Chapter 17: Nature's balance

There was a great disturbance at the New York harbour, waves were crashing into the warehouses, the tide was in at the beach, much more than it should have been at that time of year. Water began to leak out into the streets, and the people looked towards the sea. They could see a great wave heading towards the city.

Lilith's Halo shined, illuminating the city and the heroes protecting it. Saviour continued to battle with Cap, Iron man and Thor, despite the damage to his armour. And much to his denied frustration, they were still dominating him. They seemed to fight in perfect unison, one attack melding into the other. When Saviour dodged one of Iron man's blasts, Cap deflected that same blast into Saviour's back. Thor slammed his hammer into Saviour's cheek, launching him upwards. Iron man then caught Saviour by his leg and threw him towards the ground. There, Cap shield rammed him, knocking Saviour onto the floor. Thor called down the thunder and brought Saviour down before he could rise.

"Surrender, and stop that giant before it's too late, didn't you hear that voice in your head?" Cap asked.

"Pretty sure all he hears is voices in his head," Iron man commented.

Gary shoulders and knees shook as he stood up, his exposed face a statue of denial and rage.

"I told you, I am the one who will save this world, Lilith will turn this planet into what it must be, it will create the paradise as it is my destiny to create paradise," he summoned the dark tendrils from his back, forming a pair of wings.

From those wings he created projectiles that Iron man dodged and Thor and Cap shielded themselves from. Saviour flew upwards, aiming to attack Danvers. She turned and braced herself, but an energy blast slammed into Saviour's side and knocked him onto the rooftop. The barrel of Optimus's rifle was smoking, and he nodded to Carol. She smiled before turning to Lilith alongside Darkhawk and Iron man.

"I'm going to need bigger armour," Iron man said.

"All right people, let's carry out Cap's plan," Carol said.

She glowed with energy and swooped downwards. Cyclops and Bradley were using their blasts on the ground, dragging the beams they formed across it. Carol joined them and Iron man used both his repulsors.

"The giant's feet are still making contact with the ground, which means she can trip," Cap said.

Beast and Angel were moving people off of the streets, Aeon assisting them. Sven was still in his shinobi form, leading people. Gargoyle flew over him, carrying someone in his arms. Maverick and Stryker both carried children on their shoulders and Captain Ultra carried a car filled with people. Dark portals opened behind them, and the shadow hybrid emerged, he darted through one portal after another as he approached Ultra. Aeon jumped, intercepting the hybrid's blade with his own. He slid across the floor and raised his head just as the shadow hybrid appeared in front of him.

"BACK OFF!" Luke yelled, punching the hybrid in his side.

"We've got your back," Iron Fist bowed his head as he ran to Luke's side.

The shadow hybrid began darting through portals, moving around the two defenders and Aeon. Sven unsheathed his Ninjato and stood at the ready. He followed the hybrid's movements, his eyes in synch with the portals as they appeared. Aeon threw his sword into the air and grabbed the fire element orb. Clapping his hands over the orb, his fingers forming the dragon ninjutsu sign. He swept his hand over one of the portals, flames bursting out of the other ones. The shadow hybrid flew out of the portal closest to Luke and Iron Fist, the former clothes lining him, and the latter delivering a jump kick that knocked him out.

"That's all of Saviour's thralls," Sven said, his armour returning to normal.

He looked up towards the rooftop, seeing Saviour looking down at the fleeing people. Sven ran and jumped onto the wall. His feet made contact with the glass and he began to run up it. Partially fusing with each step, he continued running towards Saviour. But he made a mistake, mistiming one step and falling. It turned out to be a lucky mistake, as Saviour fired a blast just at where Sven fell. Angel grabbed Aeon's hand, nodding at him as they flew up. Warren flew over the rooftop and dropped Sven a few paces from Saviour. Aeon turned and dodged one of the scythe blades Saviour made from his tendrils. Gary formed a drill shape and continually thrust it at Sven, who stepped and rolled back. Aeon kept his fists close to his chest and ducked, the drill grinding against his shoulder. He moved through the drill and slammed his head into Gary's.

"NOW SVEN! Left jab," Faith commanded and Aeon followed with an attack.

"Head butt," he slammed his head again into Gary's.

