plenty of time until Dad gets here to think of what kind of dinner I should have waiting on him when he gets here. I'm debating on a good juicy steak for him with a side of good steamed vegetables or maybe fry him up some chicken. He'd eat anything I make, so I don't think he'd have any complaints no matter what I made. I flipped on the television just to add some kind of background noise, soon after I did that, I heard my phone ring from my room. I couldn't help but sigh a little at the fact that I'd have to get up just to go answer it, but what if its Yui. I rolled off the couch and lightly jogged to my room to stop the annoying ringing. Snatching my phone up, I flipped it open to find Yusuke's name on the screen. I couldn't help but smile a bit as I went to answer it.
"Morning Yusuke."
"Morning Hiyori, sorry for calling so early."
I started pacing while feeling myself get flustered.
"Oh Yusuke its no problem. I'm an early bird anyways. Everything alright?"
"Yeah everything's fine, I was wondering if it'd be okay if I came over for a while later?"
A small part of me couldn't help but wonder why he'd want to come over but then again, he's my friend. He likely just wants to hang out of course.
"Sure of course. Besides, I think you may need to help me with something anyways."
Yusuke chuckled."Another hard labor task?"
"No nothing like that, just some little shopping and brainstorming."
"So it is hard labor?"
I laughed.
"You know, you don't take me for someone to be so dramatic."
"I'm full of surprises. Well I'll definitely be over to help you with whatever you need."
"Thanks. Come on over whenever you're ready."
And with that, we hung up the phone. I'm glad that Yusuke called, because now this has just gotten a bit easier for me. He'd be able to help me carry the groceries and even help me a bit in the kitchen.
Soon after I got dressed in some proper outting clothes, the doorbell rang and I skipped to the door. I opened it and gladly greeted Yusuke with the biggest smile. Taking notice of my chipper mood, Yusuke couldn't help but comment on it.
"I don't think I've ever seen you so happy to see me."
I moved out of the way to let him in while letting out an embarrassed chuckle.
"Did I really look so ecstatic?"
Yusuke made his way inside and sat at the table waiting for me.
"I didn't mean anything bad by it, you just look like you haven't seen a pleasant face in a while."
I walked into the kitchen to get some small snacks I made for Yusuke and myself. I whipped us up some small sandwiches and cut up some apples. I didn't have anymore tea, so I poured us both some fruit juice that was hiding in the fridge.
"Well I wouldn't put it like that exactly, but I just got home this morning."
His eyebrows shot up in curiosity.
"Did you?"
I sat our food on the table and took a seat across from him.
"Yeah. I um, spent the night at Yui's home."
Yusuke picked up a sandwich and took a decent sized bite.
"Already having sleepovers?"
I shrugged and took a sip of my drink.
"Its actually my second time sleeping over."
There was a look of worry and uncertainty that showed in his eyes as he sipped at his drink. Its like he wanted to say something but held his tongue.
"It must be nice to be so close so soon. They say that it's not about time, but about quality. You two just clicked immediately didn't you?"
I nodded with a mouth full of food.
"Its strange. I...I usually wouldn't even think myself to quickly befriend anybody and yet Yui was able to break a barrier I had no idea was there. Same with you Yusuke. You also just came into my life and I pretty much welcomed you with open arms. I'm truly happy though that I've managed to venture out of my circle."
"Were you always so closed off before."
I sighed while wiping away the crumbs on my mouth.
"Not necessarily but maybe I wasn't aware. I don't know, I mean once my mom died I was bent on making something of myself and working hard to not become something my Dad would worry over. So not only was I unintentionally distancing myself from people for my own well being but for my Dad's as well."
"You felt no friends meant no distractions?"
I nodded.
"Yeah. I mean if I made a friend then fine but I wasn't exactly out and about looking for friends. I stayed to myself."
"Because it was easier."
I nodded somberly.
"I'm ashamed now to say, yes. But now I regret thinking that way because I have Yui and you. Friends like you guys have made things fun, lively and I feel like I've opened up a door for many other things."
"Well you certainly have opened up some doors. More and more people seem to be becoming more attracted to you. Like a magnet or something."
That's actually something that I've thought about. I can't believe how many colorful people have gradually entered my life since I've started going to my new school. I mean Yui and Yusuke are the only two people that I've actually considered friends. The Sakamaki's aren't even close to even be considered to be put in the friend category. They're merely acquaintances. I know them because of Yui but nothing more.
"That's something I've noticed most definitely as well. There is even this other girl that I met at school. Her name is Mika and she's really nice as far as I know her."
Yusuke's eyebrows shot up in light surprise.
"Wow Hiyori, you're like a magnet for real."
I couldn't help but blush.
"You think so...?"
He couldn't help but nod.
"Absolutely. It doesn't take much. You ever thought that you were actually more popular than you thought?"
I shook my head disagreeing adamantly.
"Oh no way. I was barely the center of attention. I highly doubt that I ever crossed anyone's mind."
Yusuke smirked at my modesty.
"To yourself I'm sure but to others, maybe not."
Right when I was about to respond to Yusuke, I heard my phone ring. I stood from my seat.
"Sorry about that, I'll be right back."
Yusuke nodded being perfectly fine with me answering my phone.
I darted off to my room to answer my phone. I was expecting it to be Yui but it was my Dad.
"Dad!"
"Hey sweetie, I'm calling to let you know I'm back in Japan, I'll be home hours from now."
"Oh Dad that's great, really. Hope you didn't burn yourself out."
He laughed.
"Oh I'm fine. To be honest I felt like I wasn't even working. As for tonight, I was thinking of getting us sushi..."
"Actually Dad don't get that. I wanted to give you a good home welcome so I'm gonna cook something amazing for your return home."
I could already hear Dad about to insist on me not doing all the work but I wasn't having it.
"I don't want to hear it, I'm gonna do it and you're gonna love it."
He let out a defeated chuckle.
"There's no winning against you. Well I'll be looking forward to it. Oh and Hiyori?"
"Yeah?"
"Did you still want to talk about whatever it was you wanted to talk about?"
Oh right. I'll be able to tell Dad what's all been going on with my body. Something I haven't brought up in years. Even though I said I wanted to be considerate and wait until Dad gets well rested but maybe I should just get it out of the way and off my chest. If I put it off now, chances are I'll continue to put it off again.
"Yeah for sure. I just hope that I get answers."
He sighed. "Hiyori..."
"Well anyways, I gotta get going, I gotta get your surprise dinner ready."
He sounded as if he wanted to say something more but didn't.
"Alright dear, see you when I get home."
"Yup."
I hung up the phone and ran my hand over my face. A part of me still felt bad for what I'm about to lay on Dad. I mean he's just got back from working out of town, and I'm gonna deliver possibly worrisome news to him. But I can't keep it from him any longer. He has to know and I need answers. Especially regarding Mom.
I went back out to where Yusuke was and saw that he had the television on.
"Hey sorry about that. That was Dad just letting me know he'd be home in a few hours."
"He must be tired."
I shrugged. "He sounded alright over the phone but who knows. He may clonk out as soon as he steps through the door."
I took one look at the clock and saw that it was after 1pm.
"Look at the time, we have to get going Yusuke! I wasted time, I'm sorry."
Standing up from the couch, he stretched and flipped off the TV.
"Its nothing to apologize for, besides its never a waste of time when hanging with you."
