A/N Sorry again. I know how annoying this must be for these random updates but if I set a deadline, I would just let you down so I'm going to continue being terrible at remembering to update this.
Chapter twenty-two
Tris' POV
I smiled at Four as we prepared to sneak out to his jeep. We were going to my house to get the paint bombs and spray paint. I had always had some stocked up since Tobias and I went to that abandoned building together. I always went there when I need ed to be alone. I counted down to one and then we ducked and ran past the main office.
I laughed as we jumped in the jeep and took off down the road to my house. We quickly scaled my tree and grabbed all the stuff. I looked over at him and couldn't help but notice how stressed and tired he looked. He looked like that a lot these days. He was keeping something from, but I didn't want to pressure him. He never shared anything with anyone so the fact he told me anything is amazing.
I checked my watch and let out a curse. We had ten minutes to get back before class. We jumped out the window and sped back down the road to the school. We were lucky we brought our bags with us and made it to class as the teacher was walking down the hall. Christina grinned when she saw us.
"I can't wait to get them back," she whispered when I sat down next to her.
"Believe me, I can't either. They won't know what hit them."
We shut up then when Senora Gomez told us that we should stop talking during her lesson. I hate when teachers do this, why shouldn't they just stop teaching during our conversation. I decided I should be nice and attempt to focus on the lesson. I left before she could stop me to talk after class and rushed to maths class. I was one of the first ones there and handed over the bag to Will as soon as I sat down.
"So was the other mission successful?"
"Very. They got in and out without anyone seeing them and then set up a public Instagram and posted a picture saying, 'Look what we stole.' The factionless are furious, it's kind of hilarious."
"So, they're distracted from the main act?"
"One hundred percent. You good to work with Marlene and Shauna?"
"Obviously, they're amazing. I just feel bad for Uriah."
"I kind of do too but those two needed a push in the right direction. You've noticed them staring as well I presume."
"Could they be more obvious? Lauren is always stuttering around her and Lynn just blushes at the mention of Lauren."
"That's why I gave them the easy job."
"You're an evil genius."
"You hadn't figured that out already? Shocker."
We sat through the next hour of maths and high fived when the bell rang. I sped towards Zeke's car where the other three were waiting. Perks of having the same class together. His car was an old convertible, his dad's. It was blue and I loved it slightly more than Tobias' jeep, but I would never tell him that.
"We need to stop at the garage on the way," I said as I jumped over the door into the backseat.
"You got it boss," Zeke said before saluting me and driving out of the car park. We arrived at the garage in minutes and waited while Tobias asked Matthew for some oil. He came out triumphant with the clear oil so they wouldn't know it was there until it was too late. I was so happy I kissed hm on the cheek from the backseat.
He reached back then and held my hand while we drove to Factionless High. It was a pretty basic high school but was much smaller than Dauntless. We parked down the street a bit and tried to act like we were normal people just out for a drive.
"You know having Shauna here would make this pretending easier because we could pretend we were two couples out for a drive."
"Zeke we wouldn't be hanging out if we were two couples because we would hang out by ourselves. A group of friends is much more believable."
"But couples can stand each other. Friends can't."
"I hung out with Christina and Will for their first two dates because Will was so nervous he wanted me there. I could stand hanging out with them. You just want Shauna here."
"That's not true. I'm just thinking about what would be best for us."
"That's a lie and you know it!"
"God would you two ever shut up," Christina groaned. "Four we're swapping places so you can distract Tris from teasing poor little Ezekiel."
Tobias just grinned and swapped with her. As soon as he sat in, I snuggled up against him. I turned to smile at him and brought my face up to his to whisper in his ear.
"You're comfier than my bed you know. I could fall asleep right now."
"Well that wouldn't be very smart would it?" he whispered back, smiling that smile he saved just for me.
"Why not?"
"We have to prank Factionless."
"Eh, that can wait. I like it here."
At that I set my head on his chest and listened to his heartbeat as we waited for Uriah. Christina and Zeke were joking and messing while Tobias wound his fingers through me hair and rubbed circles on the back of my hand. I was just starting to worry about Uri when I heard a yell and saw Lauren's car speed past. That was the code we came up with for him to warn us the Factionless were coming.
