A/N: Thank you so much for your reviews last chapter! They all mean so much to me :)

The week went on and Jay's patience was dropping. He was even doing the math and Drew was starting to say 'Detective Jay' twice as often as he'd say 'Mom.' It was like he was purposefully laying it on thick. Jay just wasn't 'Dad' to Drew and it was really bothering him.

"It's starting to stress you out too much," Hailey finally said as she watched Jay count up the points he'd been recording on his phone all day. They were sitting on the back porch drinking a beer after putting Drew to bed and Hailey wasn't in the mood to listen to Jay pout.

"He said 'Mom' ten times today, Hailey, and he said 'Detective Jay' eighteen times," Jay put his phone down, "Do you still think this means I'm not a screw up?"

Hailey sighed, "I think it means he's still getting used to the idea of calling me 'Mom,' so he's reaching out to you even more."

"And calling me 'Detective Jay,'" Jay shook his head and picked up his phone to look at it again, "What's wrong with wanting him to say 'Dad?'"

"Nothing at all, but you have to let it happen naturally," Hailey said and reached over to grab Jay's phone out of his hand, "Now knock it off."

"It's just data," Jay put his hand out, "Give it back."

"It's data that's hurting you," Hailey put his phone in her pocket, "All I want to do right now is sit and enjoy a beer with my husband, is that so bad?"

"No," Jay mumbled and sat back in his chair.

They both slowly drank their beer and watched the sky as the wind picked up and the tree branches swung through the sky. Hailey enjoyed the peace and quiet. It had taken them a couple days, but they had finally solved a case that she knew was bothering Vanessa, so she was glad for her friend's sake that it was over. She glanced at Jay and sighed upon noticing the stress on his face. She knew it had nothing to do with work and was all about the boy sleeping upstairs.

"Hey," she whispered and set her beer down, "Jay."

He glanced over at her, his forehead still wrinkled.

"Relax," Hailey said softly and stood. She gently sat on his lap, "I'm getting worried about you."

"Don't," Jay shook his head, "I hate feeling like a burden to you. This is my mess and my own problem that I need to deal with on my own."

Hailey raised her eyebrows, "Jay, don't start with that." She lightly traced the lines on his face, "You're going to give yourself a headache."

"I've had one for days," Jay mumbled, "It's not a big deal. Figured it'd go away when he finally said it."

"You can't put that amount of pressure on him," Hailey said softly, "You have to let it happen."

"It's proving to be very difficult," Jay looked at the ground.

"I know," Hailey rubbed her thumb over his cheek, "He still loves you, he says that a lot."

Jay smiled slightly and nodded, "He does."

"Let's go lay in bed," Hailey stood and put her hand out, "I want to just be with you right now, okay? No distractions, just me and you."

Jay took her hand and his smile grew, "Doesn't sound like a bad idea."

Hailey's hands ghosted over Jay's back, "You haven't been to the gym in a couple weeks."

Jay looked up at her, "What's that supposed to mean?"

Hailey laughed and kissed the back of his neck, "Just an observation."

Jay smirked and rolled over, grabbing Hailey's waist and pulling her on top of him, "Are you saying I need to start lifting weights again?"

"I'm saying…" Hailey searched for words and held back a laugh.

"So I'm chubby now, huh?" Jay sat up, keeping Hailey in his lap.

"No," Hailey laughed, "Not at all."

Jay chuckled and kissed her softly, "Sure."

Hailey held his arms, "You look perfect as always."

A tree branch knocked against their window with a bang and they both jumped at the sound.

Jay slid Hailey off his lap and walked across the room to look outside, "The wind's picking up."

"It wasn't supposed to storm though," Hailey pulled a blanket over her.

"It can still be windy without a storm," Jay chuckled and got back in bed.

"I guess," Hailey looked at him.

"You okay?" Jay pulled her against him.

"Of course," Hailey reached up to kiss his chin softly.

Jay bent down and caught her lips in his. They continued until their fan slowed to a stop above them.

"Crap," Jay breathed and sat up. He quickly got out of bed and hurried downstairs.

Hailey caught her breath and looked around their room. She noticed the small nightlight in their bathroom was off and figured the power was out. She walked downstairs where Jay was messing with the breaker box in the laundry room.

"I think the power's out," he said and looked at her.

"I know," Hailey sighed.

"It's like 80 degrees out still, we're going to die," Jay groaned.