Not knowing what else to do or say, I let out a flustered giggle and grabbed my things so that we can head out to the store. It sorta bothered me whenever Yusuke said stuff like that to me. I wasn't sure if I disliked or liked when he said things like that to me. I couldn't help but constantly hear Yui's claims of Yusuke liking me in my head. Maybe she's right but how would I know? As far as I know, I've never had a guy like me nor have I liked a guy. So I wouldn't know how it would feel even if I did. I'm happy when I'm with him but I'm happy with quite a few people in my life, and it doesn't mean anything other than the obvious. Well with Yusuke my heart races a bit when he says nice things to me. So perhaps that's a sign of something new. Either way, it was something I wouldn't be too quick to explore considering Laito and all. I knew that that was unfair for me to not even consider Yusuke because of Laito, but right now, I had my guard up. Even if I did allow Yusuke to pursue me, I couldn't help but see those mischievous green eyes looking at me daringly.
"Hiyori?"
Yusuke's voice snapped me out of my thoughts.
"Yeah?"
"You alright."
I nodded with an unsure smile.
"Yeah sure. Let's go. Just a warning, you may have quite a bit to carry for me."
"I never took you for a slave driver."
I grabbed my things and headed to the door.
"Well, I am full of surprises."
Genjiro Yamaguchi had just hung up the phone from talking to his daughter.
"Thank you for letting me call my daughter sir."
Tougo Sakamaki raised his hand dismissively.
"No need to thank me, besides you don't have to ask to make a call to your child."
Genjiro bowed his head lightly.
"I appreciate that sir."
"Also, I don't think I've ever had such an efficient assistant before. So I'm more than willing to give you a lot of privileges."
Genjiro smiled lightly.
"You're too kind sir but I'm simply doing my job and working hard for my daughter."
Tougo folded his arms curiously.
"If you don't mind me asking, you're a single parent correct?"
Genjiro nodded.
"I am. Its just been me and my daughter since my wife passed."
"Ah, I offer my condolences."
"Thank you. We do fine now but Its only natural that we miss her occasionally."
Tougo looked out of the window as the many cars whizzed by.
"I myself, is also a single parent. Unfortunately I'm not around them a lot, so when I do drop by, they treat me like a stranger."
Almost genuine sympathy came across his face."I'm sorry to hear that sir. You have sons?"
Tougo gave a single nod.
"I do. Six I daresay and they are all quite a handful, but I suppose that's my fault."
"They're spoiled?"
Even Genjiro was shocked by what left his mouth. This was his boss, he shouldn't be too quick to say what's on the tip of his tongue. Of course it was too late to take it back, so he simply sat with his head held high, almost challenging Tougo's eye contact. Just when he thought his boss was gonna lash at him for being so honest, his boss let out a relaxed laugh.
"Yes you are right indeed. Not only are you a top notch assistant but you're also honest. My past assistants wouldn't dare utter such things off the top of the head."
He shook his head apologetically.
"I didn't mean any harm in what I said, I just..."
"No, you're right. If anything, I think spoiled is too light of a word to describe my children. They also take advantage of who they are, which is why Ryoutei tolerates them so to speak."
This caught Genjiro's attention.
"They attend Ryoutei Academy?"
He nodded.
"Yes. Although despite the school's reputation, most of my sons studies aren't quite up to the school's expectations let alone my own. Your daughter attends there as well?"
"She does. This is her first time attending a night school, but she's adjusted very well."
Tougo raised his brows mildly impressed. "Ryoutei is a very strict and prestigious school, she must excel academically."
Proudly, Genjiro smiled.
"Very much so sir. Sometimes I think she'll run herself into the ground though. She works just as hard as me."
"You don't see each other much?"
Genjiro hesitated a bit on the sudden question and thought about his answer. Hiyori has gotten use to both of their own schedules but he often worries if she truly is alright with their lack of closeness. Well actually, as of late, they've been doing alright. He thought back to that night during dinner, how she came clean about how she felt about him rarely ever being home because he had to work. She hated it but grew to understand. Him being gone almost all the time did nothing but encourage her to strive to work just as hard as he does. And that alone makes him the happiest Father.
"Yamaguchi?"
Suddenly realizing that his boss was calling his name, he snapped back to attention.
"I apologize sir, just your question made me think about something."
Tougo nodded understandingly.
"I'm the one who should apologize. Didn't mean to ask you such a personal question."
Genjiro sighed and shook his head lightly.
"Not personal at all, was just merely thinking of an appropriate response."
Sighing again, Genjiro continued.
"Well we...I mean there was a time where we saw each other very little but even then it barely did any harm to us being as close as we are."
Tougo nodded thinking about his own children.
"I envy you in that department Yamaguchi. I'm already not around much but if I were to end up missing, my children wouldn't bat an eye in the slightest."
"Sir that's..."
Tougo appeared to had beat him to the punch. "Sad?"
Genjiro shrugged.
"I was going to say a pity but I suppose sad is a nicer way of putting it."
Laughing like he's heard the best joke ever, Tougo ran his hand through his hair.
"Reliable and honest. I did right in hiring you when I saw you."
"You're really too kind sir. I'm still grateful for your offer."
Tougo stuck his hand out.
"Let me hope you stick around longer than the rest and that we both benefit from one another."
Genjiro looked at his boss' hand and then stuck his hand out then firmly gripped his hand in a firm shake.
"Yes sir."
Yusuke and I made it back to my house almost rather quickly. Shopping wasn't much of an issue because I had Yusuke with me. He suggested I make my Dad a hearty steak with a good side of some well cooked vegetables.
I decided to get some stuff for a salad and some potatoes to go along side for the steak. As for dessert, I chose to make a mixed berry tart. Yusuke said that he would prefer to get fresh berries from his Mom's garden rather than the store. I of course was all for that idea. I couldn't help but think back to how delicious those strawberries was that he brought me before.
We both started prepping the food with ease until I got to the steak.
"Yusuke, you've cooked a steak before right?"
"Don't worry I'll help you. We have to cook it on the skillet first. One side and continue cooking it in the oven."
I looked around and got out a good skillet.
"Will this do?"
Yusuke clapped his hands together. "Perfect. I'll wash and season the steak."
"And I'll do the potatoes and salad. That's the easy part."
We both began moving around busying ourselves with each of our own tasks.
"After I season the meat, I'll head over to my house and get the berries you'll need."
I smiled.
"Yusuke I really do appreciate all that you're doing."
"Its really no problem at all. Hiyori like I told you, anyway I can I'd like to be there for you."
Realizing how that must've sounded, Yusuke couldn't stop the small tint of pink that covered both of his cheeks. He then cleared his throat to break the mild awkwardness.
"Okay I'll be back in a few minutes, you can set the fire low, add a bit of olive oil and place the meat in the skillet. I'll be back way before that one side is done."
Still a bit flustered by his bold statement, I nodded as Yusuke wiped off his hands then headed entrance way and out the door. Trying to clear my head of what he said, I did as Yusuke said and watched as the meat sizzled calmly. As I was about to add more vegetables to the bowl of chopped lettuce, I heard my phone once again ring. I stopped what I was doing and jogged to my room to get my phone. Seeing as how we weren't done with the food, I was hoping it wasn't Dad calling to tell me that he was gonna be home sooner than expected.
