Subaru woke up under yet another unfamiliar roof. Sitting up, he saw the full recovery message from the AR, but that wasn't on his mind.
"Are you awake?"
Emilia was by his bedside. He was happy to see someone he knew in this unfamiliar house, but he could tell Emilia wasn't very happy.
"Yeah. Can I ask how things turned out?"
"Things turned out fine, but you told me it was nothing! Why didn't you tell me you were going to get into a fight? I was worried!"
"Sorry, I couldn't exactly bring you into a deadly fight on purpose. Seeing as you're a candidate, it wouldn't be very smart of me. I thought me and Rem could handle things well enough."
"You still should have told us!"
Subaru had to spend a few minutes calming Emilia down. In the end Emilia left to go talk to the minor spirits outside. Subaru stood up and began to head outside, but was stopped by Puck.
"You made Lia pretty worried. Your condition was pretty bad"
"Was it that awful? I know I used all of my mana and all, but that shouldn't affect me other than knocking me out for a few hours."
"Your standards on your condition are abnormal. If you use up all of your mana too often, then you'll break your gate. You used it all up only a week ago and you did it again here. It can't feel good to be out of mana either."
"Don't worry too much about me. Anyway, the last thing that I remember was teleporting me and Rem out of the fight. I blacked out after that. I assume the dogs didn't track us into the village?"
"Yeah. Lia fixed the barrier crystal too. The witchbeasts won't be a problem."
"That's good. Everything turned out alright."
"I have to ask though. What are you?"
Subaru didn't understand the question. Puck continued his questioning.
"Despite being in critical state, a few hours of sleep closed all the wounds on your body along with completely restoring your mana. If anything, I feel like I'm sensing more off of you than before. I'm told by Rem that you consistently wake up extremely early to practice swinging your sword, yet you never show signs of exhaustion. It could be explained if you were an oni, but as far as I can tell, you're human."
Subaru didn't know how to answer him. He was human, yet he had the system on his side. It was in every way the source of Subaru's strength, yet when he opened his mouth to try to explain the phenomenon to Puck, he got a notification from the AR.
'Players that explain their supports from the system will have their privileges revoked.'
This sentence stopped Subaru from saying anything related to the system. In the end, he had no choice but to say that he was just made that way. That he was absolutely human and that he was just made that way. Puck accepted this answer surprisingly easily. Subaru was troubled once again by the system's mysteries, but it didn't look like he'd gain any information anytime soon.
Subaru and Puck fell silent for a bit. Puck spoke up first.
"Hey Subaru, I have a favor to ask of you."
"Hmm? What do you need?"
"Could you become Lia's knight?"
Subaru paused for a few seconds blankly.
"Sorry, I didn't catch that, could you say it again?"
"I want you to become Lia's knight. You have a good amount of strength. You've also never had malicious thoughts the entire time I've known you."
"You've only known me for a week and you want to decide based on that? There should be a lot more people with pure thoughts that are much more suited to the knight's role than me."
"That's true, but you are able to treat Lia without any regard to her being a half elf. The thought hasn't even crossed your mind. There are far fewer people that can do that. You might not be very strong now, but I can feel a lot of potential from you."
Subaru was confused by what he meant by half elf, but ultimately didn't ask. He knew that becoming her knight was far more work than being a simple butler like he had been, but a certain part of him wanted to accept the proposal.
"I'm happy that you think so highly of me, but I don't think this is something that can be decided between just the two of us. We should talk it over with Emilia and Roswaal present. If also like some time to think about it."
Puck accepted this and began to head outside before calling back to Subaru one more time.
"By the way, Ram is handing out food to the villagers. You should find her if you're hungry."
To this, Subaru's stomachs growled. Puck floated out and Subaru thought about his proposal some more. Becoming a knight would come with all kinds of duties and problems. Unlike being a simple servant, he would be expected to guard her and fight. On the plus side, he would probably be paid more and would obtain a higher position in society. He liked the idea of becoming a knight, but didn't know if he could hold himself to the pristine image knights would be expected to have at all times. While he wasn't against it, he would at least have to learn etiquette.
His stomach growled once more and he decided that he would discuss it with everyone once Roswaal returned. Subaru exited the house and headed in Ram's direction. He would figure out what to do with his new levels and items that he would get from the completion of 'Arc 2.'
Subaru found Ram quickly and quickly received his share of food. He was starving after last night which led his to believe that while sleeping would restore awful wounds and all his stamina and mana in a short four hours, it wouldn't do him any favors as far as earning was concerned.
