Drew woke up to a shower running down the hall and looked at the clock. It said 5:48am. That was late enough to sleep; especially since Detective Hailey said they needed to leave the house at 7am so he could be dropped off at Ms. Isabetta's house for the day while she and Detective Jay went to work.
He hopped out of bed and hurried downstairs. Detective Jay talked about his PTSD last night and seemed sad; it was only fair that Drew made him breakfast this morning. He pulled a chair over to the cabinet and climbed on top of it to pull out three bowls. He carried them to the kitchen table before going to the pantry to find cereal. Detective Jay likes Cheerios, so that's what he can eat, and Detective Hailey just bought Apple Jacks, so that's what she could eat and Drew didn't mind them either. Drew poured the cereals into the bowls, wincing when some got on the ground.
"It's okay," he whispered and rubbed his arm. He shook his head, "No," and stopped rubbing his arm. Detective Jay said he needs to make positive choices.
Drew sighed and opened the fridge. He carefully grabbed the milk out and carried it to the table. As he poured the milk into the bowls, his hands started shaking and he spilt a good amount on the floor.
"Oh no, oh no," he whispered. He chewed his lip and stared at the dripping milk. Drew looked toward the stairs and thought for a minute before deciding to put the gallon of milk away as step one.
As Drew was closing the fridge, he heard someone come down the stairs and turned to see Detective Hailey walk in the kitchen.
"You're awake!" Detective Hailey smiled just before stepping on the puddle of milk and slipping backwards.
Jay pulled his shirt on and grabbed his badge off his nightstand. As weird as it was to be leaving Drew for the first time in a week, it did feel good to be going back to work. He decided to check on Drew and walked down the hallway, but stopped before he could open the door because of a loud crash downstairs.
Jay ran down the stairs, "Hailey?" He skidded to a stop in the kitchen to see Hailey laying on the ground and Drew frozen by the fridge. "What just happened?" he asked.
Hailey tried sitting up and grabbed the back of her head, "Ow."
Drew bit his lip and whined softly.
"Hey, hey," Jay whispered and knelt next to Hailey as he helped her sit up, "You okay?"
"I…yeah," Hailey said and put her head in her hands.
"I-I-I'm sorry!" Drew yelled.
Hailey shook her head, "It's okay."
Drew started crying softly, "I didn't mean to."
Jay glanced at him, "Drew, can you grab me an ice pack?"
"Am I bleeding?" Hailey whispered.
Jay looked at the back of her head, "No, why?"
"I smacked it pretty hard on the chair," she breathed, "Don't scare him."
Jay nodded and looked back at Drew still crying by the fridge, "Buddy, can you please grab me ice?"
Drew started shaking and sniffled. He blinked through his tears and watched Hailey. He finally was able to calm down and opened the freezer to find an ice pack. Drew shakily walked to Jay and handed it to him.
"Thanks," Jay smiled and held it to Hailey's head.
She winced and breathed slowly.
Drew wiped his eyes and sat next to her. Thinking back to all the times she comforted him, he gently rubbed her arm and occasionally stroked her hair.
Hailey smiled at him, "Were you trying to make us breakfast?"
Drew nodded.
"That's very nice," Hailey said softly, "Thank you."
Drew smiled back and continued running his hand over her hair.
Jay reached over and gently nudged Drew's chin, "Do you think you can hold the ice while I clean this all up?"
Drew nodded and held his hand out.
Hailey bit her lip as Drew placed the ice to the back of her head. She became more worried realizing that he'd stopped talking again.
Jay seemed to notice as well since he kept an eye on Drew while wiping up the spilt milk and cereal.
Drew appeared content though. He'd stopped crying and was lightly rubbing her arm now.
Jay smiled slightly and washed his hands, "You're doing a good job, Drew."
Hailey nodded, "You are. Thank you so much."
Drew smiled back and took the ice off her head. He showed Hailey that it melted before going to the freezer and setting it in there.
Jay lightly squeezed his shoulder, "Can you go get dressed so we can take you to Ms. Isabetta's house?"
Drew nodded and hurried upstairs.
"He's not talking again," Jay stated the second Drew was out of the room, "I don't like when that happens."
