A Sad Boy in a Tree house
Chapter 25
The First Quirks
"Because I love you."
Was Izuku thinking right? Did he just hear that? The doubts he had about their friendship were thrown into the wind as Nejire continued to watch his reaction. Reactions….Chemical Reactions….Chemicals...the ones he could barely smell right outside that were-
"Steroids!" Izuku jumped to his feet, his mind refocused on the whole reason he started lingering in this room. Nejire followed, yet unsure why the boy decided to change his mood so fast. Was it because of something she said? It was already confusing trying to keep up with him but how did steroids tie into love?
"Umm, Izuku?" Her hand brushed his, trying to get his attention so she could figure out how to help.
After examining her expression he began realizing the fact that Nejire couldn't hear his thoughts. "S-sorry, but I'm pretty sure Mr. Syers is buying alien steroids from a mysterious guest. Care to come with me to figure out what they're used for?" He extended his hand to her, a big smile on his face awaiting to jump into another mystery.
Nejire's face shined with excitement in her smile. Grabbing his hand, she was led out of the room. She had to resist skipping in her steps, she got to tell him how she felt and it didn't feel awkward at all. Now, they were about to bust a drug deal and maybe a whole operation in the past! It's too bad she can't use her quirk in the past so openly. Izuku kept his voice low in case anyone wanted to listen to the private conversation.
"A man showed up dressed for work, carrying a medical bag. Inside were vials that seemed similar to Nexocorfis medical tech from the Bython system just around the edge of this galaxy. But when I listened to their conversation they called it "edge" and he started listing off different sub names like speed or strength. I don't think it's a coincidence he shows up soon before the Syers' competition." He paused, letting Nejire soak in the information. She gave a brief nod before they walked out of the house and to the secret meeting.
"So how did he get the stuff? Or is he just a middle man?" As they grew closer they got quieter, trying not to startle the two distant men. Both were surprised to see Mrs. Syers joining the drug deal, participating even.
"Those are good questions, I think our priority is figuring out who or how he gets it. That will determine if he's the middle man or the closest to the source." They were hardly fifteen feet when the trio noticed them approaching. Izuku and Nejire smiled, acting oblivious to what was happening.
Edgar stood in front of his wife and compatriot, talking to the two teen guests. "Have you finished your work here?"
"Oh, yes! Just wanted to come and inform you in person that your house is fine and there seems to be no issues." Izuku smiled brightly to the man, exuding all the innocence he could with his youthful looking face.
"That's good, if you wish to socialize further amongst the guests you can see yourself back over towards the manor." The taller englishman spoke with some haste.
"Actually, I was hoping to get some tips in competitive sport. You see, me and my companion here wanted to participate in a sport from our country called, um-" He tried to think of some obscure sport off the top of his head that they wouldn't know about. Before half a second passed Nejire interrupted, answering for him.
"Monopoly!"
Izuku briefly gave a betrayed look to her, mentally berating her. 'Oh I see, you tell them you want to play monopoly but whenever I ask you say "why don't we just go to space disney?" They're a more toxic monopoly than any other cooperation.' With a short huff he played along, slight annoyance clear in his tone.
"Yes, monopoly. Do you know any simple ways we can get the edge on our opponents?"
That made the unknown man behind Edgar join in the discussion. He stepped in front of the other man and introduced himself. "Hello, I'm the family doctor for the Syers. I think I can help you with your sport."
'Teenagers, they'll do just about anything for this stuff.' The man grinned to himself, now he just needed to show these kids what they could have. "You see, I provide a product that can enhance whatever you desire, as long as it's within reason."
He extended his hand out, palm upward. Both of them looked in curiosity as they felt heat starting to radiate from it. Izuku pulled Nejire slightly back as the hand started glowing orange as the heat built up. The man smirked, right before he used the red hot hand to pick up a stone. Both watch as it melted within his grip, slightly sweating due to the heat it was giving off.
The Syers watched in amusement, it was always enjoyable to see the reactions of people exposed to the impossible. As for the man showing off, he glanced back up to the boy, seeing something else. In those green eyes wasn't wonder, or shock, it was analytical. He could see this boy recognizing his self granted abilities, and he was not happy. His face held innocence but behind those deep green orbs was a cold rage, waiting for an excuse to unleash hell. The doctor only saw that in a few people, and he never wanted any of them to be given any kind of power.
