Author's Note: Here's another chapter! Enjoy!
Lily Potter
Lucius Malfoy
It's January 9th today. Which is a very important day. Do you know why?
It's Sev's birthday today!
I am going to give him the best day ever. I am going to throw him a party! And guess what? I have the best idea ever!
Erm, not really. I'm no expert at throwing parties. I am going to need some help. But, I have no idea who will ever help me! No Slytherin is ever going to help in throwing a party, and no Gryffindor is going to help throw a party for any Slytherin.
Such biased opinions, I know!
Okay, so my plan (for now) is to act like I forgot Sev's birthday. I know I shouldn't do this, because I have no idea if the party will be thrown..!
Still!
It's a muggle thing my dear witches and wizards, a muggle thing.
"Hello Lily!" a voice startles me out of my thoughts. I look up and realize that Sev is standing there with a smile on his face.
"Hello Sev!" I reply, and his face lights up, "How are you?"
His smile dims a little as he begins to say, "You don't-" and then he stops himself and composes himself. I feel bad, but I really need to keep this a secret.
"How about we go for a walk?" I ask brightly and he nods. Off we go, talking and laughing like friends.
Thank Merlin.
I spot Lucius Malfoy and Sev out of the corner of my eye. I quickly turn the corner and say, "Hey Sev!"
Lucius began to leave, but I quickly stopped him by saying, "Wait! I actually came for you, Lucius." He turned around, clearly surprised that I wanted to talk to him and not Sev. Sev looked suspiciously towards me. I ignored him and dragged Malfoy around a corner. I performed the Muffliato spell,, and Malfoy gave me a questioning look.
"It's Sev's birthday today!" I exclaimed brightly and Malfoy looked at me oddly.
"It is? He never mentioned it… Maybe he forgot," he said with a shrug.
"Or maybe he didn't forget, and maybe he's just annoyed that you forgot!"
He rolled his eyes. "Seriously? Snape doesn't give a frick about birthdays!"
I was downcast. Sev didn't care about his birthday? Then everything will go to waste!
"Oh," I said quietly. But I quickly regained my energy. I didn't care whether he cared or not, I was going to make his birthday the best birthday ever!
"Anyways, I was thinking we could organize a party for him!" I continued and Malfoy blanched.
"Uh, no way! I'm out of here!" he stated bluntly and he turned to leave.
No! This cannot be happening! I need someone to help me! I can't to this by myself! I can feel hot tears springing to my eyes, and I feel ashamed that I'm crying over a matter so small.
"Please! Wait! I need someone to help! Please! He's my best friend!" I shouted desperately.
Malfoy stopped in his tracks. He seemed to be contemplating helping me, and I really hope he'll say yes.
He did.
"Okay. I'll do it," he agreed and I beamed happily. YES!
"Well, you're going to give the invitations, and I'll organize the party! Be sure to invite all the Slytherins!" she said quickly, not giving him a chance to interrupt..
"I - what? No way! No one'll agree! We're-"
"Come on! Give it a try!" I stopped his internal freak out. "Okay, I'll see you later. These are the invitations, and this is the list of people you should invite."
I handed him the list, gave him a small wave and left.
Wonderful! I finally got some help! Now I just have to organize the party… I head back to the common room (practically skipping by now) to begin planning the party.
Okay, so now I need to plan the party.
Hurrah.
Goodness gracious, how did I ever think I could pull this off?
I need help. Professional help. However, this is not the muggle world where I can simply call some of my friends and we can order decorations and things like that.
Why, oh why, does everything happen to me?
Er, that's a lie, I brought this upon myself… but still. Anyway… I need help organizing this party. I told Malfoy that he could do the invitations, and it didn't seem like he was going to do anything else so now I have to find more help.
But who is ever going to be willing to help me plan a party for Sev?
The only people I know are the Marauders, and while they would do anything for me, they most definitely won't do this.
Wait… do anything for me… Marauders… Potter.. Love!
James Potter! He'll do anything for me! Even this! At least… I hope. Well, I suppose I have to try don't I?
"Hey guys!" I say unsurely to the group of boys before me. James looks up at me, his interest piqued and the rest follow lazily.
"Hullo, Evans," says Potter and before he can continue, Remus interrupts him.
"Hi, Lily! Did you need anything?"
I see Potter give Remus a small pout, which he ignores, and then I continue.
"I need your help. A small favor. Um, actually that's a lie. I need a big favor."
Black goes to say something, but I continue before he can get a word in. If I want them to agree, I can't give them a chance to argue.
"I need your help planning a party. And before you say anything else, let me tell you the rest of the details.
The party needs to be ready by tonight, at 7:30. The party must be in the Room of Requirement, because that is the only place we are allowed together. Before you ask any questions, let me answer them. The Slytherins are going to be invited to this party. Before you ask why, let me tell you whose party it is…
The party is for Severus Snape."
As soon as I stop talking, protests rise among the Marauders. Pettigrew and Black are the loudest, while Lupin is quieter. Potter looks like he wants to say something, but he stays quiet.
"No way!"
"That slimy git?"
"He's insufferable!"
"Sorry, Lily…"
" , Lily?!"