"I know," Hailey sighed, "But it didn't seem like he was scratching and he was calm."
"Calm? Hailey, he didn't say a word!" Jay snapped.
"Keep your voice down," Hailey whispered and carefully stood.
"You good?" Jay reached out to her and grabbed her arm.
"Yeah," Hailey breathed and felt the back of her head, "It doesn't feel too bad."
Jay felt behind her head, "Maybe you should take the day off."
"No, I'll be fine. I think that'd freak him out though and make him feel worse if I play the sick card," Hailey shook her head.
Jay stared at her before shaking his head and stating, "No running. No jumping. No shooting your gun."
Hailey rolled her eyes, "You're overreacting."
Hailey groaned and bent over to rest her elbows on her knees. She panted and tried catching her breath after chasing an offender down the street with Vanessa.
Jay pulled up to her in his truck, "Hailey Anne."
Hailey was too tired to roll her eyes and fight back, so she simply got in the backseat of the truck and rubbed the back of her head where the headache was starting to radiate through her.
Kevin turned from the passenger seat to look at her, "Care to explain?"
Hailey closed her eyes and leaned her head against the window, "No."
Jay shook his head and sped off to meet Hank and Vanessa around the corner, "She fell this morning and hit her head."
"Ah, so you showed up injured," Kevin nodded.
"Shut up," Hailey mumbled.
Jay parked the car and jumped out with Kevin to help Vanessa. Hailey sighed and rubbed her face. Jay was pissed…and she didn't totally blame him. She knew the second she saw stars this morning when her head connected with the chair that she shouldn't go to work.
Hank roughly knocked on the window before stepping back and putting his hands in his pockets.
Hailey groaned and tilted her head back, but still pushed open the door and hopped out, "Sarge."
"You want to tell me why you lost sight?" Hank asked.
Hailey winced and looked over at Vanessa putting the man in the back of a patrol car, "Rojas had the better angle anyway."
"I'm not accepting excuses, Upton," Hank snapped.
Jay glanced over and held back a sigh.
"Using her maiden name," Kevin breathed, "Not good."
"It won't happen again," Hailey said and crossed her arms.
Hank smacked his hand to the truck door, "Why did you lose sight?"
Hailey glanced toward Jay.
"Upton," Hank shouted, "You're talking to me."
"I fell this morning, boss," Hailey said quietly, "Hit my head pretty hard."
Hank stepped back and shook his head, "What have I told you all about showing up injured?"
"To be honest," Hailey held his eye contact.
"Because if something were to happen to you because you chose to play hero instead of being safe, that's grounds for a huge mess," Hank said, "Get in my car."
"I can have Jay take me home," Hailey argued.
"Get in my car," Hank repeated and pointed toward it, "Now."
Hailey shook her head and walked toward the car.
"You," Hank turned to Jay, "What were you thinking?"
"I told her to stay home," Jay stated.
"Sometimes you need to be the bigger man," Hank said before getting in the car with Hailey and driving away.
Jay looked at Kevin and Vanessa, "What the hell?"
Vanessa shrugged, "I kind of agree with him."
"Don't make me feel worse than I already do," Jay mumbled and walked to his truck.
When Kevin, Vanessa, and Jay walked into the district, they were surprised to see Hailey behind the front desk with Trudy.
With Trudy might not have been the right words. The right words were probably that Hailey was behind the desk being lectured by Trudy.
"Concussions are serious injuries, Upton," Trudy was saying, "You made a stupid decision today."
Hailey glanced toward the door at her friends and weakly held up a hand to wave.
Trudy glanced at them, "Chuckles. Here. Now."
Kevin smirked and hit Jay's back, "Good luck," he walked upstairs with Vanessa.
Jay sighed and went to the desk, "Yeah?"
"You were head over heels for this woman for years, finally marry her, and then you put her in danger?" Trudy asked.
"I told her to stay home!" Jay shouted in disbelief.
"Doesn't matter," Trudy shook her head, "I am shocked."
"It's not his fault," Hailey said quietly, "I told him that Drew would feel worse about it if I stayed home."
