Harry wakes up to the sound of burning. He rolls over and Ginny isn't on her side of the bed.
Sniffing the air, Harry figures that if something was really bad, it'd smell worse. Ginny can probably fix whatever it is.
He rolls over and goes back to sleep.
…
When Harry wakes up again, there's still a burning smell in the air, but it's fainter. With a groan, he gets out of bed and slams his glasses onto his face. He doesn't know how long he slept for after going back to sleep, but he should probably check on whatever fire is happening in his apartment. He hopes that it's not too bad and that they can fix it with magic.
When he pads into the kitchen, the sight isn't what he expected at all.
He had expected maybe Ginny to try and iron, like she's done before, or maybe straighten her hair the Muggle way. He hadn't expected to see his girlfriend at the stove, a pan in her hand, and smoke floating up into the air. They had agreed pretty fast that Ginny wasn't to cook the Muggle way — she was terrible at it.
And yet —
"Gin?" Harry asks, walking closer to her. She spins around, still holding the pan, evidently surprised by Harry, and nearly whacks him in the face.
"Yes?" she asks, sounding frazzled. She obviously didn't expect to see him.
"Are you cooking?" he asks, and he doesn't want to laugh at her. He really doesn't, but the corners of his mouth tick up anyway.
"I wanted to make you breakfast for your birthday," she explains, lowering her pan back onto the stove and turning off the fire. "I wanted to do it the Muggle way, so it was more from the heart." Harry smiles. He appreciates the gesture, but he's pretty sure that nothing that Ginny's cooked is edible.
"What did you make?" he asks, peering into the pan. To his surprise, it doesn't look charred that much. It looks like a few pancakes, but there's some reddish bits in them.
"Bacon pancakes," Ginny says, poking one with a spatula.
"Bacon pancakes," Harry deadpans back. He doesn't think they're a thing.
"I tried to make bacon and pancakes," Ginny says, and Harry looks back up to her gesticulating with the spatula, "but I burnt the bacon, but then I found bacon bits, so I figured I would just mix them in."
Harry doesn't think he should tell her that bacon bits are meant to go in salads, not in batter. He's also not sure about how good the sweet pancakes will go with the savory bacon bits. Still, Ginny tried for him. He grins.
He loves them.
