Lindsey had been right; making the bread had been a great distraction, even if the end result had been completely inedible.
Although Sara had remained quiet throughout the process, she had started to smile a little towards the end of the bread making process. Once Lindsey was settled in bed for the night, Sara started to clean up the mess they had made in the kitchen; despite Catherine telling her it wasn't necessary.
Sara just shrugged her shoulders, something she had been doing a lot of lately, and carried on cleaning regardless.
'Hey Sar…' Catherine asked after another long silence had settled between them
'Yeah?' Sara mumbled
'Linds had fun this evening, thanks for humouring her'
'It's ok… I… I had fun too…' Sara placed the cloth on the side, and took a seat at the kitchen table. 'I'm sorry my… that I… I'm sorry I made Lindsey feel uncomfortable these past few days… and that I ignored you'
'It's ok Sara; I know you've got a lot to deal with at the moment…'
'Yeah…' Sara scratched at her arm absentmindedly, a nervous tick she had developed since being in the hospital. 'I was… I just… I'm scared to get to close to you… to you both, because I know sooner or later I'm going to be in a 6x8 cell for the rest of my life'
'Sar…' Catherine said, her face dropping, her eyes closing 'It won't…'
'It won't be forever, right?' Sara snapped, before taking a deep breath to try and calm herself down 'Might as well be. My job was my life, and I'm not getting that back. My friends won't care anymore, you won't care anymore when I'm sentenced…' Sara's voice trailed off 'Why pretend anything different until that point?' Sara whispered, pushing herself up and away from the table, and walking out of the room.
All Catherine could do was watch her go. Trying to speak to her right now would achieve nothing at all.

Sara stayed in her room for the rest of the night, and much of the next morning, eventually leaving to go to the bathroom. She contemplated going straight back to her room, but her feet ended up carrying her through into the kitchen. Pulling things out of the cupboards, Sara set to work.
After dropping Lindsey off at school Catherine had decided to get a few more hours of sleep, when she came round at about 1 in the afternoon, it was to a pleasant smell filling the house. Pulling herself out of bed, she pulled on her dressing gown and headed into the kitchen, where she was met with a wonderful sight.
Sara was stood, hair in a messy bun, flour on her clothes, the counters, almost everywhere, and on top of the oven was a freshly baked batch of bread rolls, and a tray of cookies. Catherine couldn't remember the last time she had smiled at the sight of something as much as she was now.
'Sara?' Catherine called out softly
'Mmmhm?' Sara mumbled, pulling some muffins out of the oven now
'Are you ok?'
'Yep… yep…' Sara placed the muffins down, but didn't look at Catherine
'Ok… so… baking?'
'Yeah… I… I still can't really bring myself to eat it, but maybe if I'm more involved in preparing it…' Sara shrugged again 'I like running experiments… Lindsey just taught me it doesn't always have to mean test tubes and Bunsen burners, it can be flour and sugar and ovens…'
'Sara?' Catherine questioned again, stepping closer to the brunette 'are you sure you're okay?'
'Yeah… Yeah…' Sara turned, a little too fast, and collapsed on the floor.

When Sara came around, her head was sore, and she wasn't wearing her own clothes, blinking her eyes, she looked around, then closed her eyes again.
Once again she was in the hospital. She could feel something on her arm, and without really looking she knew it was another I.V drip. Doing her best to ignore it, she turned slightly in the bed, unaware of the presence sat next to her.
Two hours later she came round again when she heard a bustling in her room. Opening her eyes she saw a familiar nurse checking her vitals, and replacing the I.V bag in her arm. Rolling on to her back, she remained quiet, letting Jennifer finish what she had too.
'Hey' came a quiet voice next to her.
Catherine.
Sara turned her head to look at her for a moment, before turning it away again.
'You collapsed… I couldn't get you to come round… your breathing wasn't right… I had no choice but to phone for help Sara… your body couldn't take it anymore, and after your burst of energy in the kitchen, it just… shut down' Catherine inched her hand towards Sara, brushing the back of it with her thumb gently.
'That was nearly 2 days ago' Catherine added after another five minutes of silence.
Sara nodded her head slowly in understanding, slowly turning over once more, and taking Catherine's hand in her own.
Sara gave Catherine's hand a long, tight squeeze. She didn't want to let go.
'I know' Catherine reassured her 'I know you didn't mean for this to happen Sara, but you know you won't get better if you keep starving yourself, and I know you don't want to spend your last days of freedom confined to a hospital room on an I.V drip before going to prison for God only knows how long…'
Sara's body started to shake; as the tears started to fall 'I want to go home' she hiccupped
'I know, as soon as your strengths back…'
'No, you don't understand… I want to go home. I want… I need… I need to go home' Sara choked out
'Sara?' Catherine questioned, one hand still tightly in Sara's, the other gently caressing her head.
'Tomales Bay…I need… I…please' Sara's breathing became even more erratic through her panic, before she once again passed out.
