MIKE POV
I walked briskly down the street, feeling oddly detached, as if I was separate from the other people around me, all of them going about their business. But I was focused on this upcoming trial, wondering what it would involve, and why I needed a car. Specifically, this car I was being sent to collect.
Trying to focus on the present, I entered the garage and looked around. There was only one member of staff around, currently working under a car. Seeing no other choice, I approached him and called out.
"Excuse me?" I got no response, so I tried a little louder. "Excuse me?!"
The man pushed himself out, startled. "Oh, sorry, didn't hear you there. How can I help?"
"I'm here to collect...my car." I said haltingly, handing him the ticket.
Cleaning his hands, the man collected the ticket and read it before smiling and began walking towards the counter and going behind it.
"Well, I'm glad you came to pick it up at last. It's been here for some time. We kept it fully fueled and serviced, taken on a little test drive every now and then, just as you requested." he said as he handed me the keys. "Here you go, take the service elevator down to the basement, and there you go."
I took the keys and thanked him before heading towards the service elevator, looking around worriedly.
'Have I been here before? I must have if I... Urgh, I don't remember.'
The thoughts were making my head hurt, so I focused on my destination and rode down the elevator to the lower level.
Exiting the elevator, I stopped short. There was nothing down here but cars. How was I supposed to find a single particular car in all of this? I looked down at the keys and suddenly realized that there was a chance right there, all I had to do was use the key fob to remotely unlock the doors of the car and cause the headlights to briefly flare. That could tell me where the car was.
It took three tries, but I finally found the car and quickly got up to it and got inside. I looked around, unsure what to do next. However, I soon found something that had to be useful: a GPS. I set it up and turned it on.
"You are seven miles from your destination. Leave the garage and turn left." it said at once.
I was a little startled by this, it seemed something was already set up for me, no doubt the trial. I quickly buckled up and began to drive, following the directions given as the GPS began directing me to whatever location it had been set to. All that I could do was follow along and hope that I could figure out what was going on and successfully do it, so that I could get answers and hopefully get a step closer to finding Shaun.
I finally parked the car on the top of an off-ramp overlooking a freeway.
"You have reached your destination." the GPS said, before continuing in a far more ominous tone. "Are you prepared to show courage in order to save your son? Take the freeway and drive against the traffic for five miles. If you do not reach your destination in five minutes, you will have failed. You time will start the moment you begin to drive."
I froze in utter shock, trying to process what I had just heard. It was crazy, unthinkable.
'But...but I have to do it for Shaun. It's...it's my only choice. I have to do it...' I told myself.
I looked down at the road again, biting my lip before making up my mind. Making sure that my seatbelt was secure, I fixed up the car, putting it into gear, pulling off the handbrake, and pressing the accelerator as I made my way down onto the freeway, the clock ticking as I drove.
I accelerated to the highest speed that I could, dangerous in the rain and even more dangerous going against the traffic. But I only had 5 minutes.
"C'mon!" I urged myself onwards.
I drove quickly, weaving between the cars coming the other way, trying to ignore the blares of their horns and headlights. I weaved quickly right, only narrowly passing a car. Driving at these speeds was crazy, but there was no alternative, and worse, after making it at least two and a half miles, breaking through a toll booth, the police began to pursue me.
"Shit, c'mon, move, move out of the way! Out of the goddamn way!" I cried.
I continued to weave and dodge, in some cases only narrowly doing so. Making it worse, the police continued to close in. I noted a cop car in my wing mirror, beginning to try and swipe at me. I moved the wheel carefully and managed to avoid being hit.
"You still have two miles to go to reach your destination." the GPS remarked.
I grimaced. Fine so far, but I needed to hurry. I continued to dodge, including a close call with a police roadblock, just past the one mile mark. Then the car began to fish tail. It took me only moments to realize that an officer had shot at the car and punctured a tire. I cried out as the car suddenly spun out of control and, just as it passed the five mile mark, it flew off the road and the next thing I knew was blackness.
I groaned as I recovered and realized that the car was upside down. I was trapped, fire was starting to form, and I couldn't ignore the pain that I was suffering.
"You have reached your destination. Please press the screen". The GPS suddenly said.
I stared in surprise. I had made it. Frantically, I reached out and touched the screen, struggling to do so, and the GPS spoke again.
"Your reward is in the glove compartment. The key is inside the GPS".
I breathed a sigh of relief and grabbed the GPS before slamming it onto the roof, breaking it apart and revealing the key, which I quickly grabbed. I opened the glove compartment and picked up the memory card, which dropped onto the roof. I then forced the seatbelt off and kicked the door open and crawled out of the car.
I staggered away until I was under an overpass and checked the phone. Taking out the memory card, I plugged it into the phone, biting my lip, trying to resist my tears as the video of Shaun showed again, the water being higher now. Then the address was shown again, some letters being shown. Grimacing, I put the phone away and jumped as the car exploded behind me. Trying hard to focus through the pain and knowing that I had to get away before the police arrived, I began to limp away.
End of chapter and the first trial, hope you enjoyed it, read and review please.
