The dirt road in front of them seemed endless, with grass fields lining the sides. They had been driving down this road for a while now and no signs for even landmarks had appeared. Shadow was skating a bit ahead of the van. Manic checked the coordinates again, making sure they were on the right track. Sure enough, the spot was right ahead of them.

Manic turned back in his seat to look at Tails. Halfway through the drive, he had started tapping at the Miles Electric and hadn't stopped since. "Hey, Tails. What'cha doin' over there?"

The fox looked up at him. "I'm just making sure everything is ready to go for the mission. It's not like I have much to do right now anyway."

He went back to his work and Manic turned back to the front. "You think he's okay?"

"I sure hope so," his sister said next to him. "I still feel bad about what happened at Sanctuary."

"Don't worry about that," Tails called from the back. "He was saying the same thing."

Sonia smiled. He had forgiven them. "Thanks a lot, Tails."

"No prob."

Manic looked forward at the ebony hedgehog ahead of them. "Is he gonna be okay?"

Tails spoke up. "He will be when we get Sonic back, safe and sound. He feels like it's his fault Sonic was taken."

Sonia was surprised. "Why's that?"

"Well, the poor guy's been through a lot of hardships. He doesn't like talking about it, but he lost his best friend 53 years ago."

Sonia and Manic exchanged sad looks. Manic took out his drumsticks and beat them against the dash. "So what do you think it'll be like when we get to the base?"

"I don't know." She took her eyes off the road to look at her brother. "But we need to get Sonic back, and his medallion too."

"And we need to make sure he doesn't get ours too," Manic added, tapping his own.

"Right. And there's the fact of his defenseeeee- Woah!" She was interrupted by a laser shot at the van, causing her to swerve. "What was that?!"

Right then, ten robots showed up out of nowhere. At least, they looked like robots. They had large bodies and their arms had different weapons of them. They had wheels and jets so that they could keep up with the van. But what really stood out was the strange purple aura they seemed to be made of.

"What type of robot is that?" Tails had come up to the front now and was gawking out the window with the others.

"I don't now but they're toast! Someone take the wheel." Without waiting for an answer, Sonia jumped out of her seat and raced over to the sunroof of the van.

"Be careful." Manic, who had dived for the wheel when Sonia had left, yelled.

"Of course." The hedgehog reached up to her medallion, revealing her gun and popped out of the top of the van only to have to duck down again as one of the robots fired at her. She was about to shoot when Shadow suddenly started throwing Chaos Spears at them. When all the robots were taken care of, Sonia bounced into the seat next to Manic, who was now driving. "Wow."

"You said it, sis."

"Kinda reminds me of those Dark Gaia monsters."

"Huh?"

Tails snapped his head back up to the two hedgehogs. Had he said that out loud? "Uh, nothing. It's nothing."

Before they could reply a large building appeared out of nowhere, forcing Shadow to stop and Manic to slam on the brakes. "Whoa."

The building was completely black. In fact, it looked as if it was made out of black smoke. It had a huge door decorated with strange symbols. "Um. I think we found it."

"Yeah…" Sonia slowly stood up and walked out the van with the boys right behind her.

Tails walked up to the towering doors and started pushing on them. Seeing the little progress he was making, the other three helped him push. A creaking sound started as the door gradually gave way until it finally opened.

They all gasped at the interior of the base. It was the exact opposite of the outside. Everything was white. The floors, the ceiling, and even the furniture was all white.

'Just like that white limbo all those zones the Time Eater got to,' Tails thought as he cautiously entered the building.

Looking around the room, there was little decoration. There were mostly computers and other technical stuff. But maybe Tails could use it.

He came up to the computer and started typing. Breaking through fire walls, hacking into files, the usual stuff. There was a ton of information about the place on it.

Shadow and Manic walked up behind him to get a good look at the screen, Shadow's ruby eyes sharp and intense. "You're pretty good at this."

"Thanks," Tails said, still looking at the monitor. "I've had a lot of practice." Video footage files started scrolling down the screen, different rooms started popping on screen then flashing away as it was replaced by the next. Tails's hands flew to the keyboard on the fifth slide as he found what he was looking for.

On the screen, in a cell, pacing, was Sonic the Hedgehog.

Sonic was sure that, by now, he should have made a crater in the floor. He had been pacing in his cell for a few hours now, and all that he had left was a slightly charred circle. It just killed him having to stay in this thing for so long.

He stopped, however, when he heard the door open next to the cell. He groaned when he saw Randell walk in. "I'm getting real tired of you."

"It's good to see you too." Great. Here it comes. "Still not too friendly, I see."

"Why should I be?"

"I didn't mean any harm when I took you. I only needed the medallions. I have told you this." He had no expression in his voice.

"Yeah. Told me and told me and told me…" Sonic was getting very annoyed at this point. It seemed every time Randell came in, his patience would thin a little more. His emotion would pitch just a little higher. "Are you ever going to give up?"

"Actually, I was going to ask if you'd help me."