"I won't do it."
And on and on and on. They keep going until Potter raises a hand to stop them. They all stop talking immediately, and Lupin gives Potter a questioning look.
"Evans…" he starts off slowly,, and Pettigrew casts a worried glance at him, worried about what he's about to say.
I hold my breath, ready for the 'telling off' that I am about to get. Ugh.
"Do you really need this?"
Now that is not what I was expecting.
Black is gaping at Potter, Lupin's eye is twitching, and Pettigrew lets out an exasperated sigh.
"I- yes! Yes, I really need this! And I know how much you hate him but please, this means a lot to me and I really, really-"
"EVANS." Potter cuts me short in my rambling and I stare at him, wide-eyed. Honestly, who isn't wide-eyed by now?
"We'll do it."
Protests rise again and Potter speaks, but louder this time.
"BUT! There is one condition! You owe us eight favors."
I blink.
"What?"
"Eight favors."
"E- eight? Why eight?"
Potter smirks at me, "One for us hating Snape, and the other for us having to do this on such short notice. Two per person, and that makes eight."
By now, all four of us are silently gaping at Potter. Potter isn't acknowledging this fact, he's simply staring at me with a smirk on his face.
A full minute passes in silence and nobody says anything.
Potter, why that insufferable git! How- how dare he! He- UGH. But I really need this, don't I? This is better than what I was expecting. While it's not what I hoped, it's better than what I was expecting.
Godric.
"Fine, let's do this."
Snape asked me if we wanted to team up with the Marauders for a prank on Slughorn, but obviously I said no! I mean, considering our history, who would say yes? And plus, hanging out with the idiotic Marauders can land ourselves in detention - AGAIN. The Marauders don't know how to cover up their tracks and be smart when activating a prank, so it's practically automatic for them to get detention.
Snape would not settle the argument, however, and I only agreed because I realized that if we do get caught, we can just blame it on the Marauders. Us Slytherins are smart about covering our tracks, but we are even better at framing other people and making ourselves look innocent.
And so, we walked up to the Marauders room to offer them a part in our prank. They didn't believe us at first, and Snape nodded towards me. I nodded back, thinking that he meant he would spell them into believing, but instead he drank veritaserum! I tried to stop him, but he drank it before I could reach him, and then he got too wrapped up in his own thoughts.
Lupin asked Snape if he was lying about wanting to team up with us, and obviously he said no. But then stupid Potter had to ask him if he was in love with Lily. I swear, I wanted to punch all of their faces right this instant. If not punch, at least spell them! Snape tried to respond, but before he could, I clamped my mouth over his and he was unable to talk. Soon, he blacked out.
After he fell on the floor, I turned accusingly at the Marauders.
"How could you?!" I hollered at James.
Potter rushed to defend himself. "Calm down! I was just messing with you!"
I rounded on them. "Messing with me?! Huh?!" I grabbed the veritaserum that Snape drank and tried to shove it in Potter's mouth. Unfortunately, Lupin blocked me. Then, Black started to come at me, but Lupin stopped him.
"Stop it - both of you!" He turned to look at me. "If we're going to be a team, then these fights have to stop."
Black and I remained silent, and then I said "Well, it's only fair if I ask Potter a question, isn't it?"
Lupin looked at me with a fiery look in his eyes. "No, it's not fair, because I think James got his fair share of mistreatment. And if we want revenge on one another, then we cannot be a team."
I opened my mouth to speak again, but before I could, Snape started to stir. He sat up, and then he mumbled "How bad was it?" while looking straight at me.
"I stopped you before you made any regrettable mistakes," I said plainly whilegritting my teeth and glaring at the Marauders. Snape didn't seem to notice, because he started to round on the Marauders too. "Happy now?" he snapped, and the Marauders didn't say anything.
He got up and then we all started discussing tactics for the prank.
I was the lookout, and Snape was in charge of switching the names of the bottles in Slughorn's room. We agreed that we would switch with each other because lookout tended to get boring. Luckily for me, it wasn't boring at all.
I closed Slughorn's door, and then I started whistling, making it look like I was waiting for someone. Then, the actual Slughorn appeared. I regained my senses and approached him.
"Professor! I need your help!"
"What is it, Lucius?" he asked, looking distressed.
"I - I'm really confused on my potions homework," I asked, trying desperately to buy some time.
"Of course, my dear boy! Let me just go into my classroom," he started walking to his classroom.
"No! I, uh, just need to ask you a question."
He turned around, waiting for me to respond.
"What is the cure for, uh," I desperately tried to think, "For exploding potion?"
"Oh, that's easy, dear boy!" He started talking passionately, but I was looking at the door. I saw Potter and Snape still working on their parts, but they only seemed halfway done. I needed to drive him away from his classroom somehow.
"And that's how you cure an exploding potion! Was this really on your homework?"
"It's, uh, on my, uh, dad's work file?" I immediately corrected myself. "I mean, uh, my dad's work. He just, uh, asked me a question."
Slughorn scrunched his eyebrows and peered at me for a second, and then he headed back to the classroom.
"Oh, and! Uh… I think Dumbledore needs your help." I immediately regretted using Dumbledore for this. I knew that he would find out we're doing something suspicious soon enough.
