AN: This one's kind of weird… but please forgive me. Everything is hell right now. Everything was hell before all this craziness and I think I would just like to let this happen as it does. Please enjoy…
Chapter Seventeen:
I didn't have a long life. Still, I've no doubt I left an impact. It was not in the way I would have picked if I had a choice. I came to life and not long after my father dropped me off at a church. I didn't really have time to get any kind of read on it. There were lots of children running and playing in the yard. I sat watching from the bench where I was abandoned and thought it was a nice view. I wished for the kids to keep playing. It would be nice if that innocent happiness could just last.
Nothing lasts forever though. I was never meant to last for long.
Neither was that happiness. People were rushing around. Women in long black gowns talking in hushed whispers as the subtle feeling of anxiety began to feel the air. The kids were interrupted. Silenced and held under a tense silence. Suddenly there was a rush of movement and a woman was peering down at me. Fear in her eyes.
She motioned for another woman dressed in a similar black and white outfit. They had all been moving past me without notice for hours now. It was nice to know I wasn't actually invisible.
"We found it." The first woman whispered as the other crossed herself. Call the police I will call Michael." The next few minutes were full of confusion and strained commands.
I felt something inside me snap.
The woman was rushing out the door and as I wondered if she would be going with me a strangled yell filled the air just as something big and dark fell over me. There was a flash of yellow and a scream then the world was gone. Why couldn't I have been born a calculator?
2005
Four people laugh as they walk into a small home. "We're going to do it." The single woman in the group said. This beautiful blond was Elizabeth newly Brown but everyone called her Liz. "We're finally moving to New York." Olin was beaming as he kissed her.
"That's amazing." He said. "So you got the job?"
She punched his shoulder. "You bet I did." Then she turned to Ricky, her brother, and Olin's brother Bernard. Smiling softly. So unbelievably proud of them. "I'll miss you two psychos."
"We'll miss you too sis." Ricky says smiling as Liz and Bernard hug. Then she hugs her brother and he gives her a bear hug. "Don't forget about us little folk." He pats her on the shoulder.
Olin laughs cuffing him in the arm. "Never bro." Then he catches Ricky's eyes suddenly serious. "Take care of my brother."
Ricky returned the look. "Take care of my sister."
Lizz laughed. "We both know I'll be taking care of him!"
Bernard holds up a fist laughing. "Take care." He says and pulls Olin into a one armed hug as the fistbump initiates.
"Take care of my sister." Ricky whispers again hugging Olin next.
"Always." The man smiles at Liz, his eyes gentle.
2012
Ricky remembers staring in shock at the T.V. as Bernard rushes to call Olin. His voice is frantic as he talks. "Did you ever get a hold of Liz? Olin? We're watching the television right now. Are you safe?"
Lizz had been busy at work and unable to stay in contact. "I'm sure she'll show up. Just… stay calm- stay safe."
They stayed in close contact for the next few days but it was a week later before they heard anything for sure. It was the middle of the night and Ricky is woken up with his arms curled around Bernard. He hums as he's pulled from sleep by the sound of "Trouble" by P!nk blaring from his boyfriend's phone. Bernard grones as he reaches for the device. "'lo?"
Ricky snorts in surprise as Bernard sits up with a start. "Olin? What happened?"
Yawning Ricky sits up glancing at the clock. Its red numbers glaring a furious 4:45 Am. It was early for all of them. "Slow down. What happened?" There's a pause and Bernard straightens his body tense. "Is it…"
Bernard's voice catches and he makes a strangled sound. "What?"
That was when they all knew they'd never see Liz again. The week after The Incident they found out that their friend and sister had been killed in the attack.
Bernard wanted to rush up right away. Ricky managed to convince him to stay and take care of his mother and hold onto his job. Besides Liz was his sister. If one of them had to stay behind it wasn't going to be him.
Ricky was going to lay his sister to rest and then he was going to bring Olin back.
They had planned a year but finances and arrangements made them realize it would take longer. They found they were ready to move in three. Just as they were starting to plan their move back Olin was visited in the night by a man in a skull mask. The man said only one thing. "Read." As he dropped a folder on their table and left.
It's contents were shocking. Liz had said she was a software engineer. It was shocking to find that she had actually been a spy. An operative for an agency calling itself The Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division or S.H.I.E.L.D.
Finding that out was shocking to her husband but not truly surprising. Liz was always amazing. No, it was finding out the rest. The fact that she'd died during an attack on a flying ship. Burned in an explosion caused by the destruction of an engine.
The attack was carried out by a couple of men under mind control who had also recruited S.H.I.E.L.D.'s enemies. The one who caused the engine to explode the one who led the invading force with so much precision one had to question the legitimacy of this so-called mind control was an agent code-named Hawkeye.
An agent that wasn't just forgiven for this atrocity but also given the title of hero. Put on the same level- the same team as Iron Man. He was not punished for his crimes, he was rewarded. It was a failure in the system that Olin could not forgive.
Hawkeye took his everything. Olin was going to take down Hawkeye and punish the organization that did not know how to reprimand its own men.
A year later Black Widow and Hawkeye told the world about themselves and all of
S.H.I.E.L.D.'s dirty laundry. Now as his plans had finally come together he no longer had any reservations about wiping out what was left of the fractured association.
Olin knew how to blow shit up. If anyone knew that it was Ricky, which is why he had to be stealthy or be stopped before his justice could be served. Ricky couldn't know. Even if he deserved this. All of them did.
