Chapter 21: Stir Crazy
Nessie's POV
The next several weeks passed by quickly. I was starting to go stir crazy. My family had refused to let me leave the house for several reasons. First there was my self control around blood. I didn't have much self control. Second was the threat that from Dr. Watson. Third was the threat of the Volturi. According to Alice they already knew about the secret being exposed. They just hadn't decided what their next step was going to be. Fourth was my due date that was rapidly approaching.
So I was under strict orders to stay at home for my safety. So while I understood the reasons for having to stay home that didn't stop my longing to go out again. But over the last several weeks we had definitely grown closer as a family. I loved listening to all the stories they told me about my childhood. A childhood that I still couldn't remember no matter how hard I tried.
I sank bank into my bed and let out a sigh of frustration. "Oh come on Nessie. I can't be that terrible company," Jacob chuckled. It was just him and I today. The others had all gone hunting somewhere up north and would not be back for several hours.
"It's not that your bad company Jake Jake it's just that I'm bored out of my mind,"
"I know you want to go out Ness but you can't. There's too much danger out there and I need you and our baby safe," he said. "You're carrying precious cargo there. Our little Jacob Jr.," I loved the way he smiled when he talked about our baby. It was as if I could feel the love radiating out of him.
"Yeah I guess you're right," I yawned. "Anyway I'm sleepy now. Think I will take a nap,"
"You need your rest," he agreed. "Sleep good,"
I slowly drifted off to sleep. I woke up awhile later when I heard the sound of Jacob snoring. Then an idea hit me like a ton of bricks. Jacob was asleep. The rest of my family was gone hunting for the day. Even if they came home early the sun was shining brightly. That would stop them from going into town to look for me at least until sundown. I could sneak out and come back home tonight. I'd probably get hell for it later on but it would be so worth it to break up the monotony that was staying at home all day.
I ever so carefully and slowly got out of bed and put my shoes on. I got my bag, my phone, and my wallet and walked out the front door without making a single sound. I giggled once I was outside. It wasn't long before I hit the main road and that's when I called for an Uber to come pick me up. I would be much harder to track in a car. Especially when my scent mixed in with that of other passengers before me. I snickered. I was an evil genius.
My first stop was Barnes and Noble. It had been awhile since I'd gotten any new books to read. I browsed through all of the sections taking my time in each of them. I ended up buying a lot of books on how to take care of babies and raise children. Funny I'd never thought I'd be buying books like that in my entire life. When I looked at the time I realized that I'd spent two and a half hours there. I also had several missed calls from Jake. He was going to be pissed later but right now I was enjoying my freedom to much to really care.
My next stop was the Babies R Us in the next town over. My family had already been ordering a lot of stuff that my baby would need once he was born but I wanted to participate in some of the shopping myself. Alice already had a baby shower planned for me this weekend. I shuddered at the thought. I wasn't particularly fond of being the center of attention and I still didn't know who she'd invited.
"Nessie what are you doing here?"
My heart stopped beating until I realized that it was just my sister. Lilly was carrying some baby bottles, clothes, and diapers.
"Same as you I suppose. Shopping for my-"
"Holy hell!" my hand flew to my stomach where my baby was suddenly kicking up a storm. I realized that Lily was rubbing her belly as well.
"Seems she's excited to be around you," she said.
"I could say the same for my baby," I said. "I think he likes being near you two,"
"Then you should come home Ness. We really miss you,"
"You know I can't do that,"
"But why? What happened that made you want to leave home all of a sudden?"
"I can't go home. I'll tell you the truth one day as you deserve to know as well. But not yet. I don't know the right way to tell you,"
"Nessie you're being very cryptic. Okay, fine. Why don't we just go have dinner ans hang out awhile longer at least?"
"That sounds nice," It truly did. I missed my sister.
"What do you want to eat? I'm kind of craving Mexican food,"
My stomach growled. "Sounds good to me,"
"We could meet at the restaurant in half an hour or so,"
"Actually I don't have a car right now. Mind if I hitch a ride with you?"
"Not at all sis,"
The sun was starting to set when we got to the restaurant. I grimaced when I looked at my phone again and saw all the missed calls from every member of my family. There were plenty of voicemails and text messages as well. I was going to be in so much trouble once I got home.
"You okay Ness? You look worried,"
"It's just that, well, I'm sort of breaking the rules right now,"
"What do you mean?"
"I'm not supposed to be out right now,"
"Says who? The Cullens? What kind of right do they have to make rules for you?"
"It's sort of a their house their rules sort of situation right now. But I haven't left the house in awhile and I was getting really bored. I'll deal with them later on though,"
"Or better yet don't go back there," she said before taking a bite of enchilada. "Come back home and they'll have no reason to be mad,"
"Let's talk about something else now," I quickly changed the subject as I ate a piece of my burrito.
So she started to give me the update on everything that was happening at school. "Nobody has seen Amy or her friends for two weeks now,"
"What? Why?"
"Don't really know. There's a lot of stupid rumors going around like they're all trying to hide pregnancies or something. I don't think it's that though. I think it's probably because the police put out a warrant for her arrest. They've finished investigating the drowning incident. They have enough evidence to arrest Amy and charge for her attempted murder,"
"Good,"
"Nessie I really wish you'd come home already. I know you want to avoid the topic but it has to be addressed,"
"and I told you that I'm not coming home. I will tell you the truth. Just not right now,"
"Why do you like the Cullens so much anyway? Everyone's been talking about that video you posted online. You know some people actually believe they're vampires?" she laughed. I froze in fear. "What a crazy assumption to make don't you think?"
"Yeah. Crazy," I could barely breathe.
A sudden, intense, searing pain ripped across my torso. I screamed so loud that the entire restaurant went quiet.
"Ness-"
I collapsed when I tried to get up from the table. The pain was getting worse. It felt like I was being ripped apart from the inside out. I screamed again. People gathered around me and started asking me what was wrong.
"Pain," was all I could say.
"Someone call 911!" I heard a lady shout.
"Nessie what's wrong?!" My sister panicked.
"What's wrong with her?" I kept hearing people ask over and over again.
"I don't know,"
"Don't worry kid the paramedics said they'd be here in less then a minute,"
I was scared. All I could feel was pain. A lot of pain. Something was wrong with my baby. I heard the ambulance pull up outside the restaurant. They rushed in and quickly loaded me on a stretcher and put me in the back of the ambulance. Lily got in the back with me. I'd never seen her look so panicked before.
The doors shut. I screamed again. I heard the sirens start up again. The paramedics started working on me immediately. One put an oxygen mask over my face and the other administered pain medication.
"We don't know what's wrong with the patient. She's in pain. We're trying to stabilize her breathing and her heart rate," I heard one of the paramedics say.
The worst pain I'd ever felt hit me right then and there. I screamed as I felt something rip through my torso. My vision was blurry from the pain. Then I saw something strange. I saw a baby crawl out of my stomach. I heard him cry. My son. My Jacob Jr. He looked at me in wonder and amazement. My beautiful baby boy.
The last thing I saw was him crawling toward my face. Then I lost conciousness.
