Mary was restless throughout the night. She continued to toss around through the night. She was able to get a couple of hours here and there but nothing substantial. She spent the majority of her time thinking about what she could have possibly been missing. The impression she of John she received from the boys and Emily were starkly different from her memories. She turned around to face the clock between the beds. She watched the red numbers blink until it was an acceptable time to wake up based on the agreed meet time.
Mary quickly changed into a comfortable outfit for today, especially if they were going to be facing a witch. She walked out of the room and toward the one next door. Unlike the previous day, the lights were on signaling that the occupants were awake. She knocked firmly on the door until it opened. Once again, it was Sam who greeted her at the door.
"Mom, what are you doing here? he asked. "I thought we were meeting in an hour."
"We need to talk," she said forcing her way into the room.
When she walked in, she saw Castiel and Dean in their own world with Dean trying to talk to the baby while Cas told him the baby hadn't developed ears yet. As she walked closer, he felt her presence in the room, and Dean popped off the bed.
"What's going on?" he asked her.
"You two kept some things from me, and I want answers."
"What were we keeping from you?" Sam asked.
"Some information about your father," she told the two.
They responded with panic looks on their faces. They looked at each other, having a silent conversation between themselves.
"I think I deserve the truth," Mary pleased with them.
"What do you want to know?" Dean asked her with a sign.
"What was John like when I died? He's not the person I remember."
"After you died," Dean started. "Dad became hellbent on revenge, and trained us to do the same as soon as he could."
"We bounced around from town to town every couple of weeks or so," Sam continued. "My first memories are of motel rooms and Dean being the only one there most of the time."
"To him, hunting was the only thing he had to do. It was my job to take care of Sammy."
"When I decided to go to college, all hell broke loose. It meant that I didn't want to catch the demon who killed you, and Dad kicked me out of his life."
"So, he stopped being a dad as soon as I died," Mary said dejectedly and looked slightly down. Over her head, Sam and Dean looked at each other once again and wondered if they should tell her the one thing they didn't want her to know.
"There's one more thing," Dean said awkwardly.
"How could this get any worse?" Mary asked, looking at the two again.
"Dean had another child," Sam told her.
"So he moved on. I don't see the problem with that."
"We didn't know about him until after he died," Dean explained.
"Apparently Dad was a lot more active in his life," Sam said bitterly. "They would go to baseball games together."
"So, he would leave the two of you behind and play house with someone else?" Mary asked the two with anger in her voice. Her fingernails scratched her palms as her fists got tighter and tighter the more she thought about it. She could tell that her sons were trying to tell her things gently and wasn't telling her completely everything. "There's something else, isn't there?"
"I don't know what you mean," Sam said in confusion.
"John said something about how he died for you, Dean. Later on, he said he learned something from that experience. What's your take on that?"
Dean took in a deep breath. "We just had an incident with old Yellow Eyes. Dad made a deal with him to figure out more information as to what was going on and passed it along to me before he died."
"What did he tell you?" Mary asked insistently.
"That... I had to kill Sammy."
Mary felt her jaw drop. She couldn't comprehend what was going on. She dropped onto the bed closest to her not able to keep herself standing for any longer. She was trying to wrap her head around the thought, but quite couldn't. "Why would he say something like that?"
"It was to stop the apocalypse," Sam offered her.
"Yeah, I heard something about that," Mary told them.
"You did?" Dean asked her before turning to Cas. "What were you two talking about yesterday?"
"Your mother asked me questions, of which I answered," Cas informed him. "Then, we got ice cream before walking through the city."
"You two got ice cream?" Sam asked the two of them with a chuckle.
"I'm allowed to spoil my grandchild," Mary snapped out of her thoughts. "There's nothing you can do to stop me."
Sam and Dean burst out in laughter. After the tense conversation they had, they weren't expecting an outburst like that. Soon, they compressed their laughter into slight chuckles.
"We won't stop you," Dean informed her.
