Angel: Another one-shot dealing with children, didn't this just happen like two chapters ago XD
I don't know if I'll have the time to do my own version of the rejected spin-off for Varian, but I'd love to do a one-shot for it with Harmony included! That'd be so cool.
I'm like on page...4 of reviews that have requests, so I wouldn't say I'm ready to take anymore just yet.
Anyway, this is set in Sisters' Tangled Adventure, but before the epilogue. The short Ever After has already happened.
Summary: Rapunzel tells Eugene some big news.
It's a quiet day in Corona, and everyone is doing their normal duties. The citizens are either walking around or running their shops. It's been a few years ever since Rapunzel and Eugene were married. Harmony recently became co-queen thanks to a newly implemented rule from Rapunzel, which states that if there are two princesses equally deserving to be queen, regardless of who is the heir, they can rule together. Harmony is still inventing in her spare time. Being the sundrop and the moonstone, she sometimes will be asked to use the incantations when absolutely necessary. And it's made her inventing much more easier (even if sometimes she just builds the non-magic way). Varian and Quirin work on his own inventions at least 3 times a week, and his friends couldn't be more happier for him for their fixed father-son relationship. Kiera and Catalina, of course, still cause trouble in the castle, but their friends didn't seem to mind...as long as Harmony and Varian are around. Lance still visits the Dark Kingdom on occasion to see Adira and check up on her. Eugene and Max still run the Royal Guard together, and have made significant progress. They have recently successfully created a way to guard the tiaras (with Harmony's help).
As for Rapunzel? She still makes a few bumps now and then, but she has her sister as an advisor on what to do if needed. She's made a lot of changes to Corona, but still keeps a few traditions every now and then. People appreciated her free-spirited outlook most of the time, and her ways have somewhat inspired the other kingdoms. Corona even celebrates the day that Zhan Tiri was defeated each year, and all the people who bravely fought against the demon. However, Rapunzel's now focused on a certain occasion coming up.
Once again, it is Eugene's birthday in a few days, his 30th one.
Obviously, it's a big deal. He's going into his 30s, and hopefully wouldn't worry about his age like he did for his 26th birthday, which was...not really a 'happy' birthday per say, since a vengeful Cassandra kidnapped Varian and then almost killed her sister. Rapunzel is just grateful that they managed to save both Cassandra and Corona.
This birthday has to be something special—which won't result like his 26th one. But she has no idea what to do for it. She felt like his 26th birthday really took the cake, not to mention she hasn't been feeling well. She wakes up in the morning ready to throw up, she's more tired than usual, and she has been using the bathroom more often than not. She was certain it was just a small bug like Harmony had when she was 14, and therefore didn't want to worry everyone by saying anything...well, besides Pascal.
"Okay Pascal," She sits in her chair in the dining hall, holding an apple to eat. "I was thinking that we could give Eugene a portrait for his birthday. We'll obviously have the party here...maybe in the garden! We don't use that area too often for a party, and it worked out great for Harmi's 15th birthday."
Pascal raises a brow at her, as if silently reminding her what happened that day.
"Well, for the most part. None of us were really expecting a rainy day, meeting a ghost, and then having time brought back just so we wouldn't miss the party. But it was so fun!" Rapunzel clasps her hands with a smile. "Besides, it was also the same day that she had her first kiss with Varian, heh," She nudges Pascal slightly. "I like to think that I helped out a lot with that one! Just like with Mom and Dad on the Day of Hearts."
Pascal stands up and mimics dancing the waltz like Harmony and Varian did that night. Rapunzel giggles at him, poking his belly.
"Let's see, Attila will bake the cake, and Harmi can help me with the guest list. We definitely have to invite the Brotherhood, and...hm," She taps her pencil against her chin. "I don't know if Cassandra will wanna go just for the cake or to make fun of his age, but it'd be really great to see her again. And her dad too!"
Pascal nods in agreement with a beaming smile and then she winces, putting a hand to her stomach. "Oof. Not again. I don't know what's wrong with me lately. Maybe it's just jitters about Eugene's birthday."
The chameleon gives her a look of worry and she waves it off. "I'll be fine. Maybe I'll ask Varian or Harmi about it later. Now where was I...? Oh! How am I gonna make this special for Eugene? I really want him to be happy and have the best birthday ever this year..."
Harmony and Varian are walking down the hall, holding a blueprint. She's eating from a bowl of blueberries while he has an apple in his hand. Varian has gotten taller in height significantly, being just as tall as Eugene, while Harmony's grown a few inches and still has her yellow/blue bangs.
"Do you really think it'll work this time?" She asks skeptically, as they're looking at the schematics for the Rooster. That's right, they were doing another attempt at an alarm system. Not for Cass, but for any other criminal activity that might plague Corona. Just a few weeks ago, they had a wave of thievery from Weasel and his gang. While they do trust Max and Eugene to be on top of this kind of stuff, they have big jobs and responsibilities and Lance...
