Volume 2: Chapter 6 Burning the Candle
The next day
Ruby and Weiss are in the dance hall for the school dance of the following day preparing the hall, or more accurately Weiss was decorating while Ruby was staring of into the distance.
Weiss then approaches Ruby, slams two pieces of cloth on the table and says "I ned you to pick a tablecloth."
Ruby looks at Weiss in confusion, then at the pieces of cloth in front of her and replies "Aren't they both the same?"
Weiss rolls her eyes, lets out a sigh and replies "I don't even know why I asked!" as she walks away from Ruby.
Yang then walks into the room, followed by Rock, who had the super arm activated, and auto. Each of them carrying a massive sound speaker, they each place the sound speaker in a corner of the room.
Yang then approaches Ruby and asks "So have you picked out a dress yet?"
"Do I have to wear a dress? I don't like being girly!" Exclaimed Ruby.
"So you can look pretty for your date with Rock." said Yang.
"It's not a date, it's only a school dance." said Ruby.
Rock then approached the two and said "Don't worry Ruby, you look good in anything. Even if it is a simple dress."
Ruby blushed and replied "Thanks... you also... ahem... look good in anything you wear."
"Rock, you haven't been spying on Ruby while she changes clothes have you?" asked Yang, as her eyes turned from purple to red.
Rock gets flustered and replied frantically "What... No... I would never... I would never-"
"Just kidding." Sang Yang as her eyes turned back to purple.
"Yang quit it, he's already going to be interrogated by dad and uncle Qrow when they hear about this." said Ruby in annoyed tone.
"Thanks Ruby." said Rock as he left the room to grab more stuff for the dance.
"You're welcome." said Ruby, as she turned to Yang and asked. "Have you found a way to get Blake to come to the dance yet?"
"Don't you worry your little head my dear sister, she will be going." said Yang, she then looked over to Weiss and saw her place doilies on the tables. Causing Yang to exclaim "Weiss! I thought we agreed, No doilies!"
"If I don't get doilies, you don't get a fog machine." said Weiss with a strict tone in her voice.
The door to the room opened, with Neptune and Sun walking into the room. Neptune having overheard the conversation asked "Your dance is gonna have fog machines?"
"We were think about it." said Weiss in a sweet tone.
"That's pretty cool." said Neptune, causing Weiss to blush.
"You ladies all excited for dress-up?" asked Sun, looking around the room for the preparations.
"Yeah right, there is no way in heck that I'm going to be wearing a dress." said Ruby.
"Come on sis, if we can get Blake to come to the party we'll be the best looking team at the dance. Now if we could get Rock to wear a dress, it would be even better." said Yang.
"Over my dead body!" Exclaimed Rock as he carried the DJ equipment into the room.
"Come on Rock, it will be fun. Besides it's not you have anything to hide under there." Said Yang as she pointed to Rock's armor.
Both Rock and Ruby turned beet red at the comment, and both exclaimed "Yang, enough!" Causing Yang to laugh at the scene in front of her.
Weiss, ignoring what was happening, turned to Sun and Neptune and asked "What are you two wearing?"
"Uhhhhh, this?" Said Sun as he pointed towards his shirtless outfit.
Neptune slaps his teammate on the head and replies "Ignore him, for he knows not what he says."
"Hey, I may have moved to Mistral, but I grew up in Vacuo. It's not exactly a shirt and tie kind of place." said Sun.
"Yeah, we noticed." said Yang in a deadpanned tone.
Sun blushed in embarrassment and then asked "Soooo, what dos Blake think of all this? She still being all, y'know... Blake-y?"
"Obviously." said Weiss.
"I still can't think of a way to change her mind." said Ruby.
"Guys, trust me. Blake will be at the dance." said Yang.
"Or, and hear me out, we trust Blake enough to let her make own decisions." said Rock.
"Rock... We let you do that, and look what happened. You collapsed from exhaustion, if we let Blake continue down this path the same thing will happen to her." said Yang. "Besides, I don't want another lecture from Weiss."
"I heard that!" Yelled Weiss.
"I know!" Yang sang in an upbeat tone, as she left the room to search for Blake. Bumping into Ozpin on her way out.
