Pike was in his quarters. After the information he had just received from his crew on the Discovery. He was just getting some rest before he had to join the bridge again. He knew he had to get some rest otherwise Pollard would go ballistic.
He was thinking about how Tilly was being earlier. She had just being really weird. He was sure that she was fine but being captain of the ship, he had to make sure.
He decided that, that was enough rest for one day. He got up from his chair and hobbled over to the door and walked towards the bridge.
"Have we got any more power that we can give towards the journey to the next red signal?" Saru asked Detmer and Stamets.
"Not at the moment sir. The warp drive is completely spent." Stamets answered him.
"Right. Let's hope the drive gets back to its full strength soon. We don't want to be in this quadrant long."
"Yes sir." The two officers answered.
Michael looked over at Saru.
"Commander, is there any chance of moving the ship out of this quadrant?"
"You'll have to ask the captain."
"But Stamets just said that we can't."
"So why are you asking if you already knew Lieutenant?"
The rest of the bridge crew turned back to their stations. They didn't want to get involved, especially as the captain wasn't there to try and diffuse the tension.
"I just want you to actually acknowledge to me for once."
"Well I have. Happy?"
"No, I'm not."
Detmer pushed a button on the bridge controls. This button sent a message straight to the security sector of the ship. It meant that the security needed to get to the bridge as soon as possible otherwise there would be trouble.
"You need to get your priorities straight Lieutenant."
"So, do you commander. You're not giving anyone on this bridge a chance. You just take control and never let anyone speak!"
"That's because I rank higher than them."
"It doesn't mean you don't listen to them when they are trying to tell you something!"
"Where is that security team?" Detmer whispered.
Saru stood up this time to face Michael. Michael kept her ground and stared back at him, with no end of the fight in sight.
In the lift on his way up to the bridge, Pike was looking forward to seeing how the bridge crew were getting on. He knew that there was some tension between some of the officers on the bridge. Even though, he knew there was trouble, he still trusted the team enough for him to leave the bridge in Sarus hands without trouble.
The lift stopped. Pike knew the lift hadn't reached the bridge yet. The lift doors opened, and Pike found himself face to face with seven security officers on the other side of the doors.
"Captain?" One of the officers said.
"Wilson. What are you doing here?"
"On our way up to the bridge sir."
"Right. Why?"
"We don't know sir. We thought you had called us in."
"Well obviously I didn't."
"We'll wait for the lift to come back up sir."
"Don't worry. I'm going to the bridge myself."
The officers looked at each other, nodded and got into the lift. Pike pushed the button again to go to the bridge. He needed to find out what was going on in the bridge he had left to Saru with full confidence.
"Is there something else you wish to say Lieutenant?" Saru was now shouting. He was shouting so loud the whole universe could probably hear him.
"Yes. There are plenty of things I want to say." Michael came back just as loud, if not louder.
The rest of the bridge were just trying to keep out of the firing line of either of the officers. They were just hoping the security team would get there soon and stop Michael and Saru before anything got out of hand.
"Maybe we should wait until the captain gets back to chat about this?" Stamets said to try and ease the crews feelings.
Saru and Michael stared at him. Stamets withdrew back to his screen and stayed quiet. He knew that saying anything else would just cause a lot more tension.
"As I was saying, Lieutenant I'm in charge around here and you'll do as I say and now get back to your work."
"No." Michael snapped.
The bridge gasped. They knew Michael and Saru didn't get on but that was taking it a little bit too far.
"Lieutenant, you will do as I say, or I will get security to escort you off the ship."
"Lucky they're already here then." Pike said.
The bridge looked behind them. Pike was standing in the doorway with seven security officers standing next to him.
Saru faced away from the captain. Michael just looked down at her screen to try and get away from being told off too badly.
"What's going on up here then?"
The bridge didn't answer.
"Or maybe give me an answer to why nearly all of the security team has to come up here to deal with something?"
"It was nothing sir." Saru said.
"Didn't sound like it. By the way it sounded, it sounded like the whole universe was about to explode."
Some of the bridge gave out a little snigger. Saru didn't even acknowledge them and carried on talking to Pike.
"Captain we don't need all of the security team up here."
"Maybe they should stay around a little longer. Just in case anything else happens."
Pike nodded at the security and they sat down at some of the free spaces that were dotted around the bridge.
"If you think that's necessary sir." Saru said once they had all sat down.
"Yes, I do Commander. They need to stay here until I say so. Unless you have a different plan, that you want to put in place over my authority."
The crew didn't look up but knew that something was about to go down. Saru wasn't going to let that settle.
"Have I done something wrong sir?"
"You said you were in charge. Maybe you want to change my orders too."
"I only meant that I'm in charge when you're not here. Not that I want to take charge over you."
"Didn't sound like that."
Pike sat down in the captain's chair. Saru knew not to compete against Pike anymore when he was sitting in that chair. Only one thing though…
"Sir I just wondered if Lieutenant Burham could go somewhere else?"
Pike turned round to look at Michael.
"Are you alright there Burham?"
"Yes sir."
"Nothing wrong? No trouble with your work?"
"I don't think so sir."
"Good. There you go Saru, she's fine where she is. I'm happy with her work so should you."
"Yes sir."
Saru stopped and didn't take it any further. He knew fighting with the captain would only cause drama amongst the crew. Plus, Pike had been badly injured a few months ago he was probably in a bad mood over that. He was going to be back in normal mode soon.