"Hello?"
The voice that responded on the other end made me wish it was my Dad. Heck, it made me wish it was the Devil, but then again, it was pretty darn close.
"Hi hi my precious lover, I didn't expect you to sound so happy. Must be a good day today~."
I rolled my eyes and groaned."Laito what the heck do you want?"
Feinting his hurt at my response, he let out a sad like sound.
"What's the matter? I can't call you to see how you're doing."
I pursed my lips together, not believing a single thing that's spewing out his mouth.
"Okay fine. I'll humor you. As a matter of fact, I've been having a pretty nice day since I left your dreadful home."
This seemed to catch his attention.
"May I ask whose responsible for your pleasant day?"
A part of me wanted to gloat over the fact that it was Yusuke who was putting me in such a good mood but then again, I wouldn't want to stoop to his level of being so petty. So I told him half the truth.
"Well my Dad is coming home today, so I'll get to see him."
I suddenly had this urge to tease him when I thought about Laito's Dad coming home as well. Then I thought I'd try something with him.
"Then that means your Father is coming home as well, aren't you happy also?"
Okay...whoa. Just what on earth compelled me to say something like that just now? And with that tone no less? Before I could quickly try to take back what I had just said, the sound of my name being called stopped me from doing so. With my phone in my hand, I ran out of my room and saw that Yusuke had came back with the berries.
"I'm back."
Yusuke pointed at my phone.
"Your Dad again?"
Blinking in surprise, I almost sputtered my words.
"Um no, its um...Yui! Also sorry for leaving the meat unattended. I thought it was Dad that called and rushed to answer it."
Yusuke shook his head.
"No worries, the meat is actually fine. I'll slip it into the oven. Look here."
Yusuke raised the bag.
"I got you blueberries, raspberries, strawberries and blackberries. Hope they're to your liking."
He then placed them on the table and went to finish up with the meat.
I was thinking about hanging up the phone without acknowledging that Laito was even still on the other end of the line but then something mischievous had sparked inside of me. I didn't want to be so childish but it would only be fair with how Laito has treated me since day one. He needs to know that he isn't the only one that can get under one's skin.
"I'm sure that they're gonna be absolutely perfect...Yusuke~."
I made sure to stress Yusuke's name as adoringly as possible. Of course Laito shouldn't be bothered by any of this, but what's the harm in trying. Also, was I trying to make him jealous? No. Not at all. I just wanted to prove something to him. Prove what? That I can be just as teasing as him or to show him...something else?
I didn't know what kind of reaction I was expecting from him, but when he let out a giggle then an outright gut clutching laugh, I jumped a bit. Right before I finally decided to hang up, Laito's maniacal laughter had came to a halt. For a split second, there was this dead like silence on both of our ends until he ended it with an unsettling tone.
"I can't wait to see you at school Hiyori."
Not knowing what else to do, I said goodbye to "Yui" and tossed my phone on the counter. I was a bit uneasy after his random laughing fit and erie message he left me before I hung up but I wasn't gonna let that deter my time with Yusuke right now. I can't think about him right now, even though he's just made that crazy difficult.
Taking notice of my demeanor, Yusuke stopped what he was doing and looked in my direction.
"Everything alright Hiyori?"
"Yeah sure. Yui was just letting me know that she forgot to give me my notebook back."
Even if it was a little white lie, I still felt bad for lying to Yusuke and in general. But its not like I could tell him that Laito Sakamaki has my phone number and contacts me occasionally.
Not wanting to comment on it further, Yusuke got back to what little he was doing in the kitchen.
"Well lets finish this up before school. The steak needs at least forty more minutes before its done."
"Okay. All I have to do is mix up the salad and look for a good baking pan for the tart."
After looking for what felt like forever, I finally found a good pan but...
"Looks like I'm gonna have to make individual tarts. Which isn't that bad, because that'll make it easier for you to take some home. I think it'll only be right for you and your mother to taste the fruits of your labor."
"No pun intended?"
It took me a second before I realized the unintentional pun I had made and I laughed.
"Yusuke you're such a dork."
"But you like that side of me."
Pretending to think of an answer, I tapped my foot. "Hmm, I suppose I do."
After getting one more good laugh out of our systems, we were on our way of finishing up our progress. The steak was done, the salad was nicely put in a bowl and the tarts were all plated and set on the table. I put a few tarts off to the side so that Yusuke can take them home for himself and his Mother to enjoy. After cleaning up together, Yusuke got his share of tarts and was getting ready to leave.
"I feel like saying thank you and paying you in tarts just isn't enough Yusuke."
He put up his hand and shook his head. "Trust me, its plenty of a payment for me. I did say I wanted to try your cooking, I'll get the chance."
A sudden thought had crossed my mind. I was hoping my offer wouldn't sound too intimate but it was worth a shot. Nervously shifting my feet, I readied my words.
"Well um...how about...I don't know, maybe next time...I'll make you a lunch or something? You're back in school, so it'll be a good chance to try a nice lunch made by yours truly."
I walked Yusuke to the door and he gave a friendly nod.
"I would love nothing more."
A relieved exhale left my body and I couldn't help but grin.
"Great! I mean, I'm glad. Any special requests?"
"Surprise me. Well, I'll see you at school."
Just when he was about to head out the door, he stopped and turned around.
"Wait, did you want to walk to school together?"
Without thinking about it, I quickly agreed.
"Yeah sure. See you soon."
Waving to each other, I watched Yusuke make his way out the door then out the yard. It really was always fun with him around. I couldn't help but feel myself squeal on the inside. He was truly a great guy.
Now I have to get my school clothes out and rest until Dad gets home. He's gonna get here before I leave for school, so I'll have time to eat with him and ask him about how it was working alongside his boss. Speaking of his boss, Dad doesn't know that I know who he works for. Now will be a great time to ask and pretend to be surprised as he tells me that he works for Tougo Sakamaki. I remember almost giving it away that I knew when he called me while I was at the manor. I mean how would I had explained that? Straight up tell him that I knew who his boss was because I met his boss in his home in which I spent the night in? Goodness no.
I'll bring it up kinda off topically tonight.
Once I was done getting my uniform laid out on my bed, I went to the dining area and set up the table. Our plates, the salad and the dessert. The tarts looked amazing, I was almost tempted to eat one ahead of time. I thought about getting dressed for school first then eating but then again, I wouldn't want to get anything on my uniform just a couple hours before school, so I settled for what I had on.
As soon as I was done washing my hands and getting out something for us to drink, I heard the door and felt myself get excited. Without just barely letting himself in, I all but tackled him in a hug.
"W-whoa Hiyori!"
"Dad!"
Not bothering to question my over affection, Dad simply hugged me back tighter.
"Hiyori I wasn't gonna be gone forever."
I pulled away from him, finally allowing him to come all the way inside and get more comfortable.
"I know, its just...I'm glad you're home."
We both got out of the entrance way and made our way further inside.
Dad's head tilted up and he inhaled deeply.
"Hiyori that smells amazing, what did you cook?"
I took Dad's bags and dragged them into the living room. I proudly gestured towards the table.
"Well Yusuke and I made steak."
"Steak?" Dad exclaimed in a surprised tone.
"I know, I've never cooked steak before but that's where Yusuke came in. I did the salad and dessert."
