Here's the last goodbye chapter! I'm sorry it took so long to update, my computer broke and I just was able to get a new one. I hope you enjoy the chapter and make sure to leave a review!
Goodbyes Pt. 4
Jona Skinner, 16, D10 Male
"So you're really leaving," Kian said as he closed the door.
"Who let you in?" I asked, ignoring his question.
"The peacekeeper out front," he said, rolling his eyes. "I told them I was your friend."
"But you're not," I retorted. "I thought that the reaping was going to be the last time I'd be forced to see your ugly face for a while."
Kian rolled his eyes again, not believing me. He wasn't smart at all. He believed everyone had good in them, somewhere. It got on my nerves, and was honestly one of the reasons I was so happy to be rid of him, and least for a few weeks. The second I got back, he'd be at my doorstep, begging for me to let him in. that is, if he wasn't dead.
"You don't really mean that," he said confidently. "You know that you'll miss me, even if you don't want to admit it."
I started laughing. Kian stood there, confused. "Why are you laughing?"
"Because you are truly the dumbest person I know," I said in between laughs. Still, he looked confused. "I won't miss you, I know that for a fact. There's not much to like about you. There's no way that you're going to have any food while I'm gone. You rely on me for everything, and with me gone, you're going to have trouble living. I only kept you around because sometimes you would get food, and when you're on the streets, two people is better than one. Remember that. Now get the hell out of here."
Kian made no move to leave. The Peacekeeper grabbed him, and he let himself be dragged out of the room. I let myself smile. I was finally rid of him, and I was going to the Games. I had been planning it since the reaping the year before, and now all I needed to do was win. And that wouldn't be too difficult.
Terracotta Yale, 15, D10 Female
I had been reaped. The one thing I feared the most had happened. I didn't know how I had been reaped. My name was only in the bowl once and there were plenty of kids with their names in it multiple times. The odds of me getting reaped were extremely slow, yet there I was, sitting in the Justice Building, waiting for my family and friends to come say goodbye to me. Something that I thought I would never have to do.
"Terra!" my grandmother shrieked as she walked as fast as she could into the room. That was the fastest I had seen her move in years. She stopped to catch her breath, then pulled me into a hug. "You're going to be okay. You are the strongest girl I know. You get that from your mother. She was so strong."
"I know," I said. I could hear that she was starting to cry. My grandfather just stood in the back, not knowing what to do. After what seemed like hours, he spoke.
"Come back to us, Terra. I know that you can."
"Time's up," the Peacekeeper said, completely devoid of emotion.
"No!" my grandmother yelled as the Peacekeeper pulled her off of me and out of the room. I didn't move. Next Kitten and Bush came in. they immediately pulled me into a hug as well. We stood there for a minute before I spoke. "Take care of my grandparents. If I die, they won't know what to do. Just make sure that they continue living their lives, even if mine ends."
"Okay," Kitten said, letting out a sob. "But that won't be a problem because you're coming back."
"Right," I said, without much conviction. "I'm going to come back.
Yatsuhasi Howson, 18, D11 Male
"Open your eyes!" Jess hissed as she walked into the room. I was sitting on the floor meditating. Right then, it was like Jess was the one that had been reaped. She was pacing around the tiny room, stressing about how I needed to come home, and I was sitting on the floor, completely calm.
"Maybe it's a good thing I got reaped," I said quietly. Jess stopped pacing and stared at me.
"What?"
"I said, maybe it's a good thing I was reaped," I stated simply. "I won't be able to hurt anyone again if I'm dead."
"Yatsu, don't say that!" Jess exclaimed. She marched over towards me and put her hands on her hips. "You are an amazing young man, who does deserve to live. Your past mistakes shouldn't tell everyone who you are. Just because you did one stupid thing doesn't mean that one thing defines you. You deserve to live."
"Thank you for saying that," I said. "But I don't exactly feel the same. That one stupid mistake does define me. From that moment, I was a monster. And mother and father still believe that. So yes, my past mistakes do define me. Maybe if I sacrifice myself for someone in the Games, mother and father will see, and will be able to forgive me. They have to know that I feel terrible, and that I'm not always a terrible person, and I guess this is the way it will happen.
