A/N: A Third Behind Closed Doors Chapter!
These chapters focus on the individual relationships of our side characters – Hanabusa and Ruuka, Senri and Takuma, Rima and Sayori, Kaname and Yuuki, and, just for the hell of it, the wondrous Seiren. I suspect that she has an interesting love life – when she's off duty, that is. (which is… when? Haha, silly Autumn.)
This one is Kaname and Yuuki. I've put this chapter in here for plot purposes (which means the story will be getting close to done – but, there might be another if my creative brain has any say) and it alludes to the Kain family. We've seen Kaname be that controlling jerk to his subordinates, mistreat a few of them and, seen a glimpse of the love he has for Yuuki. Yuuki is a minor character in this but, she plays a role in that she could drive a wedge between our lovers. I might focus on the bond they have but, until it's in here, I'll be focusing on Yuuki rather than Kaname.
There're are many reasons that I'm writing these chapters.
Some person might actually want my insight on what the hell is going on with their favorite characters. Yuuki and Kaname are usually right in the fan fictions, the main characters of the series, and always meddling in everything. Face it, they meddle. I do believe that Kaname and Yuuki are foils of each other – one rules with manipulations and one with kindness. Have you noticed that I've used a lot of foils myself?
I'm creating a poll on how far I should take Kain and Zero's fun time. As such, depending on how quickly I receive answers needed for the poll (I have one kind of answer but, I need two more before I dare to even enter that), you may have a second chapter coming your way this week. What I want to know is how far you guys want me to take it if the answer is yes. If the answer is no, I'll allude (like I've done for Ruuka and Adiou) and say no more on the subject.
This will explain the plot – I like having options. It also questions Yuuki's sanity (I mean, my Kaname? He's kind of a jerk!), Kaname's focus and purposes and, may or may not further the development of dramatic irony – we might learn more of Kain's parents and the blood bond.
Those are my reasons. Hopefully, they make sense and it's less me just rambling. Enjoy?
Yuuki found her husband in the library, his heavy-set gaze on the chessboard. She studied it, two pawns remaining close together. One of the black castles and a black knight that he had on the board since she could remember finally parted, taking a pawn from the white team. The other black bishop rested next to a black pawn. She followed his gaze to the black bishop and the white knight – their movements at a stalemate.
"Really, Kaname?" He held out his hand toward her, lightly pressing it to his lips. "Playing with love lives? Hasn't anyone told you that people are not a game to be controlled?"
"On the contrary." Kaname answered, finally softening and studying his wife. "I find that if we do not control the game, someone else does."
"Which is a nice way of saying that you'd rather be a control freak." Her voice was light as she stated it. He quirked a smirk, twirling her and pulling her onto his lap.
"You know me too well."
"Better than you know yourself, I'm afraid." She turned away, pressing her finger to her lip. Kaname followed in suit. "What's the play?"
"Honestly, I don't know." Kaname pinched the bridge of his nose.
"You want Zero controlled, right?" Yuuki asked, her voice meek.
"Yes. I thought Kain would be the better option but… Zero hasn't made a move nor told Kain anything about it. If I can trust Kain." He picked up the white knight.
"They move in L shapes, don't they?" Yuuki asked.
"Yes."
"And bishops diagonally?"
"Yes."
"Then Kain will never control him. Not really. Yet, he can control Kain." Kaname raised an eyebrow. Yuuki set the knight down, moving it two spaces and the bishop following. Kaname bit his lip, a pinprick of blood protruding out. If Kain were to turn white, would he be willing to go against him? "Check."
"Almost checkmate."
"Almost but, not quite. And, don't forget, the Queen remains."
"Anything to protect the King." Kaname answered, squeezing Yuuki slightly and pressing his lips to her forehead. "When did you get so good at chess?"
"Aidou's been teaching me." She scrunched her face. "I mean, he's good but… I don't love the analogies that go along with it."
"Analogy is the most useful, I find." Kaname set the white knight back to where it was, resting his head on her shoulder. "What would you do?"
Yuuki traced the options with her finger, mouthing words as she did so. Kaname watched her rather than her finger, amused. She stood and grabbed a blue napkin and another chessboard, setting the napkin between the two. There, she placed the black bishop and the finally parted black knight. Kaname raised an eyebrow.
"That's not how chess works." Kaname answered.
"Honestly." She shook her head. "We live in a world, Kaname. Just because all your plans are chess related doesn't mean that the planet is chess related."
"So… you're suggesting… What, exactly?"
"That this is one country." Yuuki pointed to the other. "And this another."
"It doesn't solve the white knight."
Yuuki held up a finger and placed the black castle that had been abandoned next to the knight. "More warning."
Kaname gripped her tight, trying to find any fault with this theoretical plan. "He won't be able to stop the knight, but he can be far enough to keep a watch. If he lines up perfectly, the knight won't be a threat."
Kaname smiled and pressed his lips against her cheek. "Just one more issue. The bond."
"They're not completely bonded yet." Yuuki replied.
"Every day bishops alone with knight, he learns to care." Kaname thought of another reason. "And, we don't know that they're not yet completely bonded."
"That is where you've always overestimated him. He's always cared – just not enough to do anything about anything."
"You still haven't addressed the other issue."
"Did you know that Ruuka was bonded to Aidou before she informed us?"
"Yes."
Yuuki shifted herself, exposing long faded scars. Kaname nodded. "You would feel it, wouldn't you?"