Trudy turned to her and raised her eyebrows, "What's Drew got to do with this?"
"He tried making us breakfast and spilt milk on the ground. I slipped on it," Hailey explained, "He…he shut down and I didn't want to worry him any more."
Trudy looked between Hailey and Jay, "He shut down?"
"He stops talking when he does something 'bad' or if something bad happens to him. I don't know if it's his way of punishing himself or if it's his autism taking over, but it scares me at least," Jay said and rubbed his face.
Hailey nodded, "At least if he's talking we know a little bit about what's going through his head."
Trudy sighed, "Have you talked to anyone yet?"
"We've talked to Dr. Charles a little as a family and Jay talked to him the other day," Hailey said.
"He suggested we talk about PTSD, so we did that last night," Jay continued.
Trudy wasn't really listening anymore and smiled, "You two really got this parent thing down, don't you?"
"Not at all," Hailey groaned and sat in the desk chair.
Jay leaned against the desk, "We keep getting thrown for loop after loop."
"You called yourself a family though," Trudy said.
Hailey blushed, "We're getting used to that. We-uh-all told each other 'I love you' last night."
"Now that's the cutest thing I've heard all day," Trudy laughed softly.
Jay chuckled, "It was pretty cute."
"Has he called you 'Mom and Dad' yet?" Trudy asked.
"No," Hailey shook her head, "The idea of calling us his parents seems to make him nervous, so we're not pushing it."
"It'll happen when it's meant to," Trudy nodded, "From what I can see, you two are doing a good job."
"Thanks," Jay smiled at Hailey.
"Now, you," Trudy pointed to Jay, "Upstairs. We're gonna have girl talk and she's working down here for the rest of the day."
"Fine by me," Jay leaned over the desk, "You're sure you're okay?" he asked Hailey.
She nodded and reached forward to brush her thumb under his eye, "I'm fine. Go. Save the world."
Jay chuckled and grabbed her wrist to kiss it lightly, "See you later."
"You two make me want to vomit," Trudy said and lightly pushed Jay away.
Jay winked at Hailey and hurried up the stairs.
"Well," Trudy looked at Hailey, "Seeing as you so blatantly ignored your health today, you can file all this paperwork for injuries on the job," she slid a stack of paperwork down the desk, "Get to work."
Hailey bit back a groan and stood to start sorting.
"Stop speeding," Hailey breathed as Jay drove to pick up Drew.
"I'm a police officer, I can get us out of a ticket," Jay mumbled while whipping around a corner.
"Really? After what happened today? I don't think Voight's too happy with us," Hailey asked.
Jay shook his head, but he still slowed down and drove only five miles over the speed limit the rest of the way to the hour.
Once the car was parked, Hailey and Jay walked up to the front door. Hailey rang the doorbell and nervously looked around. Jay rubbed her back and smiled as the door opened.
An older woman answered the door, "Hi! He's been waiting for you." She turned around, "Drew?"
Drew ran to the door and happily jumped onto Jay.
Jay laughed and hugged him, "Hey! How're you?"
Drew just smiled and nodded quickly.
Hailey tried to keep the smile on her face, but that one moment of silence was enough to break her heart and tell her Drew was still lost in his own thoughts.
"Let's get you home, okay?" Jay said and carried Drew to the car.
Hailey lingered back and asked, "Has he been like this all day? Not talking?"
The woman nodded slightly, "He's been watching a lot of nature movies and drawing." She passed Hailey a stack of paper, "A lot of birds like usual."
"Thank you," Hailey smiled and walked to the car. Once she got in, she showed Jay the pictures, "Look what Drew made."
Jay looked through them, "Wow, bud, you were busy."
Drew nodded and happily put his seatbelt on.
"Let's stop for dinner," Hailey said, "Maybe Mexican?" she looked at Drew, "Do you want tacos for dinner?"
Drew nodded and smiled.
Jay sighed and started driving.
Once the food was on the table, Hailey couldn't be patient anymore. She didn't like communicating through nodding and, frankly, she missed Drew's voice.
"Drew, what's wrong?" she said.
Drew blushed and his eyes grew wide.
Jay glanced at Hailey and bit his lip, continuing to spoon salsa onto Drew's plate.
