"What do you mean you can't come in today?! I have a meeting with the mayor today that I cannot miss or I lose half my funding. No!" Regina sighed, "No. I will find someone else who doesn't decide to drink the night before they know they're supposed to be taking care of my son considering you do it EVERY WEEKNEND!"
She hung up her phone and found some release in yelling at her now ex nanny.
"What's wrong mama Gina?" Roland said as he ran into the kitchen on an early Saturday morning, "Is Miss Madeleine coming today?"
Regina put on her mommy face before crouching down to his eye level, "No, I'm sorry baby. Madeleine won't be coming today, or ever again. We're getting you a new nanny, but for today we'll have to find a quick alternative who knows how too give you your medica-"
"Is Miss Emma coming back soon?" he interrupted.
"Emma? Um I don't know sweetheart. I hope so. She is nice isn't she?"
He nodded his head as he reached for a stool and took it to reach the cookie jar, "You said she'd be nice. And she is much nicer."
She looked at Roland with a face feigning shock, "Excuse me, it is Saturday morning. What makes you think you can have a cookie for breakfast?" she scoffed.
He flashed his big brown eyes and pouted. Regina couldn't say no to those.
"Fine… But just one ok?"
"Ok!" he cheered as he reached in for a cookie and happily ate it.
She smiled and ruffled his hair, "A little Cookie Monster today aren't we?"
"They're really good," he pointed out as if she didn't know what a cookie tasted like.
She laughed and picked him up to twirl him around in the air, causing him to giggle, "I know little one. They're just not all to good for you, but anyway we need to find someone to look after you today."
"M-m-miss Emma can look after me right? She's nice and funny," he explained as his giggling died down and wrapped Regina in a hug.
"You just met her last night Roro. You like her that much already?"
He nodded his head and with a straight face answered, "She good. I can tell."
Regina smiled, "Yeah she is," she set him down, "How would you like to go see Emma today?"
He eagerly nodded his head and Regina flashed a toothy grin, "Great! Now lets see if I can even get her to agree to it."
She picked up her cell phone and stared at it, wondering if this was even a good idea. She had just gotten on good time with Emma. Was this gonna be a deal breaker for their rekindled friendship? Well even if it was she had no other choice. She needed a babysitter for Roland and the only people in her contacts list were her boss, her now ex nanny, Rolands school, and now Emma.
"Roland are you sure?" she asked more for herself than for him.
He nodded once more but gave his mother a curious look, "You always said Emma was a friend. Did you lie?"
"No, she is a friend. Mama just wasn't always a good friend to her, but we'll try," she said as she dialed Emma's number.
"Gina? Everything ok?" she answered through a yawn.
"Oh, I'm sorry. Did I wake you?"
"Doesn't matter," she laughed, "I'm up now. What's up?"
"Em, I wouldn't ask this if I had any friends in the city, and I usually have everything planned to the last detail but my nanny just called off and I did not see this coming. She was the back up for the back up nanny. I didn't think to have a backup for her and now I have a budget meeting with the mayor but no one to watch an-"
"Yes."
"Wait? What? I didn't eve- I didn't even ask a question."
"We've been apart for years, but I still remember how you ramble. I also remember I didn't quite enjoy listening to you panic. So I picked out the main argument and came to the conclusion that you need a babysitter, and you're lucky I have the day off. So yes I will watch your child, but I expect compensation in the form of food when you pick him up," she joked, "But you know where I live so drop him off when you're ready."
"Thank you! Thank you so much Emma! I owe you one."
She laughed, "Yeah, yeah, you're lucky I'm like half asleep right now cuz I wouldn't give up sleeping in for just anyone. Fully awake, yet sleep deprived Emma, is gonna be livid in a few minutes."
Regina smiled, "Well I'll try to have him there by the time she cools down, Thanks again Em."
"Hurry up before I change my mind Gina."
"Ok, ok. We're on our way," she laughed as she hung up the phone, "Roland, sweetheart, get your things. Emma said she'd watch you."
