Chapter 16
Dandelionstream stared at Silver.
Thinking she heard her wrong, Dandelionstream asked, "What?"
Silver laughed. "Your expecting kits! I think three, but I can't tell this early."
Dandelionstream squinted. "So that's why the hunger affected me so much."
Silver nodded.
Dandelionstream whirled around. "Don't tell anyone."
Silver tilted her head. "Do you want to tell me who the father is?"
Dandelionstream shook her head no. "I'll be right back."
"Take care." Silver called after her. Silver reminded Dandelionstream of a Thunderclan cat called Dewyshine. She was happy and energetic, but Dewyshine was expecting kits from a cat from Shadowclan. Dandelionstream was pretty sure Silver wasn't expecting kits.
Dandelionstream began trying to find Berrydot in the throng of cats. Dandelionstream finally found her and pulled her aside.
"Let's go on a walk," Dandelionstream said.
When they got outside the cave, Dandelionstream began. "I don't believe I told you about this before, but Oatclaw said that, because he was deputy, we could no longer be mates."
Berrydot stared at her. "Your kidding."
Dandelionstream shook her head, giving Berrydot time to think about that. "Well, now I'm expecting his kits!" She said in a rush."
Berrydot closed her eyes. "This will…complicate things."
"I don't know what to do!" Dandelionstream cried.
Berrydot shook her head. "Do you know for sure who the father is?" She asked.
Dandelionstream nodded. "Oatclaw, but we have to do our journey."
Berrydot thought for a moment. "Let's not tell anyone, but I think we should stay here for a few days."
Dandelionstream agreed and they both went inside the cave.
"Who are you?" Asked a gruff voice.
A gray tabby she-cat with a long scar down her flank and shredded ears looked up at them with mistrust.
"We are just passing by," Berrydot said smoothly. "We'll be out of your fur in a few days."
"What are your names?" The cat growled.
"I'm Berrydot and this is my mother, Dandelionstream."
The scarred cat squinted at them. "My name is Fern."
She flicked her tail at a golden tom with a "mane" around his neck and amber eyes. "That's Falcon. Don't talk to that flea-bag. Ever."
Dandelionstream and Berrydot shuffled away from Fern, heading to a circle of cats that looked pretty normal.
"Ahh, you were talking to Fern I see." A nice tom with a brown pelt and brown eyes. "My name is Mud. Now, the reason she hates Falcon so much is that he left her when she got...disfigured. But it is good advice to stay away from him. He thinks he is better than everyone else and is very arrogant."
Berrydot and Dandelionstream nodded. "Not that the two can stay away from each other, both being Hunters and fighters. But they try."
The sun was setting, and Dandelionstream was trying to think of a way to tell Oatclaw she was expecting his kits. She closed her eyes, deciding Oatclaw could wait, and fell in a fitful sleep.
…
The cherry dream was coming, but Dandelionstream forced it down. She wanted to explore. It took longer than she thought, but the cherry dream went away, and Dandelionstream's spirit stood up and began walking around the cave.
Most cats were sleeping, but Oatclaw was awake, staring out at the mouth of the cave. Berrydot was with him, and Dandelionstream went forward, intrigued by what they were saying.
"I don't know what to do." Oatclaw was saying. "Foxstar is expecting my kits, but I don't love her anymore. I love Dandelionstream!"
"Well," Berrydot said. "It was a bad call to stop meeting her. Really bad."
Oatclaw closed his eyes. "I wish she didn't hate me. I really do. I just want her to know how I feel, even if she doesn't feel the same way."
Dandelionstream brushed pelts with Berrydot, and said in her ear, "Not a word."
Berrydot nodded stiffly. "You should tell her," Oatclaw sighed. "In the morning." Dandelionstream went back to sleep
…
When she woke up, Oatclaw motioned her to come over.
"I love you," he said. "Even if you don't love me. The greatest mistakes of my life were leaving you, and mating with Foxstar. I'm so sorry. Will you forgive me?"
Dandelionstream stared at him, but she wasn't ready to tell him about his kits.
"Maybe someday." when I tell you about my kits. She thought but didn't say so out loud. "You made it worse by mating with Foxstar. If you were truly sorry, you wouldn't have done that."
Oatclaw shook his head sadly and then turned, and walked away.
Okay, that was a short chapter. Or maybe it wasn't. I don't know anymore. Tell me if that was too sappy in the comments.