We all put on expressions of shock and surprise as the Factionless drove past. When they were gone, we got out and ran up to the school. We saw the others running into the locker rooms to set the trap as we made our way to the field. I quickly took note of the different ways we could leave undetected and decided on the best one.
"Let's wreck this place," Zee said excitedly as we ran over to the home teams' entrance to the field. We quickly poured the oil all around the entrance so there was no way they wouldn't slip and poured it further so that everyone in the crowd would see them slide onto the field.
The glue was the hard part. We had to wait until the last minute because even though it was slow drying it wouldn't last that long so we would have to hurry as soon as people started arriving. We sat around for the next ten minutes, just messing and mocking people we didn't like. Christina did an impeccable impression of the queen bitch herself, Nita. She was twirling her hair a, batting her eyelashes and leaning over to Tobias as she fake flirted with him. We all laughed really loudly until we remembered this was meant to be a stealth mission.
We talked about the game and Homecoming next week. We were all hoping Uriah would work up the courage to ask Marlene to go with him but knowing him he would chicken out. If he did, I would personally ensure that they went together. I'm not much of a match maker but I have Christina on my side. If it was the last thing I ever did I would get them together.
"So then we were just sitting there and trying not to laugh as we waited for her to-" Zeke was saying but was caught off by the sounds of cars coming closer. We grabbed the glue and started pouring. There were at least twenty or more cars in the car park at that point. We slipped out the back of the stadium into the trees.
I quickly texted Shauna and told her where we were. She said they would be waiting in a clearing by the back of the school, near the room with lots of windows. We hurried along but slowed down when we heard branches snapping. I put a finger to my lips and pointed up to show that I was going to climb the tree to see what was going on.
I scrambled up and jumped from tree to tree. Within a couple minutes I was at the clearing and looked around. Shauna was sitting on a rock on her phone, Marlene was doing cartwheels and Will was walking around. I looked into the trees and caught sight of the purple colour of Factionless. I swept my gaze around the clearing and counted three more.
I reached for my phone and texted the others the situation and told them to sneak up on the factionless. They all texted me when they were in position and I sent them the go ahead before jumping from my branch onto the guy's head. He was out cold before he hit the ground. I reached into his pocket and used his fingerprint to unlock the phone. I deleted the pictures of the others in the clearing and put it back in his pocket. Then I ran into the clearing and told the others to run. We had to hurry if we wanted to make the game.
I looked behind me and saw the other three following us as we made our way to the cars. Zeke jumped in the front seat and drove into the car park. Tobias gave me a quick kiss on the cheek before he and Zeke headed to the locker room.
I slipped on Tobias' jersey over my t-shirt. I had taken it off so they wouldn't target Tobias in the game if we got caught. I grabbed Christina's hand and dragged her over to the bleachers. We smiled to ourselves as we saw the other side was full of people.
"They're in for a surprise," she whispered to me grinning. I grinned back and we sat down next to Lynn and Will. Christina wasn't cheerleading for this game because she hurt her wrist the other day. She was fine but it was just an extra precaution.
"So, you escaped?" I asked Lynn.
"It was almost too easy," she said grinning wickedly. "My cousins live in this area, so I navigated the way down some side streets, and we lost them. Uriah's yelling didn't help though. I swear half the state heard him."
I laughed at that and couldn't help but notice her blushing when the cheerleaders came out. I nudged her with my shoulder and said, "Anything else happen with a certain cheerleader?"
She gaped at me for a second before smiling. "Nothing gets past you Tris. I may have kissed her when we escaped, and Uriah may have complained about the groups being changed to avoid this sort of thing happening, but he said he was happy for us."
"Well so am I. But I do have one more question."
"Alright, shoot."
"Would you hate me if I said I paired you two up on purpose?"
She playfully punched me in the shoulder, grinning and shaking her head. "Of course you would do something like that. Nah, I couldn't hate you for setting us up."
"Yay!"
"Doesn't mean I'm not going to get you back though."
"Oh no!"
"Mhm, you won't know what hit you."
"I'm trembling in fear."
"As you should be."
We started cheering then as the guys ran on the field. Then everyone waited for the factionless to come out, but they didn't. We waited five more minutes before they came out covered in pink paint and slid on the oil. We all burst out laughing as they tried to stand up but kept falling down and were covered in oil. They eventually stood up and ran out.