"Right knee," he followed with a kick.

"Again a head butt," then knocked Gary back with his follow up attack.

"NOW RIGHT CROSS!"

Sven swung his fist wide, slamming it into Gary's face. With that final punch, Gary was thrown to the floor.

"You could spend ages punching the guy, but the right kind of punch can end the fight in seconds, remember that Sven," Faith spoke in his mind.

Aeon nodded his head and looked towards Lilith. The giant was brought to the ground through a combination of Cap's strategy, the last of Spidey's webbing and a cable that Darkhawk fired from his wrist. Aeon's eyes glowed as he looked down at the giant.

"That won't be enough to truly stop it," Yukimura said.

"But there must be a way to stop it for good," Aeon said.

"It would have to take something of incredible power to burn away the giant!"

Sven narrowed his eyes at Lilith, seeing the dark energy that made up its form. And through that darkness, he saw a glowing figure.

"Someone is alive in there, someone to save!"

He stepped onto the ledge, preparing to jump. Suddenly, a tendril grabbed him by the waist. Resembling an anaconda, the tendril squeezed tightly and made Sven gasp for breath. Saviour was on one knee, his hand raised, forming a spear that looked far more heroic than his intention.

"You won't interfere, you are a nobody, weak without others to help you, pathetic. But me, I had confidence from the beginning, a love of this life from the beginning. I've seen the future, I've seen that I will be loved by many, that I will save many!" Gary cackled.

"No Gary," Xavier's voice blared in his mind.

"GET OUT!" Gary yelled. "STAY OUT OF MY HEAD! YOU'RE DESTINED TO LET GO OF THE DREAM WITHOUT MY INTERVENTION!"

He put both his hands to his head as he was bombarded with images.

"You've been shown the universe Gary, the Multiverse itself, but that is not this Earth, not this reality, not the world in front of you. Everything you've been promised, everything you expect to happen is a lie," Charles explained.

"NOT IF I MAKE IT HAPPEN!"

"People will never just love you, the women you expect to share you, are the kind of women whom will bear their hearts for one person alone, their admiration, their care is what you can earn. But what you believe to be admiration is blind worship, what you believe to be trust is obedience to your will, what you see as heroism is dominance!"

Aeon slipped through the tendril, grabbing the ledge as he fell. He pulled himself partially up, watching Lilith rise.

"How is that person still alive inside Lilith?" he asked Gary.

"She acts as the heart, it draws on her strength of character and strong desire to awaken her Inhuman abilities. So long as her heart beats, then Lilith will continue to exist in this form," Gary explained.

"So it is possible to pull her out of Lilith?" Charles asked, speaking through both Gary and Sven's minds.

"Oh Charles, if you were to read her mind, then you'll know she's far from worth saving, this is what will save her, will purify her," Gary said.

"That isn't how saving someone should work," Aeon retorted.

He pushed his feet against the ledge, and then he let go and launched himself towards Lilith.

"YOU FOOL!" Gary lashed out with his tendrils, only for Charles to again partially control his body.

The markings across Aeon's armour glowed intensively as he slammed into the surface of Lilith's body. He seeped into her skin, seemingly disappearing. Gary laughed, fighting Charles's control and flailing his arms about. Black markings appeared across his skin and his head bulged and belly partially expanded for a moment.

"Pathetic, pathetic, absolutely pathetic, I can't be stopped, I am the Saviour, the victor, THE HERO!" he yelled.

"But there's more than just heroes in this world Gary," Charles said.

"What on Earth are you talking about?" Gary demanded.

Gary looked over the edge of the building, water had filled some of the streets. Cap pulled a civilian into one of the buildings, shielding her as a figure stomped past them. The heroes and people they rescued watched the figure walk towards Lilith, water dripping off of its body. Even fish flailed off of its green scales. It had a grand tail, with grey plates running up the tail and along its back. The dragon like creature raised its head, its maw opening and releasing a hellish cry that shook the ground. Gary looked at the creature, gritting his teeth together in frustration. His head expanded for a moment as more information flooded his mind, information that Charles received as well.

"That creature has a name?" Charles asked.

"Yes, he who will restore balance no matter the cost, the king of the monsters, Godzilla!" Gary seethed.