Not a good temporary Captain. Or even a guard.
"With the right amount of Flynnoleum this time," He takes a bite out of his apple and she laughs, remembering what happened last time with it. "The Roooooster should work like it's supposed to! But we'll build it just by ourselves, Eugene, and Rapunzel this time. Lance and the girls aren't allowed to touch anything."
"And we'll have some bathing stuff ready should you look like a raccoon boy again," Harmony chuckles and he pouts at her.
"I thought we said you couldn't call me that anymore..."
"No one heard me. And you have to admit, you looked cute while being covered in soot and your hair all messy," She kisses his cheek and he smiles at the contact. Rapunzel walks out of the room she was just in and sees them up ahead.
"Ah, Harmi, Varian!" She smiles, running up to them. They turn around to see her. "How's the new Rooster coming along?"
"Oh, great, your high—I mean, Rapunzel," Varian corrects himself. Being the Royal Engineer and having an important position just like Eugene and Max, he tends to address her as 'your highness' or 'your majesty' out of habit. She's perfectly fine being called Rapunzel even though she's a co-queen, and never really liked the formalities despite her position.
"We were thinking of starting the building soon," Harmony smiles optimistically. "If Vari can make hot running water, then we can make another Rooster. With your approval too, obviously."
"Of course I approve!" Rapunzel takes the blueprint gently. "I have complete faith in you guys. This looks like it could really work."
"Thanks, and it will," Varian grins, taking the paper from her.
"Wish us luck," Harmony winks at her sister. "Anyway, is there something else you needed?"
"Well...I do have a question. I've been feeling a little sick lately," She holds her stomach.
"Sick?" Varian blinks at her.
"What? Why didn't you tell me?" Harmony frowns in slight worry.
"Maybe it has to do with her formerly being the sundrop-"
"No, no, nothing like that," Rapunzel waves a hand. Ever since she gave it up to her sister, her hair has stayed brown and short. She hasn't been able to do any of the incantations unlike Harmony, but she does have her journal to remember all the adventures that came after touching the black rocks. "I've just been so focused on planning Eugene's birthday recently and I didn't want to make a big deal out of it. We've had enough of Corona being in a panic the past few years."
"True," The two say in unison, remembering the uprising from Andrew, the black rocks, and the red rocks too. And those were just a few things that affected Corona.
"Anyway, I've had nausea, I can't sleep much lately, and I've used the bathroom a lot more times than usual." Their eyes widen as they glance to each other. "I think I might have gotten that bug you and Eugene had when we met Kiera and Catalina. It affected everyone back then, even Varian! So I should just rest up after Eugene's birthday, right?"
"Um..." Varian clears his throat. "Actually, it's not a bug."
"Really?" Rapunzel raises a curious brow, Pascal tilting her head. "What is it, then? Hopefully it's not something I have to worry about in the future-"
"Well...since the former Captain raised Cassandra, and we adopted Kiera and Catalina, I guess the topic hasn't come up for you to really understand it..." Harmony starts off.
"What topic?" Rapunzel blinks in confusion.
"Being locked in a tower for 18 years, it's reasonable you never learned or read up on this," Varian rubs the back of his neck.
"On what? What is it, guys? You can tell me," Rapunzel gestures to herself. The two look at each other again and then back at her.
"Rapunzel...I think you might be pregnant."
Her eyes widen slowly once Varian's words leave his lips.
"Pregnant...as in-"
"Hey Blondie!" Everyone freezes up as Eugene walks down the hall. Once he reaches his wife, he kisses her on the forehead. "Hey Brownie, Goggles. Say, I know I've asked you every year, but do you-"
"No, we have not made any anti-aging formulas, skin-tightening serums, or age creams," The two say in unison. Harmony rolls her eyes. He's asked this for four years straight, and the answer has always been the same.
Rapunzel chuckles nervously at him. "Eugene! I was just...checking up on Varian and Harmony on the Rooster!"
"Oh really?" He smiles at the two, who look away nervously. They could tell that Rapunzel didn't want to tell him just yet.
"Yeah...oh, look at the time! We gotta go...find some more parts!"
"Yeah..." Varian nods in agreement with her. "We're just...gonna go!"
The two run off in the opposite direction and Eugene turns to Rapunzel. "Huh. Well, I guess I'll go back to guard training. Those guys work up a sweat with Max on the job! Well, I help out too..."
He walks off, leaving a worried Rapunzel behind.
"What do I do, you guys?" Rapunzel paces in front of Varian and Harmony in her lab after dinner. The two watch her pace, Pascal squeaking in concern. "How am I supposed to tell Eugene? This is a such a big step in our lives together..."
"Well, did you ever talk to him about it?" Harmony asks while watching her sister.