"It's like a quirk!" Nejire commented happily, but a little louder than she wanted. She covered her mouth quickly, hoping no one heard her. Unfortunately for her the three locals gave her an odd look. That was enough to put the final nail in the coffin for the unnamed doctor.
"I'm sorry, but I just remembered I am short of my product, I'll need to make more before I can sell any." He let the molten rock fall from his hands, cooling instantly on the ground. Izuku followed on his heels, trying to talk to the man to get enough information.
"That's ok, we can come by your office sometime and pick it up when it's ready." Izuku tried to plead innocently, but the man was already packing his bag and leaving.
"That's quite alright, you don't need my help anyways." His steps were quick as he started to storm away from the scene. He was getting far more annoyed than he would like to be. Before he could calm down anymore Izuku gripped the man's arm making him face the time lord.
"What have I told you boy! I'm-"
"Using people, taking their blood and selling it for profit!" Izuku raised his voice in anger. Nejire was holding part of her dress letting her jog up to them and ready to jump in.
"They're not people." The man growled in response to the hostility. His sleeve ignited in flames, forcing Izuku to let go from the massive heat. He stepped closer to Izuku, ready to burn out his tongue so he couldn't tell anyone his business secrets. Nejire saw the hostility and stepped in the way. The blazing arm raised above her prepared to cut her down making the other witnesses scream out in horror.
What this doctor didn't expect was to be blasted away from spiraling energy. His chest hurt, letting the heat within him heal himself. When he looked up he was left with shock, the blue haired japanese girl had twirling streaks of power over her arm. She was not happy, not happy at all.
"AAAHH!" The combatants turned to the scream, seeing that they were spotted by the party guests. Izuku ran up to Nejire and grabbed her hand.
"We need to go." he whispered to her. The man ran unnaturally fast away from the scene. Seeing how other guests were closing in on them the two time travelers ran away swiftly to where they came from. It didn't take too long for Izuku and Nejire to reach the TARDIS, he threw his key into the lock and motioned for his companion to enter. Once he saw her inside he closed the door behind himself.
Nejire circled around the console inside, letting her thoughts be known. "You said he was taking blood and selling it, whose blood can do that?"
"That man's arm, it smelled exactly like a pyrovile."
"A what?"
"A pyrovile, an alien, he's got alien blood running in him." Izuku was silently angry as he started to explain what he has pieced together. "You can't do what he has done unless you had one….alive."
Now it was Nejire's turn to be angry. "He's using that creature's blood to have a quirk?"
"It's not the only one, he was selling all sorts of simple abilities. But I bet he's keeping the best product to himself. All those different abilities, he's getting each one from a different species. And he's stealing what makes them alive." Izuku spit out the words in disgust.
Finding his way back to the console he grabbed the monitor and swung it over to himself. Nejire watched curiously as he began to work. "When he brought out those vials they interfered with the electricity running through the wires. If he has a whole operation of selling them then they're bound to be noticed. All I have to do is put a small pulse of some of the TARDIS's energy cells into the atmosphere and track the pockets. The biggest pocket-"
"Is where the doctor is hiding." Nejire finished, smiling at how clever the plan was. The time lord's arms and hands flew about the controls, doing what he promised. The silence between them started to grow dense, only filled with the clicking of buttons and small currents of energy running through the time machine.
"What will we do once we get there?" Nejire asked looking over his shoulder.
"Oh the same, save people, stop the bad guys. And since the tech here isn't supposed to be here I'll make sure that it's destroyed or back where it belongs." Izuku's voice was lighter, letting the girl know that even if he didn't like what was happening he wasn't blinded by anger.
"And, after that?"
"Hm?" He looked back at her, she seemed different, almost hesitant about the topic.
"Well, back in the house, when I told you I loved you Izuku. I was wondering if that was ok with you..and...if.." Her eyes wandered as her cheeks flushed. The words were dying in her throat but she had to ask. How did Izuku feel about her? If he didn't feel the same would they stop travelling together? She didn't want to stop but what if she brought some other girl he liked and she was left behind?
*Ding*
The screen on the TARDIS displayed a single point where a large vortex was sucking in small particles of power. With a flick of a lever from Izuku he engaged the TARDIS engines.
