Chapter 24
The week had gone well so far. Evie and Mal were planning to watch the match with Lonnie and Ellie. It was still a mystery to Evie how Mal and Ellie had even made it to friendly terms, she knew Mal had a tendency to distrust everyone from first meeting.
On Monday, during double art, the professional cameras had been handed out to the class. Mal had decided to use the local towns beauty as the centrepiece for her project. Unfortunately, her friends had become test dummies for the new photographer. It was now Wednesday and Mrs Fitz had kept her behind after the lesson, knowing she had a free period. The teacher had wanted to take a look at how she'd been doing so far, knowing how the cameras many settings could be baffling to those who had used a camera before let alone someone who could just about use their mobile phone.
She brought Mal across to the computer and showed her how to use the photography studio software suite and took a look through the girl's portraits of her friends.
Mrs Fitz picked out three that she deemed to have the best artistic quality and guided Mal on how to make them all like that.
The first was one of Evie, the girl clearly in deep concentration as she was using her sewing machine. "You've captured the natural light fantastically in this one, look how it frames Evie's face." she commented to Mal.
The second was taken off Harry and Gil who were in the swords and shields training room. Swords held up in battle, but a look of playfulness across their faces.
"What swords are they using Mal? They don't look like the usual team ones?" Mrs Fitz asked confused by the very intricate design on them. "They are their own personal pirate swords. Fairy Godmother decided they'd be allowed to train with them under her express supervision - she's just out of the shots frame." the younger girl responded. "It's the look on their faces I like, so much joy from what most would deem simple child's play. I was just glad the camera was able to capture their fun" she explained to the teacher who was fast becoming her favourite.
The third picture was of Jane, Lonnie and Evie sat around one of the many trees across the campus. The three appeared engrossed in the latest fashion magazine. Mrs Fitz highlighted how she liked that the three girls were in focus with the background not. Internally the teacher was marvelling at just how well Evie had fitted into the Auradon life, from the picture you'd never tell she'd lived anywhere else growing up.
"Take that camera with you to the match this afternoon - you have skill at capturing really good people moments" Mrs Fitz told her, effectively dismissing her at the same time.
As she walked in the direction of the library to meet the other girls before heading out for the match pep rally, she was thinking about the other pictures she saw that she'd taken since getting the camera. Her personal favourite had been another one she'd taken when the pirates were doing their sword practise. It was a portrait of Harry with the most charming look on his face despite his stance being a poised sword ready for attack in one hand and his hook in the other. There was also one of the four male VK's in their tourney kit laughing at something - they all looked care free.
After the girls had met up they headed out towards the bleachers to get good seats for the match, especially important now that Mal had been set her photography task.
"How come you've got your camera Mal?" Ellie asked spotting it round her new friends neck. "Mrs Fitz was looking through what I'd done so far to make sure I knew what I was doing and she spotted that I seem to have a nack for capturing people." she shrugged still not convinced her pictures were that fantastic. "I'll take pictures for the first half, then watch the second."
Mal spotted a few video cameras located around the pitch, she suspected this was their way of allowing Captain Hook and Gaston watch from the Isle as per his request. She would have to try and get the two fathers again later to chat to their sons via Hades new tablet and internet connection.
The cheer teams from both schools began to make their way out onto the field along with their marching bands. Doug gave Evie a small wave when he spotted where the girls were sat.
After about an eternity in Mal's opinion, or 20 minutes in the real world, the cheerleading show was over. She'd taken some pictures to pass the boredom of watching the dancing. Hopefully some of the ones of Jane would come out well - she'd been so happy to actually make the squad this year rather than just being the mascot. As they made their way off the field the two tourney teams began making their way out from the changing rooms.
After the coin toss to determine which team would be starting, Arendale's, the players got into position after the two captains shook hands, it came as a surprise that the opposing teams captain was actually Ellie's brother. She admitted to the other three girls that the reason she'd moved to Auradon Prep was to get out from under his shadow.
