I POV
I let out a soft sigh as I parked my motorcycle outside the Cross Road Motel. Removing my helmet, I straightened up, allowing my hair to fall in waves down to my shoulders. I was fully dressed in a pair of simple jeans, a dark green T-shirt under a purple leather jacket, and brown boots.
'I'm worn out. I've gotta sleep.' I reflected as I looked towards the motel reception. 'I hope they've got a room left.'
With that, I got off my bike and began making my way towards the reception, reflecting on the strangeness of my situation. For some reason, I slept better in motels than I did at home. So it was that whenever my insomnia got too much to bear, I'd check into a motel for a few nights, just to get some much-needed sleep. As I entered the reception, I heard a news reporter talking from the TV on the wall.
"The atmosphere here is one of concern, as there is still no news of 10-year-old Shaun Monroe, who disappeared yesterday. A recent report indicates that the police are now treating this as another kidnapping by the Origami Killer. If this information is confirmed, he may still be alive, as the previous victims were all killed 3 to 5 days after their abduction. Obviously, time is running out fast for the investigators trying to find the child. I'm Michael Neddy for ICN."
I shook my head sadly, hearing that, and rang the bell on the front desk. The receptionist, a sleazy-looking man, soon emerged.
"Hello there, sweetheart." he greeted me in an oily voice. "What can I do for you?"
I cleared my throat and remained polite. "I'd like a room."
"For you, anything. Fill in the register." he remarked as he took out the register.
I quickly filled it in and then the man read what I'd written.
"Hannah Washington, 32, single. How long will you be staying with us, Miss Washington?"
"I...don't know yet."
The receptionist nodded. "Room 201. Last floor, stairs on the right in the courtyard."
As he said this, he handed me the room key. I thanked him as I walked away and heard his reply.
"The pleasure was all mine. "
"That's for sure..." I muttered, knowing full well that he was staring at my backside. I hated people who looked at me that way.
Shaking my head, I pushed my thoughts aside and made my way across the courtyard and up the stairs. I began walking along the balcony towards my room.
But then, looking past it, at room 207, I noticed someone, a tall man, leaning against the balcony. He looked hurt and I was instantly worried. So worried, I made my way over to him, all thoughts of sleep pushed from my mind.
"Sir? Are you alright?" I asked, but it was clear that he wasn't alright, as he turned, groaning. "I'll call an ambulance."
But he shook his head. "No. No ambulance..."
"You're badly hurt, you need a doctor." I pushed. Why would he be refusing? I didn't make sense to me.
But he insisted, "Please, just...help me to my room. It's number 207."
I bit my lip, but nodded, and let him lean against me for support as I worked on getting him into his room. Once inside, I helped him to the bed and sat him down, gently removing his jacket.
I shook my head. "You're really in bad shape, you should see a doctor."
"Must have one, maybe two broken ribs... It's not fatal, but it's sore as hell." he muttered in reply.
Noting another wound, I commented, "Your head is bleeding, too. It looks deep..."
But it was clear that he wasn't going to accept any hospital trip. So instead, I hurried into the bathroom and looked around until I found the disinfectant and cotton wipes in the medicine cabinet. I hurried back to him and began setting it up.
"I'm gonna disinfect your wound." I told him. "This might hurt a little."
With that, I got to work, slowly and carefully, until I was done.
"There, at least it won't get infected. "I remarked.
"Thanks."
I hurried back into the bathroom and checked for any medicine, finally finding what I needed: painkillers.
'Paracomol painkiller, administer in cases of intense pain, do not take more than one pill every 24 hours.'
I hurried back to the man and handed him one of the pills. "Here, take this. It should do you some good."
"What is it?" he asked.
"It's a painkiller. It'll help reduce the pain." I explained.
To my surprise, he took the bottle from me and took a few more pills.
"It says on the box to take one every 24 hours." I warned him. "I don't think it's a good idea to exceed the dose..."
"I can't afford to wait." he replied.
I bit my lip, now even more worried about him. What was going through his mind to be acting like this?
Hesitantly, I suggested, "I wouldn't move around for a few days if I were you."
He shook his head. "I'm gonna take a shower."
"Alright, let me help you." I relented.
With that, I helped him over to the bathroom and as he went inside and shut the door, I made my way over to the a chair by the window and sat down.
"I'll wait here until you come out. Let me know if you need anything." I called out to him. "Talk to me, that way I'll know if you pass out."
"What's your name?" was the first thing he asked.
"Hannah."
"Are you staying in the hotel?"
I quickly explained, "No, I live in town. I suffer from chronic insomnia. I seem to only be able to sleep in motels, don't ask me why. Whenever I get too exhausted, I come and spend a night here."
There was a pause, during which, I realized what I just said.
'What? Why would I tell him that? Okay, it's nothing major, but...I make it a point to never tell anybody about my insomnia, the reason for it is too personal to me. So why did I just mention it to him without a second thought?'
I broke out of my thoughts as I heard him talking again. "I'm...I'm just passing through. And what else do you do, Hannah, apart from fixing up strangers?"
"I'm a photographer. I take pictures of furniture for fashionable design magazines." I told him, not strictly untrue, but not the truth ether. "And you?"
"I'm an architect." he replied, at which point, the water turned off.
After a few moments, the door opened and he emerged, fully dressed. He gave me a light smile.
"Thanks for staying. I feel a lot better now." he told me.
"Okay. I'd better get going, then..." I said, feeling suddenly awkward. "By the way, you never told me your name."
"Mike."
"Be careful, Mike." I told him.
He just nodded and I then left the room, wondering still about what compelled me to open up like that to him, a total stranger.
MIKE POV
Gathering myself, I moved over to the table again, groaning as I sat down. I was still somewhat in pain, but not as much. Hannah had done a good job fixing me up as best as possible. But I couldn't delay, I needed another origami figure.
I opened the box and pulled out the butterfly, marked number two, and opened it. This one read, 'Are you prepared to suffer to save your son?' and gave another address.
With a heavy sigh, I picked up my jacket and left my room, heading for the trial.
End of chapter, hope you enjoyed it, read and review please.