"Professor Ozpin, what are you doing here?" asked Weiss.
"I'm here to see how things are going with the preparations." said professor Ozpin.
"Well, as you can see. We are on track and might even be done earlier than expected." said Weiss.
"Good to hear Miss Schnee." said Professor Ozpin who then turned to Rock and added "Mr Light, I received a call from your father earlier today. He wants to talk to you tomorrow over a video call."
"I can do that." said Rock, with a hint of unease in his voice.
"Good, the call is at ten o'clock in the evening. Still enough time for you to make it to the dance and share a dance with Miss Rose." said professor Ozpin after which he left the room.
"Sure." said Rock with an uneasy tone in his voice.
"Rock, are you alright?" asked Ruby.
"Yeah, completely, one hundred percent." Lied Rock.
"Ok, I'm going to ask again. Are you alright?" asked Ruby.
"I'm not." said Rock.
"And why is that?" asked Ruby.
"I haven't talk to him in months, no calls, no letters, nothing. I scared he'll be mad at me." said Rock "I mean you guys saw my last conversation with my dad, right? It didn't end well."
"Relax, I haven't talked to my father in months either. And I'm completely fine." said Weiss.
"Weiss, your father is the biggest scumbag on Remnant. You not wanting to speak with him makes sense, I haven't spoken to him for months out of fear." said Rock.
"Well you shouldn't be afraid, he won't get mad at you." said Auto as he carried in a box of cables.
"What are you talking about?" asked Rock.
"Rock, he wasn't mad at you. He could never stay mad at you, or Roll, or even Proto. He worries about you three, he is probably concerned about your wellbeing." said Auto.
"Thanks Auto." said Rock.
"Your welcome, so don't worry and just talk to him tomorrow." said Auto.
"I will." said Rock, he then turned to Ruby and said "I'm sorry, but I'm afraid I'm going to have leave you alone at the dance for the first half hour."
"Don't worry, I completely understand. Family is important, whether it's blood related or found, family is always important." said Ruby.
The Beacon Library
Blake is sitting at one of the computers and is looking for information on Torchwick and the White Fang, when she notices a red dot appearing on the computer screen.
She tries to grab the dot, only for it to move. She tries again, only for the dot to move to the ground. Blake then logs off from the computer, then turns it off and follows the red dot.
She follows the red dot through the library, growing more annoyed with it each second. She then turns a corner and bumps into Yang, who enthusiastically exclaims "Hello!"
"What are you...?" Blake was about to ask, only to be interrupted by Yang grabbing onto her arm.
"We need to talk." said Yang as she then pulled Blake along with her.
After a while the two had made their way over to one of the classrooms, Yang then sat down on the desk while Blake stood around with a confused look on her face.
"Yang, if you're going to tell me to stop, you may as well save your breath." said Blake.
"I don't want you to stop, I want you to slow down." said Yang.
"I don't have the luxury to slow down." said Blake.
"It's not a luxury, it's a necessity." said Yang.
"The necessity is stopping Torchwick, stopping Wily, stopping the white Fang." said Blake.
"And we're going to. But first you have to sit down and listen to what I have to say." said Yang as she pats the table.
Blake hesitates, but eventually joins Yang on the desk. All she replied with was "Fine." with an annoyed tone.
"Ok, so as you know. Ruby and I grew up in Patch, and the messy stuff that you learned about during our visit to the minds scape but there is more to it than that." said Yang.
"Our parents were huntsmen. Our dad taught at Signal and our mom took missions around the kingdom. Her name was Summer Rose, and she was like... Super mom, baker of cookies and slayer of giant monsters. And then... one day, she left for a mission and never came back."
"It was tough, I mean you saw what the effect was on our father. But for Ruby it was even harder, how do you explain to a three year old that their mother coming back."
"A while later I learned that Summer wasn't the first love he had lost, she was the second. The first was my mother, dad wouldn't tell me anything. But I later learned that they had been on a team together with Summer and Qrow, and that she'd left me with him right after I was born. No one had seen her since." said Yang.
"Why did she leave you?" asked Blake.