"We did back when we were at the House of Yesterday's Tomorrow, but nothing beyond that..." Rapunzel taps her chin. "We were focused on finding our destinies, and...well, we all know what happened when we returned back to Corona."
"Being a child was...an experience," Varian glances away.
"Not as much as meeting you in the past," Harmony smiles fondly at the memory. "Anyway, you're gonna look different in a few months time, Rapunzel. That's not exactly something you can hide from your own husband for the next few months."
"But I'm not sure if Eugene is even ready," Rapunzel frowns slightly. "And I promised that we wouldn't keep things secret anymore. I'm worried that he'll think he's getting older again, his birthday is already coming up!"
She doesn't even have Cassandra to help her with this problem like she used to do for her...
"This is Eugene, Rapunzel. I'm sure he'll get used to the idea," Varian speaks up while holding Ruddiger. He jumps out of the alchemist's hands and runs towards the bookcase. He looks up and sees a basket of apples, licking his lips.
"Yeah. You guys can handle anything," Harmony smiles at her. "I mean, just take a look at any adventure we had from your journal!"
"You know what? You're right." Rapunzel smiles back at them. "I shouldn't let this affect my relationship with Eugene, I love him. You guys are the best," She pulls them in for a hug and they return it. Suddenly the bookcase falls, causing a loud crash. Ruddiger is smiling sheepishly inside the basket of apples.
"Ruddiger..." Varian sighs slightly.
Before she told Eugene anything, Rapunzel decided to pay a visit to the medic, just to make sure it's not a false alarm. Harmony of course went with her sister to support her, along with Pascal and Daisy. She looks across her nervous sister as she's already gone through the tests. They're just now waiting on the results.
"Ever since Eugene and I have been married," Rapunzel speaks up, causing everyone to look at her. "I don't think we ever had a time to talk further about this. We've been so busy with our new lives...I didn't imagine this coming up so soon. And now it is, and...it's crazy and new to me."
Harmony stands up and goes over to her sister's side, sitting next to her. "Punzie, I've seen you go through much stronger and harder times in your life in just the first 2 years that I really knew you. And I was going through my own problems as well. But if there's one thing I know about you, is that if you are pregnant...you'll be a great mom."
Pascal nods in agreement, squeaking as Daisy flies around the two brunettes with a chirp. Rapunzel hums slightly for the encouragement.
"Thanks, you guys."
The door opens and they look up to see the medic standing in the doorway. "Your highnesses?"
"Alright, doctor..." Harmony takes a deep breath, arms crossed. "What's the verdict?"
"Congratulations, Queen Rapunzel, you're pregnant!"
"R-Really?!" Rapunzel stammers, gasping sharply. "Oh my gosh..."
"I'm so happy for you, big sis," Harmony turns to smile at her. A knock is heard at the door and Varian opens it up.
"Sorry I'm late, Ruddiger was being chased by Max for stealing one of his apples," He shakes his head fondly, closing the door behind him. "So...?"
"She's pregnant!"
"Wow! That's great news, Rapunzel," Varian smiles softly.
"It is, but...I just wish I knew how to tell Eugene..." Rapunzel smiles weakly.
"Hey..." Harmony rubs her chin in thought. "There's no reason why you can't tell him on his birthday! It'll be a great surprise!"
"And if it's a bad one?" Rapunzel smirks slightly at her.
"If he takes it the wrong way, at least he'll have a cake to soften the blow!"
In just a few days, the preparations for Eugene's birthday are almost ready, and Rapunzel is on top of it to make sure nothing goes wrong. After all, he still doesn't know what's going on—and it was getting harder to hide her pregnancy from him. Sometimes she has to wake up early to go use another bathroom so that he doesn't hear her morning sickness. And usually, she went for Harmony and Varian's bedroom, since they were the only people besides Pascal and Daisy that knew the truth. She wanted to keep the people who knew a limited amount, hence why she didn't tell her parents or anyone who would tell them.
As for Cassandra, she does miss her best friend, but she has to let Cass figure out her own destiny. She did mention Eugene's birthday to her from her last letter, knowing that Cassandra would poke fun at it. Not as harsh as usual, but just enough to keep her relationship with him.
Rapunzel and Harmony are walking down the hall while the older sister is holding a scroll, which is a list of things to be checked off.
"Okay, decorations are being set up, food is being prepared..." The two stop near the kitchen, peeking in to see Shorty swimming in the batter. He looks up and sees them, waving.
"Happy birthday!"
Both of them gag, looking away. "Okay...cake needs to be remade..."
"What about the...hmm hmm?" Harmony nudges her and Rapunzel blinks in realization.