Hailey laughed, "You are so dramatic. It'll come back on soon. I'll go check on Drew if you want to grab us some ice water."

"I thought I was being dramatic," Jay smirked and closed the breaker box, "Why would we need ice water?"

"Shut up, just do it," Hailey smiled and walked upstairs.

Jay flipped around in the bed and groaned loudly, "It's been two hours, Hailey."

"Hailey's sleeping," she mumbled and pulled a pillow over her head.

Jay rolled his eyes and sat up, "Hailey."

"Jay, you're being annoying," Hailey snapped and hit him with a pillow, "If you're really that hot, just go downstairs."

"Fine," Jay huffed and got out of bed. The air in the house was starting to get hot despite the howling wind outside, so Jay wiped the sweat from his forehead and decided to check on Drew. He'd been asleep when Hailey looked in on him earlier, so Jay wanted to make sure he stayed that way.

He slipped in the room and quietly walked over to Drew's bed. Through the light shining in, he could see sweat over Drew's head. Jay bit his lip and reached out to mess with Drew's hair. He winced as his hand became wet and carefully peeled the many blankets off of Drew. Drew remained sleeping and only curled up further as Jay dropped the blankets on the floor.

Jay sighed and watched him before going back to his room, "Hailey."

"I'm going to kill you," Hailey said.

"Drew's drenched in sweat," Jay replied and sat on the bed, "Something seems off. Maybe I'm still being dramatic-"

Hailey shook her head and hurried out of the room.

Jay sighed and followed her to Drew's room. He watched Hailey rub Drew's back and look him over. "What do you think?" he asked softly.

Hailey shrugged, "I think he's just really hot. Get a new pair of pajamas for him, maybe that'll help."

Jay nodded and went to the closet.

Drew finally woke up as Hailey moved him onto her lap and mumbled, "What's happening?"

"The air conditioner stopped, so it's pretty warm," Hailey said, "We're gonna try to cool you down."

Drew blinked his eyes open, "The air conditioner stopped?"

"Yeah," Jay walked back over with new pajamas, "Hop up and I'll help you change into some dry clothes."

Drew ran out of the bed straight to the window, "Oh no."

"It's not raining," Hailey walked to him, "Come here, let's get these sweaty clothes off you."

"So you're okay with us dying?" Drew crossed his arms.

Hailey raised his eyebrows, "We're not going to die."

"Tornados are serious," Drew shook his head.

"Bud, come here," Jay said, "Let me help you."

"Detective Jay," Drew moved his hands to his hips, "Torndao!"

"There's not a tornado," Jay chuckled.

"It's not funny," Drew said shakily.

"We know," Hailey whispered and steered him toward Jay, "We know."

Drew stumbled to Jay and grabbed his knees.

Jay held onto him, "You good?"

"I'm scared and-and my head hurts," Drew said, blinking slowly.

Hailey hurried out of the room and Jay started peeling off Drew's pajamas, "We're going to be okay. Not a problem at all."

Drew shivered and wrapped his arms around himself.

Jay felt his forehead and bit his lip, helping Drew into a dry pair of pajamas, "Let's go in my room, all right?"

Drew nodded and held Jay's hand as they walked out.

Hailey was walking up the stairs with a glass of water and a wet washcloth, "Hey, feeling a little better?"

"I don't know," Drew said quietly.

Jay picked him up and carried him the rest of the way to the bed.

Hailey followed him and set the cold washcloth on the back of Drew's neck.

"Who," Drew laughed.

Hailey smiled and passed him the glass of water, "I got lots of ice too."

Drew quickly drank it, spilling some on his shirt.

Jay chuckled and lightly rubbed Drew's back, "Slow down."

Drew shook his head and passed Hailey the empty glass, "It felt good."

"I bet," Hailey smiled, "You were all sweaty and hot."

Drew nodded, "It was gross."

"Do you think you can try to sleep?" Jay asked.

Hailey raised her eyebrows, "Like you were sleeping anyways."

Jay winked and scooted back to the headboard, "Hailey was trying to sleep before."

Drew smiled and crawled back on the bed, "Okay, we can sleep then."

Hailey laughed softly and laid on her side of the bed, "Goodnight you two."

"Goodnight, Mom," Drew smiled and cuddled close to Hailey.

