Almost a week has passed and JJ hadn't heard anything from Emily. Prentiss hadn't been showing up to work and that really worried her. Jennifer hated the way things went when she confronted Emily about Sophia. She also found out that Penelope knew everything all along and hid it from her. She was mad at first, but understood why. After the two talked about it, they decided not to tell anyone else and let Emily do the honors. The worst part about it was Sophia and how she had been asking JJ about Emily constantly since the Christmas dinner party.
It was the last day of he year and Rossi was having a New Year's Eve party at his house for the team.
It was ten o'clock, dinner was served hours ago and now everyone was just eating appetizers and small plate foods. JJ was hoping Emily was going to show up so they could talk, but it didn't look like she was. However, at eleven o'clock, the brunette showed up.
"Emily!" Sophia exclaimed when she saw the woman.
Everyone's head turned toward the door to see Prentiss dusting the snow off her shoulder.
She gave them all a weak smile.
"You came," Sophia said as more of a statement and walked over to her.
"Yeah, sorry I'm late. I brought wine though," she said and held up a bottle.
"Ah you're forgiven," Rossi said, with a smile and took the bottle from her.
After taking her coat and shoes off, Emily followed Sophia back to the living room area. JJ and Emily made brief eye contact but it was quickly broken by Sophia asking,
"Where have you been?" to Emily.
"What do you mean?" the brunette asked.
"You've been MIA since the Christmas party and your fight with JJ," Sophia pointed out.
"I'm guessing you don't know what the fight was about," Emily assumed.
"JJ said it wasn't any of my business, but if you want to share-"
"No, that was between us," Emily said, shooting the blonde a look and cutting the girl off.
"Sorry I asked," Sophia mumbled, a bit hurt at how harsh Emily responded.
Prentiss sighed.
"I didn't mean to snap at you. I just- I've been going through a lot right now and-it's complicated," she slowly faded out and then said,
"I'm going to get a glass a wine. I'll be right back."
She got up and quickly walked away.
Rossi noticed something was off with her and followed.
"Everything alright, Emily?" he asked her as she was pouring herself a glass of wine.
"No," she told him flat out.
He was surprised at the bluntness but then again, it was Emily he was talking to.
"Do you want to talk about it?" he asked.
"Yeah, but not now," she told him seriously.
"How about we discuss it over coffee tomorrow," he offered.
"Yeah, that'd be great," she said and gave him a small smile.
He smiled back and the two walked back into the living room together.
For the rest of the night, the team played board games and when the time came, watched the ball drop.
"3,2,1 Happy New Years!"
The second the clock read 12:00 the room went crazy. Everyone was cheering and wishing each other a happy New Years. At the exact time, Emily slipped out without anyone noticing and went back to her hotel room. She hated seeing Sophia and not being able to tell her who she was. She hated seeing JJ's judge mental eyes and Garcia's sympathetic smile.
She hated it all.
The next day there was a knock at Emily's door. When she opened it, she found Rossi standing there waiting.
"You ready?" he asked.
"For what?" she wanted to know.
"I'm buying you a cup of coffee so you'll tell me what's going on with you," he said and held the door open.
"Right," she said and grabbed her bag and followed him out.
When they arrived at the coffee shop, they got their drinks and took a seat.
After letting her take a sip, Rossi asked,
"So what's going on with you?"
Prentiss dragged out another sip of coffee and told him,
"After I tell you, you're going to think I'm an awful person and you're going to hate me."
"Its too late. I already think you're an awful person," he joked.
That got a small smile out of her, but it quickly disappeared and she said,
"This is really hard for me to talk about."
"Hey, I'm here for you, Em," he replied and took her hand in his. Rossi was like a father to Emily. He was always there for her and for some reason, she knew she could trust him with anything. She told him about her teen pregnancy and now she was about to tell him about her secret daughter.
"You remember Ian Doyle, right?" she started off with.
"Yeah," Rossi replied.
"Well as you know, when I was undercover I had to play house in order to get close with him," she continued slowly. Quickly she looked away and closed her eyes.