Dad came in and looked at the table. He almost drooled when his eyes landed on the plates. It was a well cooked juicy steak, with delicious gravy sauce drizzled over it with freshly steamed vegetables on the side and a nice bowl of crispy salad in the middle. The tarts sat along side of the salad on a nice looking plate. I could truly say that I felt well deserved to give myself a pat on the back. Well Yusuke and I a pat on the back.
"For a first time, you did more than well sweetheart. It looks amazing. I can't remember the last time you've cooked this well for me."
Dad gave me a light rub on my head and smiled.
"Well I'm glad you love it. You work so hard for me, its only right to do this kind of thing for you Dad."
"Thank you Hiyori. When you do stuff like this, you really remind me so much of your mother."
That's right. Mom...
I needed to talk to him about Mom and quite a whole lot of things in fact.
"Um Dad, when we sit down and get settled, can we um...talk?"
The look on Dad's face was filled with realization and worry.
"You wanted to talk about something right? Hiyori, is everything okay?"
I so badly just wanted to let it all out and get it off my chest but one look at dinner and then back at my Dad was enough to tell me to hold it off. Just a bit longer until he gets some food in his belly and tells me about his out of town "trip".
I shook my head and smiled.
"Not yet. Let's just...eat first. I'm dying to hear about your trip. Well work trip."
We both got settled at the table, said grace and began digging in. The steak was really well done and tender. The sauce was a great touch as well. I was really proud of the finished product without question. The potatoes and carrots blended perfectly with the meat and made it more delicious than ever. I ate more salad than Dad did since he was more after the berry tarts.
"Dad don't eat them all."
"I can't help it, these are really good. Why haven't you had one yet?"
"Well I wanted to wait until I was done with dinner, like you should've done."
While taking one last bite of his tart, he shrugged.
"I've been done with my dinner."
Finishing up my dinner as quick as I could, I hurried and grabbed me a tart before Dad could eat them all. We both laughed at my eagerness to get a piece of the well made desserts.
"These taste really good Hiyori. Seriously, they had berries this fresh at the grocery store?"
I smiled feeling myself be all proud of Yusuke for getting such a compliment from my Dad.
"Actually, Yusuke grew them. He insisted that I use fresh berries instead of store bought."
Dad took a sip of his drink and nodded.
"Good call he made."
I have to remember to tell Yusuke that Dad loved his fresh produce and that the tarts were a hit. I'd also love to make Yui some one day. I know she likes sweets. After we finished eating, we cleared the table and cleaned the dishes.
"Hiyori that was absolutely spectacular. Your home cooking really hit the spot."
After I dried the dishes, I then made my way back to the table and sat down.
"I'm glad you liked it."
I watched as Dad dried his hands and made his way over to me. He saw me fidgeting in my seat a bit and took a seat across from me. I wasn't sure how I was gonna start this topic, so I decided to ask him about work.
"Sooo...how was working out of town like?"
Dad appeared a bit disappointed that I didn't want to talk about what was on my mind yet but settled for what was brought up.
"It was alright. Not stressful and if anything it almost felt like a vacation that I was getting paid for."
I wanted to try and inch him into revealing that his boss was Tougo Sakamaki bit by bit.
"Your boss isn't strict with you?"
Dad gave a nonchalant gesture.
"He's not strict. He's fair and firm but even he knows that work isn't always work I suppose."
So Mr. Sakamaki isn't a strict boss. That actually surprises me. He seems like a perfectionist of a man that wouldn't settle for anything less than perfect.
"I usually never ask, but what is it you actually do for your boss? I mean, he isn't strict but firm. Are you his assistant or something like that?"
Dad's brow frowned at my sudden curiosity at his profession.
"Yeah, I am. Not that I mind telling you, but why the sudden curiosity about my work?"
"Oh I...um..."
A sigh left his lips and he scratched the back of his head.
"Hiyori, are you trying to deflect what you want to discuss?"
To be honest, I wasn't sure. Yes? No?
Either way, I had a motive.
"Well..."
Dad reached across the table and held my twitching hands.
"Hiyori, what's wrong? I've been worried about you."
Oh believe me, I've been more than worried about myself as well. I took a deep breath and decided to reveal what I've been dying to say.
"Remember my um...problem?"
A puzzled expression crossed his face.
"Problem?"
I took another deep breath and licked my suddenly dry lips.
"When I had that strange...abnormality with my body? The...healing thing."
Dad pulled his hands from mine and was full of concern.
"Yes I do."
"And remember when I told you it went away?"
He pulled a face like he knew where this was going. "I do."
"Well it didn't. I lied."
Dad closed his eyes and then nodded knowingly with his arms crossed.
"I kinda assumed that."
"You mean...you knew I was lying?"
He folded his arms.
"Hiyori of course I knew. I understand why you told me it stopped. Because you didn't want me to worry about it right?"
Nodding, I sat back further into my seat.
"Right. Dad you already had a lot on your plate, the last thing you needed to worry about was me and my oddities."
"Hiyori, I never want you to think that you would be the least of my worries. You're my daughter, I love and worry about you naturally. Whatever is wrong, I would love for you to just...come to me."
I knew he was right and felt a bit disappointed in myself for not trusting how he would take it.
"You're right, I'm sorry."
"Now when did you decide to just outright tell me?"
I knew that this was gonna be a sudden change in the subject, but he asked, so I have to be honest. I thought back to what Yui said. She mentioned the fact that there were possibly things I didn't know about her. I was young when she passed away, so I only knew of her as my loving and dear Mother. Yet her as a person I haven't the faintest. What if this whole accelerated healing had something to do with her? I had to know something.
"I started to wonder..."
"Wonder?"
I held eye contact with him in hopes of seeming serious.
"Wonder why? And...how? It never made sense. You've never seen anything like this from your side of the family right?"
The look on my Dad's face showed that he was preparing himself for whatever I was about to ask.
"Right."
"But what about Mom?"
"Your Mother?"
"Yeah. I mean, she died when I was young, so I only remember her as the Mother she was to me. Caring, kind and warm but..."
"Hiyori..."
He went to stop me from wherever I was going but I continued anyways.
"Deep down, I always felt that you both were keeping something from me. Like something was unexplainably off."
Meeting his eyes, I held his gaze trying to find him wavering over my words. He almost couldn't look me in the eye as I confronted him. So was I right? He was keeping something from me. Something about my condition, and something about Mom. But what?
"Dad?"
"Hiyori I..."
"So there is something?"
Dad just sat there with a guilty look on his face. Like he wanted to tell me something. Anything. But nothing came out of his mouth.
I felt myself getting a bit upset.
"Why can't you tell me? Do you think I won't be able to handle whatever it is?"
He shook his head in disbelief that I would think that.
"No, of course that's not it."
I couldn't help but frown a bit.
"Then why are you hesitating? Does Mom have something to do with what's going on with me?"
Dad raised both of his hands in an attempt to calm me down.
"Try to relax sweetheart, I want to tell you. To explain to you what I know."
Seeing as how Dad was clearly nervous about telling me about whatever he and Mom was hiding from me, I thought to be considerate. I figured it be better not only for him but for me as well, to be let known about whatever this is that is going on and to take it one step at a time.
"Dad, I'm ready for whatever you have to reveal to me. Just...just say what you feel you can only get out at the moment. Then maybe later, you can tell me more and more bit by bit. I'll be patient."
