"Itona, I'll handle Seo." Nagisa told Itona. Itona frowned, but backed off. Nagisa jumped off the shipping container he was standing on top of and landed in front of Seo. Seo grinned wickedly.
"Oh please, you really think you're threatening? You're so small!" Seo taunted. Nagisa looked at him with a blank look on his face.
"What's the matter? Too small to hear me?" Seo taunted again. Ryu leaned over to Rinka.
"I swear, I can hear his blood level rising." he whispered to Rinka, who nodded.
"This should be simple. Fight until one of you either surrenders or is knocked unconscious." Karasuma explained.
"So, where's your katana?" Seo taunted. Nagisa raised his hand, and Itona tossed the katana next to him. Nagisa caught it by the handle and swung it heavily. The sheath flew off, denting the container next to him. Seo's eyes widened in shock at the sight.
"Bring it." Nagisa challenged. Seo narrowed his eyes and charged. He pulled the katana out of the sheath and swung it at Nagisa, who blocked it with his own katana. They clashed, Nagisa blocking every one of Seo's attacks. Seo was fierce in his onslaught, but Nagisa's technique was overwhelming. Seo, on the other hand, was continuously being cut, and though they were small enough for him to ignore, they built up, causing his flesh around the cuts to throb.
"Is that it!?" Seo snarled, swinging his sword again. Nagisa blocked the hit and let it slide off his blade, causing Seo to stumble, letting Nagisa cut him once again. Seo growled and attacked again. This time, Nagisa dodged by jumping back. Seo tried to follow, only for Nagisa to jump up on top of a crate.
"What's the matter, can't jump this high?" Nagisa taunted.
"Don't look down on me asshole!" Seo growled, climbing up the side of the container. He charged at Nagisa once again.
The difference in skill was clear even to the Virtuous. Seo was attacking furiously, but Nagisa blocked each hit. Seo growled and pulled back his katana, stabbing forward, growling as Nagisa dodged easily. He didn't get a chance to try again, as Nagisa suddenly dropped his sword and kicked Seo in the face multiple times. As Seo fell back, grabbing his face, Nagisa stomped down on the handle of his katana, causing it to flip up. He grabbed it and swung it, knocking the katana from Seo's hand. Seo looked surprised, and dodged Nagisa's next attack. He rushed to his katana and scooped it up, falling back in his stance. Nagisa looked over his stance.
'Not bad. Seo has actually trained huh?' Nagisa should've seen this coming. The Virtuous may have been arrogant, but they weren't stupid. Well, in certain areas at least.
"Come on! I'll take you on!" Seo declared as he charged again. Nagisa ducked under his first swing and blocked his next. Seo kept fighting, swinging his sword in multiple directions. He started becoming faster and faster, but his swings were more wild now, allowing Nagisa to dodge by simply adjusting his body side to side.
'Self-trained, little experience. Not a good combo.' Nagisa noted. He dodged another swing and punched Seo, kicking him in the gut before kicking him in the ribs, sending him flying off the container. Seo looked up to see Nagisa leaping well over his head and landing behind him.
"How do you jump so high!?" he demanded, attacking the tealnette after scrambling to his feet. Nagisa blocked the katana again and pushed him back. They clashed again, this time Nagisa twisted his katana, forcing Seo's out of his hands, sending it clattering to the floor. Nagisa kicked Seo to the ground, pointing his katana at Seo's chest.
"That's twice I disarmed you. Give up." Nagisa said simply. Seo growled and sprang to his feet as he pushed the katana away. Nagisa leaned back to avoid the next punch and kicked Seo rapidly, lifting him in the air. With one final kick, Nagisa sent him flying into another container, denting it and knocking Seo out. All parties winced at the brutal combo. Nagisa sighed happily.
"I was hoping he didn't give up." Nagisa confessed.
"That's two out of five. Next round will be a battle of Sharpshooters." Karasuma said. Rinka stepped up. The masked girl also stepped up. Rinka looked her over. Though her face was covered, Rinka could tell that she was certainly skilled in her department.
"So, what's your name?" Rinka asked.