"That question, why?" Said Yang as she turned to the chalkboard and began to draw on it. "I didn't know an answer, but I was determined to find out. It was all I thought about. I would ask anyone I could about what they knew about her."
"Then one day I found something. What I thought was a clue that could lead me to answers, or maybe even my mother."
"I waited for dad to leave the house, put Ruby in a wagon, and headed out. I must've walked for hours. I had cuts and bruises, I was totally exhausted, but I wasn't going to let anything stop me. When we finally got there I could barely stand, but I didn't care, I had made it. And then I saw them, those burning eyes."
"There we were, a toddler sleeping in the back of a wagon and a stupid girl too exhausted to even cry for help. We might as well have been served on a silver platter. But, as luck would have it, our uncle showed up just in time."
"My stubbornness should have gotten us killed that night." said Yang finishing the story and the drawing of Qrow's symbol on the chalk board.
"Yang, I'm sorry that happened to you, and I understand what you're trying to tell me, but this is different. I'm not a child, and this isn't just a search for answers! I can't just..." Blake said, only to be interrupted by Yang.
"I told you, I'm not telling you to stop! I haven't! To this day I still want to know what happened to my mother and why she left me, but I will never let that search control me. We're going to find the answers we're looking for, Blake. But if we destroy ourselves in the process, what good are we?" Asked Yang.
"You don't understand! I'm the only one who can do this!" Yelled Blake.
"No, you don't understand!" Yelled Yang as she faced Blake and had her eyes turn red in anger. "If Roman Torchwick walked through that door, what would you do? Or if Wily were to attack with an army of robots and Rock couldn't do anything what would you do!"
"I'd fight them!" Exclaimed Blake as she pulled out a piece of newspaper out of her pockets and added "Look at this, in the last few weeks alone Faunus throughout Vale have ended up dead. Something is happening, something only I can stop."
"No you can't!" Yelled Yang as she pushed Blake into the table, then grabbed the piece of newspaper, held it in front of Blake and exclaimed "You want to end up dead just like those Faunus!"
"No..." stammered Blake.
"Then please stop what you're doing, you can't stop whoever is doing this!" Yelled Yang.
"I can stop Torchwick, the White Fang and whoever is doing this!" Exclaimed Blake.
"You can't even stop me!" Exclaimed Yang as she pushed Blake again, she then pulled Blake into a hug.
"I'm not asking you to stop. Just please, get some rest. Not just for you, but for the people you acre about." said Yang as she let go of her partner and walked towards the door.
"Thanks Yang." Said Blake.
"Don't worry about it, now get over yourself and accept Sun's invitation to the dance." said Yang as she left the room.
Team JNPR's dorm
Jaune entered the dorm room of his team and saw Nora, Ren and Pyrrha standing in the room waiting for him.
"Hey guys, what's going on?" asked Jaune.
"Jaune, we need to talk." said Ren.
"About what?" asked Jaune.
"About... whats been happening to you." said Pyrrha.
"What are you talking about, everything is fine." said Jaune.
"Jaune, you're in denial." said Pyrrha.
"No I'm not, you can see it everything is fine. I have been improving in both my combat skills and in my academics." said Jaune.
"But you're destroying yourself in the process." said Nora.
"What?" Asked Jaune.
"Jaune, you've been working yourself to the bone. What happened yesterday was not the first time it had happened and if you keep going like that it will happen again." said Pyrrha.
"But i'm fine." said Jaune.
"Jaune, you're not fine!" Yelled Nora, causing her teammates to look at her in shock. "What?" she asked.
"Nora, you're usually much more aloof than this." said Jaune.
"Not when my teammate... and the closest thing I have to a brother is destroying himself and for what!" Shouted Nora as she poked Jaune in the chest.
Jaune looked down in shame and muttered "Cause I want to regain the trust of those that I hurt."
"I'm sorry, can you repeat that?" asked Ren.
"I said, I want to regain the trust of that I hurt and lied to. What is so hard to understand about that!" Exclaimed Jaune, after which he got surrounded by a small amount of dark aura.
