Chapter 22 Worry

I stood in the doorway watching. Thorin didn't want me touching the gold. Fili and Kili disappeared to explore. I decided not to go with for now.

"Any sign of it?!" Thorin said. He was pacing over a balcony looking at the treasure hoard. He was falling under the gold sickness bad.

"Nothing yet." Dwalin said

"Nothing here." Nori said

"Keep searching!" Thorin said.

"That jewel could be anywhere!" Oin said.

"The Arkenstone is in these halls. Find it." Thorin shouted. Anger and impatience was in his voice. I shook my head at this.

"You heard him. Keep looking." Dwalin ordered.

"All of you. No one rests until it is found." Thorin said. I turn and head towards the gate. I stood on the ramparts looking out.

"Daughter." Valar's voice came. I close my eyes and open them to see father standing there.

"The gold sickness has taken Thorin. I fear for Fili and Kili if anything happens to Thorin." I said.

"You can save him." Valar said, coming up to me.

"How?" I ask.

"I know you'll figure it out." Valar said. I open my eyes and back at Erebor. I sigh in tiredness. I saw Bilbo sitting on rock and him pull out the Arkenstone from his pocket.

"Ye have it?" I ask, coming over.

"Laila. I didn't see you there." Bilbo said, jumping to his feet.

"Don't worry. I won't say anything." I said.

"Your worried to? You see the sickness effecting Thorin." Bilbo said. I nod.

"I had a feeling. We heard the rumors before Smaug attacked. I fear Fili will fall under it if we don't stop this." I said.

"Let's keep this between us till we figure something to do with it." Bilbo said. I nod.

"Laila!" Fili called, running up to me. Bilbo quickly put the stone away without being caught as I turned to look at Fili.

"What is it?" I ask.

"Come on. Let's get away from the stress." Fili said. I looked at Bilbo.

"Go." Bilbo said. Fili held out his hand and I took it. Fili and I walk through Erebor.

"Where ye taking me?" I ask. Fili sent me a wink as we head down a hall. We stopped at the doors that had the royal symbol. Fili pushed it open and we step in. A fire was roaring in the fireplace and blankets on the floor.

"Kili is gonna make sure we are left alone." Fili said. I looked up at him and smile. Few hours later we laid curled up as he ran his fingers down my back.

"Its nice to get away." I said. Fili pressed a kiss to my head.

"Its much needed after not having much time in the dungeons and being seperated." Fili said. I roll so I am sitting on top of him. He smiled as looked up at me.

"Yer the best thing that has happened to me in centuries." I said. I lean down and kiss him. His hand comes into my hair and pulls me deeper into the kiss. The doors burst open and I groan against his lips.

"Fili. Laila. We are needed at the gates. Well. Well. Sorry for interupting." Kili said. I looked up and see a smug grin on his face.

"Why are we needed at the gates?" I ask.

"Laketown people are here." Kili said. I got off Fili and grab my weapons. Fili took my hand and pulled me against him.

"We'll catch up after this." Fili whispered, pecking my lips. I smile as we head to the front gate.

"Start putting stones around the hole." Thorin said. I go to help and he stops me. "Not you." I raise an eyebrow as the dwarves start moving rocks towards the destruction. "I want this fortress made safe by sunup. This mountain was hard won. I will not see it taken again." The dwarves were carrying rock by their hands and using various pulleys and machines to move the rocks. Kili and Bilbo pulled a wagon and Kili dropped it.

"The people of Laketown have nothing. They came to us in need. They have lost everything." Kili said.

"Do not tell me what they have lost. I know well enough their hardship. Those who have lived through dragonfire should rejoice. They have much to be grateful for." Thorin said. He turned to look at Dale. Fili came over to me.

"Go to the chambers we were in earlier. I'll be there later." Fili said.

"Ye sure." I said.

"Uncle doesn't want you helping. Please." Fili said. I sigh.

"Alright." I said. Fili kissed me.

"More stone. Bring more stone to the gate!" Thorin said.

"Go. I'll come get you tomorrow." Fili said.

"FILI!" Thorin yelled. He gives me one last look and heads towards the gate. I head for the chambers. I laid using Fili's jacket as a pillow and to be able to smell his scent as I look into the fire as I look into it.

"Valar. How am I supposed to Save Thorin when he is already gone." I whisper. I roll over and look at the ceiling. War was coming and I knew it was gonna be a bloodbath. I close my eyes as I let sleep take me.