"Call me Snipe Queen." the masked figure said dismissively. Rinka frowned at the title.
"I'll call you Scope." Rinka said just as dismissively. Scope narrowed her eyes in slight anger.
"Shall we begin?" She stared at Scope in front of her. Scope nodded, but was silent. They each received a silenced rifle with three extra clips and rubber knives for them to use. The rifles were filled with rubber bullets. They also had three targets that were put over their hearts, backs, and the side of their stomachs. Their jobs were to try to hit those targets whether with the bullets or with the knives. Whoever got all three first would win.
"Understand?"
"Yes." Rinka nodded.
"Yeah." Scope said quietly.
"Good. We'll go out into the docks. You each will have three minutes to hide yourselves." Karasuma said. He waved his hand in a signal. The two girls instantly ran off in opposite directions. Their respective groups went to opposite sides of the docks to observe.
Rinka ran onto a crane and quickly scaled it. Reaching the end of the crane's arm, she hooked her legs on the bars, swinging herself upside down. She looked through the scope of her rifle, looking for her opponent. Her eyes widened and she lifted her body up, grunting as she crunched. A bullet whizzed right through where her heart was not a second earlier. She unhooked her legs, falling down.
"Rinka!" She heard Ryu yell in worry. She grabbed the rope and used it to slow her fall down, wrapping her legs around it.
"Phew!" Ryu breathed a sigh of relief.
"Worried about your waifu?" Karma said teasingly. The smile was wiped off by Ryu whipping around and glaring at him.
"Of course I was! That's such a large distance! She could've died!" he hissed, shaking Karma furiously.
"So-o-ory. St-u-pi-id qu-est-tion." Karma grunted as his head was whipped back and forth.
Rinka slid down the rope onto the container on the other end of the rope. Landing on it, she looked through her scope towards where the shot came from, ducking to dodge another bullet. Scope pulled back to dodge Rinka's return fire. She took aim again, only to click her tongue when she saw Rinka flip off the container, hiding amongst the rest.
'She's good.' Scope thought as she jumped off the side of a container onto the top of another one. She scanned the area, only to gasp as a bullet whizzed past her head. She rolled back, falling onto her feet off the container. She looked up and melted into the shadows.
Rinka dashed from container to container, keeping her body low. She pressed up against one container, looking around. The sun had set, leaving only the overlights. Rinka pulled her head back with a slight yelp as another bullet whizzed by.
"Your reaction time is incredible. You are an interesting opponent." Scope's voice echoed out through the docks. Rinka narrowed in on her voice and quickly shot back. It was quiet for a minute. Rinka hesitated, but closed her eyes. Slowly, everything began to fade. She focused carefully, but soon began to feel something.
"What's she doing?" Karma asked as he looked through his night vision binoculars. Nagisa looked through his own pair.
"Sensing Scope's consciousness." Nagisa guessed.
"Oh, okay." Karma and the others were silent. Before whipping around to stare at Nagisa.
"Wait, what!? Isn't that your technique!?"
"Yeah, so what? She asked me to teach her. So I taught her."
"Why didn't you teach us? Don't you dare say-"
"You didn't ask."
"Damn it Nagisa!" Nagisa allowed himself a slight laugh before focusing himself. He heard two slight buzzes emanating from the docks. Both were steady sounds.
'I can sense people's consciousnesses as buzzes that I can hear. But Hayami is different.'
Rinka continued to concentrate. Soon, the feeling became more pronounced, letting her pinpoint Scope's location. Her eyes snapped open, and she shot to her right. Scope gasped as the target over her heart was shot. She scowled under her mask as Rinka charged towards her, shooting as she continued to get close. Scope dodged the bullets the best she could, but got hit. Even though they were rubber bullets, they hurt a lot. She jumped to the side, off of the container. She winced from the landing, having rushed. She looked up only to gasp at the sight of Rinka charging on top of her. She tackled her masked opponent, sending them tumbling around. They fell off the docks and into the water with a splash.
