Chase had been in the hospital for two weeks. She was still on life support but hadn't gotten any worse. The only time Trevor would leave was to go to school. He slept at the hospital. He'd just gotten back from school. Pam was there.
"Hi Trevor." Pam said.
"Hi Pam."
"How was school?"
"Ok I guess." "Any news about Chase?"
"They're taking the tube out next week to see if she can breathe on her own."
"What if she can't?"
"I'll have to make the decision on whether or not to take her off life support."
"Let's just hope for the best."
"We all have to pray." "I have to get to work."
"Go ahead, you know I'll stay with her."
An hour later Trevor was doing his algebra homework." "I could really use your help with this baby." "Next week when they take the tube out, you need to take a big deep breath, ok?" "I miss you."
The next day Randy went to the hospital. He did every day, he skipped a study hall daily so he could. He knew it was the only time Trevor wasn't there. Angela knew nothing about it of course. He went into Chase's room.
"Hi Chase." He said. He bent down and kissed her forehead. "I wish you could say something to me." "Even if you just told me to leave."
Randy had been there for about fifteen minutes when Pam walked in.
"Hi Randy." She said.
"Hi." He said surprised.
"I'm on my lunch break."
"Do you want me to go?"
"It's fine, stay." "I know you come here every day at this time anyway." "The nurses tell me." "Is there something going on with you and Chase?"
"No."
"There was, wasn't there?" He didn't say anything. "I figured."
"How?"
"Well you only come when Trevor isn't here and you never bring Angela with you." "Plus I saw your expression when you found out." "That wasn't normal pain." "You're in love with her aren't you?"
"I gotta go." He left.