Jay smirked at her; for the first time, he didn't feel the pang of jealousy he was getting used to feeling whenever Drew would say 'Mom'…mostly because he didn't feel like cuddling in this temperature.

Hailey woke with a hot weight against her and sighed as she sat up. The fan was still off and the digital clock was black, so she couldn't help but groan. Maybe Jay was right and they really were going to die in the heat.

Jay walked in the room, "Good morning, Princess Peach. You look hot."

Hailey glared at him, "I am."

Jay chuckled and sat next to her, "Voight called; the power's out at the district, so we have the day off," he peeled a piece of her hair off her forehead.

"Do you know why?" Hailey asked.

Jay smirked, "Why we have the day off? Hailey, dear, the power's out."

Hailey laughed and shoved him off the bed, "You are such an ass."

Jay laughed and kneeled on the ground, "A tree fell last night. 51's been slammed all night."

"That sucks," Hailey breathed, "Working through the night is torture."

"You do love your sleep," Jay chuckled.

"Sleep's hard when you have a sweaty child glued to your side," Hailey mumbled.

"Oh, I bet," Jay smiled.

"Shut it," Hailey rolled her eyes and got out of bed, "I'm going to take a cold shower."

Jay nodded, "Be my guest." He sat on the bed and ran his hand through Drew's hair as Hailey walked in the bathroom.

Drew groaned and swatted his hand away. He opened his eyes, "Detective Jay?"

"Sorry, bud," Jay said softly, "You feeling better?"

Drew sighed and sat up, "Yeah, but I still feel sticky though."

Jay nodded, "It's pretty warm in here since all three of us slept in the bed."

"Can I shower again?" Drew asked.

"Of course, take a cold one," Jay stood for him to get out of the bed.

"Okay," Drew ran out of the room and Jay smiled, running his hand through his own hair.

Kim turned off the hose and set it on the grass, "This will be perfect."

Hailey smiled and pulled her chair over to set her feet in the tiny pool, "Oh yes." She watched Drew and Cara run through the sprinkler, "Thank you for inviting us over."

"Of course, she could use a friend," Kim smiled, "And I think Adam could use a break from playing princess horse."

Hailey laughed, "Do I want to know?"

"I'll show you a video later," Kim laughed with her.

Vanessa walked through the back gate with Kevin, "Anyone want a slushie?"

"Me," Kim held her hand up, "For sure."

Hailey rolled her eyes and laughed, "I'll have one too."

Vanessa smiled and passed them each a slushie, "The gas station was packed with people getting these and ice."

"I can't believe the power's still out," Kim shook her head.

"Last night was miserable," Hailey sighed, "I'm hoping it'll be back on before we go to bed."

"Jay hates the heat, right?" Vanessa asked while sitting and sticking her feet in the pool.

Hailey nodded and glanced behind her where Jay was grilling burgers with Adam and Kevin, "Yeah…I think it's worse at night. He's never directly said it, but I think it reminds him of being in the Rangers and sleeping there. He can never just lay still when it's hot; he's so restless, it drives me insane."

"How was Drew?" Kim asked, "Cara slept through it."

Hailey sighed, "He would have slept through it, but Jay went to check on him and he was soaked in sweat so we woke him up to change and cool down which was for the best, I'm pretty sure he was dehydrated."

Vanessa winced, "That sucks. Kev-"

Kim smirked, "Oh, were you with Kevin last night?"

Hailey laughed softly and sipped her slushie.

Vanessa blushed, "Maybe."

"I'm happy for you," Kim smiled.

Hailey nodded, "I completely agree."

"Thank you," Vanessa said softly, "We'll see what happens."

On the other end of the patio, Jay flipped one of the burgers on the grill, "It'll be special however you do it."

Kevin nodded, "She won't compare it to before."

"I wouldn't do it like before though," Jay added.

"Oh definitely not," Kevin shook his head, "It needs to be mature."

"I mean, I proposed in her bedroom after we spent the night together," Jay shrugged, "I planned on taking her to dinner, but in that moment, I was like I need to marry this woman and can't go another second without her."

Adam nodded, "Thanks, thank you. We'll see what happens. I'm just hoping she doesn't find the ring."

"Hide it somewhere good or keep it locked up," Kevin shrugged, "Doesn't seem too hard."

Jay chuckled, "Just you wait. It's terrifying. Keep it on you at all times."