Taking a deep breath, Dad exhaled and nodded with a smile on his face.
"Now I want you to know something, your Mother, my lovely Ayaka, was an amazing woman. She loved you and wanted nothing more than to protect you, even if it meant hiding a few things."
I nervously swallowed moistening my suddenly dry throat. Dad noticed how uneasy I had sudden became but looked as if he knew he had to get it off his chest anyways.
"To start it off easy, yes. You do indeed get your "condition" from her."
I was about to blurt out another question but he put up a hand to stop me.
"Bit by bit remember?"
Nodding, I allowed Dad to continue.
"Now I can't exactly explain it word for word, because it was so long ago. You remember when I told you that I saved your Mom?"
"Yeah."
Genjiro sighed feeling himself think back to when he saved his wife.
"Well there's a bit more to the story. Ayaka was indeed very injured. I don't know what happened for her to be put in that situation, but she was being chased."
Genjiro had just gotten off work and was so exhausted he thought his legs would give out from under him. He was actually considering looking for a better paying job but knew it wouldn't be easy. He was fortunate to get his current job. It wasn't difficult but maybe that's why it paid so little. He couldn't help but rub his tired eyes and groan aloud.
"Well at least its not raining."
The street was empty, dark and the only things that he could hear was the flickering street lights and rustling in nearby garbage cans. The sky was clear and the moon was full. Pretty nice night. He couldn't wait to get to his small but affordable apartment and fall flat onto his futon. As he got closer to his home, there was a sudden scream that echoed throughout the street he was on. The scream clearly came from a woman that sounded as if she was in distress. Distress would be an understatement. The scream was that of...agony and pain.
Stopping dead in his tracks, Genjiro followed the sound of the screaming by looking left and right. Trying to pinpoint exactly where it was coming from. Finding the direction and without hesitation, he ended up running until he got closer and closer to the wailing of the likely victim.
"No! Leave me alone!"
At the sound of her voice, urged Genjiro to run faster. Finally turning a corner, he came face to face with the crying and clearly injured woman. She was found on the ground but was sitting up. The dress she was wearing was torn in almost every which of a way and her hair was frizzy as if she has been sweating profusely. She was holding her arm, tears wet her entire face and her forehead bared a furious frown. She also had a light gash across her cheek, but even though it wasn't as big, it appeared to be bleeding quite heavily. After taking note of the woman's condition, Genjiro saw that she wasn't alone. She was surrounded by three...dogs? Very big dogs. No not dogs, wolves!? What in the world were wolves doing in this area?
Not sure of what else to do, Genjiro not so courageously approached the clearly deadly situation. With the only thing in his possession being his suitcase and tonight's dinner, he decided to use one of said items as a possible weapon to hopefully scare them off.
Raising his suitcase first, he began to shout.
"Get outta here! Shoo!"
They didn't budge one bit, so then he decided to get closer while waving his suitcase at the intimidating trio.
"I said get outta here!"
Yelling at the top of his lungs and swinging the suitcase in a threatening fashion, Genjiro began to see some kind of progress when two of the three began to back away from him the closer he got. The one that didn't back away, stood its ground while holding Genjiro's glare.
With one loud stomp of his foot and one feint of a charge with his suitcase in hand, the wolves had finally all backed off and ran in the opposite direction. One of the wolves however stopped and turned back around to look at the injured woman, but one unfazed look from her, and the wolf went on it's way.
Once the coast was clear, Genjiro stepped closer to the woman and bent down to her level.
"Are you okay?"
She said nothing but held her arm closer to her chest.
"You need to get to a hospital. Can you stand?"
The woman nodded and carefully tried to stand but stumbled right back down to the ground.
Genjiro immediately went to reach out to help her but the woman moved away from him. She couldn't help but wince as she tried to distance herself from him. Even though she clearly didn't want to be touched, that didn't lessen his concern for her.
"Careful, if you can't stand then fine I'll help you."
He cautiously went to reach for her again but she lashed out at him.
"Just leave me be!"
Her tone caught him by surprise and he gave her some space.
"Okay fine I won't touch you, but I at least need to get you some help. I can't just leave you here like this."
"And why not?"
"Well, because its not right. I did all that to scare them off, the least I can do is get you properly taken care of."
"...Just leave me here. I swear I'll be fine on my own."
There was no kind of compromise with this woman. She was serious about not accepting any help from him and wanting him to leave her here. She was very stubborn, headstrong and very mistrusting and yet...
Without giving her a warning, Genjiro came closer and bent down to put his arms underneath her legs. Scooping her up, he was met with an angry glare.
"What on earth do you think you're doing? Let go of me!"
She began wiggling in his hold trying to get him to drop her but with one snug hold on her, the woman gave up her brief struggle. Not saying a single word, Genjiro began walking with her in tow. He managed to grab his suitcase but wasn't able to save his dinner which was now splat on the ground. That was fine though. He was sure he had something to whip up at home. For not only himself, but his feisty injured guest.
Noticing that the woman had calmed down in his arms, he sighed.
"Finally relaxed?"
She stubbornly looked away from him.
"No, because I told you to leave me there. I would've been fine."
"By all means, do explain how you would've been alright?"
She opened her mouth to say something but nothing came. She knew she would've probably died had the man not came to her aid but then again, would dying had been so bad? Perhaps for the best.
"That was stupid of you. You could've gotten killed trying to save me like that."
"Oh believe me, I know. Fortunately though, it worked. Wasn't a foolproof plan but then again, it was a barely a plan at all."
The woman couldn't contain her small smile at the man's comment. She was actually surprised at herself and quickly got rid of her smile.
"You smiled? Maybe you were right. You are fine."
Genjiro had finally made it home. It was late, he was hungry, and he had brought a woman home. Not in that way anyways. She was really hurt but didn't want to go to a hospital, so he was stuck with treating her as well as he could at home.
Slowly but carefully, he made his way up the stairs to his apartment.
"I'm gonna have to put you down so I can open the door."
She nodded understandingly and allowed herself to lean against the nearest wall. Once he got the door opened, he went to reach for the woman but not before asking her this time.
"Would you like me to carry you inside or would you prefer to lean on my shoulder?"
She laid her hand flat on the wall and stood as straight as she could.
"Giving me a choice this time?"
"I think that's better considering what happened not too long ago."
The woman nodded and shrugged.
"I'll take your shoulder."
Putting most of her weight on the helpful man's shoulder, they both made their way inside. It was quiet, small and had a slight smell of...something in the air. But other than that, it appeared cozy enough.
Genjiro helped move the woman to the table where she sat down on one of the pillow like mats. After sitting her down, he quickly went into his small kitchen to get her a glass of water.
"Its nothing special, but it'll be refreshing."
She took the glass and with a nod of thanks, she gulped down the water.
Genjiro watched as the woman was looking at him. He could tell she wanted to say something but wasn't sure if she could get it out.
She placed the glass on the table and sighed.
"I...I didn't mean to be so...riled up. You only wanted to help me and I behaved like a rotten child."
"Its fine, the most important thing is that you're okay. Now I would ask why you were surrounded by wolves but I think you don't have the energy to discuss that right now. So if you wouldn't mind, may I ask your name?"
The woman seemed to be in deep thought for a moment until she finally looked at him.
"Its...Ayaka."
"Ayaka...?"
"I don't...have a last name."