Godzilla roared, rushing Lilith. She grabbed his neck, slamming him against one of the buildings. Godzilla dragged his claw across the roof, slashing Lilith across her face. Shoulder barging her, Godzilla raised his head and then bit into Lilith's neck. He lifted her partially off of the ground, crashing her through one of the buildings beside them. Lilith fired her eye beams, hitting Godzilla in the belly and throwing him through some of the buildings.

"Go on Lilith, go on, destroy that monster whom rampages through helpless cities, KILL HIM!" Gary yelled.

The black markings flashed across Gary's skin. He grimaced in pain, his skin turning pale. An attempt to restore his armour ended only in him falling to his knees and vomiting.

"You need to stop, you're burning through your powers," Cyclops said, Angel dropping him onto the roof.

Beast climbed up too and approached Gary with Scott and Warren.

"Let us help, if you keep this up your internal organs will be converted into the energy to sustain your strength, it isn't worth it Gary," Hank explained.

They were distracted by Godzilla suddenly pouncing at Lilith, slamming one of his legs into her knee. She recovered and grabbed him from behind, wrapping her arm around his neck. Her skin glowed and steam rose from Godzilla's scales.

"We should find shelter before they destroy this entire block," Angel said.

"You three go, I will remain, I am the Saviour, I must see Lilith's evolution through until the bitter end," Gary stated, turning and raising his arms, looking at Lilith grappling with Godzilla.

The king of monsters knocked the first woman back, and then smacked her across the head with his tail. He took a few paces back, blue lights ran across the scales on his tail and gradually up his back. A great humming sound filled the city streets, filling the people hearing it with a dreadful anticipation. Godzilla stomped his foot forward, opened his maw and unleashed a blast of blue fire on Lilith, causing her to scream.

Aeon was swimming, it felt like he was in deep water, trying to go deeper and deeper. It was as if he had armbands on, and couldn't force his way deeper into the water. Something was trying to pull him up, but he persisted, kicking his legs and moving his arms as he had trained. Swimming wasn't his favourite pass time, but it was a good way to get exercise. He went deeper and deeper, towards the shining light at the centre of Lilith. The heart, a great orb of energy. Aeon kept on swimming, the orbs flying around him. He was determined to reach her, the blue markings glowing across his armour. As Sven got closer to the orb, the repelling affect grew worse and he was thrown back. Cracks spread across his armour, his head started to hurt and his arms ached.

'Keep going, keep going, I can do this,' he kept thinking, kept driving himself.

He swam deeper and deeper, pushing his hands against the orb. Faith and Yukimura's orbs flew into his armour, his helmet and chest changed into his ninja garb, and his boots and gauntlets into Faith's close range style. Then came the mammal and sea hybrid orbs, turning his helmet into a mix of a metallic lion's mane and tentacle dreadlocks. The shadow and fire hybrid orbs soon after flew into Aeon's back, and wings of both fire and darkness stretched out of his back.

"I will...save people!" he strengthened his resolve and pushed through, cracking the orb.

WDRA headquarters

Peggy looked at the monitor, the drones floating over New York recorded the battle. The inspiring presence of Captain America, the original Captain America, had driven everyone into a deep silence. Fresh recruits and even officers whom had served with the WDRA worked hesitantly now. Peggy wondered if she was losing control, Coulson hadn't reported back, neither had Agent Garret or Quake. The battle had damaged the city, and a consensus of casualties hadn't been taken yet. But Peggy knew there would be many. She looked at the giant Lilith, and the monster, Godzilla.

"What do we have available on it?" she asked.

"October 27th 1954, a monster briefly attacked the Japanese mainland before it was seemingly destroyed by a weapon that the Japanese government designed, an Oxygen destroyer," one of the agents explained.

"Research was carried out on the monster's bones by a Dr Yuriko Takiguchi, unfortunately he passed away a few years ago. But there was a thesis written by a Dr Eiji Serizawa, his son Ishiro later expanded upon it. The idea was that before the time of the dinosaurs there existed a species of giant creatures. American scientists called them Titans, but the Japanese government settled on Kaiju," another agent explained and Peggy scoffed.