Their side was cheering at first but then they all started struggling to stand up. Soon everyone was struggling and then we heard the sound of clothes ripping and our side all burst out laughing. I high fived the others and laughed as everyone started roaring on the other side. Sure, it was a little mean, but they attacked us first. They knew what they were getting into.
Ten minutes later the other team was cleaned up and ready to go so the game started. By half time we were destroying them, and they were furious. They were so furious that they threw wonky passes and fumbled the ball. One fumbled pass lead to Tobias getting the ball and running straight to the end zone bring the score up to 38. Then they scored a conversion. There was still ten minutes left in the game, but they stopped them from scoring anything.
The final score was 40-6. We all cheered when the buzzer went off signalling the end of the game. I ran straight onto the field and jumped into Tobias' arms. I grabbed his face and kissed him, not caring he was sweaty and disgusting.
"You were amazing!" I squealed, which was very unlike me.
"Well it helped having my amazing girlfriend set up the best prank of the century to spur us on."
"I guess you could say I was the MVP tonight," I said flipping my hair dramatically as we both burst out laughing. He kissed me again before we headed over to the others. I pulled Zeke and Uriah in for a hug and attempted to ruffle their hair, but as usual, I was too short. Uriah laughed and ruffled my hair instead before going over to talk to Marlene.
I grinned as I watched him rub the back of his neck nervously. Zeke and I held hands and crossed our fingers as they talked, waiting with bated breath. Suddenly he leaned in and kissed her. We all let out a cheer and the guys ran over to lift Uriah up and run around the field like idiots. The rest of us all ran over to hug Marlene and ask her what he said.
"Well we were just talking about the game and I said he played really well and then he asked me if I wanted to go to Homecoming with him. So obviously I said yes but then I said, 'Just as friends, right?' And he said 'Nah' and kissed me."
"That's such a Uriah thing to do," I said laughing. "But I'm so glad he finally made a move. I was planning on locking you two in a cupboard until you admitted your feelings."
"Really?"
"Yes really. I'd need help obviously, but I would do it. You were taking way too long."
"Says you. It took you two like three years to get together. By the way, how are you two doing?"
"You and Four are together?" Shauna asked in confusion. "Since when? And why is no-one else surprised?"
"We've known for like two months Shauna," Lauren said grinning.
"We got together after that party at Zeke's where we played truth or dare."
"You're going to have to be a little more specific."
"After paintball."
Shauna went silent for a second as she thought back and then her eyes widened when she realised what day it was. "That was the day Zeke and I got together," she said in surprise.
"Hence why we didn't tell you."
"Okay but why was it a secret for so long?"
"We didn't think it was a big deal to tell everyone. Lauren and Zeke figured it out nearly straight away and then we told everyone at that party no-one can remember but Christina remembered and then a tonne of stuff happened and telling everyone didn't seem like a big deal. Lynn and Mar figured it out then, but the guys have no clue. It's actually kind of funny."
"So, I was the only one not in on this?"
"I figured you knew."
"She can be a bit dense," Lynn said grinning. She'd been doing that a bit more since she told Lauren how she felt. I saw them holding hands and smiled to myself.
"Hey!" she yelled and playfully hit her sister. Lynn dodged her and the two set off running towards the boys.
Shauna jumped on Zeke's back and shrieked for him to protect her. He took one look at Lynn and sprinted in the other direction.
"Party at my house!" he yelled over his shoulder as he took off towards his car.
"Wait!" I yelled. "You're my ride!"
Everyone else laughed as I took off after him and grabbed Tobias on my way. He sped up and threw me over his shoulder. I shrieked in surprise but didn't even bother fighting him, knowing I would never win.
We reached the car park just in time to stop them and hop in. I settled in the back seat before glaring at Zeke from the back seat.
"I can't believe you were going to leave us behind!"
"Oops," he replied grinning.
I reached forward and smacked his arm playfully. We sat in silence then when we noticed Shauna still looked a little shocked after the revelation that we were together.
"Shauna, are you ok?" Zeke asked looking concerned. Suddenly she turned to him and hit him on the arm. "Ow, why does everyone keep doing that?"
"You knew about them and didn't tell me!"
"Oops?" he replied cautiously.