Sonic whirled toward him, anger flashing through his eyes. "What?! Are you insane?! Why on Mobius would I do that?!"

The shadowed man held his hands up in defense. "I just thought that you could help me."

"With what?" Sonic asked, acid dripping from his voice.

"Just a little problem I'm having."

The four rushed down the halls as fast as they could, Shadow way ahead of the others. They had found Sonic! Now all they needed to do was free him! They could worry about the medallion later.

A few of those aura bots came to try and stop them but they didn't last long. You don't get in between family.

Tails skidded to a stop in front of one of the doors. "This is it, guys!"

Shadow, Sonia, and Manic, who had been a few feet ahead, backtracked to the door Tails by indicating. "Sweet! Let's do it to it."

They quickly opened the door to find Sonic staring down Randell. The blue hedgehog took his attention away from his adversary though when he heard the door open. His smile spread almost completely across his face. Randell, however, did not seem so happy.

"Look like my problems have arrived." He took a threatening step toward them, darkness swirling around him and aura balls forming in his hands.

Sonic had had enough. "You leave them alone!"

His fur started to slowly change color, going from blue to black. His quills arched upwards, dark energy surrounding him. Then his eyes. His eyes had started flickering from the emerald green orbs they all knew into white, pupil-less sockets. He was turning dark.

Sonia and Manic stared in complete shock at their brother. How could such a happy person look so dark?

Shadow and Tails weren't as shocked as worried. Right when his eyes had become pure white, they knew they needed to stop it. "Sonic! Snap out of it!"

The hedgehog blinked a couple of times before grabbing his head, then slowly reverted back. Back to the blue quills and fur. Back to the emerald green eyes. Back to Sonic.

When he let go of his head, he noticed a spark at the bottom of his cell. Then another. Then the entire cell was sparking with electricity; it was shorting out! Randell left quickly as he saw that his plan was falling apart.

Then the walls shut down. He was free. He was no longer a prisoner. A bait.

And he was getting tackled by a certain black-and-red blur and two-tailed blur. The ebony hedgehog and fox were crying their eyes out into their little brother's/big brother's shoulder, squeezing him so hard he could hardly breathe. But he didn't mind. His brother instincts were kicking in as he held the dark hedgehog and fox to him.

"It's fine, guys. I'm all right."

Hearing his voice made them squeeze just a bit harder. "Don't do that again, you blue idiot."

"You promised."

"I know I did. And I haven't broken it yet, have I?" He gently pulled the black hedgehog and fox off his shoulder to look them straight in the eye. "No one's ever been able to keep us apart, and no one's going to."

Both Shadow and Tails went in for another hug, except a lot gentler this time. "Thanks, big bro."

Sonic rubbed his back. "No prob, li'l bro."

Shadow purred as he nuzzled Sonic's cheek. "Quit being stupid, Faker."

The fox and ebony hedgehog eventually separated themselves from Sonic only to let him get attacked by another blur. This one magenta.

"Sonic Hedgehog! Don't you ever worry us like that again!"

He smiled at his sister and older brother. "I can't make any promises." They both glared at him for a second. "But I'll try."

Their expressions changed back to smiles. Sonia kissed Sonic on the cheek. "Good."

Manic came up now. "Are you okay, bro?"

"I'm fine, Mani-" He realized what he meant. "You were talking about the black fur and stuff, weren't you?" He nodded. "Well..." How exactly was he supposed to explain this without scaring them? Who was he kidding? There was no way to put it without scaring them. "What you just saw… was Dark Super Sonic."

"Dark Super Sonic?"

"Yep. He's basically all of my negative emotions smashed into one form. One power. He's pretty much his own being. Except for the fact that he lives in my head. I keep him in there though. Most of the time. Sometimes if I get mad enough, he can take over. I don't really have any control over my body when he does and he only lets me see certain things so half the time I don't know what's happening. All I can do is fight him. Try to get him back in my head." He looked over to Tails and Shadow. "Not many things help me snap out of it, but Tails and Shadow here do. You just saw them in action too."

The fox blushed and smiled back at the hedgehog. Shadow simply returned Sonic's smile.

"You've definitely changed over those years, haven't you?" Sonia asked, her voice sounding slightly depressed.

"Yeah, I guess." Sonic put his arm around his sister. "Just not as much as you think."

Suddenly, a black wave hit them all, almost dragging them away. Sonia fell into her brother's arm while Manic gripped onto his shoulder. Tails grabbed onto Shadow, who grabbed part of the cell that was still intact while the wave pulled at him. The torrent was unforgiving. It seemed to be trying to rip out their very souls. All there was, was blackness. It lasted for several more minutes before they finally calmed down.

"Everyone okay?"

"Still in one piece."

"I'm all right."

"Present."

"I'm fin-"

Sonic looked to his sister. "Sonia? What's wrong?"

"My- my medallion. It's gone!"

Sure enough her piano shape necklace had disappeared. Sonic whirled over to his brothers. Theirs were gone as well!

"Uh oh."

Randell had all four medallions. He had the key to ultimate power.
