Chapter 20
Here it is! Some thought this day would never come. I kinda did too, Aha! Thank you everyone for all of the support. I hope you like the finale chapter of Red Hot
Four months, that's how long it took Gabby to finally feel like she was getting back to her old self. In fact, you could say she was even better than her old self.
She went to see Dr. Charles twice a week and together they worked through the trauma of her kidnapping and everything that happened in that basement. As well as worked through the old scares left behind from her young relationship with Luke.
Despite feeling better, Gabby decided to drop their visits. Keeping them to once a week, it was good to check in and talk about any rough days she had while on the job.
Going to therapy had also made her more open at home with Matt. While before she would bottle up her feeling until she exploded, now she talked things out with him.
Gabby continued her PIC duties as well, knowing that Shay had her back always.
"Truck 81, Squad 3, Ambulance 61 Car accident."
There were three cars involved in the pile up, Gabby and Shay split up to cover all the damage.
"Dawson!" Severide yelled over the noise of the scene.
She jogged over to him, taking in the sports car that was crushed. She looked inside to see two ten boys bloodied up in the front seats.
"Hey, can you guys hear me? What are you names?"
She heard a groan but other than that there wasn't a response from either of them.
Severide stood beside her. "What do you think?"
Gabby took another look inside the car. "The car is completely trapping them inside. Best guess, they both have a fifty fifty shot what when you pull them out of there, they'll die."
Severide bowed his head. "Crush syndrome."
Gabby nodded. Most of the time, people don't survive it. The accident only happened fifteen minutes ago, there was a good chance they could save them both.
"I'll start prepping the IV's. They'll both need to be hook up before you take them from the car." Gabby turned to do just that, having to run back to the ambo for a second IV kit.
"Dawson." She turned. "Who first."
Taking another look inside the car, she tried to asses which of the boys was in the worst shape. After doing an assessment of each boy she stood tall.
"Driver has it the worst with the steering wheel pushing into his stomach. Go for the passenger first, he has a better chance of survival."
It was moments like these that any first responder loathed. When they had to pick one life other another.
"Ok." Severide nodded. "We'll start to cut him out and wait for your signal on the meds. Tony, get me the jaws!"
They moved fast and got the first boy out. Dawson attended to him, providing him with the best care she could. He wasn't stabled, but he wasn't crashing either.
Gabby called Shay over to help with the second patient while she prepared the first boy for transport. When they were ready they had to get going, even though the driver was still stuck, an IV pumping medicine into his system.
At the end of the day, they all walked away knowing that they did everything they could to save those boys.
.
Gabby snuck up behind Matt, dropping a kiss to his neck. "Dinner will be ready soon. What you are looking at?"
He was on his laptop, looking through some file.
"Just some paper work I have to catch up on. Connie's replacement lost a couple of the files from last week, just trying to figure out which ones for I can send in second copies."
"You have to do that right now?"
Matt smiled, closing his laptop and pushing his chair back so he could pull her into his lap. Gabby smiled, wrapping her arms around his neck.
"Have something better in mind?" His smiled dropped as he watched her eyes shift nervously. "Gabby?"
"I wanted to talk to you about something."
"Ok."
She stood to pull out the chair and take the seat beside him. She took a deep breath reaching out to grab his hand.
"We've been through a lot Matt. We've handled it together, no matter what. I know it's only made us stronger. Ever since a couple years back I feel like there is this one thing that we haven't really recovered from yet."
Matt remained quiet, he tried to decipher what it was she could be talking about.
"I love you." She smiled brightly. "You're my family and I want more with you. I want us to have a baby."
Ever since her miscarriage and the fight that almost broke them up years ago. The topics of babies and starting a family hadn't come up again. She knew Matt was worried what her being pregnant could mean. What the risks were.
"I want that too." He told her. "More than anything, I want to have babies with you. To start our family."
"You're supposed to be a dad, Matt. I saw you with the Darton boys, you loved them so much. I want to be able to give that to you. There might be some minimal risks because of last time."
"I won't lose you Gabby. I can't."
"We'll take it slow. Meet with my OBGYN, see what our options are. We'll do it together this time."
Matt smiled. "I'd like that."
"Me too." She leaned in, kissing him.
Matt pulled Gabby back to his lap. Holding her body in his arms. They didn't get much time before the timer on the stove interrupted them.
"I got to get that." Gabby muttered into his mouth.
"You're amazing Gabriella Dawson."
"I love you Matt."
.
"Ambulance 61 how far out are you?'
"61 to main, we are three minutes out."
"Copy."
"So you and Severide are really going to do it huh?"
"Renne got in the way last time. Now there is no one holding us back."
"I'm happy for you say. You've wanted this for a long time."
"So have you. If we get pregnant around the same time, the boys wouldn't know what to do without us."
Gabby snickered. "Last week Otis came to me about this lump on his ass." Shay pulled a face. "Tick for his and Cruz's camping trip."
"Uhh. I don't know how many times I've told them to stop coming to us with their little bumps and scrapes."
"Meh, gives me fun stories to tell at Mollys on Friday nights."
"Woah! Do you see that?"
Gabby looked up at the sky. Black smoke curled above her.
"That's not good."
Ambulance 61 pulled onto the scene and the two medics jumped out. Gabby did a sweep for Matt, not seeing him among the fire fighters outside.
Looking at the house, Gabby had to blink against the flames. They burned red hot, the heat from the fire warming her skin from a distance.
She heard the boys over the radios, they'd found the family and were coming out. Gabby watched, waiting to help the poor family who'd been trapped inside the raging fire.
Herrmann came out with the first vicim, a little girl around three years old. Gabby took her and immediately started to asses her, getting an oxygen asked on her. There was an older brother brought out next.
Shay worked beside her on him. Both were full of suet, but not lasting damage to their lungs or skin.
Severide and Casey came out last, carrying two older men. The little girl cried out for her dads upon seeing them. Both men were alright, the taller one had a first degree burn on his hand, but that was the worst of it.
As Gabby continued to look after the family of four, she took a moment to look over the little girls head toward the group of fire fighters.
Matt was already looking back at her, his eyes holding all of his love for her. As Gabby looked back, she knew her eyes were conveying the same thing.
She knew they were thinking the same thing. As water sprayed onto the home behind them, as steam rolled into the streets dampening their skin. As the adrenaline of the call slowly started to leave their systems. Nothing was more apparent to them than this.
Fire house 51 was their home, and they were each others family.