"But I need you here," Jess said, tears in her eyes.
"You will learn to live without me. I know that without me holding you back, you will accomplish great things. Well, as great as you can in District 11."
"Time's up."
"Goodbye Jess," I said. "I love you"
"I love you too, Yatsu," Jess said. "Remember that, always."
Anya Marshall, 17, D11 Female
The second they left me in that room in the Justice Building, I was pacing around. There wasn't much space, and there was the one Peacekeeper that they assigned to me, but I made it work. Walking in circles sort of calmed me. When I was walking away from the door, Mikayla burst into the room, immediately capturing me in a hug. I turned around and returned it. She was crying, and it made me feel terrible, knowing that I was the cause of it.
"Don't cry," I said. "There's nothing either of us can do about it, and I want to make the most of our time together. Especially since this is probably the last time that I'll see you."
She lifted her head off of my shoulder and looked me straight in the eyes. "Don't say that. Somewhere within you, you have the strength to win the Games. Just find a good ally, that should help you stay alive, at the beginning at least. And I know that you'll make the most of your training. Don't say that this is the last time we'll see each other, because I know that it won't be."
I immediately teared up, then furiously wiped my tears away. "Don't hold onto a false hope, Mikayla. There's no way that I'll win. There are people who have been training their entire life for this, and I'm going to have three days. Those aren't great odds."
"Your time's up."
"I love you Anya," Mikayla said as she was escorted out.
"I love you too."
Mist Crawley, 12, D12 Male
"Hey buddy," my dad said as he rolled into the room. I immediately went over and hugged as best as I could with him being in a wheelchair and started crying. "Don't start crying. You need to take advantage of these last few minutes with us."
I wiped away my tears. My dad was right. Now wasn't the time to cry. I looked around, taking in my family. My mom, who looked barely conscious, my dad in his wheelchair, Kalya looking extremely confused.
"Okay," I said quietly.
"Learn survival skills during your training. And find good allies. That, at least, should help you survive."
"Survival skills and allies," I said, nodding. "Okay. I'll remember that."
"Good," he said. "Know that I'm always going to believe in you, even when things don't look so good."
"Thank you dad," I said, on the edge of tears again. "You're the best."
"I know," he said, grinning.
"Your time is up."
"Bye, Mist," Dad said. "I love you."
"Love you too, Dad."
Laila Violet, 16, D12 Female
"Why are you dressed like that?" my mother snapped as she came into the room, Aunt Misty, Uncle Josiah, and Emma right behind her.
"It's the way I like to dress," I snapped back at her.
"Well don't do it," she said. "It'll make boys think they can do whatever they want with you."
"Well, maybe I'm okay with that!" I exclaimed. "I'm actually careful, unlike you! And I'm older than you were when you had me so are you really in a good position to criticize me?"
"Yes!" she yelled. "I learned from my mistakes and tried to teach you well, so that you don't get pregnant as a teenager!"
"Well, it doesn't matter!" I yelled. "I'm going to die anyway! It's not like it matters anymore!"
My mom grew silent at this.
"Leave, Mom," I said simply. "I want to say goodbye to everyone else."
She turned around and left, without even saying goodbye. My aunt and uncle gave me a quick hug and followed, leaving me with Emma.
"She's going to regret not saying goodbye to you, you know," she said, sighing.
"Just like she regrets having me," I retorted.
"No she doesn't," Emma said. "She just wasn't ready for you. But she still loves you."
"I know," I said. "Fine. Tell her that I love her. Please. Since she'll never see me again."
"Okay," Emma said, brightening a little. "And don't say that. People from District 12 do win sometimes."
"Yeah, like I'd be able to win," I scoffed. "There's no way."
"You don't know that," Emma said.
"Time's up," the Peacekeeper said, moving towards Emma.
"I love you, Laila. You've been a good big sister. Even though you're not actually."
"And you've been a good little sister. Even though you're my cousin."
"Please come home."