She started hitting him again but stopped when he yelled that he was going to crash. "Ow," he complained when she stopped. It wasn't my secret to tell and I promised Four that I wouldn't tell. Will you forgive me and stop hitting me please?"
She crossed her arms and grumbled a bit before grudgingly agreeing. He grabbed her hand and kissed it causing her to smile. I turned to smile at Tobias and saw him already turned towards me. I slid over to him and snuggled against him as we chatted. Zeke dropped us off at Christina's because she would kill us if we didn't put a little effort into to how we looked.
This would be the second party I went to since the time with Peter. I'd been pretty nervous about it, but the others never left me alone and were always checking on me. It was really sweet of them, but Peter hadn't shown his face at school in weeks. People figured that he transferred because everyone yelled at him when they saw him and half the school had blocked him.
Shauna and I made our way upstairs to where the others were waiting. Lauren probably drove because she was super reckless and fast. That was why she drove the distraction car. They were all putting on make-up and getting dressed when Christina dragged me over to a seat and started fussing over my make-up.
Shauna was laughing as she was dragged in the other direction. Christina was done with me twenty minutes later and handed me a beautiful black dress with spaghetti straps and came past my mid-thigh. We picked it out when we went shopping last week. Well, Christina had picked it out saying how gorgeous I would look in it.
I was ready to go and ten minutes later so was everyone else. We hopped in Chris and Lauren's cars and headed to Zeke's. The party was in full swing by the time we got there so we had to wade through a crowd to find the guys. We found them playing beer pong on the back porch. It was Zeke and Tobias against Uriah and Will. Just as Uriah was about to take his shot, I jumped on his back making him mess up.
"Hey! Trissy you ruined my shot!" he yelled at me as I ran over to Tobias and Zeke. Zeke high fived me and Tobias kissed me. I wrapped my arms around his waist and watched as they demolished Will and Uriah.
We both headed inside and danced for ages. But then our favourite song came on and we looked at each other before bursting into song, horribly off key. My mom used to play 'Don't stop believing' when Tobias came over when we were kids and we would dance around my living room singing it. It was our favourite thing to do but we stopped for a while after my mom died. But two years ago, it came on the radio in the car and we just had to belt it out.
When we had screamed ourselves hoarse, we went to get some drinks and find the others. We couldn't find them anywhere, so we sat outside on the grass by the pool. I had my head in his lap while he played with my hair and we talked for ages.
"No, Zeke would beat you in a gameshow because he'd cheat!"
"But I'd catch him cheating and win by default!"
"No, you wouldn't you're oblivious."
"Fine, you would catch him and then I'd win by default."
"That's more like it!"
"Besides, he's too dumb, everyone would have figured it out."
"How'd we even start talking about this?"
"How do most of our conversations end up?"
"With you insulting me."
"Exactly. This is just a more creative way of doing it."
"I'm a lucky guy."
"Yes, you are, and don't you forget it!"
"I wouldn't dare," he replied as he leaned down to kiss me. I wrapped my arms around his neck ad shifted so I was sitting in his lap. He deepened the kiss and pulled me closer as I slipped my hands up under his shirt and felt the defined muscles of his chest. He let out a low moan and pulled me closer, tangling his hands in my hair. He moved his mouth then, slowly, down along my jaw to my neck and made me gasp when he lightly bit the sensitive spot on my collarbone. Then he kissed each of the birds there and brought his mouth back to mine. I was drowning, drowning in the feel of him, his lips, his hands… when we were interrupted.
"There you are Tris!" I heard Christina yell from across the yard and slowly pulled away from Tobias.
"I wish we were alone," he whispered to me as they approached.
"I almost always wish that," I replied as we stood up.
"So, I was hoping you would join me and Will in a game of beer pong," she said when she arrived, completely oblivious as to what we had been doing.
"I'm not really in the mood Chris-"
"Come on it'll be fun and I wont stop annoying you until you come."
"Ugh, fine. But you owe me Dauntless cake."
"Deal," she said linking her arm through mine and skipping away to where everything was set up.
Chris took the first shot and got it in, so I had to drink. I mock glared at her before throwing mine and getting it in as well. Tobias and Will were grinning at each other as they both took turns. We beat them in the end, but Christina and I were drunk. Like very drunk. I might add that I act a little crazy when I'm drunk and Tobias knows it, which is why he tried to get me to leave soon after.