"How are you taking what we told you?" Sam asked her.
"I'm pissed beyond belief," Mary told them. "I wish I could change time, but something tells me that that doesn't go so well, so we can only go forward. Kinda wish I wasn't sharing a room with him anymore."
"Even though he's your husband?" Dean asked her.
"Yeah, I'm fairly certain that the cupid's stopped working when I died."
"You know about that?" Sam asked her with shock.
It was one of the questions I had," she told him bluntly.
Sam and Dean gave her a strange look before shrugging it off. They both went back to what they were doing before: Dean talking to Cas' stomach while Sam continued to look at something on the computer. It was a nice murmur of noise in the room. Mary laid down and closed her eyes for a bit, trying to get a little rest before John would be coming over to the room. Now that she had answers, her mind had quieted a lot.
Mary quickly opened her eyes when she heard banging on the door. She sat up from her position trying to get her bearings. Sam was engrossed in whatever he was looking at, while Dean moved away from Cas to answer the door.
As soon as the door was slightly open, John pushed his way into the room. "I thought I would find you all in here," he said smoothly while surveying the room, letting his eyes linger on Castiel a bit.
"Where else would we be?" Sam asked him with a slight snark.
"I don't know. Getting coffee like you did yesterday," John retorted.
"Anyways," Dean interrupted, "It's about time for us to go. Can we not argue about this now?"
"I still don't get why we're trusting those witches," John stated. "We should just shake them for information."
Sam sighed in response. "One: they have names. Two: they've been helping us. Three: they're not evil in any way; Cas would have been able to tell. At this point, you just need to deal with it."
John grumbled under his breath as he didn't have a response to give. There was nothing definite that he could say. He also wasn't able to go out last night to continue is searching because Mary was tossing and turning all night. He was pretty sure that she never went to sleep and would have known that he left the room. Instead of answering, he walked out of the room and went over to the Impala and waited for everyone else to join him. It took a couple of minutes, but they soon came outside. He was already lurking around the passenger door, so Sam had a slight bitch-face as they were walking over. There would be no point in arguing, although Sam wanted to not be cramped in the back seat.
Soon enough, but not soon enough in Sam's opinion, they arrived at the store. There was a closed sign on the door, but after pushing on the door, they realized that it was unlocked. They all walked in the store the door and up to the counter. Emily was at the counter, reading a book with supplies in front of her. When she saw then approach from the corner of her eye, she greeted them.
"Hey, guys. I found some more protective charms, so I'm making some just in case. Celine is in the back boiling water, so she'll be back soon."
"You wouldn't by any chance have coffee?" Dean asked the girl.
"No, sorry. The baby doesn't like the smell, so it's not allowed in the shop right now."
"I have highly caffeinated tea though," Celine said as she walked from the back with an electric kettle. "It's going to have to do, unfortunately."
Celine placed the kettle in the middle of the counter before going to some cabinets behind her. She took out a jar of sugar and a container and put them on the surface before going back to grab a large selection of mugs. She opened the container and said, "Have at it." Feeling John's wariness for what she was offering, she turned toward him with a fake smile. "Don't worry. I bought these from the store. They're individually packaged and everything."
Sam started coughing under his breath to hide his laugh while Dean turned his back toward everyone and tried to hide his laughter. Mary, on the other hand, couldn't help but let a few giggles escape her. She was the first one to rummage through the container and selected Earl Grey for its high caffeine content. She opened the package, dumped a large portion of sugar into a cup, and poured the hot water. She blew into the cup and took a sip of the brew, slowly feeling the caffeine kick in.