"Okay...well um...as long as you have something for me to call you, I see no issue."
So her name was Ayaka. No last name, found in an odd situation and wasn't much of a talker, but she was indescribable. Everything about her was mysterious and he couldn't help but want to know more about her.
Genjiro went into one of his drawers and took out an aid kit.
"Okay what other places are you hurt?"
"Oh I'll do it. I wouldn't want to trouble you further."
Thinking she might not have wanted a stranger of a man to get that close to her, he nodded.
"Ah, I understand. I'll step out while you get yourself in order. I left out some clothes for you. They're big but comfortable."
"Wait I didn't ask you your name. What is it?"
Giving her a smile and a nod of his head, he introduced himself.
"Genjiro Yamaguchi. Pleased to me you."
With that, Genjiro stepped outside so that Ayaka could get herself together.
While he was gone, Ayaka couldn't help but look around further at the condition of the man's living space.
It wasn't anything special, but it was cozy and warm. That's all that mattered anyways. She didn't need to live in anything lavish or extravagant to feel at ease. Besides, this could be what she needed right now.
She looked at her arm which had one of the wolves fang marks on it and winced at how bad it looked in the light. She opened up the first aid kit and got out some antiseptic and bandages. She had to at least pretend to treat herself, otherwise Genjiro's generosity would have appeared to had gone to waste.
Slowly but surely, her wound had begun to close until it showed no signs of an injury. The gash on her cheek took a while to heal considering that one of the wolves that scratched her, had some kind of poison within its claws. With enough concentration, she was able to heal it up just fine, minus a faint sting of pain that still lingered.
Once she was done "tending" to her wounds, she wrapped up her arm and placed a bandage on her face. She had to appear treated, otherwise how would she explain that her wounds were gone within a short amount of time. She stood up on shakey legs and got the clothes the man left out for her. It was a huge white button shirt and some baggy sweatpants. She was quick to strip off her mutilated dress and toss it in a nearby corner.
After she got dressed, she began to look around more. She saw that he had pictures on his wall and went to inspect it. There was one that had the man in it with two people along side him. She assumed it was his parents. There were also a lot of pictures of him winning awards of some sort. Sports and what seemed to be some academic contests. So he was academically inclined and well trained in certain sports.
As she was looking at his pictures, she heard the door open.
"Ms. Ayaka...? Are you presentable?"
"I believe so."
Genjiro took one look at her and couldn't contain his small chuckle. Ayaka suddenly felt embarrassed and frowned.
Ayaka waved her arms, causing the loose sleeves to flop.
"I really don't see what's so hilarious. Obviously I can't fit in these."
"I'm sorry, I just wasn't expecting them to look so...adorable on you."
Ayaka's face turned red a bit and she practically hissed at him.
"Adorable? That's not something you call a woman. A child maybe, but not a full grown woman."
Genjiro put up his hands defensively. "You're right, I'm sorry but I meant no harm in saying it. So, are you hungry?"
"...No." Soon after that short word left her mouth, her stomach growled something serious.
Genjiro was gonna comment but decided against it as soon as he was greeted with a glare. Instead, he went straight into the kitchen to make something for the both of them.
He found some beef ramen noodles and decided to make some tea to along with it.
As he was in the kitchen making them both something to eat, he couldn't help but take a few glances her way. She was walking picture to picture that sat either on the dresser or was plastered on the wall. Despite her temper and stubbornness, she was actually quite beautiful. The way her eyes gleamed as she glared daggers at him, not only was her hair soft, but it was a gorgeous brown that went perfectly with her skin. Speaking of her skin, he couldn't believe the tone. Was she not Japanese? Perhaps she was mixed.
She must've noticed him staring because she turned her attention away from the photos and towards him.
"Why are you staring at me?"
Genjiro, a bit flustered that he'd been caught, stuttered over his words a tiny bit.
"Oh I just...you know. You're really beautiful is all."
Ayaka felt a small tingle in her chest at the man's honesty but pushed the feeling away.
"Beautiful? Oh I see, are you hoping for some kind of compensation for your hospitality?"
Her accusation caused him to sputter.
"Excuse me?"
She folded her arms.
"You heard me. What's your real goal for helping me? Did you want something in return?"
Genjiro stopped what he was doing and walked out of the kitchen.
"Ayaka..."
Without even letting him finish, she scoffed at him.
"I knew it. I shouldn't have allowed you to bring me here. I'm leaving, I can't be here. For all I know, you're probably trying to hurt me too."
Ayaka went to the door and put her hand on the knob to let herself out that is until Genjiro reached out and grabbed her hand stopping her in her tracks.
"Ayaka wait!"
She snatched her arm out of his hold.
"Why? Why are you helping me? Why haven't you called for help?"
"Because you didn't want me to do that."
"Why did you bring me here?"
"Because it was safer than leaving you outside at night."
Ayaka was staring at him intently as if she was desperately trying to find an opening in each of his responses.
"Why are you being so honest with me?"
Genjiro chuckled while scratching the back of his head. "Well for one, I'm a terrible liar."
He then reached his hand out.
"Also, something is telling me that you need someone honest in your life right now. Listen, if you truly want to leave, I will let you but at least stay the night. I would hate for you to be out and about in the middle of the night."
She tried so hard to find a loop hole with this man but nothing. No foul aura, no ill intentions, and not a single lie has left his mouth. Next thing you knew without even realizing it, Ayaka reached out and gripped Genjiro's hand. It was odd. She felt something with this man that she didn't feel with...him. There was no explaining it, but she knew that had to stay here with him. At least maybe until she's finally safe to go out on her own.
Days turned into weeks, weeks turned into months and eventually those months turned into a year. Ayaka had been staying with Genjiro for a long while now and he hasn't once asked her when she'd be leaving. Maybe because he's gotten so use to her company, that he won't even bother. Even though she thinks that, a part of her doesn't want him to ask. She feels safe but she didn't know why.
Genjiro wasn't a strong man, but was courageous. Wasn't well off yet he seemed to live life as if he was the wealthiest man in the world. How was he so happy when he had so little? How come he was able to give her so much yet at the same time have plenty left over? There was no comparing Genjiro to him but she couldn't help but do just that. Not as an insult to Genjiro but as a compliment. Genjiro was everything a man should aspire to be. Kind, brave, have morals, honesty and straightforwardness.
All while she was staying with him, they had many moments of fun. Something she didn't think she'd be fully capable of doing anymore. He occasionally took her out to dinner and even introduced her to his neighbors. Things were lively and bright all over again. Although she still couldn't help but worry and sometimes check over her shoulder. Looking to see if that wretched man had sent anyone else after her but it appears that he had given up. Either that, or he's waiting for the appropriate time to strike yet again. Hopefully he won't send wolves next time.
Genjiro and Ayaka had been out shopping for a few groceries. After shopping for what they were able to carry, they went to rest in a park at a nearby bench. After they both sat their bags down, Genjiro had caught sight of a crepe cart.
"Ayaka, would you like a crepe?"
She took a look at the cart and couldn't help but take a long whiff.
"Should we be eating something so sweet before dinner?"
"Its alright, we won't get a huge one. What kind do you want?"
"Um...would they have strawberry?"
Genjiro nodded.
"I'm sure they do. Its usually a popular flavor. I'll be back, you can rest here."
