Alexandre came out of his bathroom with the intent of finding something to wear for his date with Alexis. The plan was for them to tour their green space and have something called a picnic. Alexis had said she would take care of everything about the picnic.

Rick and Lais were also taking a break. "Babe." There was something she really needed to tell him. Alexis was probably not going to tell him and while he might be mad, keeping it a secret would only be worse.

"Alexis came to me in search of birth control," Lais admitted since she didn't want secrets.
"She what?" he thundered. Rick's mind flew through all the reasons why she would want birth control but there was only just one reason and only one person that might get her pregnant.
"You did." Lais saw his face change to one of anger. "She came to me because she knew what you would say and probably wouldn't do it for her."
"You're damn right she knew what I would say to that!" Rick's anger was growing. "And naturally you did it for her." Now he was getting angry with her.
"Of course I did. Do you want her to be pregnant? They're young and in love. You haven't questioned if I have protection and we've been making love for weeks." She had a stem as well. Only hers was going to last longer.
"Yes, she's young, Lais! Sixteen years young. What the hell were you thinking?" he exploded. She was far too young for sex. She wasn't supposed to have sex until she was thirty or later.

"That's not the point." Though Rick's anger was fading as he listened to her and remembered his first time.

Rick groaned as he listened to her. "Your new home is isolated in those mountains and she's home schooled like Alexandre is. Who's she ever going to meet and fall in love with?" Lais asked him. "And if you say no one I'm going to hurt you. They both deserve a future."
He groaned even more. Everything she was saying was true but they were talking about his baby girl. He had really hoped that this day wasn't going to come for a little while from now. Not when she was sixteen years old.
Lais defended her son. "Alexandre also has a stem for birth control. It isn't all on her. He's a good kid. I've done all I can to make sure he knows how to treat a woman."
Rick latched onto that word even if it was weak. "Alexis is a girl, not a woman."
"Teenagers are not simple kids any longer. When did you lose your virginity?" Lais questioned him. Maybe she could use that as more ammunition. "Babe?" He was taking too long to answer her question.
"Seventeen," Rick finally admitted. "And no, I didn't use any form of birth control. It kind of just happened and I wasn't prepared. Obviously she didn't get pregnant." He only had the one child.
"So both of them are smarter than either of us were at that age." She hadn't used protection, either. While she hadn't gotten pregnant that time, she had not much later, which had given her her son.
"Yeah." He didn't know how, but somehow Alexis was far smarter and more trustworthy than he had ever been at that age.
"Good." Lais got up and sat on him. "Are you wearing a stem or is not getting pregnant all on me?" Did he see the point she was making?
"No." He was being stupid and hadn't done a thing. "I see your point. I'm sorry, Lais. Forgive me?" Rick wasn't all that upset or angry any longer. She had gotten to him.
"Yes, Rick, my good boy. …I mean, bad boy. Come on, babe, into your medical bay with you. I'm willing to take risks when we make love, but I could use some help." Lais pulled him up with her and still naked they both walked the short distance to his medical bay.

Lais watched Rick inject a stem into himself then stepped up to him and kissed him. "Another reason why I love you." Lais was all smiles.
Suddenly a security bot came into the medical bay, beeping madly. "What's wrong with that thing?" Lais asked since none of them had ever done anything like that before.
"It's an alert. Scans have detected another ship in FTL. It might be Xindi!" Rick hurriedly explained.
"Xindi." Lais wasn't sure she was ready. Especially not when she was naked and interested in making love again. "Better put your suit on, babe. And remember," Lais grabbed his face with both hands, "I love you very much." That said, she ran to her ship.