She was slowly feeling the buzz set in as everyone else got themselves a gup as well, except for John who wasn't going to trust anything she gave them. Castiel also drank so after Celine forced a mug in front of him the contained an herbal tea. Once everyone had a decent amount of caffeine in their systems, Celine unlocked the safe and brought the spellbook and notes out of it. She turned around to the back table and brought out the books that Sam gathered the previous night. In no time, they were in the same configuration as last night: Castiel and Celine were going through the spellbook and translating it; Mary, Sam, and Dean were going through resource books while looking at the translation notes; Emily continued making sets of protective charms; John was wandering around the shop, trying to find anything that would point to the two witches being evil.
After an hour of continuous work, Castiel and Celine had finished their part. Handing the last page of notes to Sam, she said: "This is the last of it."
He looked through the pages for a while before setting the pages down. To Dean and Mary, he asked "do you two see anything about 'the worthless?'" he asked them.
Mary and Dean looked through the notes they had gone through. Mary pulled a page out and said, "I found something along the lines of 'the worthless are wasting their lives away.' Then she goes on with how disgusted with them she is."
Dean following after her saying, "I have 'the worthless aren't going to be missed.' Whoever she's finding worthless, she had was studying them pretty hard."
"This final spell is talking about taking the blood from 'the worthless.' Then she notes how it is was having better results, saying the blood is the essence of life. Now she's saying the spell is perfected. It's probably not hard to figure out that is is the drug users she's finding worthless and easy prey."
"I hate to say it," Emily started, "but she's technically right. If someone is addicted enough and they're found dead, their families just assume they died of an overdose."
"I think I just threw up a little," Celine mentioned. "Why would she need a partner though?"
"Partner?" Sam and Dean asked.
"We believe that a partner was unknowingly helping until they figured out what was going on," Mary clued them in. "They sent the book here hoping to find help."
"So, we're looking for someone who would need a partner to look legit that deals with drug addicts?" Dean asked.
"Celine, didn't the last rehab clinic close down a couple of months ago?" Emily asked.
"I think you're right," Celine responded.
"What's this about rehab clinics?" Dean asked.
"Well, the last rehab center closed a couple of months ago, forcing all of the addictions in their care to fend for themselves," Emily told the group. "A couple of safe havens had popped up here and there I've seen a couple of flyers for them around town. They're people who will take you in and help you with withdrawal. It's not the safest way, but it's what we have. Every single one of the needs at least two people to help if the person gets out of control during.
"What I'm thinking is that this partner went into this thinking that they were helping people with withdrawal. After finding the book, they sent it here. We're not the only occult shop in the city, but we're the only one within a decent radius."
The three hunters thought about her suggestion for a couple of minutes. It was sounded plausible, but it would be hard to test that out.
"It seems like we would need some kind of bait," Sam said.
"Not necessarily," Emily said. "The police department has a newsletter they send out every couple of months. It details the kinds of crimes that happened within that period and where they occurred. They all get archived online. I would also guess that moving around too much would lead to too many questions, so you could search buildings within an area of interest."
"That could work," Dean said out loud. It wasn't above them to break into buildings to search them for whatever monster they were looking for. The would have to wait for night to fall so they wouldn't be seen.
"It's the best idea we have so far," Sam told the group.
"Well, I've made the charms I can think," Emily told the hunters. "They're all in sets of five in case you get separated."
"Can we burn the book now?" Celine interrupted.
"It might be useful to keep it on hand," Sam informed her.
"How about I let you have all of the notes? I don't feel comfortable letting that thing back out into the world."
"We can work with that," Dean told her.
"Great," Celine supplied. She walked into the back bringing back a wide iron container. When she set it down, they could see that it contained the jar of salt he had the previous day, a couple of bundles of sage, and a lighter. "We should probably take this outside. I rather not set off the fire alarms."
Celine led the entire group out of the back of her shop, iron container in hand. It was a back alley with only one main entrance down here. As they saw John snooping around. "What are you looking for?" Celine asked him blankly, making John turn around quickly and look where the voice came from. "Maybe I can help you so you can stop looking through my things."
"There's no law against me looking through the trash," he told her.
"No," Celine agreed, "but it's still super creepy."