Slughorn turned around, "Oh, thank you, my boy!" he turned around to leave. I let out a huge sigh. I was done with being lookout, thank you very much.
We successfully completed the prank, and Snape and I started heading towards Slytherin common room. As we talked about the prank and Slughorn, Evans came up to us.
"Hey Sev!" she said, excited, and I immediately knew it was my cue to leave. I started to leave, but Evans said "Wait! I actually came for you, Lucius." I turned around, a little surprised at the sudden appearance. Snape was too, because he looked suspiciously at the both of us.
Evans and I turned around a corner, and then she performed the Muffliato spell. I wondered what the emergency was. Evans soon answered my question.
"It's Sev's birthday today!"
"It is? He never mentioned it.." I trailed off, trying to remember if Snape had mentioned anything. "Maybe he forgot," I said with a shrug.
Evans rolled her eyes. "Or maybe he didn't forget, and maybe he's just annoyed that you forgot!"
Now it was my turn to roll my eyes. "Seriously? Snape doesn't give a frick about birthdays!"
Evans looked a little sad. "Oh," she said softly.
I knew I had said the wrong thing, but honestly? I don't really care! She was a mudblood, wasn't she? Evans then proceeded to say something which threw me off. "Anyways, I was thinking we could organize a party for him!"
"Uh, no way! I'm out of here!" I exclaimed, turning to leave. Honestly! A PARTY!?
"Please! Wait! I need someone to help! Please! He's my best friend!" she said, and she looked close to tears.
I paused for a second, and I truly wanted to say no. I really did. Then, I remembered that my father had never given me parties or wished me a happy birthday. Finally, I gave in. How bad could it be?
I regretted the decision not even a second after the words left my mouth.
"Well, you're going to give the invitations, and I'll organize the party! Be sure to invite all the Slytherins!" she said excitedly.
"I - what? No way! No one'll agree! We're-"
"Come on! Give it a try!" she said, cutting me off before I could say anything else, "Okay, I'll see you later. These are the invitations, and this is the list of people you should invite."
I stared at the list.
Vincent Crabbe
Gregory Goyle
Regulus Black
Bellatrix Black
Narcissa Black
Hillary Parkinson
Anthony Zabini
Rodolphus Lestrange
Leta Lestrange
Andromeda Black
Oliver Jones
George Davies
Oscar Wilson
Jacob Williams
Noah Brown
"Uhhh.." I stammered, but Evans just waved a goodbye and left.
I got myself into this mess, didn't I? It's up to me to finish it.
Shocking isn't it? I, Lucius Malfoy, a proud pureblood wizard, am now going to organize a birthday party for my friend.
"Hey! You're.. uh… invited to Snape's party." I handed him one of the invitations that Evans gave me. "It's tonight," I added. Oliver nodded, but it was hard to tell if he was going to attend. "Oh, and, it's a surprise party, so be there by 7:30." Oliver nodded again, and he said "Okay, I'll be there."
I did said the same thing with George, Oscar, Jacob, and Noah. They all replied the same thing too, and I just crossed out their names from the list. Then, I walked over to Andromeda Black. She also agreed, but she said she'd be late. I shrugged it off and told her that it would be fine.
Out of the corner of my eye, I spotted Parkinson. I handed her an invitation, saying exactly what I told all the others. She immediately accepted it, blushed, and said she'd be there. I stared after her oddly, but I didn't linger on her odd response too much. I'm not even sure why I'm doing this in the first place.
Then, I saw Crabbe and Goyle talking in hushed tones with Regulus. I walked over to them, and I handed them an invite. Goyle snickered, while Regulus said "I'm not going to this stupid party."
"There's going to be a ton of girls," I added, and Crabbe and Goyle perked up. Regulus still wasn't convinced. "Look, it really means it to this girl named Lily Evans, so just come, okay?"
Regulus thought about it, and settled on "I'll think about it."
I rolled my eyes a little and rushed on to other people. I found Lestrange and Zabini talking to each other while doing homework, and on the other corner I found Leta studying. I went over to Leta first, and Leta curiously looked over from her book.
"Uh.. here," I handed her an invite, "You're invited to Snape's party."
Leta put the invite aside and muttered "I'm too busy for parties," and continued with her homework.
"It's just one party. It would mean a lot to Evans," I continued.
"Since when do I care about Evans?"
"Well, guess what? I think you study too much. I think you need to take a break from the books and start enjoying your life," I told her, and I continued on. Leta took the invitation and started inspecting it. I smiled.
I approached Lestrange and Zabini, and then I told them the same thing I told everyone else. Zabini asked if there would be any girls there, and I said yes. Lestrange didn't say anything, but I had a feeling he had a strong urge to ask the same question.
I went on to Bellatrix and Narcissa, and Bellatrix immediately said no. Narcissa didn't meet my gaze while Bellatrix snickered and started making fun of the invite, but I didn't budge.
"Guys, just one time! It's just one party!" I grew tired of them, and I ended with "Just think about it, okay?" Before I left, I heard one more snicker from Bellatrix.
My work here was done.
Finally.
