The Last Battle

Chapter XIX

~ Azarath ~

Raven paced back and forth, the summoning array laid out before her, her thoughts awhirl at the decision looming before her. 'Why does Mom insist on me not meeting my father? She says he's dangerous, but she must have loved him once, right?'

She turned to look out among the people who had taken her and her mother in, treated them like family, yet she felt only loneliness as she watched children study and train with both their parents. Her pain was worst when she saw families just enjoying the beauty of the Azarath landscape, completely at peace with their lives, full of joy and happiness. "Why doesn't Mom want us to have that with my father? I have to know."

Moving into the shadow cast by the midday sun, she entered the summoning array, sat down, and began to chant…

After reading the following events – Trigon massacring the planet of Azarath, Raven running to Earth, joining the Titans, and the rest – Starfire, Nightwing, and Blue Beetle sat there in silence, processing how little they seemed to recall. So much of this had been lost, and though they remembered bits and pieces of this story that they were seemingly a part of, there was much more that they had never known about her.

They had also learned one important thing from this retelling; Damian had been in her thoughts more and more before the day Trigon had intruded upon their dimension. Clearly there was something Damian had either neglected to mention or had simply been forced to forget. And though there were more pages beyond that one event, the text became unreadable past the fight with Trigon, and they were left to wonder what else had happened to them.

"First things first," Starfire began, "we need to find Damian, and keep an eye on him. Thank you very much for letting us read this book." She turned to the old man, bowing slightly in thanks while Nightwing and Blue Beetle, stood up, ready to get on their way.

"Oh, it was nothing," the old man said, waving his hand slightly, "Of course, you know that this will be the only chance you have to read the pages of another one's life. I have only allowed you to do so because there are corrections to your reality that you must make yourself. Those of us with the power to change reality are not permitted from correcting errors unfortunately. And even then, I only allowed you to see what she would have allowed you to know in the natural course of events."

Nightwing stood there with a curious expression, before asking, "But how would you know what she would have told us or kept from us?"

Jaime looked similarly confused, "Yeah, why wouldn't she share anything with the rest of the team, her amigos?"

The old man's expression changed drastically to a serious scowl, "Because only the one who knows her mind as well as their own would be capable of sharing in her pain, her trauma, and her love. But that is where I must leave your knowledge, it is time you go correct the mistake that was made on your behalf."

Before any of them could get another word in, the old man waved his hand, and their view was shifted again, the stars, shelves, and visions of space stretched until a bright light filled their vision, blinding them temporarily.

When they were able to open their eyes, they were surprised to see several plateaus before them, dotting a desert landscape that stretched into the horizon.

Beast Boy had begun to pace back and forth not long after Jinx let slip Wonder Girl's name, and had not stopped for a couple hours, though he had been unusually quiet during the whole thing. Even after Wonder Girl had woken up, and asked Jinx what had happened, Beast Boy had just kept walking, occasionally scratching his head, or stopping with this eureka-like expression before shaking his head and returning to pacing.

Jinx had finally had enough; she stood up and dusted herself off, before walking over to stand in Beast Boy's path. She cocked back her arm, and swung as hard as she could, clocking him so fiercely that he flew back a couple feet before hitting the ground roughly. He rubbed his cheek where Jinx had landed a solid hit, "What the heck did you do that for?!"

"Because you were annoying me," she walked over, leaning forward to glare down at him, "Do I need another reason. Just sit down and maybe I'll tell you how I know her name."

Beast Boy walked over to the other side of the narrow alley and sat down against the wall, with a slight scowl draped across his features.

"So, the only reason I know her name is because I got tired of just calling her Wonder Girl, and I asked her what her name was." After completing what in her mind was a simple story, Jinx walked over and sat back down next to Donna, letting her lean her head against her shoulder.

"… That's it?!" Beast Boy had obviously been hoping for a much juicier story but had been given such a letdown. "I thought you were gonna say something about how she saved your life or how you were secretly dating or something!"

Jinx had to fight the blush building on her face, even when Donna piped up, "Come on Garfield, stop teasing Jinx. She just asked me one day, and I told her, that's all."

Garfield just roughed up his hair, trying to figure out what else could have happened, despite being told the actual events. His mind was awhirl with conspiracies to hide what had actually happened between Jinx and Donna, ignoring the weird looks that they were giving him.

~ Titans Tower ~

Damian had found the bike in the garage sporting the light coating of dust from his earlier jaunt, but not before spending nearly an hour raging at the apparent futility of his previous journey. The communicator he had found was tracking a particular entity in the Northern region of India, and his instincts were telling him that it was tracking Raven. Looking around the garage, he saw the Titan's version of the Batwing, which Beast Boy had dubbed the 'T-Ship'.

After climbing in and firing up the engines, he sat there for a short while, just reorganizing his emotions before he heard a familiar voice through the ship's comm, "Duuuude! Where the hell have you been?!"
