Chapter 17: Duty
It's 7 AM in the morning, the alarm goes off as Baez and Danny wake up, Baez went to take a shower while Danny woke up Sean for school, then Baez got dressed for day tour and the first day with a new partner.
"Hey." Danny said.
"Morning." Baez answered.
"First day back." Danny said with a smile.
"Yep, and with not my favorite partner." Baez grinned.
"We are still partners tho somehow." Danny smiled while he kissed her.
"Easy, I gotta go." Baez said with a chuckle.
"Okay, well I got night tour today so we'll see eachother later." Danny said.
"Okay, I am gonna drop off Sean at school, talk to you later." Baez said, as she clipped her badge and adjusted her holster
"Love you." Danny said.
"Love you too." Baez said, and her with Sean got in the car.
"I need advice." Sean said blushed in the car.
"What is it?" Baez said as she started up the engine.
"I want to ask a girl out and I need pointers." Sean said, embarrassed.
"Wow, what's her name?" Baez said, smiling.
"Liz." Sean said quietly.
"Well girls don't like for guys to not be direct, so you just have to ask her." Baez said.
"Okay." Sean said as they the school.
"Have a good day at school." Baez said.
"Thanks, bye." Sean said, and he went inside as Baez went to the Precinct. She arrived to the Precinct and went up to the Squad there she went into the CO's office.
"Morning, boss." Baez said.
"Detective Baez, come in." The CO said, putting some files aside.
"Who's my new partner?" Baez asked.
"Detective 3rd Grade Jacob Sterling." The CO said looking at her.
"Boss with a 3rd Grade Detective? C'mon." Baez was a bit irritiated.
"It's either him or you get desk duty." The CO smiled.
"I'll take it." Baez said.
"Great, there he comes." The CO said as the Detective went in.
"Detective Sterling, meet your partner, Detective Baez." The CO introduced them and continued "You got a drive-by, luckily the target isn't likely, he's at St. Victor's." The CO finished, giving Baez the file.
"Copy, boss." Baez asked and both detectives walked.
"Listen, Detective." Baez said, stopping.
"Yes, Ma'am?" The Detective said.
"Call me Baez or Maria. Secondly, I drive." Baez said as she walked.
"Copy that." Sterling said as they went down to the front of the Precinct and got in their car, driving off to St. Victors, as they arrived they located the room the individual who was shot was in and they went in.
"Sir, I am Detective Baez this is Detective Sterling, NYPD." Baez said, showing her shield.
"What you want?" The man said.
"I understand you were shot earlier today." Baez said.
"Yeah, and?" The man answered.
"You know who shot you?" Baez asked.
"I ain't a snitch, lady cop." The man answered.
"It's detective." Sterling said.
"Whatever, man." He said.
"You're in a gang, Mr. Hernandez?" Baez asked.
"None of your business." The man said.
"Okay, thank you for your time." Baez said, and both detectives exited the room.
"Sterling, tell the officers on the scene to canvass the area and collect any CCTV footage within a 1 mile radius, forthwith." Baez said.
"Copy." Sterling said, and took out his phone as they got in the car and drove off to the Precinct.
While Baez was doing some paperwork, Sterling came to their desk with a file.
"We got something." Sterling said.
"What is it?" Baez asked.
"A witness saw a black car with 2 subjects inside coming up to our vic and then shots were fired." Sterling said, giving her a file.
"We got a plate?" Baez asked. looking at the file.
"Not from the witness, but from a traffic camera." Sterling informed her.
"Who does it come back to?" Baez asked.
"James Reynolds. Known gang member with two priors for narcotics." Sterling said.
"Okay, call Gang Unit, ask for information on him and also check on the registered address on the file." Baez said.
"Copy." Sterling said, leaving.
"And Sterling." Baez said.
"Yeah?" Sterling turned around.
"Good work." Baez said, and Sterling left.
Some hours went by, and the tour was over, Baez picked her things up and she ran into Sterling while she was leaving.
"Anything came up?" Baez asked.
"Nope." Sterling said.
"Alright, I'll buy you a beer, walk with me." Baez said.
"Thanks." Sterling answered.
"So, why are you a cop?" Baez asked.
"I was in the Army, did two tours in Afghanistan but it was hard for me in the military and then after." Sterling said as they got inside the bar and sat down.
"I understand after, but why in the military?" Baez asked as they ordered beers.
"I am gay, and you know." Sterling said, drinking beer.
"Oh, that takes guts." Baez said.
"What about you?" Sterling asked.
"Well I came from a rough neighborhood, and I decided to become a cop." Baez said.
"You dating anyone?" Sterling asked.
"Yeah, another cop." Baez said.
"Wow." Sterling was surprised.
"What about you?" Baez asked as she finished her beer.
"Nope, nothing." Sterling said, finishing his beer.
"Well I have to go home." Baez said.
"Alright, I'll see ya tomorrow." Sterling said.
"Alright bye." Baez said, then she left the bar and went in her car driving to the house, as she arrived she saw Danny getting ready to leave.
"Hey." Baez said.
"Hey, I am about to go." Danny said.
"Okay, well I won't keep you waiting." Baez said and they kissed.
"Okay bye." Danny said.
"Bye." Baez answered and she went up to Sean's room and knocked on the door.
"Come in!" Sean shouted.
"Hey, how did it go?" Baez asked.
"She said yes." Sean said with a smile.
"Yes!" Baez almost shouted.
"Now, I gotta get a date and time set up and where to go." Sean said.
"I know a diner in Lower Manhattan at 9th Ave, you can go there tomorrow night." Baez said.
"Great, thanks." Sean said.
"No problem." Baez said and continued "It's late, go to bed."
"Okay, good night." Sean said.
"Good night." Baez said, as she closed his door and went to her room, she was so tired that she went to sleep.