"Jaune." said Pyrrha in a soft voice, which caused the dark aura to disappear and calmed down Jaune a bit. She then added "If you could just talk to them, maybe it could resolve itself."
Jaune scoffed and replied "Yeah right, that's about as likely as you not getting a date to the dance tomorrow. And when that happens I'll wear a dress to the dance."
Jaune then went towards the door, Pyrrha called out to him "Where are you going?"
"I'm going to clear my head." said Jaune as he left the dorm room.
Pyrrha was about to go after him, only to be stopped by Ren and Nora who both had looks on their face that said 'Let him be for a bit.'
Later on the Beacon grounds
Jaune had been walking around the Beacon grounds for the past half hour in an attempt to clear his head.
"Why did I do that, why did I forge my transcripts, why did I sneak my way into Beacon, why did this have to happen..." He was thinking to himself.
He continued walking and was about to turn a corner when he heard Weiss approaching Neptune and starting up a conversation. He instead decided to stay hidden and listen to their conversation.
"Neptune!" Exclaimed Weiss as she approached the blue haired boy.
"Oh, uh, hey, what's up?" asked Neptune.
"I know this is a little unorthodox, but I wanted to ask you something. Would you... like to accompany me to the dance tomorrow?" asked Weiss.
Neptune looked flustered at the question and replied "Weiss, I would love to... but I can't..."
"And why not?" asked Weiss in confusion.
"It's kind of embarrassing." said Neptune.
"What, already have someone else to go with?" asked Weiss.
"No it's not that, I just can't go with you." said Neptune.
"Oh, I get it." said Weiss with a dejected tone in her voice, as she walked away from him.
Neptune was now alone, leading to Jaune stepping out from behind the pillar he had been standing behind and then approached Neptune. When he got to him he exclaimed "How could you say no to her!"
Neptune turned around and replied "I don't know what your talking about."
"Just now! She asked you to the dance, and you didn't even give a reason for why you wouldn't go with her to the dance!" Exclaimed Jaune.
"I can't go with her, I just can't." said Neptune.
"And why not! What reason could you possibly have to not go to the dance with her!" Exclaimed Jaune.
"I can't dance." whispered Neptune.
"What?" asked Jaune, not having heard what Neptune had said.
"I said I can't dance, you wanted a reason right? Is this what you wanted to hear?" asked Neptune.
"You know how dumb that sounds?" asked Jaune.
"What are you talking about?" asked Neptune.
"We're at a school to become hunters and huntresses, not being able to dance is the least of our concerns." said Jaune as he pointed towards Weiss in the distance and added "Look over there, Weiss is still outside. You still have a chance to correct your mistake."
"You know what Jaune, you're right." Said Neptune.
"No problem, now go before you can't fix your mistake anymore." said Jaune.
"Thanks man, you're a lot smarter than they give you credit for." said Neptune as he walked away from Jaune towards Weiss.
"So I've heard." Mumbled Jaune, as he followed Neptune and then hid behind another wall to listen in on their conversation.
Neptune ran up to Weiss and exclaimed "Weiss wait!"
Weiss turned around and said "What is it Neptune?"
"I want to got to the dance with you." said Neptune.
"And what made you change your mind so quickly?" asked Weiss.
"I thought about it and the reason I didn't want to go was stupid." said Neptune.
"And what was that reason?" asked Weiss.
"It's kind of embarrassing." said Neptune.
"Well spit it out, or I'll just go with someone else." said an impatient Weiss.
"I... can't... dance..." said Neptune.
Weiss tried to hold in her laughter at how ridiculous the answer sounded, only for her to fail and burst out in laughter.
"See, I told you it was embarrassing. I shouldn't have told you." said Neptune.
"No... It's not that." said Weiss, trying to catch her breath from laughing.
"Then what is it?" asked Neptune.
"You know how dumb you sound, it's school dance. No one here can dance, I just wanted to ask you to come to the dance with me as my date." said Weiss.
"I get that... Wait as a date!" Exclaimed Neptune.
"Or as two friends, whatever you want it to be." said Weiss.
"No, its totally fine. It can be a date if you want it to be." said Neptune.
