Chapter 19: Attack on Hokkaido

Out in the ocean, two fisherman in Osaka were doing their usual work were caught unaware by an immense tsunami. As their boat capsized, a crab-like humanoid emerged from the ocean. This was Crab Bubbler, and he was responsible for the sudden tsunami. He approached the Meteorological Agency Otaru, where several researchers were noting the incident. As it turned out, Osaka was not Crab Bubbler's first attack. He had also struck in Kyushu and Shikoku.

While the going theory for anyone who didn't know about Shocker was that an undersea earthquake was responsible, it was noted that the seismographs at all nearby observation posts had been mysteriously destroyed, preventing anyone from picking up the epicenter or scale of the quakes. One of the two researchers at the agency noted that their colleagues had stated that electrical rooms have also been destroyed. "If it was just a bunch of earthquakes it would be one thing," the researcher said, "But why all the sabotage?"

As they talked, Crab Bubbler broke into the agency's electrical room and looked around. Seeing no one, he snipped the cables to short out the power to the center. When one of the researchers came to look into the problem, Crab Bubbler attacked him using bubbles shot out of his mouth, which turned out to be very corrosive. The other researcher noted something was wrong, but before he could check it out he was confronted by Combatmen. He tried to attack them, only to get shot by special guns containing the same corrosive bubbles.

Ren stopped by the racing club, seeing only Tobei there. "Where's everyone else?" "Off to Hokkaido," Tobei said, "Eclair's idea. Something about checking out the sea." "I doubt they'll be doing a lot of swimming," Ren noted, "There's been a ban on it due to all the tsunamis with unknown epicenters." Tobei lit his pipe as he thought. "Must be why Eclair insisted on going. The FBI must have picked up something bizarre about the incidents. And where there's bizarre incidents… There's usually Shocker."

"It's just too bad we can't go swimming while we're out here," Malty said, "I had a really cute swimsuit I wanted to show off." "Maybe we'll get a chance once we figure out what's going on," Raphtalia assured her, "But in the meantime, there's a ban on swimming. Anyway, by now Tobei should have gotten in contact with Ren so that he can join us." Motoyasu was looking bummed. "Still upset we haven't found anything?," Naofumi asked. He patted his friend on the shoulder. "Don't worry, as long as Shocker has bases to raid, we'll always get another chance."

Meanwhile, Great Leader was addressing the agents at Crab Bubbler's hideout. 'I have just received a report on the successful destruction of the seismograph at the Otaru branch of the Meteorological Agency. Now we can move forward with our latest plan. After our successful experiments in Kyushu, Shikoku, and Osaka, we can use our new underwater bombs, more powerful than the atomic bomb, at Muroran Peninsula. This will cause a massive tsunami that will devastate Japan!'

The assembled agents nodded. 'Remember,' Great Leader continued, 'Until this operation succeeds, it must remain a secret! Have Crab Bubbler continue to keep watch on ground.' The lead Combatman nodded and gave a salute. They had to move quite a number of resources and personnel from other branches as of late, and with the loss of the missile base, they were really pulling everything they had to finally have a successful plan.

Out on a remote island off the coast of Hokkaido, Crab Bubbler executed a lone diver who was getting too close, then looked up to see the racing club nearby as well. He quickly grabbed the lifeless body and hid with it, but left behind the scuba tank, which Raphtalia was quick to spot. Malty tapped her shoulder and pointed out the visible leg of the hapless diver. "We may want to move away and contact Naofumi," she noted. Raphtalia nodded, but not before picking up a small transceiver. As Crab Bubbler watched them leave, he cursed. "That's our special transceiver. I'll need to retrieve it somehow."

Eclair reported the presence of the transceiver to Ren as he came in by boat. While the group was distracted, Crab Bubbler managed to retrieve it and headed back. Out on the ocean, Ren spotted a couple of Combatmen driving a boat of their own. He stood up. "Henshin!" The speeding boat fueled the Typhoon, transforming him into Kamen Rider 2. He leapt to the other boat and quickly knocked out one of the Combatmen, throwing him into the ocean. He grabbed the other by the head and slammed him into the windshield. "Keep driving!"

The Combatman did so. Once 2 noticed Crab Bubbler on the shore, he waited until he was close enough, then leapt to confront him. Crab Bubbler tried to radio in on the transceiver, only to learn that Kamen Rider 1 had noticed the intrusion and went after him. Crab Bubbler tried to attack with his corrosive bubbles, but 1 simply ducked to avoid the attack. 2 disarmed the Combatmen and grabbed one of their guns, pointing it at Crab Bubbler. "So, cyborg, are you immune to your own attack?" Judging from the way Crab Bubbler was backing up, he wasn't. He quickly dove into the sea to escape.

"Looks like Shocker was behind the tsunamis," 1 noted, "And they destroyed the seismographs to hide the location of their hideout." "Which means up until now everything was just an experiment," 2 realized, "They intend to make a much larger one." 1 held up the transceiver. "We can follow the signal from this to find that hideout. Wait…" He held it up to his ear and heard a distinct ticking. He quickly threw the transceiver away then ducked along with 2, an explosion going off from the transceiver. "Scratch that last statement," 1 said in annoyance.