"Ready!" he cheered as he stood at the door with a brown t-shirt (inside out), red shorts, green shoes (on the wrong feet), and hand bag he must've fished out from her closet.
She smirked and tried to hide her laugh, "Oh sweetie no. Here let mama help," she fixed his shoes and turned his shirt to the right side, "Now I don't really like the colors you have chosen out, but you're just a kid. Mismatched colors suit you."
He grinned and hugged her tight before reaching for the handbag he took earlier. Regina quickly took her Hermès Birkin back and stashed it on a hook until they came back.
"This mamas very expensive purse but you can take your backpack," she said as she grabbed his backpack and handed it to him, "Ok now we can go."
"Let's gooooooo," he cheered as he ran down the hall to the elevator and Regina locked their door.
They approached Emma's apartment in 10 minutes flat, as the brunette was speeding to at least be fashionably late to her meeting. Frantically, she knocked on the door and checked her phone. When Emma opened the door, still in a bra and shorts, she crunched up her face a bit, "You fell asleep and forgot didn't you?"
"What? No," she said through a yawn, "I mean yes, I did fall asleep, but I didn't forget."
Regina glanced down at her barely covered chest and back to her eyes. Emma gave a confused look in response before looking down at her outfit.
"Shit," she muttered under her breath before reaching for something behind her door, "Sorry Regina, and sorry to your eyes Roland," she said before pulling a hoodie over her head.
He shrugged as he slid past Emmas legs and put his things down, "I like your house! It's smaller than ours but I like it."
Both women laughed.
"Thanks kid. It serves it's purpose."
"Give me a kiss before I go," she urged.
Roland shuffled over and kissed her on the cheek, "I'll be good. I promise."
"I know you will," she smiled, "I'll see you later ok. I love you."
She kissed his cheek and stood up while he rubbed his cheek clean of her kiss causing her to laugh. She rolled her eyes and laughed as she reached for Emma's waist and leaned forward placing a kiss on her cheek as well. As soon as she pulled away the shock hit her. The same look on her face was also on Emma's.
"I-I-I don't know why I did that," she tried to play off, "But I will see you later, and thank you again."
She pulled her jacket tighter, hiked up her purse further onto her shoulder and turned away to head back towards her car.
"I don't know why I did that. I don't know why I did that," she mumbled under her breath as Emma and Roland watched her enter her car and drive off.
"She hasn't kissed anyone since my papa died," Roland informed the blonde, "Good to know she still likes you."
Emma's head snapped towards the boy, "Say what now?"
"Mama Gina's talked about you for awhile. She used to tell me stories of your adventures, when papa died she stopped. But they sounded pretty cool," he added as Emma closed the door and followed the child to her couch.
"Your mom talks about me?"
With a simple nod he moved on from the topic and pulled out a coloring book from his backpack. Emma took a seat next to the boy and pulled her legs up to her chest as she observed him color.
"What does she say?"
He shrugged, "Lots of girl things," he cringed, "Unless it was your adventures than it was dangerous fun stuff. Those were my favorites."
He stuck his tongue out and furrowed his brows as he filled in the last part of his picture. He proudly held up his picture for Emma.
"Wow kid. You're really good."
"Thanks."
"Hey, are you hungry? Because I am. How about some waffles?"
"Do you have whipped cream?"
"Do I have whipp- Of course I have whipped cream!" She exclaimed as she hopped off the couch and headed to the kitchen.
The truth was she wasn't that hungry. She just decided it wasn't fair to interrogate a kid, who just wants to color, about whether or not her ex girlfriend, who just so happens to be his mom, likes her or not.
What she didn't know, and for that matter Regina herself, was that the feelings between the had never really gone away. They were just buried under years of hate, hurt, betrayal, distance, time, etc. Now that things were more or less cleared up, those feelings were resurfacing without them even trying. That's why Regina kissed Emma, sure it was a shock for both of them, but it was also the most natural thing to have occurred for them in a very long time.