"Come on Tris, let's go," he said, tugging on my arm.
I just shook me head and pulled him towards me. "Dance with me," I said laughing as he stood there with his arms limp. I grabbed them and waved them around until he grabbed my waist and swayed to the beat.
"You're impossible, you know that?" he said, unable to keep the smile from flashing across his face. I loved that smile; I wish he would show it more.
I only realised I had said that out loud when he whispered, "I only show it for you."
"Well you should do it more, it's good for you. Now come on, let's play truth or dare."
I ran over to where a circle of the others were sitting while Zeke cleared everyone else out. I took a seat next to Lauren who was cuddling with Lynn and pulled down Tobias next to me. He immediately pulled me in his lap and laid his head on my shoulder, kissing it gently. I gave a soft sigh as Zeke sat down and started the game.
"Hm… let's see. Who do I never ask? Ah, Will, you shall be my first choice today. Truth or dare?"
"Truth."
"Pansycake!" Uriah yelled.
"See this is why I don't pick you. Let me see… I want something juicy if you're doing a truth. I will have to talk about this with my most trusted advisor. Tris?"
"Yeah," I called, not moving.
"I will have to ask my second most trusted advisor seeing as the first one is being a lazy ass. Uriah?"
"Ask if he's a virgin."
"Dude! But seriously, we all know the answer to that."
"True. Ooh, ooh ask him the weirdest place he's done it."
"You heard the man Will."
Will started blushing then as Christina started to laugh. We all waited patiently while Will worked up the courage to tell us.
"Um… I don't know which of them is the weirdest. There's three that seem equally as weird."
"All right then, let's hear them."
"Um… on the Ferris wheel down at Navy Pier-"
"As in, in the carriage thingy," I butted in.
Will nodded his head and continued. "On Ms Matthew's desk and in a holding cell at the police station."
We all gaped at him in shock as Christina grinned beside him. I gave Christina a high five as Will moved onto his next victim.
Lauren had to flirt with a person of her choice as dirtily as possible, so she chose Lynn and by the end Lynn was as red as a tomato. Then Lauren dared Uriah to do Mar's make-up. It turned out horribly, but he tried so hard. It was hilarious watching him figure out what went where. Then Tobias had to make an 'Anything but the Kitchen Sink' sandwich. Then he dared Chris to eat it. Then Lynn had to spam Harry Styles until he answered. Two hours later she had sent nearly a thousand pick up lines, random facts, hellos, Gifs, quotes from her favourite shows and made up theories about everything from the government to peanut butter.
"So Four, truth or dare?"
"Truth."
Everyone froze and gaped at him. He never picked truth, ever. Lynn luckily was the first to recover and grinned mischievously, knowing this was her one chance to ask Tobias a question and have him answer.
"So many options, what will I do?" she asked as she thought of something to ask him. "What's your real name?"
Everyone was watching now, wondering if he would actually tell them. He reached forward then and downed a shot. The disappointment was written over everyone's face except Lynn. She was grinning from ear to ear.
"We never established the rules at the start of the game. That means that you have to do the dare or tell the truth. Come on Four, it can't be that bad."
He looked around at everyone before grabbing my hand and bolting out the door. Everyone chased after us but most of them were too drunk to get very far. As it was Tobias was dragging me along seeing as I everything I saw was spinning.
"You can't hide from me forever Eaton!" Lynn yelled as we ran back to my house. We climbed up the tree and snuck through my window into the bedroom.
"I'm kind of tired Tobias," I whispered as I lay down on the bed.
"Come on Tris, we've got to change your clothes and take off your make-up."
"But I'm tired!"
"It'll only take a minute," he said as he lifted me up gently and led me to the bathroom. I grabbed the make-up remover and took off the make-up as best I could and changed into one of Tobias' t-shirts. I climbed under the covers and pulled Tobias in with me.
"Why didn't you tell them your name?" I whispered with my eyes shut.
"Because I like it being our little secret."
"Ok," I said, with a heavy feeling in my stomach. Something didn't feel right. "You'll stay?"
"Always," he said kissing my forehead. But even as I drifted off, I knew it was a lie.