"Oh! Right! Let's just say I've planned a little...something in my present for him," She winks at her sister. She really hopes that Eugene won't freak out too much, she and Harmony spent a lot of time figuring out how to break the news to him... "And, just to be sure, there's no-"
"You ask me this every year, and I've given you the same answer," Harmony rolls her eyes in amusement. "No, there is no evil to crash the party."
When the moonstone was given back to her, she retained all the abilities she had previously, including being able to sense evil.
"I know, but I'm asking on Eugene's part," Rapunzel smiles a bit. After his 26th birthday, no one, including Eugene, wanted to take any chances. So guess who mostly everyone comes to when their own birthday comes around? "Now that I'm thinking about how this is gonna go, I've gotten hungry...I need a-"
A servant walks by with an apple and Pascal snatches it with his tongue, giving it to her. "A nice shiny apple! Thanks Pascal!"
He salutes to her as she takes a bite.
"It'll be fine. I'm sure he'll enjoy the surprise."
"Who'll enjoy the surprise?" Eugene walks up to them and Rapunzel quickly gives Harmony the paper.
"...Harmi and Varian! Their anniversary is coming up, and I'm throwing them a surprise party for it!"
"Then why is Brownie aware of it?" He raises a brow as Harmony facepalms.
"She's...helping me plan it so that Varian doesn't get suspicious! You know how much I love planning these kind of things!" Rapunzel chuckles nervously as they walk around him, running down the hall. Eugene blinks at them and shrugs it off.
"...You need to stop using anniversaries as an excuse for surprise parties," Harmony states after they're far away from him.
"I know, but everybody loves a good party," Rapunzel smiles eagerly at her. "And I actually have been planning something for you and Vari-"
"Wow, you know what? I need to go check on the guest list," Harmony's cheeks turn a deep red out of embarrassment. "See you later!"
She runs off, hearing Rapunzel's giggling. As an older sister, she's learned how to tease properly...and having help from Cassandra doesn't hurt either.
Soon, the birthday party is underway, and Rapunzel is probably the most nervous that she's ever been in her life...this could go down either way, but whatever the outcome, she knows that she has friends and family to support her. Even if some aren't present like Vex, Stalyan, or Vigor. Cassandra even came as a surprise (though Eugene probably wouldn't like it at first).
Eugene is currently opening presents, and he decided to open Rapunzel's last. Lance obviously passed his off as a shared gift with someone else, and this year he decided to pick Harmony...even though clearly Eugene knows that it was just her. Every time!
"Vari!" Harmony smiles as he approaches her. "Let me guess, Ruddiger tried to get into Max's stable to steal an apple again?"
"Yup..." He sighs slightly. "Don't get me wrong, Ruddiger's great, but he has a knack for causing trouble almost everywhere. Did I miss anything?"
"No, he hasn't figured it out yet. We didn't even get to cake."
After a while, he finally gets to Rapunzel's present, which Harmony had to help her with so that Eugene could figure it out for himself. He opens it up and finds...
A piece of bread.
"Bread?"
"Kind of mundane..."
"Okay," He chuckles, looking up at Rapunzel. "Is this some kind of joke? Or a hint that I need to eat more grains?"
"Nope! Harmi baked it," Rapunzel gestures to herself.
"Fresh from the oven," She winks slyly. Eugene rubs his chin as others are confused by the present. Well, except for Varian since he knows where this is going.
"Why would you bake a bun from the oven...?" He furrows his eyebrows at them as they have innocent looks. He blinks slowly, remembering that Rapunzel is usually gone in the morning lately, and she did look a little nauseous sometimes. And her appetite changed too. "Wait...Blondie, you're...?"
"Yep...I'm pregnant, Eugene," Rapunzel smiles, earning gasps from everyone. Arianna clasps her hands happily as Frederic is clapping.
"Congratulations, you two. You'll make wonderful parents."
"P-Parents...heh..." Eugene straight up faints and Rapunzel gasps, bending down to him.
"Eugene!"
"I'm okay," He murmurs, being helped by Harmony, Rapunzel, Varian, and Cassandra.
"Good luck, Fitzherbert, and I stress that a lot," Cass states and he snaps out of it.
"This is great!" He grins widely at Rapunzel, who grins happily. "I'll get to teach them how to maintain good looks, and how to pick locks, and how to insult Cassandra-"
"Ah dah dah dah, nothing mean," Rapunzel warns him. "But you're not mad?"
"Mad?" He stands up incredibly, smiling down at her. "Sunshine, this is the next chapter of our lives. As long as I'm with you, I'll always be okay with what happens. I mean, sure, there was that whole...Zhan Tiri thing. That Great Tree maze wasn't so great either. And then there was Vigor, ugh, the con chimp. And-"
Rapunzel reaches forward and hugs him, smiling as she tries not to cry. He pauses and smiles down at her, hugging her back. Everyone surrounds them to share their happiness, and to congratulate them. Rapunzel didn't know why she was worried.
She has everything she wants right here.