Ayaka watched him jog over to the cart to stand in line. He was always so quick to consider her and was also quick to please her. In every which of a way to make her smile. She appreciated that from him and tried to return his kindness in kind. She eventually began having hot cooked meals for him whenever he came back from work. Everytime he saw what she made, he would lit up like it was something special. Her heart couldn't help but feel warm and full to see him so grateful and happy at her cooking.
Ayaka placed her hand over her chest and sighed.
"How could I feel this way in such a short time? It doesn't make any sense."
She stood up from the bench, leaving the bags there and took a walk. She wasn't planning on going too far, but she wanted to go as far as she could to see how long it would take Genjiro to notice. She didn't get pretty far, because the minute she got a decent distance away, Genjiro was already right behind her calling her name.
So he had caught up to her.
She hadn't tried to runaway or anything but she found herself wanting to occasionally wander off just to see how long it would take him to notice that she was gone. Not surprising enough, he noticed immediately.
"I'm sorry, I just...saw a pretty bird just now."
Something told Genjiro that she didn't wander off because of a bird, but something else. Of course though, not wanting to get into it, he didn't press into it any further.
"Then remind me to bring a camera. That way we can take as many pictures as you want."
She smiled at him warmly and then approached him.
"Let's go back and sit, I carelessly left our bags unintended."
They made their way back to the bench and sat down. Genjiro handed Ayaka her crepe and they began eating bit by bit. They both sat quiet for a while until Genjiro broke the silence.
"So um Ayaka, you've been living with me for almost a year now. So I've been wondering..."
Ayaka felt her heart constrict. She couldn't help but worry that he was gonna ask her when she was gonna leave. Even though she was uneasy down to her bones, she chose to stay quiet and let him continue on.
She watched as he struggled with his words. Seeing this made her pay him close attention. He usually just says what's on his mind without hesitation but now...
"I've been thinking...why not just... begin living with me...permanently."
The surprise on Ayaka's face was apparent.
"What...?"
Genjiro sat his crepe down and took her hands in his.
"I'm saying I want you to live with me. For good."
Ayaka thought she was gonna pass out at his bold suggestion.
"Genjiro...as kind as that is, I'm afraid that would be far from decent."
Just what on earth was she saying? This isn't what she wanted to say to him.
"I'm just some poor woman you rescued and besides isn't that only alright if a man and woman are...together? Married even."
He squeezed her hands affectionately.
"Ayaka..."
Pulling her hands out of his, she got up from her seat while dropping her crepe and shook her head.
"No. I can't. I've already been a burden on you. You almost died for me, you've spent your hard earned money on me all the while I've been here and now you're asking me to live with you. Genjiro, I have no job, no background of any kind. I'm just a ghost of a woman for all you know. I don't even...I don't even have a last name."
While Ayaka's back was turned, Genjiro reached into his pocket and pulled out a small box. He then got on one knee.
"Then...share mine."
Confused by his brief response, Ayaka turned around only to find herself speechless.
"Genjiro..."
She could only whisper his name as she stared at the small opened box.
He took a deep breath and spoke.
"Ayaka, our time together hasn't been long, but it sure has felt like an endless journey with you. You may have a difficult way in showing it, but you're kind, patient, considerate, and warm. So very warm. I never thought I'd be so eager to head home and walk through my door. Night after night a nice good meal, a kind welcome and your smile. Your lovely smile. I'm only now so happy to head home, because I know you're there waiting for me. To put it simply, I've fallen in love with you and would love for you to be wife."
She couldn't speak. She was too afraid to. The one thing that frightened her, was that the word "yes" sat at the tip of her tongue. She couldn't believe it. She wanted to say yes. Why? Was it because she trusted him? Because she knew he would love her to no end? Because she loved him too? How? In such a short time she was able to have such feelings for this man yet with...him. She almost could barely stomach him in the many years shes known him. But Genjiro wasn't that cruel man, Genjiro wasn't like him in the least and that thought alone was making her more tempted to say yes to him.
Genjiro watched as Ayaka stood still staring at him as held open the box revealing a small sized. He then got up and walked up to her. Before he could say anything, Ayaka reached out and placed her hand on his cheek.
"Genjiro, you've been so good to me. Truth be told, I want to say yes, but I feel that you would need to know more about me in order for me to give you my final and sincere answer."
He laid his hand over hers and nodded.
"I understand."
She could feel her heart racing in fear. Fear that once she tells him everything, that he will want nothing to do with her. He'd see her as some kind of trouble and want to separate himself from her as quick as possible to protect himself.
"We have to go back. I'd feel better if we discussed this behind closed doors."
Nodding in agreement, Genjiro and Ayaka began making their way back home. It was a somewhat quiet walk back but there would be an occasional glance in between the two and a smile. Ayaka was nervous and Genjiro was full of suspense. Just what could she be hiding. Whatever it was, Genjiro wouldn't think anything until he hears what she has to say from her mouth.
After making it home, Genjiro allowed Ayaka to head in first while he grabbed her something to drink. He told her to sit while he put up the groceries, so she sat down at the table and folded her hands in front of her. She watched as Genjiro walked his way over to her and handed her the glass.
"Thank you."
"Ayaka, first and foremost I want you to know, that you don't have to tell me everything right now at this moment if you don't feel like it."
She shook her head.
"I can't hide it all. If I'm going to be bound to you, be with you, you need to know everything. The good, bad and ugly. Yet at the same time, I don't want to scare you away."
"Never."
His solid and serious answer brought a small smile to her lips. Taking a deep breath, she began to tell him. Everything. From the very beginning all the way up until now. As she spoke, Genjiro's reaction wasn't one she expected but didn't expect. He was taking it all in somewhat pretty well. There were parts where he seemed skeptical, but then he would nod in an understanding way and gently urge her to continue.
She began by telling him about the man that saved her one night. A tall and mysterious handsome man named Karl Heinz. Her people and her family had been slaughtered by beings that were truly from hell and pure evil.
Vampires.
They killed them all in hopes of gaining more and better profound power. Because of what they were, Vampires saw them as a delicacy. Faeries.
Her kind had been sought out for many years, until one night there were some vampires that managed to track them down. There was a forest that was protected by powerful magic. No one would be able to even accidentally stumble upon it. Unfortunately, someone did. Someone managed to have enough power to not only track her people down, but to remove the magic that was protecting her people in the first place.
It was all over so fast but it felt like the entire disaster was on a loop. The screams, the damage and the blood. So much blood.
Genjiro reached out and placed his hands over hers.
"You don't have to continue, you can stop..."
Even though he suggested that she stop, she still wanted to continue. Not only was she doing this for him, but herself.
She continued on to tell him that her Mother was able to sneak her away amongst all the chaos. Ayaka had been one of the only true chosen one of the Faeries. She was born to give life and take life. Each Faerie was able to be born with the ability of either or, but Ayaka was "blessed" with both. At least that's what the elders would tell her and her family. Her Mother told her if a vampire were to drain her of her essence completely, they would have endless amount of ungodly power. Ayaka used fear as her motivation and ran as fast and far as she could. She managed to get away far but not far enough for her not to hear her Mother's horrified screams as Vampires all but killed her. All she could do was continue forward not looking back.
"Is that when you ran into this Karl person?"
Ayaka nodded. She told Genjiro that Karl was the first friendly face she saw as soon as she managed to escape the carnage. He quickly took her in and treated her as he would if he had been courting a woman.