Rinka quickly flipped around and looked around for Scope. She frowned when she saw that it looked like she had disappeared. She swam to the surface and looked around for a ladder. Grabbing it, she climbed back up to solid ground. She quickly rolled to the side to avoid another bullet. She glared up at Scope, who continued to fire down at her, forcing her to dodge. Scope clicked her tongue when her rifle made clicking sounds indicating that she needed to reload. She moved back as more bullets whizzed by her.
"Man, Scope is really good. They seem even." Karma whistled.
"Hayami is at a slight disadvantage." Nagisa shook his head.
"How so?"
"Scope has a way to instantly hide herself when battling. Hayami has a way to sense where her opponents are. The problem is the fact that Hayami needs to focus for a certain period of time where-as Scope can do so instantly." Nagisa explained.
"I guess she's gonna have to rely on her creativity then." Karma said. Ryu was silent, watching Scope carefully.
"Why the hell are these two taking so long!? Just shoot!" Koyama complained. The Virtuous were standing on their side of the docks. Koyama and Seo were getting impatient as the two sharpshooters were now silent and carefully maneuvering around the containers. The Four were oblivious of the fact that their goons were talking to each other in the background.
Meanwhile, Rinka was searching for Scope's consciousness again. Her eyes were closed, but her other senses were heightened. Sensing Scope to her right, she pointed her rifle and fired. Scope dodged and shot back. Rinka quickly ducked behind another container and checked her clip. She moved out of the container's shadow and pointed her gun at Scope, only to realize that Scope had already moved away from her previous location. She clicked her tongue at this and began walking forward. Suddenly, Scope swooped in out of nowhere, surprising Rinka. Scope managed to knock Rinka off balance with a kick.
"Damn!" Rinka cursed as she pulled out her knife just as Scope pulled out hers. They clashed for a while, stabbing and slashing at each other. Rinka cursed again as Scope's knife managed to hit her target on her side. She grappled with Scope, trying to get her into an armlock. They pushed each other away and shot each other. As they were point blank, both hit each other, causing the two to hiss in pain. Scope stumbled back, while Rinka's feet got tangled causing her to fall with her back to Scope. Scope recovered quickly and shot again, shooting the target on Rinka's back, causing her to yelp in pain. She quickly ran away, dodging Rinka's responding shots.
"Two targets down in less than three minutes. This Scope person is pretty good." Karma remarked.
"Nagisa. Do you think Rinka can win?" Itona asked Nagisa.
"She can. I know it." Ryu said determinedly.
"She may be at a disadvantage, but she's still pretty even. She might be able to get that win." Nagisa mused.
'I got two of her targets. However, this isn't as big of an advantage as one would think.' Scope thought carefully. 'If this was a real fight, she would've won already. She shot me on the target over my heart amidst the dark, so easily too.'
'If I want to win, I'm going to have to be careful.' Rinka thought to herself. With only one target left, it would be hard for her to win. She was going to have to take her time. Scanning the area, she tensed when Scope stepped under a light, hands raised.
"That's enough. I forfeit." Scope announced. Rinka stared at her in shock. She wasn't the only one. The Virtuous began making their way down to the sniper, the HC also making their way down.
"Hey!" Seo growled as he stomped up to Scope. He grabbed her by the shirt. "What the hell do you mean you forfeit!? You were winning!"
"No, I wasn't. This was a sharpshooting competition. If we were to use real bullets, she would've won a long time ago. And as snipers, our skills are determined through our skill at long range. I only got her two targets at close range. I may have been winning the battle, but she was winning the war." Scope said. She turned to Rinka, who walked down to join them and heard her explanation.
"In that case, HC are the victors." Karasuma said. "As per the agreement, the Virtuous will forfeit their resources and no longer bother the HC. Do you acknowledge?" the Virtuous were unhappy about it, but nodded in understanding. They made to leave, but Ren and Araki didn't move behind.
"Hey Ren! Araki! Aren't you two coming!?" Ren shook his head.
"I, uh, kinda want to talk to these guys for a bit. You guys go ahead to the hotel. Get what you want, on me." Ren told them.
"I kinda want to talk to them as well. Don't wait up." Araki agreed.