"Great, I'll see you at the dance. You'll recognize me by my white dress." said Weiss as she winked at Neptune.
"I'll be sure to look out for that." said Neptune.
The two then left the grounds, each going in the direction of their own dorm building. Leaving Jaune to be alone with his thoughts.
But then he got snapped out of his thoughts when a small explosion knocked him to the ground. He looked up and saw a robot with several stars on his body.
"Who are you?" asked Jaune.
"I'm Star Man." said Star Man, who then got a good look at Jaune and then added "And... you're not the person I'm looking for. Terribly sorry."
Star Man then jumped away from Jaune, the blond knight then thought to himself "I can't let that creep cause havoc here, I have to stop him."
Jaune then ran after the robot, while at the same time wielding his sword and shield.
After a while of chasing the robot, Jaune was able to corner it into a dead end. "End of the line for you." said Jaune.
"Maybe so, but I gave you a choice. No eat my star crash!" Shouted Star Man as he fired a ring of stars at Jaune, who easily deflected the stars with his shield.
"That's it, that's all you do? How does Rock have trouble with you guys?" asked Jaune.
"To be fair, some of us were built better than others." said Star Man, firing another ring of stars at the blond knight. Which were once again deflected by his shield.
"Are you done?" asked Jaune.
"Nope, there is more." said Star Man, who fired another ring of stars at Jaune. Who in turn blocked the stars, rushed towards the robot and slashed at the robot a couple of times.
The result of this was that the star patterns on the torso, head and limbs were sliced to pieces. Revealing circuitry in the places where there were once star shaped decorations.
"Any last words?" asked Jaune.
"I can make you a star." said Star Man, trying to be funny.
"Yeah, I don't think so." said Jaune, as he plunged his sword into the circuitry located in the torso of the robot. Which caused the robot to explode, leaving behind it memory chip.
"Better give this to Rock." Jaune thought to himself, as he made his way over to the dorm building that his team and team RRWBY stayed at.
He knocked on the and came face to face with an annoyed Weiss, who said "What do you want." in an annoyed tone.
"I just ran into one of Rock's robots and took it down. I'm here to give him the chip with the weapons data." said Jaune.
"We'll give to him when he is done." said Weiss.
"When he is done with what?" asked Jaune.
"Having a shower, it's almost midnight and we're going to stay up late tomorrow night." said Weiss.
"I know, I'll just come back in a few minutes then." said Jaune.
"No, hand over the weapons data and return to your dorm." said Weiss, holding out her hand.
"Fine." said Jaune as he handed her the memory chip, he was about to walk away but then he turned around and said "I know you guys still don't trust me, but at least give me a chance."
"I don't know what you're talking about." Replied Weiss coldly.
"I guessed so, have a good night." said Jaune as he walked over to his own dorm, entered and closed the door behind him.
Rock then walked out of the bathroom in his pajamas and saw the memory chip in Weiss's hands.
"When did you get that?" whispered Rock, not trying to wake up Blake, Yang and Ruby who all were already asleep.
"Jaune brought it in a few seconds ago." said Weiss, trying to hide the disgust in her voice.
"I see." said Rock as he grabbed the memory chip and had it absorbed by the hard drive. Giving him the message "Star Crash obtained."
"So, where is he now?" asked Rock.
"I told him I'd give you the memory chip." said Weiss.
"I see, and then also told him to leave. Right?" asked Rock as he laid down on his bed.
"What are you talking about?" asked Weiss in confusion.
"The fact that you, Yang, and Blake still don't trust him. You know he has been trying to better himself right, trying to improve himself, trying to win back everyone's trust to make things less awkward between our teams." said Rock.
"I didn't..." said Weiss.
"That's right, you didn't think about it. So for once in your life try to think about others instead of yourself, goodnight." said Rock as he closed his eyes and fell asleep, leaving Weiss alone to think about what she was told.
Unknown location
A masked figure was standing alone in a darkened room in an unknown location, when a door opens and a cloaked figure enters the room and then speaks up "Brother Adam you wished to speak with me."
"Yes, I wish to know what this is?" asked Adam as he held up his scroll with a newspaper article.