"I miss talking to you," Hailey continued.
Drew chewed his lip and broke a chip in half.
"I do too," Jay said softly, "We're worried about you."
Hailey reached across the table, "Honey, I'm fine. I'm okay. You didn't hurt me."
Drew shook his head, but still let her hold his hand.
Jay got out of his seat and moved around the booth to sit next to Drew, "Are you overwhelmed again?"
Drew opened his mouth before nodding again.
"Because of this morning?" Hailey asked.
Drew started nodding and then shrugged.
Jay and Hailey exchanged a look before Jay said, "Bud, you're going to have to talk to us so we can help you. We can't read your mind."
Drew reached out and grabbed more chips, breaking them on his plate.
"Breaking chips is much better than scratching," Hailey said softly.
Drew smiled and nodded, showing them his arms.
"We're proud that you didn't scratch," Jay squeezed his shoulder.
Hailey said, "Do you want to talk to anyone? Maybe Doctor Will or Doctor Charles?"
Drew shook his head.
Jay closed his eyes and pressed his fingers to the bridge of his nose, "Let's just eat." He slid over his own plate and took a bite of his taco.
Hailey sighed and did the same.
Drew looked between the two of them confused. Finally, he whispered, "I'm not gonna get in trouble?"
Jay swallowed his food, "For what?"
Drew nodded toward Hailey.
Hailey shook her head, "Of course not. Accidents happen. I should have watched where I stepped; it's my fault that I slipped."
Drew bit his lip, "I'm sorry."
"I know," Hailey reached out to squeeze his hand, "I'm glad you're talking again."
Drew smiled a little and picked up his taco.
They quietly ate until Drew said quietly, "I watched a lot of movies today about animal families."
"I noticed you drew a lot of mom and baby birds," Jay said, "Is that why?"
"I was thinking about families a lot," Drew nodded with a small smile.
Hailey smiled, "We talked about families today too."
Drew blushed as he looked down at his plate.
"Want to go home?" Jay asked.
Drew nodded.
"Okay," Jay breathed out and stood to pay the bill.
"He's still too quiet," Hailey said softly outside the bathroom door while pacing the hall.
Jay nodded from his seat against the bathroom door, "I know. We got – what? – fifteen words out of him."
Hailey ran a hand through her hair, "Gosh."
"How's your head?" Jay asked.
"Fine, I'm fine," Hailey shrugged him off.
"Come here," Jay held his hand out.
"It's nothing," Hailey said, "We need to help Drew first."
"And to help Drew, I think we need to help you," Jay said slowly, "Now, come on."
Hailey sighed and sat next to him.
Jay gently pressed against the back of her head, "There's definitely a bump."
"Don't say it loudly," Hailey whispered.
Jay rolled his eyes and pushed her forehead so he could look at it, "You have so much hair."
"Don't insult me," Hailey said.
Jay smirked and rubbed his thumb over the bump, "Still sore?"
Hailey nodded, "A bit."
The door opened and Jay fell backwards against Drew's legs.
Drew laughed, "What're you doing?"
"Waiting for you," Jay smiled and sat back up, "How was your shower?"
"Good," Drew said. He carefully stepped over them and went to his room.
Hailey jumped up and followed him, "Are you okay?"
"Yes," Drew said and put his clothes in the hamper. He picked up the pictures he'd drawn earlier and passed them to Hailey with shaky hands.
Jay walked in and leaned against the doorframe, "You worked hard on those."
Hailey nodded and looked over the pictures again, "Do you want us to hang these up?"
"I…" Drew bit his lip, "Um…no…Mom."
Hailey sucked in a breath, "What?"
Jay smiled and straightened up.
Drew started shaking, "I-I thought a lot about you today and what m-moms are when I w-watched those movies."
Hailey blinked her eyes quickly and knelt in front of Drew, "Do you…do you think of me as a mom?"
Drew nodded, "Because you said you love me."
"I do love you," Hailey said softly, "Can I have a hug?"
Drew smiled a little and hugged her tightly.
Jay watched and chuckled, covering his mouth with his hand. He could tell Hailey was crying by the way her shoulders were shaking, and Drew caught on to that as well.