"Tch! Fine. Talk to these losers." Seo growled, stomping away. Koyama followed, leaving Araki and Ren behind.
"We'll leave the rest to you. Good job. You all came a long way." Karasuma nodded in acknowledgement. He and his group left as well. Scope put a hand on Rinka's shoulder, catching her attention.
"Don't think this is over though. This is a challenge." Scope said.
"A challenge?"
"Yeah. The only reason why I joined the, Virtuous, was to scope them out. I heard them boast of their skill, and yet from what I've seen, they are completely mediocre." Scope said with a wave of her hand. Ren and Araki winced. They did think they were good, but this competition, meant to humiliate the HC, only served to teach them that they were the inferior. It was too much like the pole toppling contest in Kunugigaoka.
"But you, you guys are the real deal. I can tell. Even the ones who didn't do much, you have a special aura around you that reveals your true abilities." Scope pointed at the members of the HC.
"So, are you challenging us to something?" Karma guessed. Scope shook her head.
"Something like this, we need a better battleground." she reached into her jacket and pulled out an envelope. She handed it to Nagisa, who opened it and looked at the paper. Ryu looked over Nagisa's shoulder.
"A bounty hunting tournament?"
"Yep. Somebody hired ten bounty hunters, including me, to fight each other. Six of us were given the option to choose some other bounty hunters to join in." Scope's eyes were the only things on her face visible, but they were filled with slight amusement.
"Most of them chose to go for opponents that are easy to beat, but I want it to be fun. Between the Virtuous and the Hunter Classroom, it's pretty obvious who I'm going to pick." she continued.
"And why would anyone want to be gladiators? What's the prize?" Karma interrogated. Scope's mask shifted as she smiled underneath.
"How about 800 million?" she asked slyly. Ryu froze.
'800!?' he thought. Even after removing the portions meant for spending, college, school, utilities, and necessities, that would still leave him with enough yen to pay off at least a third of the debt!
"Well, in that case, there's no reason for us to disagree. We accept." Karma said, stepping up.
"Good." Scope said. She looked at Rinka. "Looking forward to our rematch." Rinka nodded. She may have won the war, but she didn't do so in the way she wanted.
"I guess I'll see you there Scope."
"My name is Vizio."
"Wait, didn't you want to be called Snipe Queen?"
"My name is Vizio. Yeah, it's weird."
"My name is Karma."
"Fair enough."
-Line Break-
"Man, just when we were finished with that business with the Virtuous, we ended up with another challenge." Karma yawned as he leaned back. Isogai and the other members aside from the ones who were at the docks were with him and Ryu in the headquarters. Ryu looked down at the pistol he was fiddling with.
"Sorry. I know you guys accepted because of me."
"Don't worry about it." Karma said dismissively. "The Virtuous were so disappointing! I was expecting a real challenge, yet they were all talk."
"Well, Ren and Araki might be of some challenge in the future." Isogai commented. After they accepted the tournament challenge, they were approached by Ren and Araki who asked to be trained by the HC. While they were skeptical at first, Nagisa realized that they weren't lying when they said they wanted to improve as bounty hunters. He convinced them to give the two a chance, though Karma was going to watch them very carefully.
"Yeah, maybe." Karma sighed. Ryu sighed and walked away from the group.
"Where are you going, Chiba?" Yada asked.
"I'm going to go check the weapons. I'll be back." he said. Karma watched him as he left.
'Fifteen different groups of bounty hunters? This is going to be a little tough. And unlike the Virtuous, they're going to be a little tough to beat, if not extremely tough.' Ryu thought to himself. This was going to be extremely different from what they were used to. He grabbed the door knob for the weapons room, but paused. He heard a noise coming from the game room. He looked at the door, and slowly walked over to it, pulling out his pistol.
"What happened?" a voice asked from inside the room. It was slightly familiar.
"I don't know. This machine must've malfunctioned in some way. At least we know it works." another answered. Ryu kicked open the door and pointed his pistol at the figures he saw.
"Hands up! Now!" he demanded. John and the pregnant Toka put their hands up, startled.
"John?"
"Yeah?"
"You're sleeping on the couch."