"That would be a newspaper article, what you want me to read it for you?" asked the figure in a taunting manner.
"Don't play dumb with me Scorpio, we both know what this is." said Adam.
"Well, if you know what it is and I know what it is about. Why don't you tell me." said Scorpio.
"This has gone too far." said Adam.
"What has gone too far, Adam?" asked Scorpio with an uncaring tone in his voice.
"You know damn well what I'm talking about, we kill humans they deserve it. But killing faunus, our own kind. You've gone too far Scorpio, I'm giving you one warning to stop what you're doing." said Adam calmly, but with a hint of rage in his voice.
"I don't see the problem brother Adam, the White Fang only started killing humans after your ideals became popular. I just see it as the next logical step, our own brethren need to know that not joining the White Fang is just as bad as siding with the humans." said Scorpio.
"Dammit Scorpio! This isn't the way to do that!" Yelled Adam.
"To me, and everyone else who has been oppressed for too long it is." said Scorpio as he made his way to the door to leave the building.
"Where are you going!" Yelled Adam.
"Away from here, maybe think about what I said." said Scorpio, as he left the building and sent a message on his scroll that read 'START OPERATION GRAB THE BULL BY THE HORNS'
This left Adam alone, who though to himself "I hope you're staying safe wherever you are right now, Blake."
The next night at Beacon
Yang was welcoming guests at the entrance of the school dance in her white dress when Ruby walked in "Oooooh, you look beautiful!" Cooed Yang.
"Can we have a serious talk about how Weiss fights in these?" asked Ruby as she was struggling to walk on high heels.
"Just head inside you big baby, your date will be here in half an hour." said Yang.
"Yeah, yeah I know." said Ruby in an annoyed tone as she headed into the dancehall.
In the meantime Sun is standing outside of the entrance, struggling with putting on his tie "Stupid... Dumb... Neck Trap!" He exclaimed.
"I knew you'd look better in a tie." said Blake as she walked over to him.
Sun looks over and sees the dark purple dress worn by Blake, she then approaches him and fixes his tie. The two then walk towards the entrance while having their arms locked.
"Sooooo, does this mean we're going... together?" asked Sun.
"I don't have any other plans, so I'm all yours for the night." said Blake.
"Cool, lets head in shall we." said Sun.
Blake nods and the two enter the dancehall together.
A bit later Sun and Blake are sharing their first dance of the night, with Yang, Ruby and Weiss watching on.
"I told you she would come." said Yang, with a hint of pride in her voice.
"Missions accomplished." said Weiss.
"So, what do we do now?" asked Ruby.
"Try to have some fun until Rock arrives, ok?" asked Yang.
"Sure, at least I'll have you two to keep me company... And you're gone." said Ruby as Weiss and Yang had walked away from her. Weiss to be with Neptune and Yang to welcome more guests.
"Stupid lady stilts." said Ruby in annoyance as she tried to keep her balance.
"Not enjoying yourself?" asked Professor Ozpin as he walked up to Ruby and stood next to her.
"Oh no, everything is fine! I'm just not much of a fancy pantsy... dancey girl. Also, I'm waiting for Rock to arrive." said Ruby.
"Well, you can't spend your whole life on the battlefield, even if you may want to." said Professor Ozpin.
"Yeah, that lesson's been floating around a lot lately." Replied Ruby.
"If you think about it, fighting and dancing aren't so different. Two partners interlocked, although one wrong move on the ballroom merely leads to a swollen foot." said Professor Ozpin.
"Or a twisted ankle." added Ruby.
"It's not every day that friends are able to come together like this. Time has a way of testing our bonds, but it's nights like these that can help keep them stronger than ever. Nights like these are ones we'll never forget." said Professor Ozpin.
"Thank you Professor." said Ruby.
"Now be patient, your company can arrive at any minute. Enjoy the dance, Miss Rose." said Professor Ozpin as he walked away. Leaving Ruby to look at the dancers on the dance floor in a new light.
Back at the entrance Yang is welcoming more guests, when she exclaims "You guys are just in time!"
"Wouldn't miss it for the world." Replied Mercury as he led Emerald into the dance hall with a smirk on his face.
