Chapter 19

One Month Later

Misty and Ash had returned to Cerulean City as they prepare for the League's start next month. By now, the world knows about their engagement, which is met with lots of praise. Misty has enrolled Clementine into kindergarten for the upcoming fall. Lily found a place close by and is enjoying her life in her apartment. She occasionally visits, like today because Daisy and Tracey are in town. The Sketchit have been visiting for a few days now. The gang is enjoying a nice family grill session out back, and even Lily's recent boyfriend (tool as Tracey and Misty like to joke) Leo is there.

There is a knock on the gate as the group is having a good time and listening to music. Tracey is dancing with Clementine while Daisy surprisingly works the grill. They look over to see a tall man with dark brown hair and deep green eyes. He's dressed in some very expensive brand name clothing. Lily instantly glares at the man.

"You!" she exclaims while getting out of her seat. Leo watches on as Misty follows her sister. "Leave!"

"Please, Lily. I'm just here for my daughter." The man replies as Lily and Misty approach him. Misty eyes the two before giving Lily a questioning look.

"Is this him?" she asks the older girl. Still glaring, the pinkette nods and Misty glares at the man as well. At this point, Ash is next to them while Tracey sets Clem down with Leo and him. Daisy watches on in confusion but is focused on the grill thinking that this man must be one of Lily's exes or something.

"What's going on, guys?" the black haired man asks as he walks in between the two parties.

Noticing Ash, the man's face lights up into a huge smile and he quickly grabs Ash's hand to vigorously shake it. "Hello, Mr. Ketchum! I'm a huge fan! My name is Nathan!"

Ash nervously smiles back at the attention before MIsty, thankfully pulls him away from the strange man. "She's Clem's deadbeat dad." Misty tells Ash who too now glares at the man.

"You can leave, sir." the champion sternly tells Nathan.

"No! I can explain! I didn't know she was mine until the DNA test came back recently!" Nathan exclaims and flashes a paper at them. "I'm very rich, see, and I thought Violet was just trying to trap me for my money."

By now, Daisy has left Leo in charge of the grill as she stands around them. "C'mon guys. Like what's taking so long?"

"He's Clementine's father." Lily angrily responds.

Misty looks over the paperwork and it checks out. "When did you get a DNA test on her?"

At this, Nathan nervously looks away. "Uh. I had someone follow her and they used a cup she had thrown away at the local cafe. I hope you understand. I just had to know for sure, and now I do." The man gives them a pleading look.

Daisy grabs the paper from Misty and reads over it. Indeed, the date the results were mailed out was a few days ago. "Why are you coming back now?" she asks the suspicious man.

"After Violet died, Lily found me and told me the news as well as about Clementine. I'll admit, I knew about her from when Violet was pregnant, but like I said, I couldn't be sure." Nathan insists. "Once I heard Clementine is without a mother, my consciousness got the better of me and I managed to do a DNA test, and well, here I am."

"You've had 3 months since I told you. Why now?" Lily asks.

"Like I said, I was in disbelief. Everything was happening so fast, but I'm here now, and I want to be a part of my daughter's life." Nathan tells them sorrowfully.

"Fine." Daisy responds and hands back the papers. Lily and Misty give her a surprised look.

"Daisy, he, like, told me he didn't want her when I saw him! Remember?!" Lily exclaims.

"Yeah, Daisy! We can't just introduce him to Clem and then he ups and leaves." Misty agrees.

"I won't do that now that I know!" Nathan pleads. He then looks at Ash. "Please, Mr. Ketchum! You believe me right?"

The girls, especially Misty, look at Ash intently. He nervously scratches the back of his neck and looks away to see Clementine playing carefreely with Tracey and Pikachu. "What do you plan to do?" Ash finally asks Nathan. The three look at him in confusion. "I agree with Misty. I'm not about to let you waltz into her life now and tell her you're her father. You need to earn that and our trust first. But I also agree with Daisy that you deserve a chance, so you can do that as a family friend."

Nathan nods happily at Ash's suggestion. "I will, I promise! I'll be the best dad I can be!"

The Kanto champion sighs.

"Fine. Since I'm, like, outnumbered, I'll be keeping a close eye on you." Lily states and walks away.

"You can start being a father now." Daisy mutters and opens the gate. Nathan gleefully walks in and thanks her before nervously walking with Daisy to Clementine.

Ash looks at his fuming fiance. "She needs a chance to know her dad, especially now that he wants to be in the picture." the man tells her.

"I know, but I just don't like him. How can he just ignore her existence for 4 years and then decide to just hop in. The excuse of Violet's death is bullshit. If you're a parent, you're there no matter what. Even if you don't get along with the other parent."

Her fiance gives her a smile and wraps her into his arms. "Mew, I love you, Mist." She mumbles her love back to him and they join the group at the table after Daisy had introduced Nathan as a friend to Clementine.

The shy bluenette only greeted him but stuck close to her Uncle Tracey. During the rest of the grilling session, Nathan spends a lot of time talking to Ash, who kindly and respectfully holds the conversation. Ash is always too nice to turn others away, which is why he can be seen talking to the media for hours. Clementine spends her time with the rest of her family and the Pokemon. Like Nathan, Leo doesn't attempt to interact with the 4 year old.

"Clem! Clean up your toys, please." Misty asks the bluenette. Clementine is still playing with the Pokemon and chooses to ignore her aunt. "Clementine. Violet. Waterflower." Pikachu is scared now and he stops playing with the girl.

Clementine groans and responds, "But I'm playing!"

Misty, hormonally pregnant and tired from the day, gives her goddaughter a stern look, which causes Ash to leave Nathan midconversation and hurry over to the little girl. Nathan looks on confused as to why his idol suddenly got up.

"Hey Clem! Can you help me pick up all these toys?" Ash smiles as he squats beside the pouting 4 year old. Clementine shakes her head and Ash gives her a soft gaze. "Please, Clem? I'll let Squirtle sleep with you tonight."

Clementine sticks out her little pinky. "Promise?" she asks quietly. Ash gives her a bright smile and connects his pinky with hers.

"Promise." He says. Clementine then rushes to pick up her toys as Ash holds the toybox for her. Once all the toys are put away, Clementine happily resumes her play with the Pokemon. Ash makes his way back to his seat and Misty follows him. Nathan is still seated, but he was on his pokenav while he waited for Ash's return.

"Wow. You were right, babe. Ash is, like, all that they need." says an astounded Daisy. Tracey just smiles at his wife and puts an arm around her.

"Hey Ash!" Nathan greets once said man sits down. Ash shoots him a polite smile and is once again saved by Misty.

"Ashton Satoshi Ketchum!" Or maybe not. The Kanto champion flinches at her tone. She stands next to him and glares at him. "You need to stop spoiling Clementine. I want her to learn how to be a responsible person."

"She's 4, Mist. Sometimes, you just need to compromise with kids."

"Ash, I've raised her since she was born! I think I know how my niece behaves. I don't want her growing up thinking that it's okay to make a mess because someone will always help her clean up."

"I don't get it. Why wouldn't people help others clean up?" Asks the oblivious champion.

Misty angrily rolls her eyes. "It's a metaphor, dumbass." And she storms off to sit with her sisters and their men. Ash sighs and runs a hand through his hair.

"What's her problem?" Nathan asks him annoyedly.

Ash shoots him a glare. "That's my fiance you're talking about. Watch your tone." He snaps at Nathan before standing up and deciding to join Clementine and the Pokemon on the grass. Nathan awkwardly sits alone in the chair and stands up. He bids the group good night and leaves after exchanging numbers with Misty in order to find times to see Clementine.