"Noted," Adam said. He drank his water and watched Drew and Cara take turns jumping over the sprinkler, "I've debated having Cara play a part in it."

"She'd love that," Kevin smiled, "Do that."

"Cara would probably love that too," Jay nodded.

Adam smiled and looked back at them, "She has me wrapped around her finger. We play princess horse everyday and while it does get on my nerves after an hour or so, I love playing with her."

"I kinda want to see princess horse," Kevin laughed.

Jay smirked, "Sounds fun."

Adam shook his head and laughed, "Knock it off. It makes her happy."

"That's all that matters, right?" Jay took all the burgers off the grill and set them on a plate.

"Definitely," Adam said and finished his water, "Cara! Drew! Lunch!"

Cara smiled and ran across the yard. She jumped in Adam's arms, "I'm starving."

Drew was running behind her when he suddenly fell and yelled. He gripped his foot and whimpered, trying to talk. He looked up to see Hailey talking to Vanessa and Kim and Jay closing the grill. His lip wavered as he whispered, "Dad. Dad."

Jay walked to the table with the burgers, "Let's go, ladies. Lunch time."

Drew sniffled and looked at his foot, a small black thing sticking out of it, "Dad," he said again and gasped for breath, "Dad."

"Smells delicious," Hailey smiled and squeezed Jay's hand as she sat down, "I love when you grill."

Drew started crying and rubbed his face with his free hand, "Dad."

Kim nodded, "You're actually really good at it."

Jay laughed, "Compliment?"

"Of course," Kim laughed as well.

"Dad," Drew said louder.

Jay picked grabbed a plate and put a burger on it, "Hails, I've got Drew's plate."

Adam passed him a bottle of water, "You wanted this instead of beer, right?"

Jay nodded, "Thanks."

"Dad!" Drew shouted and cried harder.

Jay's head snapped up, "Drew?"

Hailey jumped out of her seat, "Are you okay?" she ran across the yard to him.

"I want Dad," Drew cried as Hailey sat next to him, "It hurts, it hurts."

Jay stood frozen on the patio staring at Hailey and Drew.

Kevin lightly pushed him, "I'm pretty sure he's talking to you."

Jay couldn't move and watched Hailey wipe Drew's tears.

"Dad!" Drew cried and leaned into Hailey.

"Hey," Adam snapped in front of Jay's face, "Jay, Drew is calling for you."

Jay swallowed and his mouth opened, but nothing came out.

"Jay," Hailey said, clearly annoyed, "We need you!"

"Okay," Kim sighed and stood. She took Jay's hand and walked him over, "What happened?"

"My foot, my foot," Drew whimpered.

Kim nodded and hurried inside.

"Jay!" Hailey smacked his leg, "Down here."

Jay registered what was happening and quickly knelt down next to them, "Let me see, you're okay, I'm here."

Drew cried loudly and reached his hands out.

Jay pulled him onto his lap, "I've got you, you're okay."

Hailey carefully looked at his foot, "Did you step on a bee?"

Drew gasped for breath, "I'm going to die. I'm dying."

"You won't die," Jay rubbed his back and kissed his head.

Kim returned with a bag of ice, "Try this."

"Thank you," Hailey took it from her and held it against the bottom of Drew's foot.

"No, no, ow," Drew whimpered.

"It's okay," Jay whispered, "We'll get it out."

Drew shook his head fast, "Please don't hurt me, please."

"I have tweezers in my purse," Hailey said and stood.

Jay nodded and stood with Drew in his arms. He followed Hailey inside Kim's house to the living room. Sitting on the couch, he wiped Drew's eyes, "You'll be okay. Hailey's going to fix you up."

Drew whined and pressed his face into Jay's shirt.

Hailey quickly got the stinger out of his foot, not quite sure if Drew had noticed or not since he was still crying against Jay.

"Hey, I did it, it's out," Hailey said softly and rubbed Drew's leg, "You're okay."

Drew sniffled and looked at her, "Really?"

Hailey nodded, "Really."

Jay kissed his head, "See? I told you you'd be okay."

Drew nodded and wiped his face. He hugged Jay tightly and slowly calmed down.

Hailey finally relaxed and remembered how Drew had even gotten their attention in the first place. She smiled and sat on the couch next to Jay, "I think you can delete all that data now," she teasingly whispered.

Jay smiled back and held Drew close. He nodded and kissed Drew's head, "I think so too."