Lais was betting she knew where Alexis and her son were and didn't have time to be nice about it. She went into her son's room, still naked. "You two up and get moving. The Xindi are coming. Get suited up. …Kiss her, tell her you love her, and let's move." Lais left them and ran into her room to put on her own suit.
"Xindi!?" Alexis had heard her and had been shocked at first since Alexandre had his head planted firmly between her legs at that moment.
Alexandre raised his head and looked at her. "Xindi? NOW!? " They were finally making love to each other and he was thinking of even being inside her again and not waiting for tomorrow.
"Xindi." Alexis tried to get her brain working since she had been hoping for another orgasm and now she wasn't. "What did your mother say?" Alexis looked and she was gone.
"She said I should…that I should kiss you and tell you that I love you and get moving." Alexandre was also trying to wrap his mind around what had just happened. He liked oral sex. Suddenly he saw Alexis get up and was on all fours and bent down to kiss him. "I love you," she said as she jumped off the bed and ran flat out for her ship and her room so she could put on her suit and join her dad on the bridge.
"I LOVE YOU, TOO!" Alexandre yelled after her. "My suit." He needed to find his suit, get dressed, and onto the bridge to help his mother.

Alexis had made it just as far as the stairs when suddenly she was in Lais's arms. "Do you love my son?" Lais needed to hear it. They were going into combat.
"I… I… Yes." Well, she was learning to love him so maybe that counted.
"Good because I think my son loves you, too," Lais told her. "I also told your dad that you came to me for birth control." She needed to clear everything with both of them.
"You what?" She had trusted Lais to keep her mouth shut. Now she learned she had told him.
"And I set him straight about you two. So give him a chance. He's mostly okay with you being lovers. Good luck today." Lais hugged her tightly then kissed her on both cheeks. "Maybe you can talk your dad into asking me to marry him." Lais smiled at her and let go of her. "I've learned to love you, too." Lais ran to her bridge so she could find out what the hell was going on.
"You… Dad." Alexis shook her head and took off running to her room to put on her suit.