Subaru opened up his new status page as he began to eat the steamed potato. He was now level 17. His fight with the ulgarm had given him tons of EXP. He was able to defeat so many only because Rem was there during the second half of the battle. He would have to talk to her after this was done. Apparently she was back at the mansion taking care of most of the chores once again. She had great work ethic, but even she had to have limits eventually.
Moving on, his footwork skill had gone to level 3, space magic to 4, and swordsmanship to 7. Despite not using it, 'last stand' had gone up to level 11. Maybe use of the skills that came from other skills still benefitted the original skill as well. Sprinting had gone up to 12, which made him wonder just what the max was. His skills were coming along quite nicely.
Next, he accepted his Arc 2 rewards. A complete overhaul of his equipment. He had the option of choosing from the beginner equipment again in order to gain more weapons, or he could choose to submit the weapons he already had for upgrade. He chose to upgrade his equipment, all of which doubled in strength. All the equipment gained a new shine. The katana gained a blue streak on it. It became heavier, but his level canceled out the feeling of weight. He secretly wished for an arc 3 so he could upgrade it again, but scolded himself. Fighting for one's life like the arc quests had him do wasn't a good thing.
Less important was the EXP he got for completing the quest. It raised him up to 18, which was nice, but ultimately unnecessary.
Finally came the two mystery items. When games had mystery items, it usually ended up being either a key item, or an incredibly useful item. Seeing as this wasn't a game, he hoped for something really useful. The first item was called a skill orb. He summoned it out of his inventory. It was about the size of a tennis ball. Upon inspection, it was exactly what it sounded like. It granted the player who broke it a skill. Unfortunately, it didn't say what the skill was. Subaru tossed the orb into the air and slashed it. His body felt much faster and stronger than before. He could control his strength perfectly, but it was still a strange feeling when his body moved faster than his mind could expect.
'Skill Acquired—Mana Wings'
Subaru didn't know what to think. The name was once again self explanatory, but what was he supposed to do with it? He decided that testing it now would bring too much attention. He would try it when he got back to the mansion.
The second item was considerably less troubling. It was called a 'job releaser.' The system clearly wasn't one for creative names. He checked it and it did what it said. It released the restriction on his secondary job. He used it and a menu popped up in his head. It asked him what he wanted his job to be. The options were quite basic.
"Apprentice swordsman and apprentice mage. Not a lot of variety is there?"
There were only two options. One specializing in physical combat and the other in magical. He thought this might be an important decision. He might not be able to switch it later if he so needed, but the item description stated that it could be used once every 6 hours. If it could be used every 6 hours, then he could just change his mind later and switch. He set it as apprentice swordsman for the time being.
Checking his status, it had in fact changed. All his physical stats got a +10. Additionally, the secondary job had it's own level. His bonus from his secondary job would probably increase as its own separate level did. However, if he switched it, he would probably lose his extra physical stats for extra magical ability. Either way, he would have more to work with.
Wrapping up his meal. He began to walk over to where Emilia and Ram were talking. They were going to go back to the manor and were waiting for him at Emilia's request.
"Are you ready to head back?"
When Subaru's eyes met Emilia's, he thought back to his conversation with Puck. It wasn't a decision to be made lightly. He was fond of the idea, but that was only in his head. He would have to take time to think it through.
"Subaru?"
"Sorry, I was just lost in thought. I'm ready to go."
"Please wait!"
Many of the villagers had gathered here. It wasn't a big gathering, but it was the majority of the villagers. In unison they bowed their heads.
"""Thank you for saving our children."""
The villagers expressed their gratitude to Subaru and the others. Subaru smiled and thought to himself. 'Even if I did it for myself, it's still nice to receive the gratitude of others.' Subaru and the others accepted their gratitude and went on their way.
The three began walking back to the manor. Subaru had survived another deadly encounter. This world seemed to have it in for him, but he could just fight back as her did before. He was no longer weak. Even if the world threw another gauntlet at him, he would just pick it up and beat it. His future was looking brighter than ever.

It took awhile, but I finally got secondary jobs into play. Half of the fun when I'm writing is when I'm thinking about the system's mechanics. This might be the end of the main arc 2, but I'm still going to have two or three more chapters dedicated to the time in between arcs 2 and 3. I still have to settle things with Rem, cover the idea of Subaru becoming a knight early on, and so much more. Luckily, there should be a month of time or so in between the end of this and the beginning of arc 3. I hope you all continue to enjoy this.
P.S- I wont be taking credit for the idea of Subaru becoming Emilia's knight this early. RE:Jedi Exile by Ilikestuff098 wrote this and I thought it was a brilliant idea to incorporate into my story.