*Vwoorp* *VWOoorp* *VWOOORP* *VWOORP* *Thud*
Both of them raced outside, only to find themselves in a large street. Nejire closed the door as Izuku started to use his sonic to scan the area. It started beeping more rapidly as he pointed it at one of the houses. Both of them gave a quick nod before they approached the door. Nejire checked the empty street before knocking.
*knock* Knock* *BAM*
Her spirals blasted the door apart, letting the two of them enter without any problems. The house seemed relatively normal, besides the fact that it was filled with cheap beds draped with pure white sheets. Beside each one was a tray filled with medical tools, and an empty vial. Stepping through cautiously, they inspected the area to find anyone there. Silence filled the building as they checked through each door.
Nejire saw one of the beds had a blanket draped over them with someone under them. Waving Izuku over, they both examined the unknown person. Izuku lifted the sheet, revealing the dead body of a man with scabs all over skin and calluses . His face was contorted to look like he was screaming in pain. Several metal needles were littered all over his arms. "Guess not everyone lives from the drug." Nejire commented with Izuku nodding.
After resting the sheet back over the man Izuku approached the back, only to stop in place as he felt a creek under his foot. The floor was wooden panels under him with a small square notch in it, only large enough for the finger of a baby to fit into.
"I think we found out where he keeps the good." Izuku announced, drawing in Nejire. When she arrived a short blast from her quirk splintered the wood into small shards. A dark hole with a rusty ladder was hidden until now. Nejire was the first to go in, simply leaping and letting her quirk slow the fall and giving light to the hidden room.
"Oh my...this is sick" Her words echoed in the dimly lit area. Izuku made his way down the ladder hardly caring for being quiet anymore. They needed to be fast, but it still made him pause when he saw the crippled bodies chained to the ceiling and floor. Seven different species of aliens were hanging by their arms, all their heads were sunken down as if they were dead. The only thing that seemed alive were tubes connected to different parts of them feeding into small machines where the boxes lay on a table. On those boxes were several blinking lights and a pump system that connected to a tray of empty vials slowly being filled. A table in the back of the room showed a large chemistry station with some of the foreign tech integrated into it.
One of the humanoid aliens that had a blue exoskeleton let out a small cricket like chirp. Izuku dragged his feet as he approached the tortured being. "It's ok, you won't have to suffer any longer." He whispered gently to it as he traced his hand on top of its head. Nejire went over to one of the boxes and grabbed one of the tubes connected to it.
"Stop!" Izuku shouted, making the girl flinch.
"What's wrong?"
"If we take the life support out of them they'll die in seconds." That made the room feel even heavier. Nejire looked around the place, taking in the faces of every suffering creature.
"How do we get them out of here?" She started to get frantic, itching to help in any way she can.
"We can't" He replied somberly. "They won't survive in our atmosphere. The only reason they are alive is because those machines are keeping them alive. As long as they're fed basic food and water those things will keep them from dying."
Nejire's voice let out an involuntary whimper as she looked back at the victims. "We...we can't save them."
Her eyes became downcast, losing their wonderful light and hope. Izuku stepped closer to her, letting his hand grasp hers to give her some form of comfort.
"We can still save them from their pain." Izuku said solemnly.
She whipped her head up, utterly mortified by the idea. That was until voices picked up in the room as the aliens started to stir.
"Please"
"I don't want to live like this."
"We're dead anyways."
"Make the pain stop."
She tried to ignore them, ignore the hopelessness, and absolutely refuse the option to simply put them out of their misery. Trying one last time she looked at Izuku, looking for some way that they can save one soul. His appearance was as though he were the personification of defeat. Her eyes shifted back to her hand, the one that held his. The gentle spirals from her quirk circled around them as she continued to give off light to the room.
A flicker of hope came to life in her as she raised the hand to his face. "Can we use this? Like with the jellies?" Her voice begged him to say yes, to say that yes we can save everyone here.
He studied the hand for a moment before looking back to the crowd, his face somehow grew darker. "They don't have enough vitality to work with, and you don't have enough for them."
"Please, just someone. We have to save at least one person." Her eyes welled up as her vision was slightly blurred from the threat of tears. Izuku gazed over to the hostages, his eyes falling on the smallest one. She had a black one piece outfit on that extended to her ankles and just past the elbows. Her skin was transparent pink and her hair was just like clear white seaweed. If anything, she looked like a humanoid jellyfish.