She sighed.
"Long story short, I found out he was planning on using me for something sinister and that he was responsible for the Faeries location being exposed. All of it was his fault and I was fooled."
Genjiro shook his head.
"You were no fool. You were scared and let your fear carry you. You sought out help because you were in danger."
Ayaka's face was sullen .
"Little did I know, I ran straight into even more dangerous territory."
Then something dawned on Genjiro. "Wait a minute, those wolves that were attacking you that night..."
"Karl sent them after me once I ran away. I didn't want to leave because of...but I couldn't take it anymore. He was a vile man."
Ayaka stopped mid sentence after realizing her face was drenched in tears. Its been years since she's thought about the Faeries' downfall at the hands of those evil beings.
She wiped at her face.
"You have to excuse me, I suppose its been on my chest for so long, that it just erupted. Its been so long since that tragedy, yet it still feels as if it only happened yesterday."
He reached in his pocket and got out a handkerchief handing it to her. "Ayaka, you have every right to lean on me. For any and everything. You won't have to carry that weight on your own anymore. I'll carry it with you."
She patted her face and stared at him lovingly. "Genjiro..."
"I love you. I'll accept you as you are and share everything with you. You're not alone anymore."
Without even realizing what she was doing, she got up from her seat and sat down next to him.
"You'll take me as I am?"
He nodded. "I will."
"You'll be in danger."
He smiled. "Then so be it."
She scoffed and shook her head.
"Genjiro, you're so rash."
"Yes, I know I'm foolish."
Not wanting to wait a second longer, Ayaka wrapped her arms around his neck and brought him close, kissing him. This caught him by surprise but he then just melted into it. Ayaka was unique and...inhuman, but that's not all she was.
Once they separated, they both couldn't contain their smiles.
"So is that a yes to my proposal?"
She nodded and all but happily tackled him to the floor.
"It most surely is a yes Genjiro."
Before she could kiss him again, Genjiro couldn't help but ask.
"Ayaka, you spoke as if you were older than you looked, just how old are you?"
Ayaka's mouth stretched into a sly like smile.
"Never ask a woman her age."
Clearly not satisfied with her response, Genjiro huffed.
"Will you ever tell me?"
She let out a long contemplating hum.
"One day, now hush and kiss me you reckless man."
They stayed in each others arms the whole night never letting go.
I sat there and tried multiple times to keep my jaw from dropping. So my Mother did have secrets. I just didn't think it would be something so otherworldly. As I sat there taking in all of what I was just told, Dad waited on me to speak.
"What you're saying is, that I'm not...human?"
He nodded once while shrugging. "You're...half and half."
"Mom was a...Faerie?"
Dad was looking at me waiting for anything curious to come flying out my mouth but held his hand up.
"Look I know this is all a lot to take in and I know that you'll have a hard time believing anything, but Hiyori I promise you its the truth. Turns out there is much more than just humans out there."
I sat back in my seat and sighed.
"Dad I...think I have a lot to absorb right now."
Sighing, Dad nodded.
"...I understand."
Standing up from the table, I went towards my room while trying not to fall over due to everything I was trying to process. I closed my door and started to busy myself with getting ready for school. I couldn't help but feel myself getting riled up. Every time I tried to put on a piece of clothing, I'd mess it up. When I tried to brush my hair, the brush would somehow get tangled up.
It was so much. Too much. Not only did Vampires exist, but so did Faeries. And apparently I myself is a fairy. Well I'm a half breed but nonetheless, a mythical beings blood runs through my veins. Wait a minute, does that mean that I'm the only faerie that exists? No way. No that can't be. Surely somewhere there is another. I began to feel myself panic and I held my chest while sitting down on my bed.
I even felt a bit hot, like my blood was almost boiling.
Speaking of blood, something just hit me. My blood. Why Laito and his brothers kept making odd comments on my blood. They're not tasting human blood, they're tasting faerie blood. I dropped the hair brush and laid down on my bed with a plop. My heart began racing in fear now. Thinking back to what Dad told me what happened to Mom and the other Faeries, I knew right then and there that I was in even more danger than I am currently. Well maybe not. I mean, they don't know that I'm part faerie and they haven't seemed like bloodthirsty monsters. Well not totally bloodthirsty, otherwise I would've been dead by now.
As I sat on my bed contemplating my entire dire situation, I heard Dad's footsteps in the hallway. I was expecting him to come knocking on my door, insisting on talking more or to see how I was doing but he never came. I instead heard him walk past my door and to his room with the click of his door closing.
"So much for a happy welcoming dinner."
I groaned as I got up from my bed and towards the clothes that ended up the floor. Bending down to pick them up, I couldn't help but consider not going to school tonight.
Shaking that thought from my head, I proceeded to put my uniform on. Which felt like forever since I was taking my sweet time. Besides, Yusuke and I were walking to school for the first time, and I'm not gonna miss it because of my personal problems.
After I was done getting ready for school, I made sure I had everything in my bag. As soon as I was about to pick up my phone, it let out a chime. I flipped it open.
It was Yusuke.
"I'm out front."
I smiled and texted him back.
"Be out in a minute."
I practically ran out my room but then stopped midway. Looking at Dad's room, I found myself walking towards his door and knocking.
"Dad?"
Nothing. He's probably resting, oh well. He knows that I'm gone for school, I'll just have to see him later. He's definitely more worn out than me. To have the courage to tell me everything, even knowing that there would've been a chance that I wouldn't believe him.
I headed to the door and opened to see Yusuke waiting outside the gate. The minute he saw me, his smile grew. It grew even wider as I approached and met him on the other side.
"Yusuke, you're early."
He shyly cleared his throat and looked in another direction.
"Well...I kinda didn't notice the time."
Flattered that he was eager to see me, I couldn't help but link my arm with his. This surprised him but he quickly collected himself and just let it be.
"Next time, I'll meet you at your house early. To make it even."
We both laughed as we walked on our merry way to school. Even though my head was hit hard with the weight of truth, I couldn't let that distract me throughout the rest of the night.
Once Genjiro heard Hiyori leave, he got up from his bed and towards the closet. Opening the door, he reached up and got a hold of a small box. It looked similar to a chest, only smaller. Once he got it, he headed back to the bed and placed it in his lap.
"Ayaka, I finally told her. Not everything but I told her at least enough."
Genjiro placed his fingers on the latch and popped it open with a loud snap.
Opening the lid, he looked inside and saw a chain that had a small amber stone hanging from it. He reached inside and picked it up, keeping the stone in between his thumb and forefinger.
He couldn't help but think back to the night she left. She wouldn't tell him anything, other than she loved both him and Hiyori and that she would return. Days turned to weeks, weeks turned to months, then next thing you knew, year after year was flying by.
Hiyori was older, doing well in school and growing up into a fine person. Such a shame her mother wasn't here to see how wonderful she's turned out.
"Ayaka you would be so proud of our girl. She reminds me of you in so many ways. Headstrong, kind, hardworking and so independent. Even the way her eyes light up whenever she's happy."
Genjiro couldn't contain the tear that built up in his eye and fell down his cheek into the chest.
"There isn't a day that goes by without me missing you. I think I may be getting close to finding out what happened to you. I promise myself and Hiyori, that I'll discover the truth."