During the first half of the match both teams were pretty evenly matched. It was clear the opposition had been told to keep an eye on the VK's from their defensive set up. Little did they realise that over the course of the term Jay had been working hard to bring the rest of the team up to the same ruthless mindset on the field.
As Mal had promised the camera had gone away during the second half and once the mid-game entertainment had been completed Jane was free to come up and sit with the other girls.
Evie was full of praise for her, the other three just nodded in agreement. They struggled to see the point of it all but did at least acknowledge the hard work that went into it.
"Jane, come see me this evening - I tried to take some pictures of you earlier. Can't guarantee any will come out okay." Mal said to Jane with a slight shrug, indicating to the camera bag over her shoulder. "Thanks Mal, that's so sweet of you - mum might like one for her desk!" she beamed, hoping to make her mum proud.
Soon the second half began, it would be a fair assessment to say Auradon were in complete control - the non-isle players had unleaded their inner wild child. Quite a sight for the spectators, Mal, Evie and Lonnie were among the only few who knew it was coming, even Jane and Ellie had to be kept in the dark.
It gave the genuine four VK's cover to be more ruthless than normal on the field, everything within the rule book but some of the plays were close to not being.
Ellie was starting to get anxious, she could see that her brother was getting agitated by the storming defeat and that his anger was starting to build. If people though her mother's icy powers were uncontrollable they didn't have a shoe in on her brothers.
Both Queen Elsa and Ellie noticed the subtle temperature drop that occurred, thankfully the Queen was also fully aware about what was about to unfold and managed to get the match stopped long enough to get her son of the pitch - but not before snow had begun to softly fall around the boy.
"What an idiot my brother is" Ellie said while shaking her head, "mom's convinced that dad dropped him on his head as a baby" answering the unasked question about her hot-headed brother. "At least he's not lashed out at anyone here like he did when they played the team in Sherwood."
When play resumed, with only 5 minutes left on the clock, it was almost as though Arendale had given up having lost their captain.
"Any chance they were hoping to use that brother of yours as a secret weapon?" Mal asked the icy blonde haired girl beside her.
"Possibly, if he was able to get to the explosion stage they'd be playing on an ice rink" she shrugged, not really caring about her brother's problems. "Although given by how much we're winning they'd probably just declare us as having won anyway."
The final goal of the game was a pretty impressive play pulled off by Gil, Harry, Jay and Carlos with Gil being the one to actually put the ball through the goal.
The team and bleachers burst into celebration when the final whistle blew, signalling Auradon Prep's victory in the first match of the year - no doubt there would be some spectacular party being pulled off that evening.
Before Evie and Mal knew what was happening the four boys had descended on them to celebrate the victory. Jay pulled Lonnie in for a victory hug while Evie and Mal were busy giving hugs to the other three, although Harry may have been on the receiving end of a victory kiss or two.
By this point the team were starting to pull their game jerseys off, it wasn't long before Harry was giving his to Mal. Thankfully his body armour was underneath it so the whole school wouldn't see his collage of tattoos. Although given the teams habit of stupid dares around the post-match party most people would know by tomorrow.
Slightly ruining the moment of being given her first game jersey Evie spoke up "M, that thing is not entering our room until it's been through the laundry - twice!" she said eyeing the played in jersey covered in a mixture of mud, grass stains and sweat. Mal just rolled her eyes in response, not at all surprised at her blue haired friends response.
Shortly after the boys all headed off to grab a shower, Harry promising Mal that he would see her at the party later that night.
The group of girls, joined by Doug began to head for Mal and Evie's dorm room to look over the photos she'd taken to see how they'd come out. Ellie said she'd catch them up as she needed to have a chat with her mother and as family day wasn't for another two weeks she may as well take the presented opportunity.
As Mal was heading back she sent her dad a quick text to try and sort out a video call for the boys, certain their fathers would be proud of how the match unfolded. She was incredibly thankful that Carlos had somehow linked the messaging on her phone up to her tablet.