"Her species, they are able to withstand above average electrical currents by channeling it through the nervous system. She might be able to allow you to use your quirk more effectively but still, there's hardly any vitality left and you haven't gotten much practice with healing." His voice was kind and informative, but the grip from his hand grew slightly tighter.
He didn't want to risk Nejire's life. It was a gamble, but it was hers to make. "Let's try it."
Izuku's hand started to glow along with hers, helping to jumpstart the vitality healing aspect of her quirk. Raising her other hand, she aimed it at the girl. Determination fueled her as she internally promised to not give up on this one soul. The spiral built up in the arm, letting her very essence flood into it.
Heat, hot swelling, BOILING HEAT
A hot red humanoid fell into the room, sending waves of scorching at everyone. The time lord and the human both started sweating madly, barely holding their ground.
"YOU MADE ME DO THIS, YOU MADE ME BURN!"
The man screamed at them, embers and flames rocketing from his mouth. Izuku let go of Nejire and grabbed his watch. His clothes started to singe before they were replaced by his hero outfit in a brief flash of light. Grabbing his retractable tool, a glowing hot rod shot out from the hilt with the electric blue coil around it. With a click of a button arches of lightning danced around it.
"Get her out of here Nejire!" Izuku shouted, swinging at the man trying to scare him into a corner. The closer he got though, more heat burned into his skin and singed the edges of his hair. Luckily, the unknown tool made the monster cautious as he paced slowly away from it.
Nejire took full advantage of it and flew straight to the girl. A quick surge from her hand broke the tubes and chains. She immediately flooded the girl with her own vitality keeping her from getting any worse. Izuku continued to distract the man but he was starting to get more courageous and approach the boy making him suffer from dehydration by how much he's sweating. Nejire tried to fly out of the room but a blast of fire emerged from the mouth of the monster, keeping them away from the exit. In an act of desperation Izuku used one of his arms to shield his face and charged at the man. Once his electrified blade made contact large sparks of lightning filled the glowing beast making him spasm.
Nejire felt her second wind kicking in and shot out of the blistering basement. Keeping the girl in his arms she looked back down in the hole, trying to keep her eyes open as scorching air was exiting from the room.
"Izuku!" She cried, but got no response. The heat continued to build up as she got no reply. She looked back to the girl in her arms who made no movements. "I'm sorry." Nejire whispered.
She leapt back into the hole with the girl in one of her arms. The edges of her dress ignited immediately, flames slowly making their way closer to her skin. Steam seemed to pour out of the girl in her arms as Nejire tried to search the room filled with flames. On the ground she made out two figures, One was glowing and one wasn't. Making a quick decision she grabbed the not glowing one with her other free arm.
Letting her quirk jet out of her feet she ascended out of the fiery pit and back into the house. Wood around the hidden floor area started to blacken as flames licked the edges, crawling to Nejire. She got on her feet, her hair stuck to her face from the sweat making it harder. The two in her arms felt heavier and heavier as every second passed and her feet felt like they were placed in cement blocks. Izuku dangled lifelessly in her arm, his costume burnt revealing several patches of red charred skin. Whatever was left of his hair smoked as his own sweat started to put out the small embers on his head. His right hand, gripping the retracted rod like his life depended on it.
Her footsteps were slow and wobbly as she made her way to the busted down door. The TARDIS sat across from the chaotic building as Nejire locked her eyes on it, feeling if she dared look away she wouldn't reach it. Lucky for her because this street seemed to have absolutely no one on it. She pressed her shoulder against the TARDIS door letting herself in. As soon as she heard the door click behind her she gently let the two bodies slide out of her arms and onto the nice cold floor. Her vision started to grow darker as she looked under one of the console panels where a sack of metal plates with jagged edges rested. She looked through them, bringing each one close to her face as she tried to read the labels.
Finding one labeled "In case of major injuries/losing consciousness." She pressed it into a thin slot. Instantly controls around the time machine arranged themselves into a preset manor. Letting exhaustion take over she slumped onto the floor, listening to the sounds of the TARDIS engines. They pulled her into a deep sleep, the vibrations of running power under her give her soothing comfort.
Ah yes, another one done. To be honest the only reason I keep this story going now is because of the wonderful comments y'all make.
What will Izuku do with Nejire's confession? Will this mystery person in the TARDIS live to see another day? Where is the TARDIS taking them now? Find out whenever, idk, the ending left a lot more questions than I initially planned to answer.
If you have any questions, comments, suggestions, feel free to send them!