John opened his mouth to give her another retort when he noticed the entire group standing behind her. "What's everyone out here for?" he asked.
"We're having a cleansing and burning ritual," Emily said as if that explained everything.
"What?" John repeated.
"We're burning the spellbook," Mary told him bluntly, holding it out since she grabbed it on the way out.
"Really?"
"Yes," Celine told him blankly. "What else would you suggest we do with it?"
John had no answer yet again and motioned for them to continue. Celine put the container on the ground and then moved to sit on the ground, Emily helping her on the way down. She took the supplies out of the container and motioned for Mary to give her the book. Once in hand, Celine started muttering under her breath and put the book in. She continued as she slowly added the salt to the bin. In the end, she lifted the lighter and sage. She said a couple more words before setting the sage on fire and placing it in. After a few moments, the sound of paper burning was heard as the fire grew in size. Emily helped Celine back up as the entire group watched the book burned. Once there were only ashes left, Emily pouted water on it out of the water bottle she brought out.
"Well, that's done," Celine told them. "I've been standing for far too long." She turned right back around and went back into the shop, Emily following closely afterward.
"Wow," John noted. "I was expecting her to really burn the book. Quite a nice show."
"What were you even doing out here?" Mary demanded an answer out of him.
"I was looking around. Most people don't think about what they throw away." John stated it as if she should have known that. "I was hoping that I would find something out here since I didn't see anything inside. I didn't see anything though."
"That's because there's nothing to find!" Mary screamed at him and John looked at her in shock. "Most people who are evil don't help the people trained to kill them. That's just common sense. We're lucky they continued helping us considering what you've been doing."
Instead of letting John have another word, she turned around and stormed back into the shop. John looked back at her in shock. He looked at his sons and saw that they had impressed looks on their faces. The thing looked at him in interest, as if his reaction was found amusing to it. He brushed it off and took the shock off his face. The three in front of him turned around and went inside as well. John took a moment to get completely over his shock before following them back in.
He found Sam and Dean collecting all of the notes they made over the last two days. The thing was just watching them do so. Mary and Celine were talking in hushed tones to one another. Based on her facial features, Celine was telling Mary something serious while Mary was nodding in agreement. Emily was hopping in and out of the room, taking things with her as she left. Once they saw him walk in, they kind of froze what they were doing and looked at him. They awkwardly continued what they were doing after a beat. He watched the conversation that was happening. He needed to know if that witch had corrupted his wife in some kind of way. He walked closer to them and noticed that they were talking about pregnancy. "Ah!" Jon thought to himself. "Of course, Mary would be interested in the baby."
Noticing John slowly making his way toward them, she abruptly ended the conversation. "Thank you so much for your help, Celine."
"Of course. It was my pleasure."
Sam and Dean had finished collecting the last of the pages and walked over toward them. We'll be getting out of your way now," Sam told Celine. "Sorry for taking over your shop."
"I'm just happy that that's done with."
Emily had come back out, now with a large box at hand. She handed it to Mary. "These are all the charms I made. They're in sets per person. You guys can figure it out."
Mary reached out to grab the bottom of the box, resting it on her arms. It wasn't heavy but there was some weight to it.
"Oh, one last thing," Celine mentioned before leaving for the back room. She came back soon after with a small white box. She walked over to Castiel and gave it to him, "I hope you won't need this, but keep it in case you do. Good luck." She gave him a small smile before taking a couple of steps away from him.
"What was that?" Emily asked her.
"Nothing you need to worry about right now," Celine informed her.
Emily just shrugged it off. She led the group of hunters and angels to the front door. As she got there, she flipped the sign open and opened the doors for them. "That was fun, but let's never do this again." She closed the door before they could respond as she went back to the store.
The group of five was walking back to the Impala that was parked not too far away. Dean popped the trunk for Mary to place the charms before getting in. Once settled in their seats, John asked: "What exactly is the plan?"
Instead of a response, everyone just groaned.