He pulled away from her, "Why are you sad?"
"Happy tears," Hailey smiled.
"Doctor Will said people do that," Drew nodded and lightly wiped her face, "I don't really understand, but that's okay."
Jay walked over, "Happy tears are because she's overwhelmed," he sat next to them.
"Oh," Drew bit his lip. He ran to his bed and grabbed his stuffed dinosaurs and a blanket. He put the blanket over Hailey's shoulders and handed his toy to her, "This is a positive decision. Don't scratch."
Hailey laughed through her tears and nodded, "Thank you."
Jay set his hand on Drew's back, "You've been taking good care of her all day."
Drew smiled at him, "Because she takes care of me. If you get hurt, I'll take care of you too."
Jay chuckled and hugged him, "I'll take you up on that."
Drew froze a little before relaxing and hugging Jay back.
Hailey sniffled and wiped her eyes, "I love you so much, Drew."
He turned and nodded, "I love you too."
"Want to sleep in our bed tonight?" Hailey asked.
"Will it make you stop crying?" Drew asked in reply.
Hailey laughed softly and nodded, "I think so."
"Then we should go to bed," Drew said and held his hand out, "I'll tuck you in."
Hailey smiled and stood, taking his hand. They walked to the bedroom together, but Jay held back and rubbed his face. He looked around the room and picked up the pictures Drew had drawn. They weren't perfect, but there were a lot of birds in nests eating worms, he could make that out that much.
Drew came back, "Detective Jay, are you coming?"
Jay swallowed, "Y-yeah, yeah, I'll come."
"Okay," Drew smiled and hurried down the hall.
Jay slowly blew out his breath and walked down to his room.
Drew was climbing on the bed and tucking a blanket around Hailey who was laughing and trying to tickle him as he crawled around.
"Detective Jay," Drew pat the bed.
Hailey's smile fell when she saw Jay try to put a happy face on as he turned off the lights and walked over to sit on the bed.
"Lay down," Drew said as he laid himself next to Hailey.
Jay nodded and laid back against the pillows.
"Goodnight, M-Mom," Drew whispered shakily.
Hailey held him close, "Goodnight, Drew."
"Goodnight, Detective Jay," Drew held Jay's hand.
Jay squeezed his hand, "Goodnight."
Jay waited until he was positive Drew was asleep to slip out of bed. He grabbed his phone and walked downstairs. Once sitting at the kitchen table, he called Will.
"It's late," Will finally answered.
"10pm is not late," Jay rolled his eyes.
"It's late when you just worked a double," Will mumbled, "What's up?"
"I…never mind, I shouldn't have called," Jay sighed and rubbed his face.
"Is it about Drew?" Will asked.
"Kind of?" Jay replied.
"Go on," Will chuckled, "Is he sick?"
"He…he called Hailey 'Mom' today," Jay said quietly.
"That's great!" Will smiled.
"Sure," Jay mumbled.
"Oh," Will breathed, "I'm guessing he didn't call you 'Dad?'"
"Bingo," Jay said and looked around the kitchen, "I'm just worried that maybe some of Dad rubbed off on me and I'm in-capable of raising children."
"Don't be dramatic, Jay," Will said, "That's not at all true. You're a good dad."
"And yet I haven't been called 'Dad' yet," Jay shook his head.
"Let's look at it analytically," Will started.
Jay rolled his eyes, "Here we go."
"Do you want my advice?" Will asked.
"I don't know what I want," Jay said, "I guess someone to commiserate with."
"Dad wasn't perfect, but he cared about us, I thought you've learned that," Will stated.
"He had a funny way of showing it and what if it really screwed me up to be a dad?" Jay slid down in his seat.
"When he called Hailey 'Mom,' what happened? Why do you think he said it?" Will asked.
Jay sighed and stared at the wall, "I don't know. I mean…she fell today. She slipped on some milk that he spilt. He did this thing where he doesn't talk because he's upset and stuck in his head and when he finally decided to talk, one of his first sentences involved calling her 'Mom.'"
Will thought for a moment before saying, "So he felt guilty?"