"So many secrets, even the people who are supposed to know everything have things to learn," she said. "This creature, it emits nuclear energy doesn't it?"

"The energy seems to be harming the giant, and Godzilla's strength alone dominates it. But ma'am, if Godzilla destroys the giant, what is to stop it from ravaging the rest of the city?" an agent asked.

"Nothing could stop it, have the military ready to drive the beast back, then get in contact with the Japanese branch and secure the Oxygen destroyer," Peggy explained.

"We won't be able to get it in time," said another of the agents.

"But Serizawa, that's Ishiro, theorised that Godzilla is simply an apex predator, wiping out its competition. More than that even, he theorised that Godzilla would only act and attack when something threatened the fabric of nature!"

"And what threatens nature more than humanity?" Peggy asked.

She looked at the screen again, seeing Godzilla take another blast from the giant.

New York

Lilith fired again and again at Godzilla, driving him back. She rushed forward, grabbing Godzilla by his head and crashing him into one of the buildings. Lilith prepared to fire another blast. But the giant convulsed, blue markings spreading across her skin. Gary looked up at the creature and cursed.

"No, what is that fool doing?" he demanded.

"He's saving someone," Cyclops said.

"Saving? And what of the consequences of saving that life? Not every life is worth saving, I can decide who is worth saving," Gary said.

"Why, because you're the Saviour? What about all of these lives you've ended today?" Spider-man asked, landing behind Gary.

"A lot of people suffered because of this...ritual you've carried out," Iron man said.

He flew up to Gary, Thor jumping up to the building too.

"It is all for the sake of the world, for the world don't you see? Lilith will spread its life throughout all existence, spreading beyond the Earth. Within years, I will have saved everyone," Gary explained.

"Who are you really saving Gary? People are dying right now, it's not too late to change things," Cyclops said.

"None of you X-men have the right to talk about change, you whom are all destined to abandon the beautiful dream your team was founded upon," Gary summoned his tendrils and lashed out at the heroes.

Spider-man flipped back, Cyclops shot one of the tendrils and Iron man flew upwards to avoid their grip. He fired a blast into Gary's back and then Thor threw his hammer, hitting Gary's chest. The dark tendrils shaped into a pair of wings and Gary's armour again darkened.

"None of you understand, none of you, I WILL SAVE YOU ALL!"

A shadow was cast over him and Gary's eyes widened, looking towards Godzilla. The Kaiju swung his tail, knocking Gary and Lilith back.

Sven continued to push against the orb, the energy on his armour making it shine.

"Wake up, let me help! TAKE MY HAND!" he tried to push his hand through, the flames and shadow on his back wavering.

His armour returned to its normal form, but he still tried, still tried to reach the woman within it. Raina's eyes lazily opened and she looked upon the young man trying to save her.

"Go, turn away," she said.

"No, I won't stop trying!"

"Not every life is worth it, I am...evil," Raina whispered.

It compelled her to tell him, compelled her to give in to her fate as the heart of Lilith. Rather than her fate as a monster.

"You won't be a monster because of looking that THAT! You'll be a monster because of the things you do, but you have a chance, to put things right, a second chance like everyone should have. No one deserves to die like THIS!" Aeon crashed his fist through the orb, the energy cracking his armour.

The visor over his eyes partially shattered, exposing his left eye. Dark energy replaced his flesh and the fire and shadow elements left him. He snarled, pulling his head back in pain, the dark energy leaking out of the hole in his armour.

"Every life has value, I haven't given up on any life, EVEN YOURS! ACCEPT IT!" he threw his hand forward, offering it to Raina.

She widened her eyes, seeing the determination in Aeon's glowing eyes. The light shining behind him, made him seem like an angel.

'The angel that I wanted to be,' Raina thought, slowly reaching out to him.

She took hold of his hand, and the blue markings on his armour spread across her body.

"Yes, I will...live," Raina said.

Energy consumed her, turning her into an orb like how Faith and Yukimura had been turned. The Orb flew into Aeon's chest, repairing his armour and making it glow. Aeon closed his eyes, the image of an inhuman Raina appearing before him, her body covered in quills.

"This, this is your power...your heroism," Aeon said.

He crossed his arms together and let the current take him.