"What have we got?" Alexis slid into her seat and didn't miss that her dad had beat her here.
"One ship in FTL. It's now just two minutes out. What I don't know is where it's going to come out of FTL," Rick said as Alexis looked at her own screens to try and find it.
Rick opened up communications. "You reading this, Lais?"
"I got it. Recommend shields and invisibility. If it's Xindi we should each take a side. I'm moving now," Lais advised him. Rick didn't see her moving since she had already activated her invisibility. "You take port and stay high above it so we don't shoot each other if we miss."
"Acknowledged. Lais…, I really do love you." She needed to know that no matter what happened. Rick wasn't afraid that everyone knew it.
"I love you too, babe. Fifteen seconds." Lais killed the transmission and turned it off so the enemy couldn't use it against them.
Rick moved as quickly as he could to get into position. "Here it comes, Dad." It was practically on top of them. Then they all watched as it dropped out of FTL. "My God. It's huge!"
"Sorry I'm late." Alexandre showed up, took his station, and looked at his scans. "Jeez, Mom, look at the size of that thing! I'm reading it's three miles long, two miles across, and half a mile deep. We're supposed to stop it?" Their little ship, as big as it was, didn't look like they were any match for it.
"Good thing we have friends then. See if you can make out if it really is a Xindi ship. I don't want to start blowing holes in a friendly ship," Lais asked him.
"Scanning now," Alexandre replied. "Holy shit! There are 656,000 of them. Over two thousand fighters. Cargo capacity in a total of tons I can't even begin to read. Over forty weapons on each side. No shields of any kind but their armor is thick. All non-human or any other race we have in the computer. Have to be Xindi." This thing was a damn beast.
"We need a plan. We need a good plan. A damn good plan." Nothing was happening so she didn't think they saw her or Rick and Alexis.
Lais came up with a plan on the fly. "Break radio silence and send them the scans of the weapons bays and fighter bays. If we can stop them from launching fighters and eliminate their weapons maybe we can take them."
"Then I'm dropping our invisibility and I want you to route main power to our shields." Once they broadcast and gave up their location their invisibility wasn't going to help them much.
"This better work. Broadcasting…now." He pressed the button. Alexandre added a message. "Mom wants to target their fighter bays and weapons mounts. Routing main power to the shields."
Lais didn't wait for them to respond; she began firing.
"They dropped their invisibility, Dad. Their shields are at maximum and they're firing," Alexis reported.
"Let's see what we can do against something other than asteroids." Rick locked weapons, opened up, and fired at the targets indicated.
"Fighters, lots of them." They reacted really fast, far faster than they thought they could. "They're firing weapons." Alexis watched as a number of their shots that had more in common with their missiles than beam weapons hit their shields.
Alexis was also watching Lais and Alexandre's ship. It was different from theirs. It was actually spinning as it moved. Unlike them they had missiles in pods spread out around the ship. To fire them and allow the automation to make more as it reloaded from storage, they had to spin to line up the next pod. However, their lone beam weapon could fire from any location of the ship.
"They're taking a lot of hits," Alexis warned Rick. She was curious as to why they were doing so well. They were both hitting the Xindi ship constantly. So why were they still putting up this much resistance?
"Dad, the Xindi ship's repairing itself." Alexis brought up a space on one of her screens that he could see that would show it. "It's actually fixing itself."
Rick took a peek but left it to Alexis to follow. He was busy targeting what he should on the ship and kept firing.
"Lais's shields are down almost 50%. Our reserves are down to 77%," Alexis reported.
"I'm dropping our invisibility. Maybe it will take some of the hits off of their shields." If they could actually see them he was hoping that would help them firm up their shields. Plus invisibility was using up power that could be used for their shields instead.
Part of it actually started working as they were getting hit a lot. "Twelve fighters just crashed into our shield. Reserve power is down to 68% and still falling," Alexis advised him.
The Xindi ship was more dangerous than the fighters unless all of them decided to crash into their shield. That might actually bring it down if they did.
"DAD!" Alexis was shocked just as their ship shook from a group of hits that took up some of their power. "There's another ship in FTL headed this way. Fifteen minutes."
"Tell Lais to activate their invisibility and intercept the new ship. We'll handle this one." Rick thought they were making progress since the firing had diminished greatly. Most of the hits they were now taking was from fighters.
"Lais has activated their invisibility. I don't know where they are. The fighters on her are now headed our way," Alexis cautioned.
One of the things Rick was learning was that their fighters while nimble, they weren't all that fast. He was actually dodging several of them. If he did some really wild maneuvers even the shots from the main ship missed him completely.
"See if you can scan and find out where their main engines are located. Maybe if we damage those the ship can't fire or even move. Make it easier to kill," Rick asked as he kept maneuvering and firing everything he had.
"Here comes the other ship," Alexis warned him and suddenly it dropped out of FTL. "Holy crap! It's even bigger than this ship. I'm reading six miles long and one mile in diameter. It looks like a massive cylinder. Lais is maintaining her invisibility but she's firing on the new ship so it must be Xindi." Alexis didn't like this new development.
"Power's down to 48%." They were going to need to find a way to recharge soon at this rate. "NO WAY!" Alexis did another scan just to be sure. "The new ship has split into three ships. Can ships do that?" Two ships was bad enough. Now there were four.

"Dad, those three have figured out where Lais is and have surrounded her." She still had her invisibility active. "She's dropped her invisibility and increased shield power. Ours is still repairing itself." She thought they were making progress but she didn't know just how much.
Then Alexis saw something else and activated her communications. "LAIS, MOVE! ONE OF THEM INTENDS TO–" Alexis didn't get to finish. She watched in horror as one of the Xindi ships rammed her ship. They blew up in an incredible explosion.
"OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! …ALEX!" He was dead. They were both dead. "No, please no," she wailed. Her heart was broken and her cries quickly turned into heartrending sobs. Her hand shaking, Alexis touched her screen. "NO!"
Rick couldn't see Lais's ship on his screen any longer, either. He wiped at the tears that were flowing down his face. Lais was dead. The woman he had learned to love more than his life was dead.
But his ship was still being attacked and he had three ships to contend with. Worse still was listening to his daughter falling apart over the death of Alexandre.
She had, however, found the main engine bay of the enemy ship.