"His own mission is influenced by me." Yuuki stated matter-of-factly, returning to her original angle. Her face softened. "Maybe if I could be happier, he'd feel happier."
"Is there anything I can do to make you happier?"
Yuuki shook her head. "I'm happy as I am."
"Then, it's the knowledge that you're happy with me." He kissed down her neck, his fangs brushing against her skin. "Which has made him an issue."
"Yes, he is a pest. But, he does no harm. We move enough, we have our spies. And," Yuuki fixed him with a tired but firm stare, "if we moved against him rather than to protect ourselves, we'd lose more than one person."
Kaname hunched his shoulders, not daring to seek her embrace. She leaned against him, silent for a moment. "What would happen if they were bonded to each other?"
He tried to remove the thoughts of his intentions as the idea formed. Instead, he thought only about the facts. "All secrets, memories, emotions… They'd be connected. Like one life flowing from one to another."
"I knew that." Yuuki squirmed. "I mean about the distance."
"It doesn't matter the distance. What matters is to remain bonded." Kaname swallowed the thought, his eyes betraying him as he glanced to the pair on the further board. He was lucky Yuuki hadn't noticed – or pretended not to. "It's about time that we discussed what to do."
"About him?" Yuuki asked as one of their butlers returned with a drink she had asked for.
"Yes." He slipped out his phone, glaring at the screen. Two thirty in the vampire morning. Had he really stayed up this late? He had to start the ball rolling. Still, he unlocked it, scrolling to find Ichijo's name. He sent Emergency meeting. Tomorrow night.
He sent the same to Kain. Yuuki sighed. "Really? You know Aidou's going to have a bird if his cousin's invited to a meeting and he's not."
"Need for secrecy." He played with Yuuki's fingers. He was surprised that Kain was calling him. He thought it to be a butt dial as his lips pressed against hers. The second time he called, Kaname thought it would suit him well to learn to wait. The third time, Yuuki pushed Kaname off her, standing.
"Answer it."
He pulled her back onto his lap, pressing the receiver to his ear. "Kain."
"What's it concerning?"
Kaname felt a pang of regret as he glanced at the game plan. After all, Kain was his most forthright advisor. "You know how you were saying that you'd like to expand your company into America?"
He could almost see Kain furrowing his brows, trying to find sense in the logic. "Yes…"
"I've found an opportunity to do just that."
"I've already spoken to my advisors. They don't need another-"
"I misspoke." Kaname answered. "I meant for your charity."
Again, he could see a figure of Kain leaning against a wall or a door, relaxing slightly. "What kind of opportunity?"
"The kind where you travel and help."
"Who would I be meeting with? When? Crowded area? Private? Where's my accommodations? Where would I be starting? Are they expanding everywhere? How many companies involved?"
Kaname held the receiver away from his ear, Yuuki rubbing his temples. He muted himself and put Kain on speaker, asking every question he could come up with.
"Why is he acting so paranoid?" Yuuki asked.
"You haven't been around him long enough." He wondered if he should reveal Kain's full past to Yuuki – the true past. Deciding against it, he smiled brightly at his wife. "Leave it to Kain to not care two cents about anything that really matters yet, have this go on when it's something important to him."
"Won't he come back when it starts?"
"He'll split his time between Japan and America."
Kaname pressed a finger to his lips as he unmuted himself. Kain asked his final question: 'can I bring Gonkuro?' Kaname paused.
"You'd be meeting with different CEO's – all of whom I have screened. You could leave when convenient. Obviously, it'd be private with two attendants – one of yours, one of his. You'd be starting in New York. They plan to expand with the need of the work force. There's only three – they're open to you being a silent partner." He answered all of Kain's normal questions, stopping at the last. "Are you sure you want to bring Gonkuro with you? He's rather old."
"He's family."
"So's Aidou."
"Not that kind of family. Gonkuro can kill a man with a simple twitch. Aidou would run away."
"What's he talking about?" Yuuki questioned. Kaname shrugged, ignoring the loyalty of the bond.
"Isn't it about time to replace him?"
"When he's dead, yes."
"Kain, he's a thousand years old."
"He's only… Sixty-seven?"
"Try seventy-three." Yuuki opened her mouth for another question, but closed it when Kaname shook his head. Kain was silent on the other end. "Still there?"
"He can't be seventy-three." Kain retorted.
"He is."
Deciding not to fight it, Kain grumbled. "I guess I could bring along one of the children with him but… I'm taking him with me."
"Then it's decided. We'll talk the details tomorrow."
"Agreed." They hung up at the same time.
Kaname sighed. "Video conferences."
"Why didn't you have it in place?" Yuuki asked.
"Time is of the essence." Kaname returned. Yuuki nodded, leaving the room quickly with a drink. She wandered down the hall, glad of the solitude and distance from Kaname. Even as she tried to remember the life she had led when she was a child, she couldn't remember a time when he would let her pull off one of his plans. Help, plan it, sure. But help?
She tried to remember if she had ever come across an American business man. Surely, Jiro and Haruka had met many. Even as a Cross, she was more useful.
"Lady Yuuki?" One of the servant girls called out. Yuuki smiled at them, envious of their ability to be useful for a cause.
A/N: Short chapter. This is more just insight of what I have planned for Kain and Zero. Still, the poll is on: how detailed should I be if yes, I should go into detail of fun time?