He nodded. Dave could tell Emily was struggling with telling him this.
"I can't believe I'm about to tell you this," she whispered to herself, but he heard.
When she opened her eyes, she said,
"You'd think after the first time I'd learn how to use a damn condom," she said with a sad smile that turn into tears quickly.
"Oh my god, Emily," he whispered.
"You didn't?" he asked in disbelief.
"The only difference is this time I carried her to term," Emily told him.
"Her?" he asked.
Prentiss looked up into his eyes and nodded.
"So she's what, thirteen?" he asked.
"Twelve, but her birthday is coming up soon," she told him.
"There's a little Emily out there. Well, when can I meet her?" Dave wanted to know.
"That's the thing. You already have," Emily said.
Slowly, Rossi was able to piece together the puzzle inside his head.
"It's Sophia, isn't it?" he asked.
Emily nodded in response.
Rossi remembered Sophia's story about how her mom left her in a park and abandoned her.
"The man that 'found' Sophia knew who she was, didn't he?" Dave asked. He knew Emily, and he knew that she wasn't the type of person to just leave a child.
"A little," she replied.
"I didn't just ditch her, but I couldn't keep her anymore."
"Why?"
"It's when Ian's crew escaped prison and started coming after me. I knew that they would kill Sophia if they found her because I turned them all in. I fled to DC and left Sophia. At the time I thought it was the right thing, but now..." she trailed off.
"You did do the right thing. Remember five years ago when Doyle tracked you down. If he had known about Sophia, he would've killed her."
That comment silenced Emily.
"What is it?" Rossi asked.
"He did know about her," she stated and thought back to when Doyle held her captive.
FLASHBACK*
Five years ago...
"I know," Ian said lowly as he cocked the gun.
"You know what?" Emily asked tiredly.
"That you were pregnant."
Prentiss was shocked.
"No I wasn't," she lied.
"I found the pregnancy tests in the bathroom garbage. How could keep our child from me?"
"I terminated the pregnancy immediately," she told him lowly.
"You what?!" He nearly screamed and tipped her chair back.
"How could I bring your child into the world?"
"You're lying," he told her.
"The child would end up suffering because of you. I ended her torture before it could begin."
"I can't believe you," he spat.
"You took away both of my children!"
She just closed her eyes.
When she opened them, she found Ian backed up and had the gun away from her head.
"You said she. It was a girl?"
Prentiss didn't know how to reply.
"I can't even look at you," he said full off disappointment and walked out of the room. Emily sighed and closed her eyes. She felt terrible for lying to him about their daughter, but she knew it was the only way to keep Sophia safe.
End flashback*
"Oh my god. This makes so much sense," Rossi breathed.
"What do you mean?" Emily asked.
"She was the little girl from your dream," he said.
Prentiss looked confused.
"Remember when the whole Doyle thing happened?"
The brunette nodded.
"You told Penelope that you were having a nightmare of a little girl on a hill. How she was waiting for you but the hill got steeper and when you got to the top, she was gone."
"Yeah," Emily said.
"Penelope told us about it when you 'died.' We all thought that the little girl was supposed to represent you or your innocence. It was Sophia, wasn't it?"
"Yeah," Prnetiss said.
Rossi gave her friend a sad smile.
"Em, I know you and JJ aren't really talking right now and I know she thinks you just ditched her, but you should talk and spend time with Sophia."
"JJ won't let me."
"You care about your daughter don't you?" Dave wanted to make clear.
"Of course, it's why I had to leave her. If Doyle and his men found out I carried her to term and still had her, they'd use her against me, like the Koreans would've done with Declan. I had to end both of their suffering before it could begin," she explained.
Rossi didn't know what to say.
"I've been waiting five years to see my kid again and be apart of her life, and now I can't."
"Wait, five years? Did you give her up when she was two?"
"Yeah but I met her again when she was seven right before I left to catch Doyle."
"You were worried about her. About Doyle finding her, weren't you?"
"Yeah, I just needed to know she was safe."
"Emily, you're a great mother."
The brunette scoffed.
"Try telling that to JJ."