"I apologize for the theft of the transceiver," Crab Bubbler said to Great Leader, "I made sure to detonate it right afterward." 'It won't be enough,' Great Leader noted, 'The Kamen Riders always find a way to discover our hidden lairs. They can still track the transmission signal. What do you intend to do about that? A direction finder is all they would need!' Crab Bubbler nodded. "I understand. I will make for the Sapporo branch immediately and destroy the seismograph there."

'Good,' Great Leader said, 'You scientists get to work as well. We must up our timetable if we hope to stay a step ahead of the Riders. Set up the explosives immediately.' "Of course," one of the scientists said, "But even at our fastest it would still take two hours." 'Very well,' Great Leader permitted, 'Then in two hours, we will create a huge tsunami in sea of Otaru!' The scientists nodded and got to work.

Just as Great Leader suspected, enough of the transceiver remained that Naofumi's plan of tracing the signal could still work. They just had to find the right cycle. He smirked. "I have it. UHF 384 megacycle. Raphtalia nodded. "Now just need to use a large direction finder, and we'll have the location of Shocker's hideout!" Naofumi nodded. "You and the others deal with that. Me and Ren will head for the seismograph in Sapporo. Shocker is cornered right now, meaning they'll be upping their timetable." Raphtalia nodded.

As the duo left, Raphtalia explained the plan to the others. "We'll contact a few friends who are ham radio enthusiasts. We send them an urgent call to ask for the direction in relation to the radio waves. As I call them out, I'll need you to mark the locations on this map." Rishia nodded. "That way we can triangulate the position of the hideout. Brilliant." Raphtalia nodded, and the group got to work immediately.

Meanwhile, Naofumi and Ren drove up to the agency only to run into a crowd of people standing at the entrance, trying to get a look inside. "I don't like the looks of this," Naofumi said, "We might be too late." Fortunately, some kids ran up to the duo and pointed out a white vehicle which Crab Bubbler and some Combatmen were getting into. "Thanks," Naofumi said, and the two Riders drove after the vehicle. As they drove, they transformed into Kamen Riders 1 and 2.

The vehicle eventually stopped as Crab Bubbler made ready to confront the two Riders. The two Combatmen tried shooting at them with the bubble guns, but they quickly leapt out of the way and onto a nearby roof, before leaping down to disarm them. Crab Bubbler tried his own attack, only for 2 to block it with a hapless Combatman. 1 then started to fight Crab Bubbler while 2 dealt with the lead Combatman. After getting the grunt in a choke hold he said, "Care to save us some work and tell us where your hideout is?" He heard a splash, and saw that Crab Bubbler had escaped into the sea again.

Now back in his hideout, Crab Bubbler awaited confirmation of the plan. A scientist approached him. "Everything is order, commander. The tsunami will hit in ten minutes." "Excellent," Crab Bubbler said, "Great Leader, we're ready." 'Then you are free to make your escape,' Great Leader said. As they did so, they had no idea that the racing club was contacting the twin Riders about the hideout's location. As the agents prepared to leave, they were stopped by the twin Riders coming in.

"Damn you!," Crab Bubbler said, "We were just seven minutes away from victory!" He leapt over to the emergency switch to detonate them prematurely, only to be stopped by 2 and he started to wrench Crab Bubbler's claw off the switch before knocking him away. The fight quickly lead back to the surface, 2 leaping to get ahead of Crab Bubbler. "I kinda had to miss out on your predecessor's demise," he said, "So I need to make up for it here and now." The two battled as 1 finished off the Combatmen inside the hideout.

Crab Bubbler finally tagged 2 with his bubbles, but this time they were meant to only blind. Crab Bubbler laughed. "Can't see now, can you?" He tried to attack, only for 2 to keep dodging the attacks, eventually causing the giant enemy crab to smack his claw against a solid, causing pain. "I can still hear you!," 2 pointed out. He struck Crab Bubbler a few times, then charged more power into his fist. "Rider Punch!" The impact sent Crab Bubbler sailing against the rocks, where he exploded on impact. "That's new," 2 noted, wiping away the bubbles.

With the hideout disabled and the bombs rendered useless, Naofumi offered a few files to Motoyasu for his perusal at a later time. In the meantime, the group was finally free to enjoy their vacation in Hokkaido. The girls were glad to be able to show off their swimsuits at long last. With another heavy blow dealt to Shocker, it was great for the group to be able to find some time to relax, since they knew they'd have to deal with Shocker again before long.

To be continued…

And so we get the first ever Rider Punch, one of the six essential finisher of the Kamen Rider (the others being the chop, the slash, the shoot, the thrust, and of course the kick). And one of the first instances of a monster exploding after being defeated (I think there was at least one more prior to this chapter). Anyway, more action next chapter. Read and review.