"I don't know," Jay ran his hand through his hair, "He said he watched a lot of nature movies today, I'm guessing those Disney ones with the famous people talking, and it made him think about her and family."
"Those movies are always about moms and their babies," Will explained, "I don't think you should take it personal."
"There's no way to not take it personal," Jay said.
"Jay?"
He looked up to see Hailey standing at the edge of the kitchen with her arms crossed.
"I should go," Jay said slowly into his phone.
"Hailey there?" Will asked.
"Yeah," Jay whispered.
"Good luck," Will said before ending the phone call.
Jay set his phone on the table, "That was Will."
Hailey nodded, "I guessed."
Jay swallowed, "How much did you hear?"
"When you asked if you were screwed up," Hailey said softly. She sat at the table next to him, "You are not screwed up."
Jay shook his head and stared at the ceiling.
"I don't even know what to say to you," Hailey gently took his hand, "My first instinct was to be angry-"
"No, no, I'm sorry," Jay said quickly, "Don't-"
"Hey," Hailey squeezed his hand, "Can I explain please?"
Jay bit his lip, "Yeah."
Hailey reached over and rubbed her thumb under his eye, "Part of me is still a little upset that you…didn't seem happy for me or seem to understand what this meant for us as a family, but then I realized that he was still actively calling you 'Detective Jay' and my heart kind of broke because I want you to feel what I'm feeling right now. You wanted this maybe even more than I did at the beginning and now he's calling me 'Mom.'"
"I am happy for you," Jay said softly, "Hailey, this a huge step for you and for him."
Hailey nodded, "I wish more than anything you could share this too."
Jay breathed deeply, "Don't, it's okay. Will said those movies Drew was watching were all about moms and babies and he's right, it's probably been in his head all day, but also," he bit his lip, "Hailey, you seriously are an amazing mom. He's used to a negligent mom and you are quite the opposite," he smiled and squeezed her hand, "I think he's always wanted a mom like he sees on TV and you are that and more for him."
Hailey smiled a little, "Thank you."
Jay nodded and looked down at the table. He rubbed his face and stood, "I think I'm going to shower in his bathroom so I don't wake him."
"You've already showered," Hailey said softly and grabbed his hand.
Jay looked away, "Being clean isn't a bad thing."
"Jay," Hailey stood and set a hand on his back.
Jay shook his head, "I need to shower."
Hailey walked to the front of him and hugged him tightly, "You are a great dad, Jay, that is not a question at all."
Jay held her against him, "Why do I feel like I failed the biggest test?"
Hailey lightly rubbed her hands up and down his back, "What would you be saying if the roles were reversed?"
"That it didn't truly matter, that he loves you," Jay said automatically.
"Exactly," Hailey breathed, "He loves you," she bent back to look him in the eyes, "I don't think he's really had a dad and he's trying to put all the pieces together. Like you said, he knows what a mom is not, he might not know exactly what a dad is."
Jay nodded slightly, "He did refer to you as his mom with Will."
"Right," Hailey ran her hand over his hair, "But from day one he's said that you make him feel safe and that is very important."
Jay tried to smile, "I guess."
"It will come," Hailey gently held his face, "Repeat that."
Jay chuckled, "Hailey."
"Say it," Hailey smirked.
Jay sighed, "It will come."
"And we will throw a party when it does," Hailey lightly kissed him, "He loves you; that is what's important."
Jay nodded, "I know."
Hailey slid her hands down his chest, "Come on, let's get back to bed, cuddle our son, and sleep."
Jay smiled, "Our son."
Hailey nodded, "Our son."
Jay hugged her again, "I'm sorry for how I acted, it wasn't fair."
Hailey shook her head, "There are more important things to worry about."
Jay pulled back and raised his eyebrows, "Hailey, I was kind of a dick."
"You said it," Hailey set her hand on his shoulder.
Jay chuckled and shook his head, "Fair."
Hailey took his hand and started walking toward the stairs, "They weren't my words."
"But they were your thoughts?" Jay asked.
"Not answering that," Hailey said and up to their room.
A/N: As always, thank you so so much for the kind reviews! They really mean so much to me and brighten my day!