Gary looked at Lilith, screaming in frustration and seeing his creation convulse in agony. Lilith's once elegant body began to shrink and return to her base form, a mindless, heartless monster. It roared in agony as a light burst out of its chest.

"YOU!" Gary yelled.

Aeon floated in front of Godzilla, his armour repaired and now bearing quills on his arms and helmet.

"It's over Gary," Aeon said.

Gary swung his tendrils at Aeon. Sven passed the fire element through his quills, stretching the ones on his arms and then slashing through the dark tendrils. Behind him, Godzilla's tail glowed, the nuclear fire sweeping up his back. Gary summoned a double sided sword and yelled as he flew at Sven.

"I WON'T BE DENIED THIS!"

Godzilla fired, just as Aeon punched Gary in the chest. The nuclear fire propelled Aeon forward, taking Gary with him. They flew into the chest of the giant, spreading cracks across its body, until it finally shattered in an explosion of energy. The heroes gathered around Godzilla, watching him carefully.

"It is over, balance has been restored," Thor said.

"I wouldn't count on it, get ready for another fight," Iron man said.

"Nay man of Iron, Godzilla is not our enemy...on this day," the deity of thunder bowed his head slightly.

Godzilla slowly began to turn, and march away from the fighting, march back through the way it came. Then it slowly walked back into the ocean. Faith opened her eyes, finding herself on the floor. Flowers had grown on the ground beneath her, grass had began to form through the cracks on the pavement. She looked towards Yukimura, who was draping a coat over Raina's naked form.

"Sven," Faith whispered.

She looked towards Aeon, his glove had crumbled to pieces, the top part of his helmet had shattered and his knees were shaking.

"Keep back," he said.

A rat like maw suddenly grabbed him by his shoulder and slammed him against the ground. Gary was shirtless, seething as he walked towards Sven. The tendrils coming out of his back shaped into a warm, then a centipede, and then bladed tentacles that lashed out at Sven. Gary's body bulged and he stepped back suddenly, gripping his chest.

"I don't understand," his lips quivered.

"You have burned through the formula you were given Gary," Xavier said, a projection of him appeared in front of Gary.

"Get out of my head Charles, I WILL DESTROY THE VILLAIN!" Gary screamed.

"I am truly sorry for this Gary," Xavier put his hands to his head and focused his power.

The psychic wave struck Gary's head like a beam, throwing him back. His body shook, back and head expanding as his skin shifted into a black mass. It rose high, faces appearing across it, faces that screamed and wept in pain.

"No, NO! NO! NO! IT'S A LIE!" Gary yelled.

"It is not Gary, this, all of this pain, and all of this death was caused by you," Xavier said.

"But it's not too late to change it Gary, you can be saved," Aeon said.

"I don't need to be saved, I was supposed to be the hero! ME!"

The black mass swung at Aeon, only to strike a shield.

"ENOUGH!" Cap yelled.

"Indeed, you have been shown the error of your actions Gary Stewarts, the truth of your delusions, now your power must be stopped in its tracks, with a greater force, the Anti-Force of Mjolnir," Thor held his hammer up to his chest and unleashed a blast on Gary, surrounding him with energy.

His body shrunk back to normal, mass on his back too was disintegrated and as the energy faded, Gary slammed back first into the ground. Stryker walked past the heroes, his team mates stepping either side of Gary.

"This one has proven himself dangerous, he's coming with the MRD and that's final," Stryker said.

"No arguments here Commander," Danvers said.

Cyclops raised his hand, stopping Beast and Angel from getting involved.

"There is no right choice here Scott, Gary unfortunately has done things he cannot take back," Xavier spoke within Cyclops's mind.

Aeon looked down at Gary with pity in his eyes. He sat on the ground, looked up and sighed in relief. Aaron watched the event happen and gasped in awe.

"They did it, they succeeded!"

"It is not over," Uatu said.

"What do you mean?"

"This is just the precursor of the events to come," the Watcher said. "The Age of Marvels has begun!"

Godzilla: Marvel has had publishing rights in the past. His design is based on the recent Godzilla films, though his skin is green based on marvel comic's version. The events of the first Godzilla movie could be considered canon in this universe, with the 'OG Godzilla' being the father of this one.
